    I saw an interview with Carol Burnett where she said the writers wanted Carol to play Mamma. When Carol saw the script she said "I'm playing Eunice and we're doing it Southern." The writers almost walked off in protest. When they finally did the show, it was such a success that "the writers couldn't write the Family sketches fast enough."

      They came up with the characters in the bathroom. Carol said “mama do you have any toilet paper?” And Vickie said “well where the he’ll do you think we are? Of course I have toilet paper!” Carl said “well excuse me for living”
      They laughed and instantly went to the writers.

    My favorite dysfunctional family! They make narcissistic abuse funny, God bless them all. The relentless criticism, the total absence of appreciation, the complete lack of love and acceptance, the melodrama that evaporates into thin air. I looked forward to this all week. Watching this and being able to laugh must have saved so many people from despair.

      The best one was with Roddy McDowall. Eunice had a new poodle which the family made a huge deal about. Roddy McDowell had won the Nobel Prize for literature. And Mama asked how long he was going to live off his past achievements. Meanwhile the poodle rolled over and they thought it was the greatest thing on earth.

      pinz2022 - um, no. Why is it that people always assume that blacks always get their ideas from Caucasians? I am not prejudiced. Tyler Perry got the *"Madea"* inspiration by watching certain older women in his family, and or from Martin Lawrence if I'm not mistaken. However, I believe it's from some of the older women in his family. It is also a fact, reality, and truth that people of color are/were the first humans on this planet, starting in Africa, the motherland. Even "Africa" wasn't the original name of that invaded/colonized continent. Just like other continents, countries, and or islands around the planet got renamed by pale-skinned colonizers.

If you are saying when you were 6 years old you acted better than them without acting lessons. Then why smarty mouth didn't you have your own show 🤔?????
      After Shirley Temple was making movies at the age of 5 and was a success. They all made plenty of money. And what's your job ??? And how much did you make without acting lessons????? Yea I thought so. Your a wanna be. And you certainly don't appreciate a good clean laugh. What's disfunctio nAl mean all we did was work night and day , to feed many many people , people would stop by at dinner occasionally and literally run away it was funny then, mom would say well what's a matter with them huh , etc etc just so much like Mrs Lawrence and then she'd sit n laff. Laff at her n Eunice n poor Ed ,
      I miss them all our aunt's uncles grandparents so much now , it's funny but it also hurts so much to see theses old shows .

    The irony of these sketches is that Carol Burnett drew from characters in her own dysfunctional family and that people watching these skits can relate to them because they either have relatives or friends who act this way. The spats between Eunice and her sister Ellen are both funny but also come very close to realty because many sisters carry their petty grudges from childhood into adulthood because "Mom always liked you best." The TV movie "Eunice" told of different years in her life from being a teenager to when her mother died. When Eunice starts crying about her mother dying and blaming her for not allowing Eunice to develop her own life, Ken Barry as the brother steps in and tells Eunice that she is responsible for her own life. That scene allowed Carol to go from her crazy, off the wall Eunice into a character whom we felt sorry for, even though we knew it was only a play.

    • @zabadazidit
      @zabadazidit Рік тому +3

      "Eunice" was groundbreaking in that it was a dramatic comedy, which was unheard-of in 1981. Yes, there was "M*A*S*H" but it wasn't filmed in front of a studio audience. When Eunice breaks down, you can hear sniffs in the audience too. I think the reason "The Family" was so beloved is that people could look at it and see either themselves or people they could relate to.

      @fjccommish 28 днів тому

      Those would sell like hot cakes in rabbit season, especially if Mickey Hart worked his magic by putting them next to something like 3/4" flat head screws.
      Imagine some rabbit hunter walking into the hardware store just before rabbit season. He's looking for a 3/4" flat head screw. He looks around on the shelf, finds the screws,. then sees the traps. He thinks, "what do we have here?" He goes to the register to pay for his screw.
      "Hey, Ed. I see you have those rabbit traps, but nobody buys American rabbit traps. The Japanese traps are the ones that work - they're all the rage."
      Ed: "Them there are Japanese rabbit traps. I only stock the best."
      Rabbit Hunter: "Give me a dozen!"
      When word got out in the rabbit hunting community, they'd be coming from far and wide to buy those traps. Then, with the placement of the 3/4" flat head screws, they'd pick up a few of them too - bonus profit.
