- It’s ALIVE!!!!! For the very first time, the Falcon Heavy has successfully lit all 27 of its mighty Merlin engines in preparation for its maiden launch. Once it flies, the Falcon Heavy will be the most powerful rocket currently in operation.
SpaceX does a hold down test of all their rockets called a static fire and today we’re going to give you a quick rundown on what that is, how it works, and why they do it.
Thanks for the excellent Falcon Heavy Static fire footage from the following people -

Fingers crossed everything goes well!
Come on... an explosion will be cooler.
+ Pad damage
Hannes Fingers and toes and any other superstitious methods of securing good luck are highly welcomed. Lol
How exciting would it be if the second stage in the first Falcon Heavy launch did a soft landing at a secret landing zone in Africa?
It did.
Hannes here from the future and it did
Great news Tim: your tweet about this vid was featured in the Google News Feed! Congrats!
"I can't wait"... So say we all!
So say we all!
can you guys imagine If they can land both side boosters and the core boosters? OMG...
So say we all!
Denis Muto pretty sure thats the plan?
It is, but I think the odds are againts space X because this is the first falcon heavy, I found it like a dream If the manage to do all the objectives (I hope they does don't get me wrong)
Of all the UA-cam hype/fluff channels, this channel delivers real knowledge. Amazing content. Thank you!
Keep up the great work Tim. I've shown everyone I know your channel, and they both love it.. Keep adding more technical detail as we enjoy understanding the more complex parts of space prep and flight. Never dumb it down... Thanks.
Stuart Perry so you know two people?
Basel Kader No fair saying what I was going to say before I've said it!
very informative and quick turnaround from today's event
oh jeez! Now i'm thinking about being an astronaut on the moon with a misfiring engine beneath my vehicle! I never knew this about those engines! Thanks for the education.
FINALLY! We've been waiting long enough to see this thing get into the air. At least we're finally getting close.
Loving your content dude! On the ball with everything going on at SpaceX.. This is the first place I check for news relating to them!
Such a great job of sharing knowledge! Thanks and keep up the great work!
I always enjoy your enthusiastic presentations. Thank You
Excited for the launch! is hardly close to describing how I feel about the pending Maiden Voyage of the Falcon Sportster and subsequent triple landings!!
Very good presentation style for this type of material with the general public as audience.
Tim, you are amazing, sir. The quality of your productions are staggering. Man, I am so impressed. Bravo, young fella, Bravo!
5:16 I never knew that. Thanks for bringing that up.
Awesome ... sooo stoked for this to finally happen.
I just have missed notifications about the static fire. So cool! Glad it went well.
Love that you plugged fellow youtuber Scott Manley. Subbed
Excellent job! Thanks for the in-depth explanation.
Happened to wonder if you were filming some of those early shots, and glanced up and saw K. Scott Piel. He happens to be the author of one of the best and most intricate add-on modifications for World of Warcraft I have ever seen, and had a loyal fan base himself, and just last year ended maintenance of that application. I was disheartened, because without him it hasn't been updated to keep up with game updates, and playing the game without is like living in this day and age without a cellphone. I'm glad to see what he's moved on to. Amazing coincidence.
You're an Inspiration. Thank you for all the great contents!!!
I know this video is old, but it is nice to see spacesuit again... I like it...
I would of thought you would of been trending before. All your videos are so amazing. I hope i can create as interesting videos as you in the future.
You've really got me into space and rockets and I've got a bit obsessed so cheers mate
It’s ALIVE!!!!! Another splendid production! ♥
Hey Tim. Love your video's man! I watched a few of them already but now you got me subscribed!
I definitly plan on watching your live stream when falcon heavy will launch, at least when its possible for me at launch time for their is ofcourse a big time difference here in Europe. Anyway i like what you doing! Keep up the good work!
I'm so happy to be subbed to this channel. Tim, I look forward to shaking your hand some day!
I had a dream it exploded, I woke up scared
Piran me too
Piran Well everything has gone ok,so you can sleep in peace tonight.
That's a nightmare
Funny, I had a dream where it succeeded and Elon invited me to his party. lol
shut up!
