  • RED is a Training School about the “Basics in Astrobiology”. Astrobiology addresses questions related to the origins of life, its evolution, and distribution in the Universe. This school aims to offer an interdisciplinary training in astrobiology to students and young researchers having a master’s degree in astronomy, planetology, geology, chemistry, biology, or history and philosophy of science. If you are preparing a thesis or are an early career scientist with a subject related to astrobiology, this training school is for you! Each year, the “in-person” edition of the school is held in March in Le Teich (France). In June, a virtual school with the same program is also organized.
Cyprien Verseux leads the Laboratory of Applied Space Microbiology at the ZARM (University of Bremen, Germany). His research group develops bioprocesses in support of future crewed missions to Mars. During his doctoral research, he contributed to astrobiology projects including the EXPOSE-R2 space mission. He also conducted field work, most notably during a one-year appointment as the Station Leader and as Glaciologist at the Concordia research station (Antarctica) and as Crew Biologist in the one-year, NASA-funded HI-SEAS IV mission (Mauna Loa volcano, Hawaii).

Carmen Possnig is a medical doctor and PhD candidate in space physiology at the University of Innsbruck. Before starting her PhD, she spent a year as the European Space Agency Research Medical Doctor at Concordia Station in Antarctica, investigating how humans adapt to extreme environments. Her current research focuses on how the human cardiovascular system and eyesight changes in microgravity, with the aim of keeping astronauts healthy and fit on future spaceflights to the Moon and Mars. Since 2022, she is a member of the European Space Agency’s astronaut reserve.
