- As governments around the world strive to reduce smoking rates, Sweden has become a controversial case study in how best to do so. As of 2022, only 5.6% of the population still smoked. That’s the lowest percentage in Europe. Many give credit to snus, small nicotine-filled pouches placed under the lip. Snus makers say they’re safer than cigarettes. But policymakers and health advocates are divided over their use.

The point of the debate is this:
In a perfect world no one would ever use substances that are addictive. But we do not live in a perfect world.
For some reason, humans love the kick of nicotine. So why not give people the least harmful way of consuming it?
If cigarettes would be erased, and snus took its place, it would literally save MILLIONS of lives every year.

Snus is different from chewing tobacco and the like. Some studies say that snus increases the probability of some lymph cancers but the evidence is not conclusive enough so they can't for example write on snus containers, (altough they did for a while and then reversed it), that it causes cancer/death. So instead containers only say that it's addictive. It does do real damage on the gums though depending on genetics and how much you use it, and health complications stemming from nicotine will still apply.

In India, we call this 'Khaini'. It is predominant here especially common within rural and labour class people.
Khaini is chewing tobacco so it differs from snus.

Snus causes less cancer but you can contantly have it under your lip thruout the entire day, causing an even more intense nicotine addiction. Also there's acid in the pouches that dissolve part of the inside of your mouth so the nicotine can get into your blood stream faster. The acid is (suprisungly) not good for your teeth. I'm swedish and when I was 16 three years ago pretty much all of my classmates were using tocacco free snus (it was legal for ages 16 and up). A few years later a lot of them couldn't even go a week without it and if they succeded they celebrated with more snus. They even got part time jobs to fund their habits. Still better than cigarettes I guess

Yeah, it’s bad enough when people feel the need to tell others who are addicted to dangerous substances things that they obviously already know, but the amount of people who fear monger about using snus, vapes, etc. as a harm reduction alternative to smoking is a whole other level of ignorance imo. It’s like if you went to the local needle exchange to tell all the opioid addicts “y’know that stuff can kill you, right?”, like, would you rather they die from untreated needle-borne diseases like hep-c or overdosing because they didn’t have any Narcan, instead of taking steps that might help them live long enough to actually get treatment? False. Snus used to have labels on the cans that said that it may cause cancer, but it had to be removed because there's no proof of that claim. Now the warning label says that snus includes nicotine and is highly addictive, which is true.

Same here. I switched six months ago, after smoking for 30 years (since my early teens). It's not ideal, but I bet the risks with snus are magnitudes lower. Also, waaay cheaper! Especially if you get the "DIY snus" bags.

Stop smoking and move over to snus, which is far healthier in pretty much every way. Snus shouldn't be consumed by people who aren't addicted to nicotine, but the ones that already are should move over.

I use juicehead pouches. It's synthetic nicotine. I love the blueberry lemonade mint.. I haven't smoked or vaped in about 5 years. I get 20 pouches for $1.99 at the store I go to.. I was spending $20 a week on vape stuff and cigarettes at some point so this is a cheap alternative and it does the job and I guess it's a lot safer maybe..better than vaping and smoking for sure... Definitely a reduced risk product.
I've smoked, cigarettes, cigars, and pipes. I never had an issue putting either down. But the snus is way more potent and addictive. You get a higher head rush, and better ability to focus than smoking too. And you don't smell like a chimney everywhere you go so there's that. It's like a few cups of coffee in the morning, is the best way to explain it. But I still worry about the long-term risk of cancer. If you don't have to do it, don't.
i have been snussing for a long time. it genuinely helps me with stress, anxiety but I wouldn't wish this addiction upon anyone.

Why do governments think of banning something like pouches? Even banning vaping altogether is a bad idea, but at least the potential for more unrecognized risks is higher. Nicotine pouches are more similar to things like patches and gum, which, as far as I know nobody's thinking of trying to ban, although restrictions wouldn't surprise me.

In India we call it khaini, we too have that since 100s of years, these days we stopped khaini but there is a much bigger addictive version called gutka which is a mix of beetle nuts flavour powder and nicotine but there is a big spitting problem because of this, I'm a gutka user and it eases me off soo much it relaxes to a great range and I'm addicted to it now.......

People getting addicted to snus and getting horrific mouth cancers is not a positive thing
snus and nicotine pouches are for adult nicotine users only. Snus does not increase the risk for oral cancer. This was concluded in a Karolinska Institute study following 418 000 Swedish men during 30 years (9,2 million life years). The study concluded that normal snus use ie 4 cans/boxes per week reduced the realtive risk of oral cancer with 35% as compared to never-snus-users.
There is no evidence that Snus is causing mouth cancer.
Such a narrow-minded thought. I've been using for 15+ years and my mouth and teeth are in perfect condition, no signs of any diseases, gum problems etc. I'm glad I quit smoking thanks to pouches. Show me proof that nicotine pouches cause mouth cancers. I've only seen research papers that have not confirmed any of your claims.

