    So you're telling me if i buy seafoam my rx8 will blow fat O's? Pfft screw compression that alone is worth 8 bucks.

  • @essexrotary1540
    @essexrotary1540 6 років тому +74

    Driven... Sea foam will improve compression if the low compression is caused by excessive carbon build up within the engine around the seals (usually apex seals) this reduced their ability to travel freely and impacts compression.
    However if your low compression is down to worn seals then it will not help any further than what you have explained in this video.

      In his case carbon build up was actually sealing the engine. So in final what he actually did was make it worse ;)

    I think the cranking speed went up a bit because you actually lost some compression if some of the carbon build up got removed, thus increasing the size of the combustion chamber. This is because your intake side stays the same volume because it had no carbon to begin with.

    I know you aren’t really supposed to seafoam the car very often but could you please make a video explaining how to actually seafoam the car like the details of it and everything and the effects like what to do after or if engine lights come on or if you should drive differently at first. All the tutorial vids suck and I’d love to do this to clean my 8 but I want to make sure I do it 100% correct and your tutorial vids are usually really good

    Very great video! Would you please do the same video with Mazda Zoom Cleaner? That woud be awesome bro.
    Edit: I only see results between 5.9 and 6.3 bar after your cleaning... where did you measure 4.97 bar?
    Once again: 8-8.5 bar is very good result for a rotary engine. Brand new factory engines have that great result.

      Have you normalized the readings? Check out my how to test a compression video, and you'll see that after the measurement you need to normalize the PSI that you have with the cranking speed, and the results are different :)

    Alright so about 2 weeks ago I started my RX-8 cold and there was white smoke coming out of the tailpipe, this had never happened before but now every once in awhile when I cold start it in the morning I will see white smoke sometimes it's a lot sometimes it's a little and sometimes it's not at all and it has been consistently going away when I start to drive (as far as I can tell). I know oil has a bluish smoke but this smoke is undoubtedly white so I know it's not oil. I have heard that it is coolant leaking into the combustion chamber or something like that but I'm not sure. I've searched on the RX-8 forums but everybody there is convinced that any small problem with an RX-8 is a for sure sign of apex seal failure and scream that you need a rebuild so now I have come here. Any input?

    I think you will see much better results by just using water ..it steam cleans the engine of carbon as it passes through.most losses of compression are from overheated warped, or damaged apex seal..or lack of clean oil..which can damage the rotor housings as well

  • @Snoopi25
    @Snoopi25 6 років тому +26

    I have one question for you. Did you do all of this in one day? Because it doesn't look like it's been done properly. I had my engine decarbed by Elite Rotary Shop, and there was a significant difference. Seafoam helps a lot in cleaning gunk of the type that doesn't allow the apex seals to move up and down freely. I had extremely uneven rotor faces. On a single rotor, I had anywhere between 75 and 90 PSI. After the seafoam treatment, all rotor faces are at 90 PSI at 250RPM. Also, those numbers you showed after the test might be misleading. You now have higher crank speed, which in itself means more compression, but the numbers need to be adjusted to the cranking speed that they're supposed to be adjusted to. My 8 also brap-ed better after the decarbing was done ;)

    • @Drivenbymadness
      @Drivenbymadness  6 років тому +6

      Yes, i did it in 1 day. Sadly i don't know the method the elite rotary shop uses, but i'm guessing it's not the same. My method is the traditional method of seafoaming the rx8.
      The numbers i had were normalized by using a rotary compression calculator. here's the link:foxed.ca/index.php?page=rotarycalc
      You can try and run my numbers and see if you get a different result. My altitude is 33meters.
      I suppose your compression was tested with a rotary compression tester? In which case the results were more accurate.
      But i'm happy that you had a great experience with it and benefited from that :)

    • @Snoopi25
      @Snoopi25 6 років тому +1

      Yes, rotary compression tester. Ok, I wasn't sure if your results were normalized, so that's good. Elite didn't tell me exact way they do it(for obvious reasons), but all I know is that you should let the rotors soak in that stuff for a lot longer, like 1 whole day for just 1 rotor. It took them 2 days to do it, and I was told that the car would sit and "marinate" (if I could put it that way lol) before they would crank it again. Not sure if they did it 1 rotor at a time or both at same time, but it took a span of 2 days, that much I do know. I also know that if not done properly, it can deteriorate the other seals from the rotors (i.e. the side seals, etc. etc.).

    Hey! Most of the "how to seafoam guides" on forums for rx8 they do both the ports at the same time, and here you do 1 port then start the engine and then after you do the second port. Is it ok to do both ports at the same time?

    • @Drivenbymadness
      @Drivenbymadness  6 років тому +1

      I did this because i saw almost everyone doing 1 port by 1. I though that putting seafoam in both housings at the same time, could potentially flood it. But that's just my personal fear, which is not proven. But i did it like that just to be safe :)

  • @cisjga
    @cisjga 6 років тому +3

    You need to give the oil film time to re coat the housings and then do another compression test. The seafoam has washed all the oil film away, that is why you see a drop in compression after seafoam. All theoretical of course. Time will tell.

