- Yakima Highroller vs. FrontLoader (aka Hatin' on the HighRoller)
This is my first video review, which I recorded last-minute the morning I was getting rid of my Highrollers. It's a little long, but I hope it helps. I wanted to get it out there since I didn't see much comparing the two.
Yakima Highroller vs. FrontLoader (aka Hatin' on the HighRoller)
This is my first video review, which I recorded last-minute the morning I was getting rid of my Highrollers. It's a little long, but I hope it helps. I wanted to get it out there since I didn't see much comparing the two.
Very helpful comparison. Thanks for posting. Also, at 5:40 I was convinced just at the mention of "nine parts" to attach the Highroller. Nothing else needed to be said for me at that point.
thanks for talking about the difference, saved me some time and money!
Just bought the frontloader and was a bit unsure about my choice. Went to browse YT and came across your video, and I'm just so relieved now! :) Thanks a lot for the comparison and the installation guide! Cheers!
Glad it was helpful, and nice choice with the FrontLoader. I think you’ll like it! Thx for your comment too.
Thanks for that comparison, I ordered the "FrontLoader" just now from Amazon plus two locks for about $250. You steered me away from the "HighRoller", but using your video reference, I think I will be happier in the long run despite the differences. I had watched some other videos, but a direct comparison from you was insightful and informative.
Nice! Enjoy the FrontLoader. It’s a tried and true design that should work well for you. Thanks for the kind words.
Thank you Kevin, very helpful and great to see them side by side.
Very welcome. Glad it helped you out. I appreciate you taking the time to let me know.
this is just what I needed. I have 6 frontloaders and need 1 more, was thinking about adding a highroller. need to move them around a lot - sticking with the frontloader! thanks!!!
Very useful video. Thank you for the time you put into it!
Two thumbs up, great side-by-side, thanks for taking the time to make it.
Soooo helpful! I have bee trying to decide which to get. The Highroller looks more aerodynamic and folds down nice...but what a PAIN to install! Thanks! Go subi OB!
Excellent Kevin, you’ve made up my mind. Huh haaaaaaaaa, I’ve got an Outback too!
Glad I watched this, thanks man!
I have a 2015 outback(same color even), can you open your rear hatch with the front loader mounted or does it hit? Thanks for the video.
Jason Reaume Sorry about the delay. I wanted to verify for you, just to be sure. It does clear the gate. Just barely, only a few inches, but that's all it takes! Btw, I took a picture for you, but I don't think there is a way to post it here.
thanks for the video. i was a little worried about the front loader but this helped.
Glad it helped out. FrontLoader is solid. Been a best seller for years, so hard to go wrong with it. Enjoy!
Great review - appreciate the depth
Really helpful- thanks for the great overview !
You had me when you showed us all of the extra parts. Front Loader it is!
Yeah, kind of ridiculous how many parts that one involves. FrontLoader is always a good choice. Thx for watching and commenting. 👍🏼
Convinced the moment you put out all the parts to fit the HighRoad - FrontLoader is $80 cheaper in Australia too!! Thanks Kevin. I also read somewhere that the FrontLoader is better for locations near the sea with saltwater in the air.
Haha, yeah that HighRoad had a lot going on! Good call on the FrontLoader, and thx for sharing re salty locations. 👍🏼
@@kevinhill.8 have since seen that later HighLoad versions have a much simplified mounting system. Very fast on/off.
Thanks for the comparisons. I just ordered 1 high roller and hopefully I don’t run into this problem and that they updated the high roller.
I am now considering having one of each on the car and see which one I like more.
You’re welcome. Let us know what you find out ab any updates if you have time. Not a bad idea to try both. Can always sell the one you don’t like as much for a minor loss if it’s still in good shape.
@@kevinhill.8 I work for a bike shop so I got these real cheap. I don’t mind having both for when I need to pick up a friend to go mtb or my wife and daughter.
Thank you so much. I will be installing on Tuesday.
Awesome, thanks for looking into that for me.
How much do you want for that cat I saw in the video?
Thank you!
The weight difference was very helpful.
Glad it was helpful Daniel!
Great video. So happy I came across it. I have some older Yakima bike racks but with my new suv the oem rack is thick. For now I ordered a generic brand similar to the front loader on eBay for my niece. Hope it’s serves the purpose, but I will be ordering a front loader. How do they hold on your Subaru while driving?
They hold very well. Not sure if you have a Subaru, but it’s worth mentioning that the factory crossbars are not very stable, and kind of bowed (arced like a rainbow), which makes the bikes lean out a little and wiggle about. Not a big deal, but also not ideal.
