Jackson Kayak Flow Review | Whitewater Kayaking
Initial impressions of the new Jackson Kayak Flow, after a low water lap on the Orletta section of the White Salmon River in WA. I definitely enjoyed the boat, but I'm not sure if it has a place in my quiver. I think it would need to replace both my M Antix and my S Gnar, since it kind of sits between the two (my M Antix is a pretty capable creeker for me, since I'm at the very bottom of the weight range). It could probably do this, but for step up runs, I'd probably prefer my Gnar, and for creeks I'm comfortable on, I'd rather be in my Antix...or my S Ripper 2 or S Firecracker, depending on the run. Thanks for watching! Don't forget to like, subscribe, and share your thoughts in the comments.

Raw footage of the recovery of a whitewater kayak (Pyranha Scorch M) from below the 4th and final drop of Shipherd Falls on the Lower Wind River near Carson, WA. The boat ended up there after a failed throw-and-go about 24 hours earlier. 😖 The following day a boater from another crew accidentally went into the eddy. He attached a bag, but the eddy was too dynamic to get it open and let rope out...

Nice video! What offset are your rims? Do they protrude out from the fender at all?
Thx. I believe they are 1” offset. They line up almost exactly w outside edge of the fender flare.
bought a blade 6 around 16+ years ago only cuz of it's beauty. not have much need often for a backpack as small as a blade 6. i travel lots of overnight now, so i can only find the blade 20 on ebay. it's not so functional a backpack. i have it only for it's beauty: wide at top narrowing at the bottom. beautiful logo, smooth rounded tops and bottoms .. no sharp edge, the trapozoid shape.
Yes, the design is striking. Blade 6 must be quite small! Thx for watching and commenting. 👍🏼
Oh wow!! I knew you could use it on the shock pump cause of the 300 psi but it never ocurred to me to hook it directly to the shock pump.
Nice! It’s a pretty handle little tool. Thx for watching and commenting.
Did you have to remove the mud flaps
Sorry, I didn’t have mud flaps, so unfortunately I can’t help you with that question. Maybe someone else who reads your comment will know. Thx for watching.
Which do you personally like to use more?
Piston for sure. It’s the one we kept and use regularly. It’s easily the better of the two, but it’s also a lot more money and the NV 2.0 is no slouch. Good luck with your decision.
Thanks mate for the video. How are you going to travel without keys if all your lockers have the same keys? In this case you will travel even without bikes or with unlocked bikes which is very risky.
Not sure I get your question and point. I think what I was saying is that if a lock can be locked up without needing the keys you could lock up your bike, then leave on a trip and not realize you don’t have them until you go to unlock your bike. This happened to customers where I used to work. They came into the store hundreds of miles from home after realizing they had locked up their bikes and didn’t have the keys. Of course anyone could lock up a bike and then forget the keys. My point is just that it’s even easier to forget them if you don’t even need to have them in hand when locking the bikes up.
How is Thule with a metal fender both f/r?
Thx for watching and for your question. I don’t think you’ll have any issues with the rear fender, but front fenders are not recommended for these racks. I have used it with my road bike, which has a short front fender, and it works ok, but it needs to be short fender so you can still tuck the support arm pretty far down the wheel. Hope that helps!
One more piece of information...If you're looking for a 60 lb. capacity for an ebike, note that the Trail Doc feature on the Kuat NV 2.0 is rated to only 40 lbs. (per my inquiry to Kuat customer service). The NV 2.0 Base is the exact same rack less the Trail Doc for about $100.00 less.
Good info, thx for sharing. I rarely use the trail doc anyway, so I think this is a good call and a nice way to save a little money. I believe the Base is only available in matte black. Looks great imo, but something to be aware of.
I feel SO much more informed having watched this. Thanks so much for a really excellent review!
You bet! Thx for watching and commenting. I’m glad it was helpful to you!
Do you know if this strip will also fit into the bottom channel of the HD Bar? I've read that it would be advisable to add a rubber strip to the bottom but I'm not sure if it's the same dimensions as the top strip. Have you added weather strip to the bottom of the HD Bar? Perhaps I can just move the original Yakima strip underneath when I add the Thule strip on top? Thanks!
Sorry for the delayed reply. I wanted to check to make sure before answering you because I’ve never tried. Turns out the bottom channel is the same size as the top, so moving the leftover Yakima strip down there makes a lot of sense to me. I’ve heard that can help keep noise down, which would be good since the HD bar is pretty loud to begin with. The bars I have mounted on a rack in the bed aren’t audible in the cab, but on the roof they definitely are, so I may add the under strip to those. Thx for watching, and for thinking about this. 👍🏼
Only thing I would say is that although you may like the finish of the Kuat better, I have a feeling the Thule finish is a powder coating (not paint), which would protect better.
