mine has the same issue, just bought it 3 weeks ago. its from Jan 2018. Called BMW today but they seems to be not aware of vanos problems. Torque is chittering less than in your video, however and based from the symptoms, most likely its the vanos too. Will try to fix it by myself, your video motivated to try it!
I also found Mevans' video while researching what could cause fluttering during acceleration in a B58. Since I have no idea how to do the proper datalogging (I haven't found a value for VANOS in BM3), I just replaced the exhaust side, as Mevans did, thinking it might be more prone to failing. Unfortunately the issue still persists! I'm tempted to just swap the new one over to the intake side, but for $60 I'll just order a second one so they're both new. Hope this solves my issue. I miss my smooth running B58!
Vanos has always been a huge issues with bmw is this ur first bmw if so thats probably why you missed it iv always kept an extra set cause of how often i was burning them out and also make sure them spark plugs dont back out over time causing miss fires good luck

Ever had any issue with that since? I have a weird vibration and the car is laggy. Monitored my vanos thru mhd and the exhaust side is not following exactly the requeired

The symptom you had on yours is equivalent to my Infiniti VQ variable valve solenoid. I’m surprised you did not feel bucking when you drive it out from the garage on 1st gear and feels something weird. Usually, when driving this aggressively , it won’t let you rev more than 3k rpm.

You can’t say that it broke or that it’s unreliable, because the Vanos solenoids are supposed to be serviced (changed) every 80k miles anyway.
Too late already said it. Though, I didn’t realize it was supposed to be serviced. Car had less than 70k on it during filming.
