Hognoses don't really bite. When scared they hood up and play dead. However they can bite on accident if they strike you instead of pray, or if there REALLY pushed to bite. They will however do false strikes to try and scare, but not actually bite.
Hognose: Hood, Hiss, Bite, Flatten out Emily: Awwww! How cute! Hognose: I already know that no matter how hard you try I will never lose my attitude. I hate you already. Emily: *Still thinks it is cute* 😂😂😂
Beautiful snakes. When I was younger, we used to catch diamondback and timber rattlers and sell them to the University of Georgia anti-venom unit. We also caught corals, but you won't believe where we caught them. Korger distribution in Forrest Park Georgia got banana shipments from central America and there were often some corals in the bananas. Happy herping!
Maybe show them a video Emily has of her egg-eating snakes? They have no teeth to bite with, no venom, and don't get as large as other species. Also someone squeamish about snakes might be uncomfortable with feeding mice to them too, so eggs are very clean. I am not a snake owner myself, and have no experience, I am just suggesting this to perhaps get them acclimated to the idea of a snake. Take away the parts of something that makes it scary, and it's not so scary. :)
Nevermind about showing them a video, seeing one eat might freak them out more... maybe just tell them about egg eaters and how they have no teeth and stuff, and show them a video of baby garters being fed worms? Desensitization or acclimation may be your best bet. Slowly introduce the concept of snakes not being scary.
I am quite found of Western hognose cause I love their unique faces. But the Easterns do have amazing colors and look surprisingly cobra like. I think the real answer is I love snakes and wish I could have them all! :D
Eastern is my favorite, simply for the fact that I can tell an uneducated friend/company that it's a baby cobra. Always freaks them out when I free hand them
Dude she was just keeping them in the small boxes while she was showing them they have a bigger enclosure chill and as for the snake she received their only kept there for a few hours while being shipped she probably gave it a bigger enclosure after showing it and snakes do fine in bags obviously not plastic though
Blindly reaching in nope wouldn't do that. On the small chance that you were accidently shipped a different species could be a real bad day. Just take a quick glance. Awesome vid though.
Spoiler- My husband had already opened the box before making the video because I didn't have a chance to film right away. So I already knew what was in there ;) Because you're right, blindly reaching in would not be a good idea! It was the first time I unboxed her though.
Snake Discovery Either snake is just as good. What I like about them is that they hood up because I thought only cobras did that, and we all know how dangerous cobras can be. Take care and God bless.
Snake Discovery I like both eastern and western hognosed snakes, and it wouldn't make a difference either way. If I had to choose, I'd use a coin and say if it's heads, I'd take the eastern; and if it's tails, I'd take the western. I like the way they hood up because I thought only cobras hood up, and we all know how dangerous cobras can be. Take care and God loves you.
I love how they think they're so intimidating, when really, they're cuter than ever. Their defense works, but not the way they expected it to. Westerns are cuter than easterns, imo. They're both cute, though.
Gorgeous snakes! Hognose snakes are actually what initially got me interested in snakes. I grew up in a really rural area where snakes were pretty heavily demonized. (Rattlesnakes galore and even non-venomous snakes were considered pests.) So I grew up with that mentality. Now I'm very proud to say I love snakes and try to advocate for them as much as I can with friends and family. They're absolutely amazing creatures and so fascinating to learn about! (I also actually have two Hognose snakes of my own! Henry is pretty chill, but Harvey has an attitude comparable to a grizzly bear in spring.)
I just love hognose snakes!! I found a tiny tiny little 7 inch eastern hognose yesterday. I almost kept him as a pet but found a wonderful place for him away from my job site. I'm sure he's very happy now.
That was great for you to let him go! Easterns are such stubborn eaters. I might have more hognoses this season- my conda female is laying eggs as we speak! More details to come soon in a video!
Probably the first video I absolutely HAD to comment on, 'cause I LOVE these guys! We get them under our shed every year here in GA, and I absolutely love them. They're probably the only feral snake that I don't mind handling, 'cause they chill out and allow handling on the regular with surprising quickness.
I love you Charizard(?) belt. (Is it Charizard? Did I get the name right)? I like Western Hognose Snakes. Specifically the Conda Morph. Love ya' Snake Discovery!!! ❤ :]
Both Western and Eastern hognoses are beautiful in their own right 😍💓 Watching your videos and doing my own research has definitely got me interested in the species 😊 I love the dark colors of the Eastern! Their defense mechanism of flattening out their hood is very interesting. I just have a royal python atm, but I am definitely going to get a couple of different boas, a Kenyan sand boa and a Columbian, but a conda hognose might also be in my future 😄 Your bull snakes are also stunning!
Sorry just discovered your videos so this comment is not timed well but I had to say the eastern hognose ( the only hognose i am familiar with) has always been a fav of mine since I was young and found this friendly charmer of a snake in the woods across from my parents house. I brought him home to show my family but later took him home to his. Do not remember how I knew he was a hognose when i first saw him. Guessing it was reading the World Book Encyclopedia. We lived with copperheads and rattlers so it was important to know your snakes. Was great seeing one again, thank you.
I love how the easterns flatten themselves out like a pancake and I love their coloring but I can’t get over that adorable little nose on the westerns 😍
GodOfHyperDeath It depends on what you're looking for and what you're prepared to spend. Do you want an active snake or one that will sit with you? Do you want something big or small? Colubrids like corn snakes, kings, garters, hognoses, etc. tend to be more active, but their husbandry is a bit easier. By contrast, pythons and boas are great, but will require higher himidty, etc.
GodOfHyperDeath Maybe a king snake/milk snake? They are diurnal, so they are pretty active during the day and can get to be a good size (ex. A Cali king is about 3-4 ft on average.) They also come in a variety of stunning colors. They have a reputation for being a bit fiesty when they're younger, but that's the case with most colubrids.
I love your videos. You're so fun! I prefer the Western hognose because I love the patterns of the wild type and that upturned nose is just too cute for words.
Can hognoses ever have bands in their coloration? I'm still trying to identify a dead snake I saw one time that doesn't look like anything on my state's registry
Snake Discovery ahh, I wish I took one. This was a few years back while I was working. The best I could do is give a description of it. I'm thinking it was either a hognose or some sort of water snake
natural4lifemiss they're not bins... They're tubs, big difference... A bin is for trash and a tub can be used for animals like snakes and spiders, She's a breeder so she don't have space for 20 enclosures, plus Hognose snakes get 3.5 foot at max so a tub that's 2 foot in length and 1 foot in width is good enough for these snakes.
Doesn't have space ok.Big difference not really bin/tub not everyone calls clear plastic bin's tub's.A tub is something you bathe in.A bin has multiple purposes.
natural4lifemiss nope, a bath tub is something you bath in... And they do have space they're just smaller for the smaller snakes, her adult hognoses are in like 60 quart tubs(which are massive)
Out of curiosity...does feeding rodents have any impact on a hognose's health If they usually eat frogs/toads in the wild? I intend to get a western hog but still have some research to do before i fully commit.

Lol 😂😂😂😂😆
Hahaha that just makes it more cute
To be fair I think the box was removed before she was taken out of the bag, so I don’t think the snake was able to read it. I may be wrong though.

Her: I’m not intimidated at all. I think it’s really cute

To be fair, Hognose snakes are pretty much completely harmless to humans.
They don’t bite not even easterners I’ve never gotten bit by mine just booped

Can westerns and eastern cross breed? And if they do would it cause any problems for the hatchlings?
since she said they were different species, they likely wouldnt be able to have hatchlings/the hatchlings would have congenital problems
