I have both, and I would say I like the edgy nature of the S55. Not only that, but it revs so much quicker. The B58 is still amazing though and probably a much more comfortable and refined engine. It’s important to note that the B58 is a much simpler engine that is incredible from an engineering standpoint. The low end torque is great and so is the sound.

Thank you for this comparison. I am currently cross shopping manual gen 1 b58 and the high mileage s55 dct cars, i dont have any intention of doing more than intake exhaust maybe ethanol. I am concerned that i would eventually regret paying an inflated price for a clean manual b58 just because they are so uncommon, because i put a ton of miles on my cars and would likely lose my shirt on it. if we just talk about the motor itself, b58 all day, it's just better built and easier to work with. However s55 come in M cars with much better chassis, so a bit hard to compare.
@@ThePrestigeification In terms of what? 0-60? Or around a track? The s58 m2 is really just an m4 with a smaller body kit, it is insanely heavy. Now, the F generation m2 with a b58 in my opinion would definitely beat supra in terms of how it drives and handles. Other than that, no idea.

Don’t really think the price is a fair argument. An S55 will always be more expensive it’s an M car. Genuine Carbon fibre from BMW is also more expensive for an m3/4 then a m140/240/340 so what’s the point made? A Lamborghini Urus is the same car as an Audi RSQ8 , waste of money then? S55 is much more efficient, Mod for mod will walk a B58. Stage 1 vs Stage 1 , Stage 2 Vs Stage 2 , Stage 3 vs stage 3 , Fully forged Vs fully forged. Each stage on pump fuel 😉 No comparison between them a b58 is the poor man’s M car !

I currently own an M4 but previously an M140i. The S55 makes 500whp with decat downpipes and tune. The old M140i made just under 400whp with the exact same mods. In order to get the B58 to even come near the S55 i would have had to spend another £4-5k on hybrid turbos and Dorch hpfp. At this point i thought, why not just buy the M4/S55? N20 is King LMAO. Seriously though, it's hard to compare an S and B engine because of the platforms. NOW owning a S55 and S58, I'm feeling the effortless power delivery of the S58 over the on edge S55 feeling. S58 feels like a smooth jazz singer. S55 feels like Tweek from South Park. You forgot to mention the powerband differences. The M motors (s) series are tuned to be more rev happy and generally delivery more power the closer you get to the redline. They have a stronger top end and the torque doesn't fall off like it does in the non-s motors. The b58 is not a motorsports series engine and therefore it's tuned for the low to mid-range rpm torque delivery and they actually feel faster than the s55 at those lower rpms due to more torque. The caveat is that as you get closer to the redline, the torque falls off much earlier on the b58 vs the s55 which is tuned for the high-rev driving on a track. So the difference between the two motors isn't about the absolute power figures but it's about the character of the engine. The two engines are tuned for different applications and have a different character. The b58 gives the car more of a muscle car feel with its low end torque where the s55 gives the car more of the traditional sports car feel with its top end power.
Absolutely not true…. On stock turbos all your power is mid range to about 6000 rpm. Only with upgraded turbos that is the case. The S55 is a low end torque monster.

Interesting perspective, but your arguments are based as much or more on the cars the engines are in rather than the engines themselves.
