    Why are some Americans so strongly opposed to gay marriage? Henry Rollins is convinced that not so many people are actually opposed. Instead he sees it as a fundraising tool for small fringe groups.

    HENRY ROLLINS:
    Henry Rollins is an American singer-songwriter, spoken word artist, writer, comedian, publisher, actor, and radio DJ. After performing for the short-lived Washington D.C.-based band State of Alert in 1980, Rollins fronted the California hardcore punk band Black Flag from August 1981 until mid-1986. Following the band's breakup, Rollins soon established the record label and publishing company 2.13.61 to release his spoken word albums, as well as forming the Rollins Band, which toured with a number of lineups from 1987 until 2003, and during 2006. Since Black Flag, Rollins has embarked on projects covering a variety of media. He has hosted numerous radio shows, such as Harmony in My Head on Indie 103, and television shows such as The Henry Rollins Show, MTV's 120 Minutes, and Jackass. He had a recurring dramatic role in the second season of Sons of Anarchy and has also had roles in several films. Rollins has also campaigned for various political causes in the United States, including promoting LGBT rights, World Hunger Relief, and an end to war in particular, and tours overseas with the United Service Organizations to entertain American troops.

      Yours is an old comment now, but you put in one sentence what took me paragraphs. Henry is a seriously underappreciated human. His acting has portrayed some troubling aspects of humanity, but that's because he's just a great actor--and I think too many people have only seen him as an actor. They've not seen him as a musician, and CERTAINLY not as the wonderfully complex and just plain GOOD person at heart that he really is. We should all ascribe to be more like him.

      See, I knew him when he was 18 and he would always talk about how smarter and wiser he would be ("as middle-aged Henry"), and reflect back to "these days". He's someone who is committed to his opinions. We were all scared of him because it was evident (even way back then) he was different. I still dont know how he became so damn famous but he is.

      What ive learned after reading the Quran was that ill be judged by god by my actions. Sure there are things that i dont see as 'good' but those books are very old my friend. I personally think that religious books are guidelines. Not rules to live your life in a certain way. There is a pretty cool quote that i would like to share with you; "You don't need religion to have morals. If you cant determine right from wrong, you lack empathy not religion." The stereotypical "religious people" would probably support what you said. But for me, pray for hate? I'll pass... I wish everyone the best of luck, love and happiness in hes/her life. :)

      I believe the perception among the people who believe gay marriage should be prohibited is the reverse of your characterization of sticking one's nose in another's private affairs. They believe that the act of seeking to sanction marriage is a political and public act. Aside from certain legal aspects, people lobbying for gay marriage are implicitly asking for legitimacy by asking the government to sanction them.
      I would argue the government has no such authority. Or that to the degree that it does, marriage is being redefined in terms of the state's permission to marry, which is ultimately an effort to seek recognition, which implies that the collective view of government officials has some moral, solidifying weight to one's desire to be with another human being.
      Someone poking there nose into another's affair would be telling people what they can and cannot do. Asking the government to say what you are doing is legit is asking the public to endorse your lifestyle. And they are free to do that.
      I do not so much want to argue the merits or lack of merit of allowing gay marriage, as much as to point out that opposition to a lifestyle is not a insertion into that person's life in any way. Not by itself.
      The government does not prohibit people from spending their lives with one another. They just don't (well, there are a few exception with a few states) endorse gay marriage.
      And if the government stopped endorsing straight marriage, I would live in good conscience as to my lifestyle, and I would certainly lobby to reclaim certain legal benefits, but aside from that the governments stamp of approval is itself an instrusion.
      If some welcome that then they ask for intrusion, and I do not feel sorry for that intrusion. I can sympathize with their feelings of alienation. But in asking the government for approval they are asking everyone to approve, and not everyone does.

      ***** I don't really take offense in these things, I hope you do not perceive me to be heated or angry. and this is not quite in the same vein of the remark regarding sexuality but more about morals. I find that I do need religion to have morals. I do not lack empathy for sure. I was once an atheist, before that a skeptic (in the decarte sense), and I did empathize with other people but I did not believe there was any right or wrong. I was ignorant concerning philosophy and religion then, but I understood it to be a natural consequence of atheism. that morality was just socio-biological evolution. I myself am unable to believe in morality as an objective fact outside of religion. In fact it was my belief in right and wrong that brought me to religion. I was just unwilling to accept that I was cursed with this phantom sense that was every bit as real to me as any other sense. That only got me as far as theism, but there it is. I would say religion is prerequisite to objective morality, and that there is no moral obligation to honor subjective morality. sure, i feel the desire to be nice to nice people and help others, but there is no moral justification for loyalty to morality. or to say it differently, there is no moral obligation to be moral if morality does not pre-exist myself and my judgements. so i was a nihilist. but now i am not.

