Thanks for this. I'm a native Angelino, now living in New England. It was nice revisiting some of my old haunts with you. My dad used to take us to Philippe's when we were kids, and his dad used to take him there, when he was a kid. (Dad was born in 1928.) BTW, I'm afraid you were misinformed: 'Philippe' is a French name, and is pronounced 'fil-leep.' It doesn't matter whether you're in France or L.A., that's the only way you say it. 'Felipe', on the other hand, is Spanish. That's pronounced 'fay-lee-pay,' wherever you are. Both are language variants of the name 'Philip'. The classic LA restaurant is 'Philippe' and is pronounced accordingly. Always. Only. Forever. I think the person who told you it didn't matter was trying to be nice. After all, the customer is always right.
You're right! My French buddy corrected me after I published the video. I guess I had misremembered what I heard many years ago. I really should do better research before hand lol 😬 I'm really glad you could revisit your childhood through my video. Seeing things you grow up with still being around is always a nice and nostalgic experience. It's also amazing about your dad and grandfather. Love hearing things like that. Thanks for watching and commenting!
My mom introduced my sis and me to Philippes around 1955 when we were kids. I so looked forward to going whenever possible. We lived in Alhambra so not too far. She went there as she grew up in L.A. circa 1920. I left LA long ago but try to go to Philippe's when I'm down there.

@@moryan6447Thnx for the reply, Spector bought the place in 1998 for 1.1 million, so he could live there alone except for 24 hr security and his driver / chauffeur! The place was built in 1928, so others have dwelled there as well! But he was a weird one that couldn't accept rejection!
Lol, I mean I guess you can make that argument, but the Idea is that they already existed before the sandwich was invented. That someone had asked for it years after the restaurant opened. I think the story is that the sandwich fell into some juice and the guy said he would eat it anyway and he actually liked it. Again, years after the restaurant opened. They didn't open "because" of the sandwich. One of life's mysteries...
I used to live in the miracle mile before the Grove was built. They tore down most of the historic farmers market and surrounding buildings to build the grove and jacked up the parking prices.
I really enjoyed going to all these restaurants. Which one seemed the most interesting to you that you would want to visit in Los Angeles? Did you enjoy the format of this video? Will post more in the future. Let me know what you want to see more (or less) of!
The first place was okay. The second place. The grill cheese sandwich was it made with white and orange cheese. The third place looked great all of the food made with love heart understanding to give you a delicious sandwich the best way they can.at Coles .
Did the Philippe mustard clear up that acne? It's horseradish based and goes right up the nose. 🤧😂 The hidden gem of Philippe's is their wine by the glass list and prices. You will never find high end Napa wines for that cheap per glass and it's stored properly (see back counter).👍
Thank you! It's one of my first vids so there's a lot I don't like about it that I'm improving on for the next video, but appreciate the kind comments. 😊
Thanks! A lot of people said it's boring. I was experimenting with the format and going for laid back to see if it clicks with anyone. You can't please everyone, so I appreciate the comment 😊

What a great video. I've been to some old restaurants and bars in LA (Musso and Frank and the Apple Pan come to mind, as well as the late, great Clifton's Brookdale cafeteria. But now I have five new-old places to check out on my next visit to LA!
Will keep that in mind for next time! Unfortunately Magees is a tad expensive since they are at farmers market but the sandwiches are pretty damn good! Will need to make some time to go back. Thanks for the comment 😊
I have a confession: I don't eat beef. But I'm thinking whether in the future I should take a bite if I make another food review video... I'm still on the fence. Sorry to disappoint everyone 😢
Why in the world would you order a grilled cheese sandwich at a place that is known for their French Dip? I guess nobody else does this, that's why they were out of American cheese.
@Brianmoody. I think the grilled cheese was using American cheese, which is just "cheese food / product) and not very good for your heath, should b cheddar or real cheese, nor cheese whiz! LoL!
This dude must not be a local... all of these places are old but they ALL suck. Especially Phillips*..... Mediocre service, bland meats, small portions for the price, sides are the worst....Fry's are soggy and under cooked.. ugly dim gray atmosphere from the poor fifties...don't go. In the 60s it was famous by LAPD... TERRIBLE...
100% correct. Aside from the mustard at Philippe, the food at all these places sucks and is overpriced with portions that wouldn’t satisfy a 12 year old kid.
Those are not top 5 oldest. I didn't screw up anything. On the bright side, this video acts as a documentary for those who want to learn what the actual oldest restaurants in LA are
I'm going to redo the video. I learned a lot. And was thinking of doing the next five that includes those you mentioned. Lots to do. Also Canters and Langer's are awesome. Amazing places Thanks for mentioning them

It’s like going to the four oldest pizza parlors in NY and reviewing their hot dogs 🤷🏻♂️
Cole’s > Phillips’s
didn’t try the french dip at either place? why even go? grilled cheese 😂
No shit!!! You get a grilled cheese to shut a bratty kid up. ADULTS don't go to a restaurant and order a grilled cheese....it's just not done!!!
This guy and his Turkey sandwiches. Come on, order the good stuff.
I used to have lunch at "The Saugus Cafe" when I lived and worked in Santa Clarita. Goid food, good selection, and pure nostalgia !
Great little place. I love their selection. Even though not much different than most diners I would absolutely go back!

If Philippe opened before Cole's, doesn't that answer the question of who invented the French dip? Why yes, it does.

Yeah we were thinking about top 10 oldest but the cost and work would have been too much. The Pantry is great though.

I’ve never had more bland food in my life. I’ve had better food in hospitals than I had at the pantry. Serious shit.
