    Heard it straight away and knew what was, it's the O2 pump that warms the cat. Also means your cat could also be on the way or getting to much back pressure

  • @Fookse

    Hey mate, it's definitely sounds like your airpump. It only works when the car is cold to pump regular temperature air into the headers\extractors. Since you have no cat you don't need it. It will throw a CEL on the odd occasion if it's a cold morning. I had this same noise when my air pump failed. My AEM intake also makes that sound from the filter sucking in that air. Unplug your airpump then start it up on when she's cold. Hope this helps mate. Love your work keep it up! Keen to see the drift build! ✌

    It's possibly the SSV in the intake. The rotating valve that controls what ports are being used across the rev range. It may be stuck in a bad spot leaving it between two positions. That can cause some strange noises as air passes through. It's not uncommon for the SSV to get clogged up and need cleaning.

    • @Drivenbymadness

    Have you thoroughly cleaned the throttle body? How did you verify no vacuum leaks? Did you spray the hoses with soapy water to test for any leaks in your hoses?

  • @leed2883
    @leed2883 7 років тому +1

    If the noise is at idle, and less when you rev the engine, i would suggest oil metering pump / jet is blocked. Vacuum is taken before the throttle body to meter the oil injected into the engine. Google "rx8 oil metering pump noise" a couple of people have similar issues

    • @Drivenbymadness
      @Drivenbymadness  7 років тому +1

      Lee D its exactly like that. Idle is very loud, and when revving or accelerating, or even when driving normally, the noise is quiet

    • @leed2883
      @leed2883 7 років тому +1

      Driven by madness if the noise started around two months ago and you fitted the aftermarket intake prior to that, then i would refit oem intake and run for a few miles (say 100). And see if that helps. Good luck from a fellow rx8 owner in the UK.

    Try disconnecting the alternator when running to take the load of it.
    The alternator can still charge even if it has a bad rectifier. That's what it sounds like to me. But it it is hard trying to listen on a video.
    Just unplug the input connector it should have 4 maybe 6 wires coming from it it will be a square type plug. Only takes 30 seconds to do. That way you know either way. Cheers from Queensland Australia. Mark.

    Check the ball bearing on the generator, stick a screwdriver on top of it and put your ear into the screwdriver and listen, do the same around in the enginebay. If the sound is really loud on the generator compared to other places, replace the ballbearings in the generator, or just swap the whole generator. Tommy, Norway

    It's the same sound when you unplug the top hose just before your throttle body and listen to it. It is connected to the intake ports in the lower intake manifold and it seems like it's the rotors spinning that makes the sound.

    Mine is making the exact same noise from the intake. I've done some research and it could be the hoses between the MAF and TB with the stock intake, I see your intake still has them. One goes to the oil fill thing, and the others bugger off somewhere into the deeper engine bay. If you pinch either of the other two closed and the noise goes away, according to the official Mazda service manual the fix for the noise is to ignore it. If you can't ignore it, then replacing those hoses can sometimes get it to go away. Alternatively, it could be one of the three vacuum solenoids on the back of the upper plastic intake manifold, they have blue, black, and white plugs on them and are stacked vertically. They run the air injection pump valve, along with two of the three intake manifold tuning valves including the SSV that allows the high end power. I suspect that since it is coming from the intake so loudly with the throttle body closed though that it is just the first two hoses, and can safely be ignored. That's how I'm fixing mine for now anyways lol.

    Idk y it would come from the intake, but if it sounds like a go kart, then it's the air pump. Mine was REAAALLY loud, and it probably went bad because of the EVAP solenoid not working properly. It wasn't opening the valve and the air pump tried forcing air in until it gave out. I actually had a CEL from this regarding the air pump. It sounded loud for quite some time until the ECU decided to throw the code.

    If your LTFT is within spec then you don't have a vacuum leak. Although it does sound like one. You have narrowed it down to the throttle body, is it clean? Is there carbon buildup in the throttle body. ? Also this might sound crazy but there are 2 one way check valves that connect to the vacuum ports on the TB, these can whistle believe it or not. Check them.

  • @DENetworkES
    @DENetworkES 6 років тому +1

    If this happened after you changed the intake you might have clogged something after you installed the intake because aftermarket filters tend to have very poor filtering. Better airflow but poor filtering. So some crap might have got through the vacuum lines to for example the jet air line or one of the oil injectors.