@@kevinhill.8 don’t have a Subaru. Have an x5 and cx9. Both have the arched oem cross bars as you mention. W my ski rack they mount fine but my bike rack I notice there will be wiggle from the slight slant if you will it will leave. Hope they are still secure.
Manufactures push for Thule but I’ve used both brands and even interchange mounts at times w no problems
@@hhova29 yes, I agree they work ok, just not rock solid like Thule and Yakima mounts. Enjoy your new bike rack, and thanks for letting me know the video was helpful. 👍🏼
Thanks so much! This is exactly the info I needed to make a decision!
Glad to hear it helped you out. Thanks for letting me know.
Great video. Thanks
Getting a frontloader for my suzuki swift and was wondering if your able to install it with the bike backwards on the car, just alittle woried about the cars hatch hitting it
Yep. Shouldn't have any issue with it backwards, and it should resolve any hatch clearance issues too.
That looks like a pain...is this an older model? The video install from Yakima looks quite simple now. Thanks!
Yes, the HighRoller was replaced with the HighRoad, which is a much better rack. The FrontLoader still exists, and is a good option too. I cover both (and a whole lot more) in this long Yakima video review: ua-cam.com/video/ydPfZ9reeXU/v-deo.html
I just purchased a Front loader and very annoyed you have to purchase the key lock seperatly!! On a good note i was spinning out how easy it was to fit to my Rola roof racks! a few minutes and i was running!
Definitely very easy to install. And yes, lots of people are frustrated about locks not being included. I think the manufacturers like to sell them separately to keep the MSRP low as a selling tactic.
Thank you for doing this we really appreciate it.
Glad it helped. Thanks for taking the time to comment!
Very helpful video, thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the video, really glad I didn't go with the high roller now
Glad it helped. Frontloader is great, and the Highroad, which replaced the highroller, is also nice.
You have such a kind nice voice. I would be so aggressive and frustrated!! 9 parts and screws and bars and idk man. ide loose myself during filming and have to start over. I’ll settle for the frontloader
Thanks, I'm glad my tone did not fully convey how frustrating the HighRoller could be. Yeah, the simplicity of the FrontLoader is a real selling point.
Thanks for the review! I have an Outback as well, glad to know it fits on the factory bars. Also nice Bernie sticker.
Right on, thanks Bret!
Very helpful thank you
I just got the frontloader for my specialized full suspension mountain bike, because I lost the key to my Malone bike rack.
Nice! I hope it's working well for you. Sorry to hear about the loss of your key, but perhaps a blessing in disguise.
Both designs came from the original King Cobra, which is an excellent rack and still going strong for me 10 yrs later. So to me there’s no need to redesign what’s already been perfected. But it’s all about revenue from R&D and manufacturing. Frontloader looks more true to the King Cobra design.
Interesting. I didn't know about that history, or the King Cobra. Glad to hear it's still working for you after all these years. That is what buying quality up front gets you.
thanks for reviewing!!
Absolutely. I hope it helped you out.
As of 2023 the HighRoller is discontinued and is replaced by the HighRoad which is in fact easier and quicker to install than the FrontLoader. Look for a more up to date video before you purchase.
Thx for your comment William. This video was made six years ago, and of course product availability will change over time. That said, many people buy on the used market, and the title clearly states what models are being covered, so there should be no surprises. I did make a video, two years after this one, that covers the HighRoad and FrontLoader, among other Yakima products. ua-cam.com/video/ydPfZ9reeXU/v-deo.html
Awwwwww he bought a house and he's still a child with his pricey toys...
🏡 🚗 🧸🚵🏽♀️
Thx so much!!
Glad you found it useful!
Kevin Hill dude yes!
Why do all Subaru owners have a million stickers on them? It doesn't look as ba as you think! 😂
Haha, neither do those shades and that v-neck your sporting brah! 😎😜 Seriously though, I’m sure you’ll be very happy to know that most of those stickers have been removed from that vehicle, and the Tacoma has been limited to a very sensible number of stickers (3) as well. 🙄
I purchased Frontloaders and guess what, they won't fit Yakima's own Railbars. And because it's a one-piece design, you can't even use a mighty mount to make it work. The Frontloader also just feels cheap compared to older King Cobra mounts I have, which was so simple in function and design compared to this new garbage. But Yakima doesn't make money selling old product, so they have to reinvent what was already proven effective and charge more. Guess I'm sticking with my 10 yr old King Cobras which work just fine but look like a$$ because Yakima never knew how to source UV-resistant plastics.
Sorry to hear about that, but thank you for sharing the info. What makes the Frontloader incompatible with the Railbar? Is the Railbar too long/deep (front to back)? Thanks!