Good point! It’s kind of hard to say, but after seeing both in use for a number of years I’m confident in stating that both seem pretty durable. To your point, it is possible that the paint of the Kuat could be more prone to showing scratches, though I never had that issue. Thx for watching and sharing those thoughts. Much appreciated! 👍🏼
Can you connect a Schroder pump at the back and still pump up a Presta ?
Yes, the pump head is compatible with both Presta and Schrader pumps. Thx for your question and for watching and commenting!
Hey!! How does this paddle compared to a Hero?
Hero was actually my first true WW kayak, but it’s been like 12 years, so I’ll do my best. Overall I’d say they are not very similar. Hero was shorter and much rounder. It was a good beginner boat imo, bc it was forgiving and slow, giving you time to make moves and not punishing you severely for improper edging, etc. The def downside to the Hero was that it was hole bait. Being that rounded and short (i.e., a potato) made it more likely to get stopped in holes, and tough to get out when that happened. In comparison, the Flow has a true planing hull with much more defined edges, a significantly sharper/sportier bow and stern, and is overall a more modern design. To me it feels very similar to my Antix 2.0, but with better bow rocker, better knee position, some added length, plus of course volume in the stern, making it a river runner, not a half slice. Hope that helps! Thx for watching and commenting. 👍🏼
The Flow is kind of giving Hero vibes - you think they paddle similarly?
Here’s a copy of my reply to the Hero question you left in my Flow review video: Hero was actually my first true WW kayak, but it’s been like 12 years, so I’ll do my best. Changed my mind! You're an influencer!
Haha, thx. I appreciate you watching and commenting. Good luck with your purchase!
Nice review. How about spare parts availability and customer service?
Good questions. I believe parts are available for both. My experience is that Kuat has better CS than Thule. It was easier for me to talk to a human with Kuat, and just felt smaller/more personal. Maybe things have changed though bc it’s been a few years since I’ve reached out to either. Thx for watching and commenting! 👍🏼
Excellent video and detailed. I had factory crossbars on 2016 ford explorer and had same bow issue when bikes on top. Went with Yakima crossbars system for the VW Alltrack, Subaru WRX, and Honda CRV. The Yakima system offers the most stability and versatility. You have all the toys in that garage! Fantastic get out and play family man!
Good stuff! Thx for watching and commenting. I totally agree that Yakima crossbars are so much more secure than factory. Not cheap but a worthwhile upgrade if you are hauling gear more than once or twice a year.
Thank you for this excellent review. I own the KUAT Sherpa 2.0 and love it. I leave it on my car 24/7/365 (in Delaware) and have had no problems with it at all. I just bought an ebike that exceeds its 40 pound limit, so I need to upgrade to (most likely) one of these racks. The Sherpa has shown zero rust after over two years. How does the Thule T2 Pro XT hold up in the weather? I'd appreciate your comments. Thank you.
Thule seemed to hold up well, but I’m in PNW where it’s mostly rain and very little salt on roads, it at all. It does have more plastic than some other racks, so that may help.
Excellent review. Important...One thing that NO ONE includes in their review is that while the NV 2.0 (2" model) is rated at 60 pounds per bike, the trail doc feature is only rated to 40 pounds. I wrote to KUAT asking for the rating and customer service responded to my question. This is important if you're buying the NV 2.0 to carry ebikes or other heavy bikes and expect to use the trail doc.
Wow, that’s gtk. I never would have thought about that one, and def important with so many e-bikes out there nowadays. Seems like they should have built it to same capacity as the rack, imo. Thx for watching and commenting!
Discount tire is badass! Nice looking tires 👍
DT does seem to crush it for tire pricing and service. I’ve been back multiple times and they’re always great. Thx for watching and commenting. 👍🏼
Can you confirm which ones are the wear indicators on the tyre
Wear indicator strips are down in the tread, between the lugs. They are little raised lines. Hope that helps.
Excellent review. I like the clean lines and compactness of the Kuat. It looks lighter but appearances can be deceiving. I am also considering the Kuat Sherpa
Thanks! The Kuat is def more compact and so it does feel easier to move around imo. The Sherpa is a really nice choice too!
I just placed the order on the Sherpa
@yebogogo64 nice!! I know a lot of people who swear by that rack as the best lightweight quality bang-for-your-buck tray rack. Enjoy!
