Love this ship. You literally can have about (10) Saber-Classes, (10) Defiant classes, (2) intrepid classes , and (2) Akira classes and that would be one badass and effective assault fleet in the Dominion War
I'd replace the Intrepid with the Steamrunner, Intrepid is more of a multirole/exploration ship, designed to survive long term. Steamrunner is more of a warship.
@@Anton3055 That is why I kept them. The multi-role/exploration (scanners/sensors) to coordinate with the Sabers suite to give that multi-data/multi-sensor tracking and targeting, but also fast and agile (which is why I would not use a Nebula class) I relegated the Akira to the torpedo gunboat/carrier warship (tank) role. I think this would be way more effective (build time, personnel, firepower, resources, etc.) than say (3) Galaxy class.
I always thought these straight up warships should have regularly been assigned to various starbases/outposts, much as the Defiant was assigned to DS9. The idea being they weren’t always needed, and when needed they would be mainly staffed by the base’s/outpost’s crew, although each would have a small full time crew to keep the vessels combat ready. Theship class assigned being based of outpost/starbase size, with smallish outposts having a defiant class assigned, with larger outposts/bases being assigned larger and possibly even multiple ships
Yeah, they seem to be the modern replacement to the Miranda-class, small and fast destroyers meant to bulk up larger fleets, or form wolfpacks on their own.
In Beta Canon the most notable saber class is the USS da Vinci, NCC-81623. Its a Starfleet Corps of Engineers ship captained by David Gold and later by Sonya Gomez.
The Saber classes are definitely an interesting design. By the way for R2 appearing in a Star Trek film it would be Star Trek Into Darkness and when the Vengeance catches up with the Enterprise while at warp and fires on it. When it creates its first hull breach that's when you see R2 flying out. Of course you can miss it if you blink literally.
Been reading the Starfleet Corps of Engineers books lately. Love the Saber-class da Vinci in those books. Nice to see a master systems display for the class in this video.\
Excellent video, helped me to decide to get a Saber in STO. The only issue I have with STO, if anyone cares lmao, y’all don’t got enough to worry about now some stranger in the town square is like, “everyone, excuse me everyone, listen to me” lmao, apologies readers lol I just noticed this though, lol. I wish they did weapon systems in STO like they are in canon. So the Saber has four type 10 phaser strips and two torpedo bays, 6 weapon systems but in STO the Saber has 4 weapon slots. I know with some of the larger ships, Scimitar immediately comes too mind, it would be difficult but the Defiant in STO has 6 slots but in canon isn’t she super overpowered? I don’t know, I love this game, took me forever to get into it but I love it, I just wish they did the weapons a lil different.
I purchased Star Trek Strange New Worlds because of your reviews. It is on DVD and I truly enjoyed Season One. It seems to me the best of all Star Treks.
Didn't the Saber class have the option of a long range *phaser lance* installed above the front shuttle bay? The in universe explanation is the Federation council thought it was too warlike so Starfleet engineers removed it on most of the main production run but left the hardware intact to have it quickly retrofitted.
Wolf 369 lasted 11 minutes ( battle) the battle in first contact. Was more than 3 hours. And started in the typhoon system with sector 001 as the fall back position. .
I believe the first wave of ships were older classes IE Miranda, Galaxy , Excelsior class etc a tactic designed to confuse the Borg. The second wave of ships were the newer more advanced anti Borg starships, mixed with older classes
There was a game in the 90's focused around the Dominion War and you could weidl a Lcar construction supplemental program with that 3d visual space sim combat game to design and construct ships for use the Sabre, Defient, Steamrunner, Galaxy, Reliant, and B'rel ship classes were default to craft you one ship of from the get go.
Same design flaw as all federation star ships: exposed bridge where all acting offifers are present in case of emergency. Nevertheless in ST no enemy uses this flaw for their advantage. Bless the authers of ST.
@@casbot71 I get the original “necked” ships. Roddenbury wanted them to be completely distinct. Problem is I like visible practicality in a ship design. Say what you like of ISDs but the flying wedge is practical as hell for a purpose built war ship. The compact blended designs the “anti-borg” ships have just make more sense.
Please make the SteamRunner class breakdown. Honestly my favorite class of ship. One of many unique designs. The nacelles being integrated into the hull gives it such an intimidating stance.
To bad they don't equip the star trek universe starships with an upgraded version of the armor tech used on star trek voyager? Something like subspace nutroneum ablative armor, where the energy impacts, dissipate into subspace.
As a vessel made for a similar purpose but of a larger construction as the Defiant class, one would assume that the Saber class would have some kind of increased increased capacity in relation to the Defiant class. This could be in the overall amount of weapons, having better crew and storage facilities (for better range) or defensive systems for increased durability. It doesn't seam to have the missile type focus of the Steamrunner class or the 'build it small, and deadly with the maximum firepower and small crew' emphasis of the Defiant class. Instead it seems to be by far lighter armed (4 phaser emitters and 2 photon torpedo launchers) than the Defiant (4 phaser cannons, 3 phaser emitters and 6 torpedo launchers). In fact the only extra capabilities I can see in the Saber class over the Defiant class is that the Saber carries two shuttle craft (only 1 on the Defiant class). With a larger size making it easier to target than a Defiant and both ships having the same crew compliment I can't see any reason why Starfleet would build a Saber class over a Defiant class other than cost. I could see that with its dense design it would probably take longer to construct a Defiant class than a Saber class as well as fitting all those weapon systems has to be resource intensive. This means (at least as far as I can tell) the Saber has to be a 'budget version' of the Defiant class that is probably more easily put into mass production in order to make any sense at all.
If the Defiant is a pissed-off tough little ship, the Saber is the slightly larger, beefier ship that wants to ruin your day. Besides being Borg-busters, I think the Sabers and Defiants are Starfleet's equivalents to the BOPs of the Klingon and Romulan Empires.
The Sovereign class, a.k.a. 'Daddy's home!' We need to make an over armed battlecruiser that would make even the most battle mad Klingon take one look and say, 'hold on a minute!' Norway, Steamroller, Sabre, Defiant, Akira and Intrepid; in case Daddy wants to share!

"It's the ship that made the Borg run in less than 2e-13 parsecs." "what?" "like 6 kilometers or something. When you're dealing with the Borg that's pretty damn close. Now, how much is this worth to you?"
Not sure if I like Saber. If I were to choose to battle the borg, I'd still pick defiant. Its smaller and easier to build, pack or damage, and more maneuverable.
There's no way it's easier to build. It has a cloaking device and it's hull structure barely handles the weapons load (per dialogue in the show). The Sabre makes more sense by having a slightly less impressive load but a larger hull mass, allowing for a less overly compact and thus, complex construction. I build aircraft in real life. Combat aircraft. Smaller + more complex and stealth equals 2x more difficult than legacy platforms.
Too bad we couldn't rip the LCARS Utopia Planetia FLASH website when this was initially introduced in the late 90s. It survived&was mass produced.
Nice, but it is still too long. I think that I will go for a pair of refitted Magee class light escorts and do the 369 weave on the coils myself.
