I feel like the b58 and s55 can’t really be compared, as one is made with two turbos for the driving experience. One is a track car, one is a daily driver that just happens to make great power. Both are great motors.
I own a 340 btw. Just two different driving experiences. Great video btw:)))
Dont think its meant to be compared more about the differences so people know which one to choose
No there is a reason to compare them 😂 money to power ratio is a big reason s55 is overpriced the b58 will be around way longer
@@MrCougar1825 that’s why I own a b58 lol
@@i_villa7967 that’s great but that’s the point I was making the s55 is trash compared to b58 it’s not even a comparison s55 will be a wast of money in 5 years
I have both, and I would say I like the edgy nature of the S55. Not only that, but it revs so much quicker. The B58 is still amazing though and probably a much more comfortable and refined engine. It’s important to note that the B58 is a much simpler engine that is incredible from an engineering standpoint. The low end torque is great and so is the sound.
Great informative vid! Love the perspectives for each engine
Basically the outcome is…. Buy a B58 if you’re poor. The M car will always have that feeling you can’t just replicate.
Gahhhhhhh😢
You realise most b58 powered cars are more expensive than the dinosaur age s55 cars right? Lmfaooo
@@jdogggfulpoor
I have a 23 m240 and I can’t wait to start modding it.
I just want a s55 because I know the most I would do is just flash a stage 1 tune, do the crank hub and call it a day.
Great video great information as always but where can you find upgraded axles?
Thank you for this comparison. I am currently cross shopping manual gen 1 b58 and the high mileage s55 dct cars, i dont have any intention of doing more than intake exhaust maybe ethanol. I am concerned that i would eventually regret paying an inflated price for a clean manual b58 just because they are so uncommon, because i put a ton of miles on my cars and would likely lose my shirt on it. I think im going to try for an s55 car for a short term daily just to experience it, while the manual b58s and s65s are still more expensive.
I can't wait to have my new M2 and what the mods will be for the new S58. I mean right now it makes close to 500 HP at the wheels from factory, I can't imagine what it will do with a few mods.
I have a m240 xdrive and I absolutely love it. I'm at 500whp with pump, getting ready to go port injection and run E. Hoping to see 650whp, just hoping the xdrive can handle that much power
I believe the m240 transmission would need to be built for that?
I think so too, you might start slipping in the 600whp range
You will start to slip in 6th mainly and if your a 16/17 DO YOUR INJECTORS mine just gave out and ruined my engine just after gettign a hybrid turbo
F series or G series m240i?
You also get a DCT with the S55 which IMO is just the cherry on top. DCT will always give the car that race car feel which I love. Especially after the xHP transmission flash
I own a 600hp b58 but i want a s55 because it is just more savage
Complete false! The b58 is way stronger then the s55.
@@ganuv do you know the difference between strong and savage?
@@bartbersselaar3968 savage, i like it
@@bartbersselaar3968 and incredibly jealous lol
My S55 on ethanol is definitely savage asf… b58 sounds cool but it doesn’t feel as aggressive
Good info!
B58 COOL BUT MAN GET YOU A M3 OR A M4 WITH A S55 UPGRADE TO A 4 PIN CRANK HUB FLASH IT,RUN it on e85 easy 550HP TO THE WHEELS
I own a 440i 2017 very fast car with out the extras, I didn’t think I could beat teslas but I did plain and x model flawless❤.
Don’t really think the price is a fair argument. An S55 will always be more expensive it’s an M car. Genuine Carbon fibre from BMW is also more expensive for an m3/4 then a m140/240/340 so what’s the point made? A Lamborghini Urus is the same car as an Audi RSQ8 , waste of money then?
S55 is much more efficient, Mod for mod will walk a B58. Stage 1 vs Stage 1 , Stage 2 Vs Stage 2 , Stage 3 vs stage 3 , Fully forged Vs fully forged. Each stage on pump fuel 😉
No comparison between them a b58 is the poor man’s M car !
The B58 pistons are designed pretty cool. I've never seen a piston design like this, im going to post a video of an S54, N54, B58 video later, piston design is definitely changing.
And why pistons are breaking in B58?
Well answered. We’re just consumers. Therefore, it’s personal preference and speculation, unless you work for BMW.
Just got my b58 ‘17 440i coupe and have fallen in love lol. Such a great car even from stock
I got a 17 plate m140i 3 years ago got it mhd stage 2 with Downpipe xhp3 gearbox tune 455bhp
Im an Audi guy, and I say S58 is king. Easy choice.
Imagine the s55 or s58 in the supra. Game over. And I only have ever had the b58 and still do, m240 xdrive
Its coming, special edition with the S58
i think in 2025 the supra is coming out with the s58
N20 is King LMAO. Seriously though, it's hard to compare an S and B engine because of the platforms. NOW owning a S55 and S58, I'm feeling the effortless power delivery of the S58 over the on edge S55 feeling. S58 feels like a smooth jazz singer. S55 feels like Tweek from South Park. Always cracked out ready to bug out at any moment. That feeling is fun some times but nah. S58 is daddy lol.
N20 gang😂
The video is about the B58 not the S58, obviously.
S58>B58>S55>N54 with Index 12 and Eldor>N55
that's exactly the good thing lol, never know when the S55 is gonna try to randomly kill you at any point
if we just talk about the motor itself, b58 all day, it's just better built and easier to work with. However s55 come in M cars with much better chassis, so a bit hard to compare.