    I am not gay, but I have know many gay men and woman. When I was 8 years old I spent weeks at the hospital with a gay friend that I grew up with. I can not express in words watching someone die of aids and I will not forget his last words. People are people regardless of sex, color or creed. He will forever be in my thoughts.....RIP

    Reading some of the comments below, some arguments are pretty weak. Marriage has been redefined many many times, and you don't need to get married to reproduce. My brother has a kid and he's never been married.

    Great, well thought out speech by the ever brilliant Mr Rollins. I’m pretty shocked at some of the hateful, homophobic comments in the comments section though. Surely if you’re a Black Flag fan you’d agree that fighting intolerance and hate is a very positive thing?
    The story about his bullied classmate is particularly poignant, shocking that people/kids have to put up with abuse for who they are. Many forms of hatred such as racism and homophobia spring from ignorance and fear. Time to RISE ABOVE the hatred people!

    One of my best friends and I argued with a homophobe once, and my friend made an incredible point that just left me awestruck...He said, "I was born straight, I didn't choose to be straight, I just am! How is it any different for someone that is gay...?" The man walked away from both of us...It was so inspiring, I openly admitted to him later that day that I was Bi-Sexual, and it didn't change our friendship one bit!

    It’s funny seeing the Texas GOP claim opposition to sharia law, while at the same time advocating for the criminalization of homosexuality. Since homosexuality being illegal is the single most distinct and known criteria of sharia law.

    I am already so embarrassed for how future generations will look back at us for homophobia.
    In the same way we have to stop and remind ourselves there was a time that people didn't know that the Sun is the centre of our solar system; or that reproduction occurs by gene-mixing and that this dictates our physical makeup. Hell, one day it'll be difficult for most people to imagine a time without the internet.
    One day people's first automatic thought when learning about homophobia will be, "God, they must have been stupid."
    And thanks to the internet they will be able to speed-search youtube comments and find all the nonsense that misguided people thought and wrote as irrefutable evidence that, " . . . yup, a lot of them were definitely stupid."

    I have grown up with 2 wonderful, beautiful aunts who are a lesbian couple. My mom always taught me, "You love who you love, gender doesn't matter." It was always normal for me to be around gay people and I never took issue with it. It was natural. One thing I have to point out is, being gay is not just about having sex, it's about love, partnership and caring for another human, no matter their gender. If there is an attraction sexually, wonderful. But I think a lot of people only believe it's about the sexual aspect and not the mental, emotional, and pure human attraction.

    Being a high-function person with special needs (I was diagnosed with ASD in my late pre-teens), I have come to this conclusion: There is nothing so "different" about people, regardless of their race, religion, sexuality, etc. that constitutes a need to treat them in such a way except as human. I dealt with a moderate level of ostracism growing up in the 80s and 90s - namely amongst undereducated parents and their children that they tyrannically enforced such a mindset - and if you were in the same boat as me, you see how people who are non-white, non-Christian, LGBTQ or similar demographics are mistreated. Such behavior NEEDS to come to an end, and the sooner the better.

    Mr. Rollins states that gay marriage is covered by, and should be allowed because of, the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America. I completely disagree with that statement. However, I do feel that the first sentence of the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence more than gives them that right. Before the hyphen in the sentence, it states that: " We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." So, not only are gay people equal to straight people, they also have a right to pursue happiness in whatever way they see fit, so long as it does not infringe upon the Rights of another citizen of the US. So, if they are equal, that means they get and deserve everything that is granted to straight people, this includes marriage. And considering that marriage does not, in any way, infringe on the Rights of anyone, that means that if marriage would make a couple of gay people happy, then there is nothing that can be done to stop them from being married.

      I'm not saying anything about their moral compass. I'm just pointing out that they didn't agree with gay marriage and hence they wouldn't write a document which supports gay marriage. So obviously the constitution is being interpreted in a way which its authors did not intend.
      In terms of whether they did or didn't agree with gay marriage I would say that since virtually nobody agreed with gay marriage back then the burden of proof is to show that they did support gay marriage, otherwise we have to assume what is very likely; that they didn't support it.
      Also in regards to your statement: "So, not only are gay people equal to straight people, they also have a right to pursue happiness in whatever way they see fit, so long as it does not infringe upon the Rights of another citizen of the US." Couldn't this same argument be used to demand that incest be legalised?

      In all honesty, yes the statement I made could be used as a basis for anything, but, then you would have to look at things like this, has gay marriage ever caused a single birth of a deformed child? The answer is obviously no. However incest has done that.
      I feel that the only reason they would be "against it," is because in their time it was no a major political topic. But, something that is to be noted, is that same sex marriage did occur in that time, because Native American tribes were practicing same sex marriage, so it wasn't something that was unheard of.

