Not sure what i should do here. I have an Outback, so the roof is a bit less tall than your Forester, but then im 5'9. I never envisioned needing a trailer hitch on my car, so I ended up with a car that doesn't have one. A shop would charge a lot for install, doing it myself would take forever. So I think I'm stuck with a rooftop rack
Appreciate your honesty with the issues of it being on a car roof. The hassles of actually putting a bike on a roof is not often mentioned in many videos. Those types of wheel mounts also don't cater for touring bikes with full mud guards. The manufacturers also seem to use rubber straps. Which, when they deteriorate, you can only buy from the suppliers at premium costs usually. When is someone going to invent a roof rack mount with an easy lift up and off for the bike and those people who cant lift a bike that high?
I agree, thanks for your comment. Maybe if someone invented one that tilted, grabbed your bike, and then can swing up to the roof easily. I dunno!
@@OutdoorGoyo yep, my thoughts exactly. Have been looking at ones similar for wheelchairs. I'm sure it could be done, just maybe not at a viable cost for resale?
I love my bike rack. I have it installed on my Nissan Sentra
That’s good info for ppl. Thanks for sharing
Just got a semi new one at REI for $110! What a steal
Hey great review. I bought this for my 22’ Bronson and I agree it could be longer. Oh well! I’ll still keep it
ya, it still works fine. thanks for sharing!
@@OutdoorGoyo What's the wheelbase of your bike? I'm super keen on the Yakima over the Thule UpRide but my wheelbase is 1245. Thanks!
@Dave O, what's the wheelbase on your Bronson? Thanks
@@oscarlangley7887 my wheelbase for the Santa Cruz Hightower XL is 1260
@@OutdoorGoyo Thanks for replying. I jumped the gun and bought the HighRoad based on your review and am not disappointed. :)
You said its difficult to load your bike on - then proceded to do it in like 15 seconds. It's also not the racks fault you have a tall SUV and a heavy bike, thats always going to be difficult regardless of what rack you use.
I don’t think it’s the time that it takes to do it I think it’s the effort. I’m 6 foot two and in relatively good shape. I also did two takes of the video the first one it looked a little shabby… To be honest with you. That’s why I mention roof racks in general being difficult if you don’t have a short car and have a light bike. Hope you got some value out of the video. Do you have a roof rack?
Yeah honestly I'm too short to want to use this setup. Definitely a harder load then hitch racks.
I have a roof bike carrier and just carry a small step ladder with me. Simple!
Thank you for this review. Do you have any alternative roof racks (less than $500 preferably) that you would recommend? I appreciate it in advance!
Thanks for the comment. I picked mine bc it had the best reviews from a mtb perspective. There’s also rocky mounts which I hear has good reviews. Let me know what you end up getting!
Thanks for the review. Just bought one at Rei. Yeah the lock cores are 40 bucks so overall it’s 290 bucks.
Yeah it’s kind of a bummer they don’t include that… It seems really essential to the product. Are you satisfied with your rack?
@@OutdoorGoyo very satisfied it’s not wobbly and it’s really sturdy. I paired it with rhino roof rack, no problems so far.
I think it makes sense if you wanna buy two racks, and you want the same key to open all of them.
Hey just a pro-tip, you should stand in your door jam to put your bike up. Otherwise it’s too difficult to get up 😄
Ya good tip, that does make it a bit easier. Still a balancing act!
Epic
I had an older version of this roof rack and would not recommend it. It is not a secure or safe rack and would not recommend taking this on the highway. The front wheel mount failed on me and my bike was launched off of my roof... luckily no one was behind me.
Woah! Did Yakima reimburse you for damages at least?
@@OutdoorGoyo I purchased it through a 3rd party vendor and to even get to customer service you need some product # that I don't seem to have... I doubt they would reimburse me. I'm sure there's something in the fine print that they aren't responsible for damages.
@@OutdoorGoyo I'm not they only person that this has happened to. I saw another review where the same exact thing happened. The product needs a front wheel strap to prevent this.
Btw any new issues?
New issues? What do you mean?
What size tires are on the bike you have there? 27.5? 29? Looks a hair short in the back there
29” size XL
Can use a stepping stool even when there is people lol
Ya a step stool would be nice. Would have to keep it in the car.