    • @Drivenbymadness
      @Drivenbymadness  6 років тому

      Well, i've put a higher ratio of premix inside before the test just for this matter. But i don't think the compression will get any better

    • @cisjga
      @cisjga 6 років тому +1

      After seafoam it is good to put oil into the rotor housings before starting it as the film layer will be gone. Mazda actually turns the OMP up to full for 15 minutes after seafoaming. I put alot of 2 stroke oil straight through the plug holes before I started mine. Then the heavy premix helps the buildup of the oil film again. Check your compression in about a month. It is too early now.

    • @Drivenbymadness
      @Drivenbymadness  6 років тому +1

      Well, it's not that difficult. The video that i've listed in the description is kind of clear of what to do. Disconnect 3 connectors shown, remove one of the 2 caps on the side ports, attach a tube to one of the side ports of the engine, and the other side of the tube in the seafoam bottle. Go inside the car and crank it for 5 seconds wait 10 and crank again for 5 secs. remove the tube, put back the cap on the side ports, and start the car to get the smoke out :)
      hahah i've seen that video yeah, and seafoam will not destroy your engine, but it if done frequently, it will clog your catalytic converter.
      Hmmm, you won't be getting compression back with seafoam, the car will just idle and start better, and maybe have a smoother ride. Thank you so much ! :D Wing Zero says hello back :3

      Joham Borrero did you try the mashing brake trick?

    • @flamez0101
      @flamez0101 6 років тому +1

      Mashing break trick:
      1- without turning on the car open the switch
      2- as soon as you open the switch quickly mash the brake pedal until you see the OIL gauge needle go up and then down
      3-turn on the car and drive it
      This happen to me as well i changed Coils, Plugs, Plug wires,Red Gel Optima Battery, Cleaned my Injector(all 4 of them),Replace all 3 Valve Selenoid(2 behind intake one on the Air pump), replace both O2 sensors, i did replace the starter as well,i got no Catalytic, just had a rebuild as well about 3 weeks ago and after doing the pedal my car started to turn on again faster when hot and cold. turns out that sensor all it needed was a reset but you can't do it with a OBDII reader has to be through the brake pedal thing.
      Do you get a Cell code?, check engine light at at all?

      flamez0101 at first I had the mass flow air sensor code. But I had just replace it ,so one of my friends has the snap on computer so erased the code and now I have no codes. I'm try that break Pedel to see if that dose anything

    I actually did extensive searches to find the best oil for car and I came up with BMW Twin Turbo Longlife 5w30 being the best oil for less engine/apex seals wear.
    Here is the spreadsheet docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1PyqwOsgVomOqBHvoU0gBWsYpupRlfeIEYQaNcwTBbhA/edit?usp=drivesdk

      Changing oil in time is way more important than which oil to use. The brand of oil doesn't even really matter.

      mrawesomelemons when it comes to normal cars yes. But when it comes to high performance turbo/supercharger cars it's not like that. A good oil with good specs will have less wear on the long term. Apex seals touch the metal of the rotor making it wear so having a good oil sprayed on the rotor walls will decrease wear long term and prolong the life of the apex seals before a rebuild is needed.

      i recommend the Idemitsu 5W30 full synthetic Oil, IDEMITSU developed only for the Mazda 787B on the 24Hr. LeMans run a high performance Oil for the 4 rotor rotary engine so i think this will gonna be the best oil for a rotary you can get, they're even producing Pre-Mix oil for every Rotary so i think this would be the best solution for the RX ^^

      In my opinion, there is no best oil to use, where the oil has to burn and lubricate at the same time. The best oil combination is using a sohn adapter to run 2 stroke oil only to lubricate the apex seals and burn, and a separate fully synthetic oil 10w40 or 5w50 to lubricate the rest of the engine parts where the oil does not burn. Oil brands don't matter much, just dont use cheap oils :)

    You left the valve core out of the compression tester. The compression tester should hold pressure until it is released.

      The way you test the compression on a rotary engine is a bit different than on a piston engine. You can check out my how to test compression video :)

      X H Some time has passed since then, and i got a lot of feedback on the compression test, and also the part you mention. So to make the compression test guide more precise i'm re-uploading the compression test video. Thanks for your feedback :)

    Run seafoam every other fuel up til you have put it in 10x. (20 fuel ups) and during this redline it ALOT like every chance you get... Even on your off fuel ups redline the fuck out of it... Heat the carbon a lot and it will flake a bit then seafoam will dissolve it. After this process you will be surprised how much it cleans the internals. (This is 1 full bottle seafoam in the gas tank. Make sure it's 10gallons or more. The off fuel ups ensure you get most of the seafoam out before you add more again so you don't damage the engine by getting too concentrated of a mixture)

      I will do that, only i have to tear down a lot of parts, and it's a paint to do it twice. So when i'll have everything disassembled i'll make 2 videos. 1 is the sohn adapter, and the other about the noise :)

      Thats after taxes? A month? 😐
      Insurance alone for a 16yo is probably gonna be at least $140-160 a month, and thats for BASIC liability.
      Im 42 and I pay $100 a month for FULL coverage on a 2017 Lancer ES(non evo) Basic liability on a 2004 RX8 would probably run me half that.

    But let's be clear: It worsened the compression ratio.

    • @Drivenbymadness
      @Drivenbymadness  6 років тому

      Could be that the engine was more warmed up than when i did the first test. That wold explain the lower compression. But this is just my theory. Imo, seafoam as it self does not gain lost compression, and if it does the result is minimal with no noticeable gain.
