Carol is a hotel operator and overhears the hotel guests conversations. Carol Burnett, Vicki Lawrence, Vincent Price, Joel Grey, and Lyle Waggoner NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED. I DO NOT OWN ANYTHING!
The writers of this sketch are scary brilliant. One mistake, just one, and the whole thing falls apart. Amazing! And the more convoluted it got, the funnier it got.
The timing on this is just exceptional, especially on the 4 way communication with the operator in the middle, including how they have the same body movement. Hilarious!
Anyone else expecting to see this sketch have a conclusion sketch of them all meeting up at the restaurant? And the falling out would have been hilarious
The current generation of 20 year olds has NO IDEA what Carol's character is actually doing with her pulling and plugging in wires. "Hotel switchboard" was actually an enviable job title as recently as the late 1980's. Now, when you call a hotel, you get an automated system.
+70Kenny I worked the front desk of this small hotel in Door County Wisconsin this summer and they have a smaller version of this machine! One of my responsibilities at the front desk was to also answer calls. The "cord board" was such a goofy thing to see and experience. I spent hours playing on this thing once I got the hang of it! Apparently, that board has been there since the hotel opened in 1949. I saw pictures of it from way back then (creepy)! Anyways, I thought I'd share..
+William Mary Really? I thought all those machines had gone to scrap. I know where Winnebago County, Wisconsin is (because I have good friends who live there) but I'll have to look up the location of Door County.
I’d like to point out that I’m 22 and fully understand this operating system haha ^^’ but I knew what you meant, I took care of kids in a school bus before who dont know what a cassette tape is or what dial up internet was like. (Actually about half of the students in my class at college dont know what dial up is....now THATS scary!) (also, sorry for poor grammar).
I love this video, it is always funny. But, being a 608a switchboard operator in the early 70's, I know how it operates and the caller would hear you coming into and out of the line. I kept thinking they were going to say something about her listening, lol.
Another copy of this video was recently deleted from my Watch Later playlist the UA-cam app because it was removed by the uploader. I want the link to the video so I can watch it again online, or, as one of the characters would say, I want the link to that copy-woppy.
@@E.JayViera Well, it all happened the previous year, I'm guessing, and each time with one of the three dudes. Beyond that, I doubt even the writer(s) of the skit knew. :-)

Saturday Night Live should've paid attention to some of these brilliant skits..
I wish they did a second one instead of cutting it right there because I wouldn't miss it for the world either
I've watched this clip at least a dozen times and it's ALWAYS hilarious. That's what make s good comedy.
It's one of my all time fav sketches on the CB Show
That was amazing! One of the best sketches ever!

My head started to hurt in the middle

+70Kenny That is a generalization. I am in that generation and I have always known what a hotel switchboard was
+cutiepatootie3495 That's true. Glad you know your history!

REAL COMEDY IS TIMELESS!

That is what my mother did at the phone company when she first started. Carol Bernnet kicks butt.
Anyone who didn't grow up watching Carol Burnett or any other comedy shows before the 1980's missed out on alot. They don't know what comedy is
I saw this when I was a little kid and couldn't stop laughing.
Am watching this in 2024. Two comic geniuses still with us!
I just loved the carol Burnett show, she is so funny 😂
Miss this show
superb timing!
I used to run a switchboard, just like this, and the conversations that went on were insane! This skit is so very true to how it worked!😅
I would love to hear some stories! You said this skit ran too true, could you tell more?

Lol I did a couple of years graveyard shift back in the 70s. Those were the days!
"Jack Ward's line is busy. Would you holdy woldy?"
She actually said *Mr. Ward
Hilarious!!

@@Zoras88 That's a little easier to figure out. :-)
I’m wondering if the same thing happened all three times or was it three different things.
@@E.JayViera Well, it all happened the previous year, I'm guessing, and each time with one of the three dudes. Beyond that, I doubt even the writer(s) of the skit knew. :-)