      Video Watcher Guy Fair enough. But what if an incestuous couple never had children, e.g. they always used contraception or one of them was infertile? Would it then be ok? What if a brother and sister were genuinely in love with each other and wanted to be married. If they are equal then why don't they get the right to pursue happiness in whatever way they see fit?
      If same sex marriage did occur in that time but it wasn't permissible in the US then surely it is an indication that the founding fathers really did oppose same sex marriage.
      Also I wasn't particularly trying to oppose same sex marriage in this comment (although as you can probably guess I do oppose it), I'm just trying to point out that if people use the constitution to say that banning same sex marriage is unconstitutional then obviously they aren't interpreting it in the way it was intended; rather in the way that they want to.

    I went to architecture school, and a huge number of my friends and classmates were gays still living in the closet. The funny thing is that I never thought about it, I never saw their sexuality as the main aspect that defined who they were. your sexuality should not be what defines you. My closest gay friends just want to have a normal life they should be part of our societey as anyone else. the more normal same sex marriage becomes, the better we will be as society

      amanda2324 Two men or two women can provide FOR offspring that have been left by a man and a woman. They can even provide offspring of their own through donors and surrogates, so the procreation argument falls apart pretty quickly. It's also an argument that diminishes every other contribution a person can make to society besides adding more new people to it.
      So, how can it be better? Well, by a society having marriage as an option for homosexual relationships, and encouraging marriage for homosexual relationships, you do two things: remove stigma and encourage monogamy. Both of those are good for society!
      Removing stigma is good for society, because it makes those people and their families more able to participate in society with less fear. It also lets them feel more a part of society, causing less of the fear and self-destructive behavior that comes from active and government-enforced stigma. If society tells a group of people that they have no place in it, they can become suicidal, make dangerous choices, and care less about their own health and well-being, which can effect the health and well-being of people around them.
      Encouraging monogamy is good for society, because it discourages the spread of disease and creates stability. When a society will not allow for a group of people to pursue monogamy and persecutes them for any relationship, there is no societal reason for them to be in a committed and healthy relationship. Giving them the goal of marriage encourages people to find stability and discourages unsafe promiscuity. Sure, it hasn't eradicated disease, instability and unsafe promiscuity in heterosexuals who are currently encouraged to marry, but it does help.

      What you ignore, though, is the unintended consequences of seeing same-sex relationships as "normal" and something that the government should recognize as little different from opposite-sex couples. When in fact, they are drastically different. One not only contributes to society what no other type of relationship can - procreation, as well as providing their children with a male and female role-model.
      Same-sex couples display an inherent sexism. One sex is unneeded, unwanted, should be disregarded, ignored, and omitted. That is the fundamental basis of a same-sex relationship - they don't like the other sex, so they purposefully exclude the other sex from their relationship. Why should we promote this sort of "head of a family" when it inherently fails to provide children with role models of both sexes, and promotes the idea that one or both sexes can be safely disposed of and purposefully excluded?
      The only reason you have stated, then, that same-sex couples could be beneficial is (maybe) because they can raise children. Well, so can incestuous couples, polygamous couples, and in other countries, marriages between a full grown man and an underaged girl are also raising children. Should we stigmatize these couples, pairings, and families? Should we remove it so that these other "types of families" can be free to form and live their lives without fear?
      But a more important point: the only reason that same-sex couples are seen as so-called "needed" to raise children is because there are children from other relationships that need to be raised. But once that problem is eliminated, then there is no need for same-sex couples. So same-sex couples are only "conditionally" anywhere close to being as beneficial to society as opposite-sex couples, but in reality, no matter what you do, they will never, ever be as good for society as a whole, and children specifically, as opposite-sex couples.
      You say they can use donors and surrogates to create their own children, but then say that they should be monogamous? That's contradictory at best, hypocritical at worst. And so you also promote the idea that there's something fundamentally flawed with their union - they desire children, but biology and reality tell them "No, you two may not have children."
      On the point of encouraging monogamy - what a lie! You obviously know very little of the LGBT community. Many scoff and mock at the idea of monogamy, even when they are married! Many say it is even an insult to their sexual identity to suggest that they should be limited to one partner, even if they do get to get married. Promotes monogamy, don't make me laugh... only in opposite-sex couples does marriage really decrease the chances of either partner having sexual relationships with an outside party. In a lot of same-sex relationships, not only do /both parties/ go out and have sex with third parties, both individuals know about it, talk about it, agree to it, etc. It's also laughable, though very much sad indeed, that you say it "discourages the spread of disease," when homosexuals are the most effected group by the spread of HIV, AIDs, and other sexual diseases. And they've been like that since at least the 80's where, according to the Centers for Disease Control, they accounted for 70% of all cases. Now, considering they're only about 2% of the population, you see where the problem is.