A B58-swap in an F80 sounds pretty nice.
@@csboi That would be nice. I did see someone on bimmerpost that did a b58 swap into an OG M2. Big hassle tho.
Best chasis so far is the supra, stock b58 supra is beating the s58 m2 stock for stock
@@ThePrestigeification In terms of what? 0-60? Or around a track? The s58 m2 is really just an m4 with a smaller body kit, it is insanely heavy. Now, the F generation m2 with a b58 in my opinion would definitely beat supra in terms of how it drives and handles. Other than that, no idea.
@@ramen9996 around the track*. 0-60 the s58 m2 won. Savagegeese’s video put both cars head to head on the same track with the same driver, weather, day and what not.
Almost seems a no brainer to get a b58 if you plan on modding it..
I mean it’d be lovely to say “I own a m3” over a “340i” but not enough to warrant the extra money and maintenance..
Oh, and obviously the m kits you get on the full m cars.. but I guess you can also add that.
B58 is surely the best engine for money right now
I currently own an M4 but previously an M140i. The S55 makes 500whp with decat downpipes and tune. The old M140i made just under 400whp with the exact same mods. In order to get the B58 to even come near the S55 i would have had to spend another £4-5k on hybrid turbos and Dorch hpfp. At this point i thought, why not just buy the M4/S55? The S55 is a superior engine out of the box.
Not true 140i with this mode is 470 horsepower
@@francescosaia4475 with a TU HPFP it's def. not 500whp but close enough... the 140i is 200kg lighter than the m4
Why would you choose the m240 over the m340 xdrive?
New m240 is awd. Smaller, lighter, more nimble..
@@thicwhipsclipsyup it’s shorter wheelbase makes it just more fun from a handling perspective. Unless you put drag tires on a Supra, it ain’t beating an m240i xdrive if they’re both tuned to 600 whp.
I found a 340i xdrive with 56,000 selling for 26,995 do I buy?
Yes
yes
Yes. Easily
What about bmw m440i f32? Can we consider same things as 340i?
Yes+it should be lighter
@@tombudziak3107I think the 440i is heavier than the 340i
You forgot to mention the powerband differences. The M motors (s) series are tuned to be more rev happy and generally delivery more power the closer you get to the redline. They have a stronger top end and the torque doesn't fall off like it does in the non-s motors. The b58 is not a motorsports series engine and therefore it's tuned for the low to mid-range rpm torque delivery and they actually feel faster than the s55 at those lower rpms due to more torque. The caveat is that as you get closer to the redline, the torque falls off much earlier on the b58 vs the s55 which is tuned for the high-rev driving on a track.
So the difference between the two motors isn't about the absolute power figures but it's about the character of the engine. The two engines are tuned for different applications and have a different character. The b58 gives the car more of a muscle car feel with its low end torque where the s55 gives the car more of the traditional sports car feel with its top end power.
Absolutely not true…. On stock turbos all your power is mid range to about 6000 rpm. Only with upgraded turbos that is the case. The S55 is a low end torque monster.
@@noahsantourian214you’ve got the engines mixed up buddy lol
Did he sell the m4 gts tho
Yes
so its all on the application of the car vs how much you wanna spend.
AWD supra wagon = 2020 X3 M40i with the M diff
Should i get the m240i or m2?
M2
What about the s58?
s58 is king
B58 Never Falling off 😉
S58 if I could afford 😅😂
Aftermarket support on the b58 edges s55 by some
The S55 makes more power for less $ mod for mod. The B58 is a great motor but there is way too much hype for what it is.
can't really talk money when comparing them. s55 is terribly pricey to get to begin with
Crankhub
B58 TU mo betta?
B58 is way better and it’s not even close coming from a Mechanic 💯
B58 is a Diesel engine! I don't like it, even it is a relieable, robust engine.
Petrol 3.0 6 cylinder turbo
S58>S55>B58
The s55 would be better than the b58 ONLY if the s55 didn't have the crank hub issue. When you want to do fbo and stage 2 tune, you risk spinning your crankhub on the s55. If you want the crank hub fix on the s55 it is going to cost $3k-$4k just for the fix. Imo the B58 is a better engine only because it is easier to mod and doesn't have a crank hub issue and more reliable. I love the looks of the M4 but if you're talking about price for the power overall, i'd say get the b58. If you plan to go s55 stage 2 fbo and plan to keep it for a long time. Get the crank fix
B58 all-time
the answer is YES, the B58 is better in every way.
B58 is better simple
Nither!!! both eat rod bearings. BMW themselves said that rod bearings are consumable..BLAHAHA. rod bearings need to be replaced every 70 to 80k. That's Freaking Ridiculous. BMW recommends that. Crappy engineering. BMW overrated.
You're obviously here just to hate and say stupid stuff.
Do you own either car?
You have zero idea concerning the reliability of the S55.
@@soldierviejo8224 do you own one? Yes sir BMW themselves said rod bearings are consumable. Lol funny right. Crappy if you ask me. Rod knock are infamous on BMW l6s. BMW stated that rod bearings need to replace. I'd be butthurt as well.
@@Al-mx6ru I own 2 BMWs (you can see both on my page) besides you didn't point out a specific model.
