"Warmify the Mix" - My new favourite expression 😄
I'm still blown away by the Neve 542's they're so good
Price aside. You prefer the sound of them or the Fatso? I can never decide and don’t own either just for my virtual studio fantasy 😂 These do sound great!
Nice lesson! now i just need 100k to get all that gear ahahahah
It can be done with plugins, but of course you gon lose the depth that analog gives.
Just pass the mixed signal through a neve mbt on access analog after everything is done
@@listenfidiyup plugins just can’t give depth like analog but that’s why i got hybrid best of both worlds
Man, I bought new set of monitors and your mixes translate like crazy...no same level of equipment but I'm using some of your projects as reference mixes already...🙂👽
🙏🙌
Good job man!🤘🏾👏🏾
PQ sounds so freaking good again
Great video. Each step well explained. I wish SSL would release the HF Compressor as a 500 series unit. It's the only part of the Fusion that I want.
Mix was really great even before it hit the 2bus! Nice !
Thank you!
Dave, Great video. I like to see more. I still want to see the SSL Bus+ & Wes Audio master bus compressor shoot out. Is it coming soon?
I don't know about soon, there's a lot of videos in line before that but eventually yes
@@mixbustv Thank you Dave.
So you're adding saturation from THD on the wes audio, neve tape emulators and the black box. Do you think the same effect could be achieved by just dialling in more saturation on the neves/wes and leaving the black box out for example, or vice versa? I understand that one is tape and the other is tube but doesn't it get too overpowering especially when they're all being used on the mix bus?
I really wish I could by that EAR 660 compressor
🔥
Spacecraft 🌬️
On your wall. How helpful for room treatment are those whites shaped square panels stuck to the wall? Do they provide diffusion or something?
It's a bit of diffusion yes, but that's like 1% of my treatment. They're definitely more for aesthetic
U are richman bro, our dream
Is this band sasquash? Sounds fucking heavy ! Very useful tricks
hi, cool video! would you be comfortable with this much processing on an ITB mix?

If you're just using plugins on the mixbus of a track that is going to be mastered, would you advise ever purposely doing less mixbus processing to allow the mastering engineer to do it instead with their analog gear?
Definitely. Altho' mixbus processing is not the same as mastering.
Hello David, thank you for this video, very useful. Please, I need your advice. I have a Manley Core and I'm happy with it, I don't change it for anything, but I'm missing a compressor for Bus Stereo ("master") and I want HW, could you tell me if an ART VLA2, SCL 2 or an FMR 1773 suits me better, or some other that you can think of in that price range. I want a Stereo compressor that doesn't spoil the sound quality of the Manley and be able to use it in Stereo,... If I had money, I would buy another Manley,... Thank you very much,
If you want the same quality than the Manley, but stereo, you will have to spend twice the money compared to the (mono) Core or the equivalent for a stereo one.
Thank you very much for your response David, unfortunately an equivalent to Manley in Stereo is not in my budget (I don't make a living from music, it's a hobby), but I love good sound. Understanding your comment (which I share 100%), what stereo compressor in that price range or something higher could you recommend? The truth is that today I can buy one of the ones I mentioned to you, maybe you recommend that I wait a while (raise more money) and buy a more intermediate one (I say, up to about 1500 - 2500). I would appreciate your suggestions if you can, thank you very much for your time again, you are the best

Great video David! If I’m not mistaken you mastered this song as well, right? How much processing was needed in this case after that 2bus processing? Like just tools to bring it to loudness or was a full “mastering-chain” needed?
Yes I did, not much and I'm pretty sure it was all ITB at that point. It was "just" a matter of maintaining the balance of the mix while pushing it to level and maybe there was one or two subtle eq moves
@@mixbustv Nice! This song has made it to my playlist of “reference songs” I listen to for inspiration for my own projects (also with tracks mixed by Andy Wallace amongst many others).
Do you have a specific video showcasing techniques for maintaining the balance and integrity of the mix while pushing it for loudness? Otherwise would it be a topic you could demonstrate in a video?
@@mrspoon1956 that's awesome! I'm releasing a new mastering course (Mastering Alt Rock) at the end of the month with a full class on that. It's a case by case thing but that will definitely give you a good idea. It's a start to finish and it's on a pretty complex song so it's gonna be a good reference
Nice sound/mix. Definitely sounded better and more open to me without the Blackbox. Kills the openness and punch too much.
I wonder what would be the best compressor hardware for 2 bus between the Shadow Hill, SPL Iron and Elysia Alpha? 🤔
You named 3 of THE most different compressors ever. SH is an SSL with an opto added to it, for which I honestly find NO use on 2bus. It's very very grabby and I personally am not a big fan. The 3 xformers are cool but I ain't paying 7K for 3 transformers (or an SSL). Iron is good, Howie has it but of all tube comps is definitely the most clean which goes a bit against the idea of having a tube compressor. It's very tweakable but all the different weird SC curves don't really give you much benefit in real life. Alpha literally destroy all of them without even sweating. That unit is an absolute piece of art AND engineering. Beautiful unit my favorite by far.
@@mixbustv Ok cool. Everyone praises the Alpha as the ultimate 2 bus compressor
@@PharaohLawLess1it is definetly the most versatile out of the 3 you mentioned. If you can only have one, the alpha is the best choice and can handle everything.
Any thoughts yet on those HRKs compared to the 542s?
Haven't tried them yet. I have 4 new units to go..
Would you do so much if you were sending it off to be mastered? It seems to be blurring the line between mixing and mastering. I'm asking about you personally, but also if we at home should be trying to emulate this if we're going to get someone else to master the song. 🤔
Mixbus processing is not mastering. Like I said many times before, you don't "delegate" anything to mastering, the mix needs to sound like a record. Mastering should be minor adjustments for a great mix, not patching holes. Limiting is the only stage that should be left to mastering
@@mixbustv Thanks David, I just wanted the clarification. Thanks for your reply! 🙂👍
On a phone there is no difference 2bus on or off. Zip.
😂😂😂
I dare you to get close to that sound with plugins

There are legendary mixers who absolutely produce phenomenal mixes completely in the box. Andrew Scheps was recently nominated for a Grammy for a classical album he worked on. He sold a monster Neve console and hasn't looked back. For sure when comparing the capabilities of a 10,000.00 hardware unit directly with a plugin that can often be had for 30.00, the hardware will almost always win, except for the part where one can use unlimited instances of a plugin, and often they add functions that don't exist on the hardware, but plugins, in the hands of experts like Andrew Scheps, can absolutely create world class results. His famous saying, "the only thing that matters is what comes out of the speakers" is constantly on my mind when I see these kind of comments. It's as if you think that there's something more meaningful if you compare two mixes that are equal in quality, but one uses this expensive gear, even if they both bring listening enjoyment equally. Michael Brauer also comes to mind. I would take ANY of his best work over many hardware only mixers. He's a true artist. If he's good with it, so am I.
