I really enjoyed the information and your presentation. I'm 72 and just got my first 4 chickens. I worked today to make a dust bath for the girls. Your video was very timely. Thanks again
I am with you. DE is not the powder to be using today because it is messing with nano crap inside the body that is being spilled all over into our environment. Maybe a long time ago, but not today. The more nano (smart dust) inside the body, the worse the reaction. Sticking with lime for inside barn. Thanks for the video!
I knew you were pretending when I saw your pants! 😄 Just kidding. I've used Diatomaceous earth for years. After seeing this well put together and informative video I now need some Lime! Very well done.
I use the DE food grade for my chickens and have found it does an great job with everything . And yes even cutting down on smell, but then I like to keep my coop and yard clean. And I don’t have any flies sense I started using it on a regular basis. It also is good for getting rid of worms as well. I also use it with sweet PDZ sand . I use that under the roost and clean it out every morning with a kitty scooper.
Sulfur powder too is good. The old time farmers used to let a cloth bag full of sulfur hang in the door that their chickens walked through so they run against it and get sulfur on themselves. They also limewashed the coop inside and out to keep mites away
1. can DE and Lime be used interchangeably? say, DE to refill after a period where Lime was used in the dust bath. 2. how often does the Lime/DE need to be replenished (how long before they lose their effectiveness)? Thanks
Where can I get the Greer barn lime? Or will any non hydrated barn lime work? We want to use in our yard for ants, fleas and other bugs along with using in our coop and runs
@@meaghansage5182 you certainly could but I’d say you’re making it way harder on yourself than it needs to be. Give them a good dust bath with the lime mixed in and I’ll guarantee they take care of business on their own
The kind I get is all very powdery. It’s like flour almost. I do know that lime can be found in the form of pellets, but I don’t think that would be as good for a poultry application.
All the better!!! I actually keep a little bit of diatomaceous earth for when my chickens need to have it applied directly to their feathers. For just about everything else, though, I’ve found lime to be equally effective and MUCH MUCH cheaper!
I do wear a mask. You wouldn’t want to breath in much lime or DE. Both can cause respiratory irritation. Typically I’m using it outside and the wind is blowing so it just kinda carries it away from me.
Not generally. I personally feed them pumpkins and/or hot peppers for that. I’ve never actually gave my chickens dewormer. You’ve inspired me to do a video on it!
It definitely composts but I don’t think you’ll have to even give it any thought. When used out in the run, the first hard rain you get will make it vanish. As far as in the coop, you end up scooping it out along with the litter. Just make sure you don’t use this if you’re doing deep litter. It will ruin the fermentation by killing off all the good bacteria that you want for that process. As far as where you get it, any place that sells chicken feed should have lime.
I was using DE $27 for a 25lb bag, but as of today I bought the lime. Your video just confirmed my decision.
Let me know how you like!
I have always used it as a laundry booster and the towels come out super smooth and clean.
That’s a new one. Take that Downy! 😂

That’s great to hear! Best of luck!
Diatomaceous earth is in the home depot near the pool supplies. If u wanna use it.
I am ready to try the lime since I know D.E
@@keya31gville I didn’t realize Home Depot carried that. Good to know! Lime is cheaper 😉
Be careful. You want FOOD grade DE. I don't think the pool kind is food grade.
I will probably be using both.
I know I do! Lime is getting more expensive 😭
Love "pretend" farmer!! Thank you for the infovid!
Thanks for checking it out! I’m glad it helped!

Thank you! As for my clothing, it’s just a little too warm to wear the Carhart bibs right now 🤣
@@pretendfarm yes sir its been crazy her in the south.
You can use de with deep litter. You cant do that with lime. Inused both in different ways
I've only used barnlime, but was considering using diatomaceous earth. Thank you for this informative video

Gonna try Barn Lime for my chicken run
It’s never let me down!

Great info, thank you 👍👍
Buy at local feed store. Not the big box

@@lindalyc I’d replenish bi-weekly. They both work great for dust bathing!
What about dolomite lime?
i wish those were the prices in australia. 1 kg DE is $24
That’s horrible!
I am grateful for the least costly mite control 👍🏽☀️
Lime
Where can I get the Greer barn lime? Or will any non hydrated barn lime work? We want to use in our yard for ants, fleas and other bugs along with using in our coop and runs
You can use any. Greer is just the name of the company. It should work great for that!
so can I dust the First Saturdays Lime directly to my chickens?
@@meaghansage5182 you certainly could but I’d say you’re making it way harder on yourself than it needs to be. Give them a good dust bath with the lime mixed in and I’ll guarantee they take care of business on their own
Where can I find the Greer lime? Or which other brand do you recommend?
@@SA-lv4sv brand makes no difference. Just make sure you don’t get hydrated lime!!!
I think garden lime is cheapest atleast in Sweden
Is soil doctor pulverized garden lime safe for the chickens or does it have to be barn lime?
I’ve honestly never heard of it. I personally don’t like to experiment outside of what I know is safe. Sorry I’m not much help there.
Thanks for the info. Is barn lime dusty or granulated?

I use PDZ with my deep litter. The PDZ helps absorb ammonia and is supposed to help with the decomposition.
@@laattardo you’re the second person to recommend that. I’m definitely going to have to try this now! Thanks for the input!
U can get barn lime at any Blaine’s or tractor supply etc. super cheap. 3$ for 50 lbs. instead of 17$ for like 10 lbs.
Thanks for a great video! What is the difference between barn lime and First Saturday Lime?
so you can use lime in a dust bath? Im looking to use it for my quail and hens separate areas
Sure! Lime is totally harmless as long as you don’t use the wrong kind of lime.
