CLEARING A JAM IN THE DK2 WOOD CHIPPER

- This is the first time I really jammed up our DK2 wood chipper while chipping and in this video I take you along as I attempt to clear it.
Note that after a year of use and chipping brush in all morning before jamming it, I continue to be very happy with this machine!
I am just a regular guy using this on our 30 acre homestead. I am also not affiliated with the company in any way.

After a year of use and adding small brush all morning before I jammed it, I still continue to be very happy with this machine. ~ Rich
It's not how much we have but how much we enjoy ,,,that makes happiness....You're doing things with passion..that's great...
Thanks so much! Really appreciate those kinds words.
That was the scariest video with Rich putting his hands in the chipper. I know he was being safe, but it just made my heart palpitate. Not the machine for me, but I love the wood chips. I can think of a million places to put them. Good job, Rich and Kathie.
We will save you some chips!!! I’m sure we’ll have more than enough👍
Your videos are EXCELLENT! Most seem to be about how good the chipper works - It was especially nice to see what happens and how you can correct something when it doesn't work! Great job! I definitely will be buying this model from either Lowes or Home Depot - Thanks again!
Thanks! Appreciate that and hope you like it as much as we do👍
Day after day, always the sunshine, very good the machine shredding and the job of quality, tank you very much for the gentleman , one moment in video. Class
Thanks! Appreciate that very much.
Good evening both of you 😊 Next time beford putting you hand, disconet the spark plugs wire of the top of the spakes plugs, in case of a back fire cause by a vapor boiling in the carburetor,,, Even if the switch if off ( inition key ) to be on the safe side than sorry,,, Cheers 👍
Good idea and you are right, better safe than sorry 👍
@@CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid you would need to remove the spark plug to be safe.If it backfired as said and the piston at TDC compression stroke it would rotate the drum. With plug out there is no compression.
For the price range, the DK2 looks like a good purchase. All chippers jamb, so that shouldn't scare away people who understand machinery. If it is maintained properly and the blades are sharpened/changed, when needed, it should last you many years. Thanks for your videos. They are helping me with my decision.
Thank you and I agree with all that you said. Into second year with this and still going strong. Very happy with this purchase👍
I bought one and it's junk. The internal components came apart after 7 hours and it shredded itself.
Sorry to hear about that, Mamma. I checked on the tightness of all bolts when I assembled mine. It has worked great for me. @@YoMamma-dy8gu
Almost a necessity on a treed property, great mulch and composting material well at hand, hope great days for you two !
Thanks, you too!
Rich, I couldn’t unjam my 2nd Jam with your method. I used the method in the manual to unjam, it was much easier, as follows “Remove the cap on the bearing (opposite side from pulley ) and turn shaft using a wrench “. I made a quick video to show how to do this. I’ll send video to you if I can figure out where and how. You can republish if you like or make your own. Thank you, Paul
Thanks for the info. That’s a great method that I would have used if I’d had a wrench at the time. Hard being in the woods with limited resources. However there’s a wrench there now👍
I think I see a small toolbox below the exit chute - same as my DK chipper mine came W/metric wrench set - 19mm (I think) was the one for the black drum nut. I've jammed mine several times chipping old dry pine after a forest masticator. Put the wrench on the black nut and crank it back & forth then fully counterclockwise until free. Just a suggestion
Enjoy your purchase, you never know how much you need a chipper prior to owning one!
The 1st jam is always a disappointment, me included. But with experience you get to understand the type of branches the machine can handle.
Agree 100% I don’t know how I managed before I got it! Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
I just got a DK2 chipper 2 months ago and I agree.
Run the chipper until the chamber is clear before turning off the machine. Thanks for choosing Dk2Power. Happy Chipp'n - Gregg Neuer, President Dk2Power USA.
Thanks! Still loving this chipper!
Hey Gregg!! I just got my DK2 chipper 2 months ago and I do like it. I like how the chipper takes the long pieces of brush and chips them up to sawdust.
Love the video It’s almost a comedy series but you did a great job
Lol. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
Best vlog
Thanks!