    If it stops after about a minute or so after the car has been running then it is the secondary air pump. DO NOT disconnect it as this pump is used to protect your CAT during cold engine start. If the sound is constantly on even after engine warm up and has been running for a while then make sure the secondary air pump is actually not on constantly, could be the control relay has failed or worst yet the pump has failed.
    If the sound increase with revs then you have a bearing failure somewhere, could be the alternator bearing, tensioner bearing etc.

    • @Drivenbymadness
      @Drivenbymadness  7 років тому +1

      Fireicer Cooper the sound is constant, when I drive the car it gets more silent, but when it idles, its loud. I don't have a cat, I have a de-cat :)

    • @FireicerCooper

    • @FireicerCooper

  • @markboersma8694
    @markboersma8694 7 років тому +1

    I'm not a proper mechanic but is the sound coming from the throttlebody itself? Maybe it has to do with the exhaust recirculation. Otherwise i would say it could be a bearing inside the engine, the e-shaft (crackshaft) bearing is known to slip around sometimes, cutting off it's own oil supply. You could check this by draining you oil and look at it, if there are some copper bits in there it could be the e-shaft bearing. Sounds pretty nasty to me though, good luck with it! This might be an expensive one 😓

    • @Drivenbymadness
      @Drivenbymadness  7 років тому +1

      No, i won't think the engine has something to do with it. Otherwise it would be present even before the CAI. Because after installing it, the sound manifested, and from that moment on, it stayed.

    • @markboersma8694
      @markboersma8694 7 років тому +1

      Like I said, i'm not a mechanic but to me it sounded like a dying bearing and the e-shaft one is the one that usually goes... and with the original airbox it became more silent, but in normal driving the original airbox is always more silent then the open filter so therefore it might be the enige. I really hope for you that it turns out to be a leaking airhose or something though, good luck man!

    Sorry man my English is not so well but I try to explain my point
    You are looking for that noise on intake system
    But for me is not in intake
    Because the king of noise it sound if there is some friction in rotation of some king of things
    In my option is not the intake but the alternator that it is just behind the intake
    The sound is a bit reduce because the intake can amplificate or reduce the noise in base of the shape
    Sorry for my English and tell me if I helped you or not

    yeah I'd that issue also.. it's like yours becaming very noticeable when I'd an aftermarket intake fitted.. several months pondering & checking this that & its mother.. only to (after say 1/2 a year) my front rotor apex seal failed.
    I'd check some oil lines making sure there not blocked up, I know from reading up on the owners club yrs ago theirs 1 line particular to becoming gunked up & preventing (its either a vacuum breather line or oil delivery line, think its a breather line) when it becomes blocked up obviously it prevents one action from being performed which then contributes to failing engines (I'd do some checking online ASAP) you'll find info regarding the line i'm talking about..
    also a small note!! your intake isn't efficient this also isn't going to be helping your engine perform
    have you considered putting 2 stroke oil into your fuel mixture (many ppl do this to aid in oil delivery for the rotary engine)

    • @Drivenbymadness
      @Drivenbymadness  7 років тому

      Mal P ill definitely.check the oil lines this week, as this is.my concern to, because I think.the top tube on the intske makes.the sound, and that tube is connected to.the omp, so I'll have that checked first. I already premix my engine :)

    At first check out the vakuum hose, that goes from the air intake to the oil injectors. You can increase the oil consumption, if you reduce the diameter of this hose. This hose gives the same sound if it leaks. If it leaks, your apex seals will get almost no oil.

      This hose is the one marked with yellow line. If you hold the end of the hose with your finger, it should be silent (also the idle will be a little bit higher, because of more oil). If it still gives the high pitch sound, maybe it comes from it and you have found the problem.

  • @Onkldagobert
    @Onkldagobert 7 років тому

    I cant say what it exactly is but it sounds like a resonance vibration caused by maybe one of the running belt and getting louder over the intake. Sound makes its way like a wave and over the metal parts a resonance vibration is possible. I guess the intake ,cause of its form, makes it easier for the sound to go through. Thats i guess why its more quiet with the original intake. Maybe something is grinding somewhere. But maybe iam wrong, just my thoughts. If someone knows it better or i speak complete bullshit then feel free to correct me.