I'm so glad I found your channel! you seem like such a nice guy and amazing content really! keep it up! I can't wait for the falcon heavy test launch! as Elon said it is most likely to fail but it will be amazing just to hear those 27 engines at full power!
Thank you for producing videos like these. You're a champion of education.
Great vid as usual. You are actually getting quite good.
I'm going to do just about everything in my power to get there to watch live. Great video as always!
Brilliant video and a very cheerful producer/presenter
Nice job really enjoyed it, thanks.
The first video I watch from you. Liked it! Excellent job.
Hey finally , at last you made a video about the Falcon Heavy test, I´v been waiting :)
Has been overwhelmed by this "Sky news" thats not the best of things, and talks about almost the same thing all the time with the same pictures and no feeling..?
Awesome work you are doing!
Man these videos are realllly good like top 0,1 percent UA-cam or sth! Good job!
Very informative, great video!
Great channel, keep up the good work!
Just curious: did you have at least half of this video prepared before the static fire happened? This was just too quick.
I had about 85% of it done before hand! Just fixed a few things, added new video clips, and then exported! I try to be as quick and efficient as possible :)
Everyday Astronaut
Just like SpaceX!
Considering the static fire has been delayed for weeks, there was plenty of time to prepare.
You were! Thanks for the great videos
great video EA. the suit is a bit geeky, but secretly I wish I had one too. keep up the good work !
I love spacex's format hope all goes well for the launch
Really interesting video AGAIN!
I love how you can see the sound waves traveling through the smoke cloud.
I really can't wait, I've never been so exited about rockets than ever before.
What a great birthday present this will be for me!
My Birthday is Feb. 2nd
and the launch is in about a week so yes... Perfect timing for the SpaceX launch to happen
Great info. Thanks!
All I want to know is when it will launch, so I can skip school to watch it.
it's due for the 4th or 5th, but it might change
Go one day before and sleep on the woods if you want to get a better view.
6th
I know an English teacher who is going to stop her class and have everyone watch the launch when it happens.
I had a mindgasm.
Are you going to cover the new engine design of the Electron engine from Rocket lab at some time?
I sure am! That's the next video up!
Yes that is being scripted as we speak.
awesome Thanks!
Subbed, because your channel have subtitles. It's important for people whos mother language is not english like me, because difficult-space-ish-jargon. Keep up the goodwork!
Thanks for clearing up the staggered information. I actually commented on another video and said that it appears more like 3 engines per booster every 250 milliseconds or so. Then full test throttle for about 4 seconds and then a stagger down. It was clearly only about a 5 second fire test. Sure the steam cloud was there for a much longer period but the actual evidence of thrust was not, not to my eyes and ears. I turned up the speakers as loud as I could too. Lol, I would love to be able to attend the launch. I have not been this excited since visiting in person a live shuttle landing and transportation on top of a 747. But I missed all of the launches, except for on TV of course.
Haha, I first did my time test using the old "one one-thousand, two one-thousand, three one-thousand" etc etc. Next time I need to use a real timer, lmao. I actually timed only the firing sound, not the visual evidence. But your video seems to suggest I am wrong on the timing. Even after looking at it again on a 4K TV, it still only looks like 5 seconds to me. Now I think the video I was first watching, from SciNews was in fact sped up. Damn it... lol
Great explanation, thanks :)
My first watch of your videos. Will not be the last!
This was great. One of your most enjoyable videos! I'll be down at the Cape for demo, too! (I live in Savannah, Georgia, so I could still see it from the beach if I wanted to, but heck no, I'm going down there XD)
finally you got me! great video!
such power, much smoke, so excite, wow
This would be perfect if your profile pic was doge.
like little volcano!
Actually it's fog.
Pretty sure it's not dickwad. Looks more like smoke or steam.
It's an easy mistake to make, thinking its smoke dude. No need to call him a dickwad.
"I never want to hold again."
~commentator of Electron Still Testing launch
I've never related to anyone more.
Nice video, Tim!