      amanda2324 So, there is a large body of obvious facts that you're completely ignoring. Homosexuals are born the way they are. You can't somehow legislate the gay away with denial of basic rights and dignities. Nor do you create homosexuals by removing the needless bigotry surrounding the topic. Nature has built it into the kingdom of animals that some portion of it is to be born homosexual. It happens wheather you like it or not, and there is no law that we can pass that will result in a boom of reproduction in the homosexual population. It's just so stupid of anyone to think so. I hope you don't.
      You can do whatever sort of ridiculous acrobatics of non-sequitorial logic you like to, but you have to admit that you are just struggling to hold onto filthy bronze age values because you have attachments to supernatural fairy tales that prevent you from having a sufficient taste for reason and evidence. Even if you aren't religious, you need to know that regardless of where you learned your bigotry from, those stupid ideas are ultimately from the Bible.
      How can we get to the business of improving the world when we can't even decide, as a society, against being needlessly cruel to our own people?

      Whether homosexuals are born that way or not is irrelevant. Whether society should recognize and promote same-sex couples in the same way as it does opposite-sex couples is the point of discussion. Please make sure you stay on topic.
      I'm sorry, but that second paragraph does not address anything I actually said. If you're not going to address my points, please be honest and say so.
      What you call "needlessly cruel" another will not see as such. Why I think of as "needlessly cruel," you might think of as such. Using vague terms and labels isn't going to help you make a point, nor further the discussion in any civilized, intelligent, or productive manner.

    It's not a question of "happiness". It's a question of "Rights". and rights are for individuals, not groups of people. Not for communities. You don't give rights because of a person's sexual orientation. Dinesh D'Suza explained it perfectly well. A man and a woman are recognized by their State, in any culture, because of marriage as the only privilège given by the State. Why that ? because when they procreate, they preserve the survival of a nation

    For some it is not an issue of gay marriage, but rather separation of Church and State. Marriage should be a ceremonial issue only for the church. Dependency, inheritance, power of attorney, etc. are all determinable by other laws, other records, and a government license based upon government interference and assumption of religious traditional authority is an entanglement of government in religion that violates the Lemon Test.
    With the abolition of governmental marriage licensing, everyone becomes equal. Children cease to be legitimated by a governmental issuance of documents about whether or not their parents have passed through a religious ceremony. What child is illegitimate? All children are legitimately children and our children. There should be no distinguishing between them by law based on the religious practices of their parents.
    The real issue for homosexuality is not here in the United States or other enlightened countries. The real issue is in those countries where rape is considered an acceptable form of humiliation for a captured enemy; Where the enemy cannot seek treatment for the harm done to them without being ostracized by their family and people; Where a wife will abandon a husband because he can not be counted upon to defend her if he cannot defend himself; Where if a man reports being tortured and raped he and his assailant will both be put to death based on tribal laws that do not recognize the victim as innocent of the crime.
    The issue of same-sex marriage is just like the issue of LGBT bathrooms, it is a matter of privacy. People should not have to be intimate in ways that make them feel insecure. Some things should simply be done in private, such a single occupancy bathrooms and showers. Religious ceremonies are for those willing to participate in them, and should be only for them, no one else should be forced to participate in them - nor should people who offend the celebrants be able to disrupt the services. What I find in most cases is that people are focused on the wrong answer because they have framed the wrong social questions.

      True, in some european countries there is not such thing as a legal marriage. You get a legal union from the geovernment for the tax and inherticance and all that Jazz, then you go to a church to get "married" if you want. Should be the same way here

      I disagree. There should be no "legal union" that is just the government aping religion. A person should make a Will and the Will should determine where their inheritance goes. The fact that there are special treatments for persons who are "coupled" and persons who are not is the problem. If a person has been or is legally claimed in taxes as a dependent, then they are a dependent. There should be no filing jointly as husband and wife, spouse, significant other, etc. There should only be the earnings of the individual offset by dependents. A person should have a Living Will declaring who has power of attorney to terminate their life if they are rendered incapable. A person should not be denied visitation in prison or hospital of anyone who wishes to support them - only those who are likely to harm them. There is no good reason for the government to keep registration on who we are screwing. I refuse to accept government registration of weapons as justifiable, I certainly don't believe the government should maintain files on who is expected to have sex with whom.

More than just inheritance is determined on legal civil union. child custody encase of separation, hell even the ability to adopt. and most intelligent people dont file joint taxes, every body knows you get more money if you file repeatedly. Fact is, legal union are necessary.

    I am always a bit surprised to hear the term "the gay". It sounds a bit like people are referring to another race as opposed to saying "gay people". He doesn't use it in a bad way at all. I am just observing how this phrase seems to have become common place on American videos. I don't think I have heard it in Australia or videos from other countries.