Thanks for this...however, I worry for your safety. I'm sure you read, where you can open the side plate (where the grease fitting you identified is), in the manual. I recommend that and it's what I plan to do, when confronted with the same situation. From what I've read, the blades are reversible. I recommend turning them around. Keep up the great work!
Yes I plan on doing that too and rotating the blades in another video coming soon this spring thanks for watching and thanks for commenting.
My DK2 chipper jammed on me and I took a Cordless Saw saw with a long skinny wood blade and cut the wood that was causing the jam.
When Items bounce around, you want to feed in a brushy piece on top and it will typically also suck down the other.
That works👍
yep, best idea i think.
Just stand slightly to the side. Have seen pieces shoot out quite at speed even with the shoot baffle flap.
@@garyblair3033 thanks for the advice, picked one up last night. a dosco 4inch. for a snip.
@@kennethtalbott2233 Hope you saw my comment in main comments.
You will have less trouble knowing chipper head is jammed if yours does not use a centrifugal clutch.
This is one of the reasons I bought the bigger OPC505AE. I has a roller drum that feeds branches in at a set rate. The drum acts as a barrier and things can't shoot back out the chute as easy, but also they can't get pulled in and jam. I was really thinking about a chipper like yours but I decided WTH, why not.
So far seems like Detail K2 is making some good stuff.
the model u bought cost 2000 more
We are really happy with the one we bought so far. To my knowledge that model didn’t exist when we bought ours but it looks like it would have been out of our price range. But it looks like s great machine!
I is certainly a chunk of money more, but for me it has been fantastic. We had 16 trees taken down and it was a much needed upgrade to my little Harbor Freight chipper.
A great upgrade for sure!
The OPC505AE looks like a good unit. But, it costs more than twice as much as the one that Rich is demonstrating. My guess is when you get a feel for this machine, you'll know how much it can handle. At $2,400 extra, you could purchase two of these and have one for backup, vs buying the OPC505AE. We are all obviously different when it comes to our buying choices, so I understand why the OPC505AE would be the preferred choice for many.
Mine has a centrifugal clutch. Which makes it a bit worse. It will start so pull spins in belts (2). Smoke then fire if you don't shut it off quick.
Wish my chip chamber had the clamp latches. Not bolted.
Only takes a twig to jam them.
currently researching the next model up for purchase
We’re still very happy with this👍
Our big ones at the mill even block and jam. 24inch opening.
Thanks for sharing that!
what can you use the left over wood chips for ?
We use them for muddy areas, trails, around our camp, plants, etc. So many things! Very useful.
Looking forward to your next video on how you sharpen the blade.
Definitely coming soon!
I have a DK 506 with a bad jam. Can't move the cutter drum. Suggestions
Answered your email!
Bigger cheater bar worked. Now problem getting bolt of to switch blades. Yours was easy.
@@delbenson So happy to hear that!
somehow i missed this video, i just got mine today and so far i'm not impressed. it struggles with 1" branches, i have to feed them one by one. a 2-3 inch log, forget it, i have to chip an inch at a time or it will bog and almost stall. and having to babysit a log every time i feed it is nuts. the quality of this, the assembly, missing parts, and lack of maintenance is nuts. i had so many quirks that it took me 3 hours of assembly before i turned it over. i took lots of pics and will release a youtube video soon. i've watched several videos on youtube of this machine and they all show to feed right in, not mine. i'll try to adjust the blade but if it doesnt improve i'll return this thing to home depot and rent a real chipper for $350, clean my yard and put the $1700 back in my pocket. it took me an HOUR to chip about 20 branches, mostly 1-inch, stay tuned....
It honestly sounds like something is wrong with yours! We have no problem at all and could chip so much wood in an hour we are exhausted!
@@CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid yeah i'm not happy, there are loose (and stripped) bolts on the belt cover and below it on the drum housing, the drum was shifted to one side and the allen screws fell out, luckily i found them. wouldnt that have been a surprise the next time i started the engine and the drum didnt turn. there's something banging around inside the drum when you turn it manually, the engine already had some oil in it and the tank smelled like gas, there were scratches on the unit and the carton was damaged in shipping. overall i'm not impressed with this, there is no blade adjustment, the wheel bearings are already falling off, i'm going to try to get a refund, this is absurd. I took more photos and videos tonight.
