  • Block 5. The elusive final iteration of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket is finally almost here. Although we’ve known quite a bit about what’s going to be new with Block 5, the general public has had a very hard time understanding what, when, why, how, huh’s when it comes to block changes.
Well today, we’re going to try and untangle the confusion of block changes, revealing the history of the Falcon 9 and how its evolved into the fully and rapidly reusable rocket we hope to see with this new ultimate Block 5 Falcon 9.
We’re also going to do a side by side comparison of all versions of the Falcon 9 including Block 5 to show you just how much is changing before SpaceX commits to freezing the Falcon 9 so astronauts can finally ride on top.
And lastly we’re going to explain why SpaceX has been throwing away some of their older Falcon 9’s before they get into this new Block 5 booster.

People can be frustratingly cynical, sarcastic & pessimistic. Instead of giving SpaceX thumbs up for trying, they laugh at the idea. That's really _not_ the right attitude for an industry that *requires* out of the box, unorthodox thinking in order to bring the costs down. Now we already have 20 something landings behind us. 2 of those side by side... Let's try not to use the word "impossible" that quickly.
Also, nice to see a return of the black interstage on block 5, takes me back to the Falcon 1 days.

    • @mikeober9773

Most of that laughing came from ULA executives, who went so far as to tell Congress that you couldn't land a rocket.

That is unfortunately human nature, which requires hard work to ween out. Same thing applies to all big problems of world: capitalism, climate change, you name.
It is insane to think one man would have to take all blame and pressure for solving these kind of insanely hard and complex problems, when people bully other people for insignificant things in social media. There hundreds of billionaires who chose to be "puppet master", not sharing any info. Elon Musk is brave just to be open about many things like accidents, mistakes he did and so on. But he has learned quickly also. Same is true of Tesla and many things in business.

I wonder if Block 5 Boosters will get individual names. You know, akin to ships and some planes and trains. Would make it a lot easier to keep track off which Booster does and did which mission.

Personally, the all-white does have a nice feel to it, it looks so different than anything we've seen before, especially since it's such a tall and thin rocket, but I like the touches of black, it's a callback to the early days of the space age and it simply looks cool.

some recognizable features and paint schemes would be nice too. something like a blue band near the top, or the lower third painted red, some patterns maybe, like a repeating tiling. colour matching legs could also help with the cool factor.
the silhouette of a 2nd stage (and specific the fairing used) being painted on for every successful mission like old ww2 bombers counting sorties could also be cool. like "these are the things i delivered.".

As someone who worked for a company that sold a similar number (low hundreds) of individual, cutting-edge, custom, multi-million dollar devices, it's likely that the naming scheme is not consistent even in-house. Each machine of ours sold was a known quantity, but typically could have any of half-a-dozen or more custom features, even as some cost-plus features became standard, and old standard features became obsolete. Like SpaceX, there was a certain amount of jockeying for delivery positions, and newer serial numbers not rarely had older features and vice-versa. There were 'blocks' of various sorts, some involving visible changes, that made them distinguishable to experts, but also many internal options that were not visible or readily discerned.
Since these devices were not expended, it also happened that they were occasionally upgraded after delivery. Sometimes by the customer (breaking their contract).
As the numbers we delivered grew, with a few exceptions the configurables became increasingly standardized and externally visible. The models grew to correspond increasingly to the serial numbers; by the time we reached ~100 devices, the serial numbers were split into basic chassis groupings, and each chassis class took similar or identical modules, even across chassis.

It would make sense to perform destructive testing for all of the earlier models. For those that don't fly, they could do destructive static tests on the ground. Pressure tests, thermal tests, and impact tests for example. That data would be relatively cheap and easy to acquire and potentially useful for exploring limits or confirming them. Even if the design changes quite a bit, they would still be a data point for comparison.

Since when does 5880 KN represent "almost a 30% increase" in thrust over 4940 KN? By my math that's a 19% increase.

    • @ravener96
      @ravener96 6 років тому +3

19% is almost 20%, but americans think better in divisions of 2 so it's easier to say it's a fourth more powerful, now we take 25% and do lossy conversions untill we end up with 26, which we can just as well round up to the closest round number which is 30%, and
      /s
      i dont know either

    • @hevgamer6087

A quick comparison with the other space-focused channels that most of your subscribers also probably subscribe to make it clear that your background in photography is helpful. The visual quality of Fraser Cain's videos have improved greatly over the past year or so, and Vintage Space has always looked good, but the Scott Manleys, TMROs, Curious Droids and SciShow Spaces of this world have nothing on you when it comes to visual crispness!

I'm afraid you got some of those thrust figures wrong:
    - That v1.0 figure was for v1.0 Block 2, which never flew. Block 1 had lower thrust, though the actual figure is hard to find (some sources claim 450kN per engine, others 480).
    - 7607kN, the current figure on SpaceX's website, is for Block 5. Pre-Block 5 v1.2 was 6806kN.