Wow !! Looks like a big piece of turd. Ew
Thanks for a great and informative video. Just got my nv2.0 and so far I like it a lot.
Great to hear! I didn’t find much about that rack to complain about. Very solid indeed. Enjoy, and thx for watching and commenting. 👍🏼
hey man... drainplugs rule, my Monstar doesn't have one and I get tired of lifting it over my head to drain the boat
That definitely understandable! I just never get very much water in any of my boats unless I swim, and thankfully that’s a rare thing for me, so using a sponge for a second seems easier and gets that small amount of water completely out. I certainly know a lot of people who drain real amounts of water out after every paddle though, so I can see why not everyone would feel the same as me re drain plugs. Thx for watching and commenting. 👍🏼
130 pounds is a marathon runner. 130 Pounds is just over a horse jockey. 130 pounds is me as a slender 6th grader. To say this makes a huge difference in boat performance is quite the understatement.
Haha, well it is what it is. I don’t run marathons and I don’t jockey horses, and no matter how much I eat I don’t gain weight. And yeah, it def makes a boat perform differently than someone with say 50 more lbs in same size boat. And being light and tall means I can’t always fit in the size I should be in for my weight. I’ve def found a lot of boats that do fit me well though: M Antix 2, M Flow, S Gnar, S Firecracker, S Ripper 2, etc.
Small Gnarvana is almost an oxymoron, since it is designed to kill it by being huge with huge rocker. Very interesting to hear from a boater on the heavy side of the scale to say he did not feel the rails pre-engaging.
It’s definitely at the medium end of small, which is a size that often fits me best. I know a lot of smaller boaters, esp women, who felt the S Gnar was too large bc of this. I ended up in a M Flow, which is only 1” longer than S Gnar, and one of the reasons I like it more is bc the rails are a little more defined/engaged.
Have you noticed any leaks from the rhino track?
None at all 🤞🏼
Looked into this rack due to the total wheel locking system. Ultimately the price was just too much and went with the Thule xt pro. Seems like a great rack but damn is it expensive. Excellent reviews btw.
That’s understandable. It is definitely expensive, even compared to other high end tray racks. The Thule is a nice rack too, and I’m sure will serve you well. If you haven’t already, you may want to check out my comparison btwn XT Pro and NV 2.0 ua-cam.com/video/8DM0JkyNicc/v-deo.htmlsi=mXEUiAu144ro88KP
I think I heard you have a tall/slender build in one of you other videos. I’m 5’-11”/180lbs. In between M and L for Antix 2.0. I’m curious if your height has ever caused any discomfort or fit challenges in your M Antix.
Yeah, I’m 6’ 135#, size 10 street shoes. No real issues w fit for me in M Antix 2. I’d prefer higher knees (like my S Firecracker has), and I can’t wear bulky footwear, but otherwise it’s fine. I can wear size 11 Hiyaks (sized up for dry suit booties), just not full on shoes/boots. Hope that helps. Thx for watching and commenting. 👍🏼
4:50 man, that level of spray just destroys my Hero 8 footage.
Yeah, spray is definitely the hardest thing to contend w imo. Nothing is perfect, but hydrophobic lens cover def makes a difference. 🚿
You had me when you showed us all of the extra parts. Front Loader it is!
Yeah, kind of ridiculous how many parts that one involves. FrontLoader is always a good choice. Thx for watching and commenting. 👍🏼
That word "THEORECTICAL" is scarry as it relates to the Thule. Since crooks don't care they have no qualms about chaining up your T2 and snatching it from your hitch. They now have a several hundred dollar bike rack.
Yeah, I can’t disagree with you there. It’s definitely possible to compromise a locking hitch pin (like the Kuat uses) too, but I still think it’s more secure than what Thule is doing to secure their rack. Thx for watching and commenting.
Thanks for your work on this. I wanted to know how both of these racks compare when the tailgate of a truck is down. Does it clear on either rack? It doesnt look like it does. I know this is old but maybe you or someone else can answer this question. There’s a sale going on right now and I was curious.
Thank you. I think it might depend on the truck, but you are correct that with my Tacoma both racks do touch the tailgate. I made another comparison video between two Kuat racks (Piston and NV 2.0), and I’m pretty sure I lower the tailgate in that one, so you could at least see it for the Kuat rack. It’s here if you’re interested: ua-cam.com/video/3lJjzE8Mh1o/v-deo.htmlsi=8av3KqaOskevJrbU
Excellent review. I ended up buying the Kuat, upgrading from a hanging bike carrier. It was kind of a bear to assemble, but I'm happy with it so far.