As someone who actively tries to quit nicotine pouches, these things are arguably worse than cigarettes. Sure they are less harmful to your body, but the nicotine content is very high, and the fact that you can take them anywhere and keep them in your mouth for so long, you basically have nicotine coursing through your body 24/7, and at some point you get so addicted that you just feel completely exhausted all the time, like the constant nonstop nicotine buzz made me extremely lazy and tired. When I started quitting, the withdrawals were so bad I felt like I wanted to claw my eyes out, I got cold sweats, I constantly felt like I just ran a marathon, my head was spinning all the time, I was less aware of my surroundings, and I snapped at everyone and everything for the dumbest reasons and the only thing on my mind was nicotine for a week straight, it was the worst feeling I've ever had. I even told about my experience to a friend who used to take heroin when he was around my age "I'm 23, and he's 35", and he told me that what I'm telling him are milder symptoms of what he had when he was quitting heroin.
So sure, snus and nicotine pouches are a less harmful alternative to smoking, but goddamn the addiction is just so much worse.
Exactly, i was snusing for 3 years. Something about 15 pieces of strong bags per day. I stopped week ago and the physical addiction was so crazy. Two days of cold sweat, depression, derealisation. All this because the high level of nicotine contained in snus.

Bonk6244 I'm with you on this one. As I lye in my bed with a white fox snus in looking for a way out. Just done third time cold turkey and cravings were awful today I couldn't think. Did well last time until I go out drinking. I enjoy the pouches. However I never smoked just occasional cigars once a week with a beer. A year ago the cigar company sent me a free sample of pouches and I was hooked. Gone up to 17mg nearly every two hours but then noticed my stomach not well, no energy, sleeping less and my dependancy on them. Hair falling out and hives on dry skin and body tremors are severe. Just want to go back to cigars on a Saturday without daily addiction. These are like sweets. They do help my condition I have tourettes syndrome so am looking for a healthy alternative. My research is the amount of salts in the tobacco free ones like zyn, Velo are harsh and have detergent in them for a quick nicotine delivery but short lived buzz. I've gone down to just one or two a day but they always creep up. Stay focused long term we can beat this 🙏
Ps I've tried caffeine pouches and they are good. I ordered some from a guy on UA-cam his company Outlaw Dip does a great brand and nic safe pouches which are nicotine free caffeine free but do give you a buzz and relaxing feeling. Not cheap especially I live in UK had to pay export fees but worth it. I use both caffeine pouches and nic safe winer green is nice throughout the day. It may helps.
I hope every countries worldwide learn from Sweden on how they successfully reduce smoking rate without relying on regressive excise taxes that does little to reduce smoking rate.
15% used snus? Im not sure if its a class issue but almost everyone i know uses snus, including myself. I quit smoking about 7 years ago and started using snus instead. The addiction is very strong, periods when i stopped using snus i couldnt sleep and was constantly cold-sweatting. Way better than smoking tho, i can run and crosscountry ski and my cardio is good even tho im a tobacco abuser. Snus should be used as a way to quit smoking, the benefits of using snus are not outweighting the downsides most of the time. Its also an economic question, i spend about 1000kr/month or 100ish euro/month on snus wich is not to high, i know people that spend 2-4 times that per month.

@@lmao2351 No way 65 percent uses snus. I think 15 percent sounds pretty accurate. Only a few of the people I know use it. According to Folkhälsomyndigheten, 20 percent of men and 7 percent of women use it. I think it varies depending on region and class. Rural and working class people probably use more than academics and big city dwellers.

I bought some. I tried the lowest dose and all it does is burn my gums and mouth. Not for me. I was surprised how strong they are as I'm a heavy smoker. I just think the burn is uncomfortable.

Well to be fair, when you don't regulate what people consume, they don't exactually self regulate and it usually gets to the point where it starts affecting others not just the consumer
smoking affect not only the user but people around them, when people smoke indoors for years furniture, carpets, fabric, walls gets damaged and has to be trashed.

While it's not accurate to say that no one smokes in Sweden, generally smoking is less common, and you spend money on both smoking and other expenses.

I found out about snus about 16 years ago and used it to quit smoking cigarettes. I was able to make the transition in one day with no issues whatsoever. Haven't smoked a single cigarette since that day. Of course, I have been addicted to snus ever since, and use it every day. My dentist has never been a fan of my snus usage, but admits that it doesn't seem to be causing any dental issues.

@@kyu6938 originally I was very excited about not smoking, but I started to develop a cough of fluid with the vapes, eventually this was simulating pneumonia and I had coughing fits which caused me to black out and become unconscious because it hit a nerve in my neck.

High, high taxes on cigarettes. Going the same way in Canada. Unless you buy on the reserve or something, being a smoker is getting to be very expensive here. As a former smoker I wasn't happy, but maybe it's the right approach. It's certainly provided me with extra incentive to finally quit the cancer sticks.

We dont have very high taxes on cigarettes in Sweden. A 20 pack costs around 60-80SEK (~6-8euro) which is pretty average. France and UK stick out with way higher cigarette taxes.

Ive been snussing for a bit while now, probably cause my grandad snus (lös) and my dad tho. Helps with stress, gives you a lot of energy at some point and its cheap and doesnt bother anyone around you, thats the best thing of snus, anywhere anytime.