Elon Musk: "In a week or so"... right... Elon Musk time to normal means probably end of February
Me February 2019 ...
B.L. Alley
If NASA hadn't built the deathtrap shuttle they wouldn't have killed 14.
B.L. Alley Boy are you stupid.
J Shephard Don't be stupid.
B.L. Alley Your second comment provides a different context to your first. I agree with you. My apologies.
Love the vids keep it up see you at the cape
Great job!
Just saw a report on CBS Morning News of the Falcon Heavy test and some details. Glad to see the larger media folks getting on board with “SpaceX, The Greatest Show on and off Earth”.
coolness. More information about engine fire will be cool.
Very nice quality video
Finally ! This is BADASS!!!!
You are awesome Tim
I live on space coast and we are excited to see it launch!! YES!!
Great footage!
As fortune would have it, I was there for the F9H static test firing. Alas, I didn’t get a heads-up, so I was in the Saturn V building at the time, so I didn’t get to SEE it... but I definitely HEARD it! 🚀
Finally! I have Feb 1st to Feb 13th booked off of work. Hoping it fires during that time!
Years ago, I heard a single-engine test fire of the shuttle. One single engine. It was so loud it rattled windows miles away. Ever since then, I've been fascinated with rockets.
good work
*amazing*
You can get a sense of the immense power even with just this short static test.
You didn't waste much time! Way to get this video out super quick. Was most of it pre-recorded?
this channel is really cool
Did not know about the lunar motor never being tested. I'm sure they tested them on the earth but that specific one that went to the moon was never tested! That's crazy and awesome.
Oh the excitement is real!!
I live in waco and McGregor is about 15 miles away. Every time they test an engine the windows rumble and can even feel it sometimes!
The awesome power! Can't wait.
I am excited as the first landing!
i cant wait either! 👍🏼
Yes! Flying from Seattle to see it! Just waiting on a firm date and adding 2 extra days just in case
Now that static fire is done there is likely higher confidence in the dates. Before it was dependent on that going well. I would wait until there is firm launch date and book the trip as late as possible it's almost sure there will be at least some more delays and maybe one scrub.
I’ll be there. I’m about an hour away from Kennedy space center and I’ve been busy lately so I didn’t even realize they were testing already.
The side boosters are reused? Man this is going to be... Perfection.
Hey T, thanks for the explanation. Btw, I like your background music and was wondering, what software do you use to "materialize" it? (I mean getting it out of your mind and into the phisical world)
Dang son, that was a quick upload
Driving to Florida from Ohio for the Launch. 16 Hours 1 way, but it will be worth it!!!!
I feel you!!! 21 hours for me here in Iowa! Worth it!
Just hoping its before the 12th.... Thats when midterm season starts. Im already going to miss a quiz and a lab if it is the 6th as rumored
I didn't realize you are in Iowa. I'm from Iowa City/Cedar Rapids area.
Love it!
4:41 damn, the Falcon Heavy looks majestic af.
So exited
who else is booking launch day off?
the side cores have already been used?! i just assumed they would use brand new falcon-9's. omfg i love the falcon heavy even more
Fascinating. I'd not yet read that they had static fired the Heavy. I've often thought about the Lunar Module only having one bite of the apple in it so to speak. My understanding at the time was that this was a hydrazine based engine, much like a ramped up version of the various thrusters used on the space capsule and the space stations. Those have certainly seemed to be very reliable. Any thoughts, information.
Thanks Tim
My goodness. The launch is in less than a week, my commemorative t-shirt arrived, and Everyday Astronaut's got plans for the launch livestream. It's HAPPENING, EVERYONE!
Good one
I just got to town from Alaska and missed it. Hope FH is still on the pad in the morning.
Why that static test wasn´t in "spaceX Now" app? :(
I am really looking forward to this event, i hope you will stream it
can you make a video for those of us that want to attend the FH launch in person. (it will be my first live launch) on how to prepare for a launch, where is the best spot to view/how to sign up/with who do we sign up, what type of gear is needed (binoculars?), hotel/food recommendations maybe? etc. thanks!!!
Nice SpaceX rocket models.
