Harbor Freight vs Northern Tool: Mini-tire Changers, Which is Better?

  • So to be fair, this is an incredibly un-scientific comparison. I had two Harbor Freight tire changers, broke the second one, my local HF didn't have one available, so I went to Northern Tool. This is just my take on each product.

Sorry man, You are taking the tire off with the wrong end. A little 3:1 Dish soap to water will make your life a LOT easier as well. Use the ball end to remove the tire. And Use the half round end to put the tire back on. To install; Use a nylon spacer first then put your "Spoon" over that spacer, then the "Cone" small end down to the rim; Then put the Nut as you call it; tighten down. Use the concave end of the cone as a fulcrum to pry up against to get the new tires on. But yes; they are basically the same tool. Thanks for the comparison of the 2. Money is tight now days.

Your arms got quite a work out. I have tools from Harbor Freight and they work fine for what I need. Thanks for sharing.

Yes Harbor Freight isn't terrible, but not the best tools money can buy and in this case, it is the best tool money can buy. Thanks for watching.

Buy full size hf manual tire changer. Break bead on full size machine. To remove small tires, get large 5/8" x 12" long carriages bolt. Mount bolt through sturdy work bench, threads on top. After breaking both beads, place tire/rim , valve stem up, through axle bore onto 5/8 bolt tighten firmly. Now place pipe over exposed hreads for protection , just remove tire same as you would a car tire. Works great

It's funny you commented on this because I just unbeaded two sets of Bronco rims (10 total) to get the TPMS from one set to move to the other. Clearly I didn't use my mini, but used the loader bucket on my 1023E, which worked good, just had to be careful not to get crazy and damage my rims. Worked pretty well overall. Thanks for watching.

Thank you for this video! I just purchased the tire changer from Northern Tool. Haven’t used it yet. I have a made in the USA No Mar motorcycle tire changer that works great but it won’t work on the smaller tires. It’s fun to be a DIYer, unless you injure yourself lol.

Haha, yes, and unfortunately I do injury myself from time to time, nothing serious, but sure enough, you do enough little jobs, eventually you get hurt I guess....or maybe I'm just clumsy🤷‍♂. Thanks for watching.

I have the next size up from that one- the one that bolts to the floor. They are handy, although mine doesn't get small enough to to front wheels on most garden tractors. I've changed dozens of tires over the years of owning it though.

Yeah man, they are handy for sure. Bummer the next step up doesn't cover the smaller rims. Thanks for watching.

Yea, it looks to me like they were made in the same factory, just re-branded. Thanks for this video. I've been looking at those for a while but never pulled the trigger for one! One question I have is do they mark or mess up the paint on the rims when removing or installing a new tire? I also heard of spraying the beads with a silicone spray to aid in tire mounting on wheels. Now where's that 140 vid at? Hahahaha..... I just had to do that!!!!

Yep, I am close to the 140 video, just got to get over that last hill. They can mark up the rims if you are not careful. For the most part, it does a decent job of getting them on and off. Some more challenging than others for sure. The PB Blaster does actually help, LOL. Thanks for watching.

6 months too late I seen a few people have recommended using soap to help with removal and installation. Thanks for the honest review .

I have used soap to install and have used PB Blaster to uninstall old tires after soaking. I always appreciate the comments as I do the same job later with the wisdom of these comments. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for the reply! I’m currently as I type swapping 12” golf cart tires with a board prybar and my suv. It’s working better than I thought. It’s a 2 hour round trip to harbor freight for me lol.

@@Jonsellscoolstuff Well, next time you swing by there then maybe. It can be done without a mini-tire changer, but those little things do pay for themselves for sure. And you're welcome, I try to get back to anyone thoughtful enough to leave a comment.👍👍

You're supposed to use the little ball in to take the tires off the end you're using is for putting the tire on it might go a little easier for you
