I agree with Tom Moran’s theory. I think if you give them a proper fossorial setup where they can make large burrows, they will tend to retreat to the burrows more than becoming aggressive. It makes sense that if they are in a small webbed up enclosure, they will freak out when the enclosure is opened and the webs are disturbed. It’s like a predator has just dug into the burrow.

I love the OBTs. Ive been keeping Ts for over ten years and the closest I've ever come to getting bit by a tarantula was my first OBT. They are great tarantulas but buyer beware 🤣

@@tedmyers8005 yes and he’s a bit scatterbrained whenever he is showing off his tarantulas. And I imagine most of the spiders react the way they do, because of his fearfulness. Tarantulas are no different than other animals. If you are afraid, then they are afraid.

first expo i went to was another guys first expo. it was in may. we both, coincidentally (or not?) picked up our first t's there. two weeks later was another expo and we're both there. i'm talking to my local breeder and this kid comes up and was like, "hey, i picked this up at that expo two weeks ago. when i fed it it didn't act like *insert forgotten beginner species here(like b. albo or some such)* or even look like, but i'm still super new. can you help me?" my breeder shines his flashlight on it and it's an obt. amazing. simply amazing.
be careful what you get, folks. especially at expos. having watched my breeder prep for an expo i can easily see how that can happen. and watching the final hours of an expo i can also see how that happens when people are trying to quickly trade and such. i don't know why i went from a funny story to this weird rambling. i'm just gonna hit the blue button now.

This is the only Tarantula (so far) that I consider aggressive.
I don’t like calling Tarantulas aggressive as they are defensive and only bite as a means of protecting themselves.
With the majority of OW Tarantulas you can open their enclosure, do maintenance and feed them with very little problems. They will only strike a defense posture if you purposely startle or annoy them.
An OBT will strike a defense posture at anything for no reason and is more likely to inject venom then give a dry bite.

    • @ClickClack_Bam

Is the wet bite part true?
Like they did a study on this & found it bites wet more often than not?
I have a tarantula & have owned one for the past 15 years & owned one for a decade before that & I'm considering getting another one. The OBT has beautiful looks & I'd own it but I'm looking into it's personality & characteristics.
The OBT seems to be a bad choice (esp with the medically significant bite part) when compared to almost everything else but I'm wondering if this is true?

@@ClickClack_Bam You can get an obt as long as you do your research. This species is just a bit more tricky rehouse and manage.
There are lot's of other Tarantulas similar to the obt that don't carry such a reputation. Harpactira pulchripes is a good OW to start with. They're known to be a lot calmer then most other baboons.

@@exoticseightlegsuk Luckily I have never been bitten by one, so i cant speak from personal experience. And while researching for this video...I found no real scientific studies that had data and the potency of their venom. Though reading a lot of bite reports it seems their venom is pretty painful, but no the most potent out there. I beleive I remember it being in the medium to medium high range from peoples descriptions. The other factor though is that this species seems to be more prone to bite multiple times as opposed to just tagging and bolting.

I think your opinion is very valid about it being a bad one for beginners into the creep crawly world , but if you have been dealing with fast moving creepy crawly bugs spiders scorpions and so on and you have a healthy respect for this Tarantula you should be fine . That being said that respect should include having a calm demeanor not being anxious and afraid when dealing with it , and being ready for it to move at you to try and bite in a split second , taking every precaution , having a catch cup , having some sort of thick shirt on to reduce penetration , thick leather gloves even . Its all about doing and taking every precaution that your able to . No one wants to win the lottery and be the one that has a allergic reaction etc . They do teleport / move in a blink of an eye and your sitting there looking at your hand saying ouch . Mine is now 5 inches and was bought as a sling , and it had attitude from birth lol

Yo, I've had/have a wide range of ts including a p regalis, h gigas, and even a few pretty fast whips but this orange hair beautiful is in an a whole other league imo. That spin around, rear up and stomp will make your heart drop yet put stars in your eyes at the same time 🤩 I was really apprehensive before getting one and to be honest I'm glad I waited a few years and experienced what rehousing a wide range of others, especially fast slings was like also what real heart failure feels like 😂 if you can rehouse an OBT (or an H Gigas) you can literally rehouse anything.

I just acquired this species, a P. regalis, and O. violaceopes as my first Old World T's. You cant appreciate the absolute speed of an OBT until you witness it first hand. Mine is a sling and it's a feisty little dude and throws up threat postures already.

I just got one from a good pet store yesterday. I saw it walking around the dixie cup beforehand. Once I got home I poked some holes in the sides for cross ventilation, she walked to the entrance of the hide and sat for a moment before returning, very interesting for a sling to be so bold I thought, but idk, this is my first t.

While I’ve never handled it I adopted one from a buddy and built up a 50 gallon sideways with room for climbing. it rarely shows aggression even whe it’s burrow is disturbed. She just goes deeper. It’s impressive how deep these like monsters can go.
If you like to see your animals this species isn’t for you. She stays hidden 99% of the time.

These are rare to find, where I live.
    Unfortunate series of events...
I found one! After years of looking. A really small sling, the size of my pinkie tip.
    My a/c goes out.
    Summer is hot.
It grew so fast, while it was warm. I'm only a few months in and looking at... Next molt is juvenile.