Sounds like it was used and or is a lemon! Would definitely get money back on that one.
Nice 🔔😊👍
Thank you 👍
PULL THE SPARK PLUG WIRE OFF THE SPARK PLUG!!!!!!!! IVE HAD A PIECE OF EQUIPMENT RE START ITS RARE IT DOES HAPPEN BROTHER. FEED HER SLOW.SHE CAN ONLY EAT A LITTLE AT A TIME BROTHER LOL
I will keep that in mind for next time! Thanks :-)
No shit! Great video on how not to do it.
It is better to chop only fresh wood.
It is softer and you have no dust
Agree!
i bet that chipper comes in real handy for you
Sure does. Getting a lot done by just going out for an hour or two each day👍
Hey Rich, do me a favor and pull the plug wire on that puppy before jamming your hand down in there next time? Gonna gimme a heart attack! :-)
The ignition key was turned off but that is definitely a good idea for next time. You can never be too safe! Rich
@@CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid, i forgot about the ignition key on that thing.
the machine has a safety interlock that will not allow it to start with chute open
I’ll have to check that out. I wasn’t aware. Thanks 👍
@@zoggrog8823, some guys defeated that safety mechanism easily years ago down in the pine barrens when they tossed a guy head first down the chute and the thing got jammed temporarily and those clamps busted open. They jimmied the mechanism so it would run and they finished the job and mulched the guy (allegedly is what i heard in the papers back then). Ironically enough, they had the chutzpah to file a lawsuit afterward claiming a defective safety mechanism and from what i hear tru da grapevine it was settled quietly outta court, but nobody can prove nuttin'. ;-) (only joking around as a fiction writer so no worries!
La recomiendas para comprar una igual ?
We are very happy and you see what it does so if that's what you want it for then we recommend it. Price is right in our opinion.
@@CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid muchas gracias y creo que buscaré una que tenga el molino de martillo incluido para usarla en hojas secas que es lo que quiero triturar, gracias
Well that was a bit of a pain lol.
Yup, it is LOL.
I dont see an anvil on your chipper, i think thay why the chipper easily to jam.
I’m not sure what you mean
I see other brand like skarper, it has an anvil installed. The anvil on perpendicular position with the blade, that avoid the un-cut branch slip into under drum/blade. On your machine, after the blade cut branch, the un-cut brach will slip between the drum-blade and lower drum housing and it caused jam.
Interesting. I will definitely look into that. Thanks for the information 👍
Listen, I'm saying this to HELP YOU...you need to be MUCH more careful with a wood chipper. These are not extremely sophisticated machines... its just an engine with a really sharp blade attached to it. I know you had the key turned off, but if this thing would have backfired when you had that 2x4 in the blade channel, you could have been seriously hurt. NEVER EVER tinker with one of these things without DISCONNECTING THE SPARK PLUG. A backfire can start the motor for a couple of revolutions and that's all it takes to cut off your finger. You really need to be more careful, because you're showing people how to clear a jam in a very unsafe manner (IMHO)....
Thanks for the tip. Your right others might think its safe to put their hands in there. The engine was cold and jammed so tight that the chance for a kick with the key turned off was very slim .Believe me I didn't like putting my fingers in there. Probably should have remover the spark plug altogether. Thanks for your kind words and for watching .
Learn not to overgorge, this is called chocking?
Never heard of either one of those. Thanks for watching!
These things are junk. Spend the extra $ and get a better unit from a better manufacturer. Mine blew up after 7 hours of use, the internal cutting wheel came loose and the thing chipped itself. The store I bought it from won't take it back so now I'm hoping that DK2 just sends me a new unit. I'll sell the POS as soon as I get it back.
Sorry to hear that. I guess a ‘lemon’ is a possibility for you. Ours has lasted us many years of use so far.
Not buying that one ,VERMER
I believe it’s spelled Vermeer but those are very expensive and out of reach for the everyday homesteader/ homeowner