Thanks! I’m glad it was helpful. Nice choice with the Kuat and glad you got it assembled. I’m sure you are enjoying the ease of use over your old hanging rack. Tray racks are so nice for day to day use.
Thank you for an incredibly detailed review! It was great to see the practical comparison from an owner’s perspective.
You’re welcome! Glad it was helpful, and I appreciate you taking the time to comment. 🙏
Thoughts on the Thule T2 Pro XTR? Would you still recommend the NV 2.0 over the Thule. Thanks!
The added wheels are nice for sure, but I still think build quality on the Kuat is better. More metal, more solid, better finish. Release handle on Thule is a nice feature too though. Can’t go wrong with either tbh.
Thank you! I agree. I am leaning more towards the Kuat.
@@ericgonzalez6686 you bet. Happy to help. Good luck in your decision and finding a good deal on one! 👍🏼
I like that this popped up after I bought the Thule lol. Both look like great bike racks. The Thule was available at the bike store. I like it. It now comes with wheels so you can push or pull it on your driveway. I like the bike holder on the other rack. Overall I’m satisfied with my purchase.
Both are super solid racks, and I agree that the wheels on the XTR are super convenient. Glad you’re enjoying the new rack, and thx for watching and commenting. 👍🏼
Why do all Subaru owners have a million stickers on them? It doesn't look as ba as you think! 😂
Haha, neither do those shades and that v-neck your sporting brah! 😎😜 Seriously though, I’m sure you’ll be very happy to know that most of those stickers have been removed from that vehicle, and the Tacoma has been limited to a very sensible number of stickers (3) as well. 🙄
How do these racks hold up to winter weather transporting heavy fat e-bikes? I have a Thule XTR Pro and it has corroded from the salt on the roads.
That’s a good question, but unfortunately it’s one I can’t help with since I’m in OR where it only snows at elevation and they don’t use salt on the roads. My old stomping grounds were WI though, so I know what you mean about how much that salt can take a toll on things. I’m guessing they would do ok since they have auto quality finishes, and the Pro has an even more durable coating, but I can’t say from experience.
U think these would rub i got 265/70/17 hunter venom tires but want to move up to 75's they ride smooth just like the falken look? Also its for a tacoma 2014
Hmm, not sure how they would fit on a 2014, but maybe others will know. The Falkens def do have a nice look to them.
Discount Tire knows how to make customers for life. it's the only play I'll go.
True. I’ve been back multiple times since. Good stuff. Thx for watching and commenting. 👍🏼
Hi Kevin, I gonna have a chance visiting Poland next month, looking forward to buying one of this. You still like this paddle? How do you evaluate it after so long?
Nice! I’m still loving this paddle. The plastic ferrule failed on my first one, so I glued it into a 1-piece paddle and the replacement paddle is my 2-piece now. It has an aluminum ferrule that has been great! Good luck with your visit to Poland. Sounds fun! 🇵🇱
@@kevinhill.8 thanks for this video! It seems the G-Power is a great paddle, but the joint seems to be a major concern. So your first one broke and you just ended up gluing it together? I am in the market for a new paddle and would like to get a two piece to use for playboating and creeking.
@@kevinhill.8 thank you Kevin
Time to start saving up for the Piston model.
Haha, yeah it is a pretty dope setup. They did it right! 😎
I was just watching the Thule T2 Pro XT vs Kuat NV 2.0 review and now I am here - super detailed and thorough reviews!
Thx much! I appreciate you watching and commenting, and I’m glad the reviews were useful.
Can you speak to the cable lock insert? No protection from mud, dirt, water freezing into ice. If it’s all gummed up what do you do? No rubber cap to protect it. It’s a big deal for me so please let us know if it’s been a problem. Thx
I had one other person ask about this so double checked and it’s just an open hole that goes into the rack itself. I even poured water in and it flows out from any number of large openings in the rack itself. So no worries re water, ice, mud, etc. in my opinion. Hope that helps.
Thx
Great review thanks 🎉
Thanks for watching and commenting! 🙏
Thanks for the review, I'm going for Kuat
Glad it was helpful! Thx for watching and commenting. Enjoy the Kuat! 👍🏼
Link for rubber strip not working for me.. possibly removed from store?
Yeah, I think maybe they don’t sell it any more. I’d say prob best to either call etrailer or Thule and ask to be sure you get right one.
Thanks for another excellent review which covers everyday use concerns. I just finished watching your Thule vs. Kuat review...
Excellent. Thx for both your comments. I’m glad the reviews were helpful!
