  • A guide on how to replace the upper wishbones for the Alfa Romeo 147, 156 or GT. The bushings on these parts perish like crazy and it won't be long before you hear that dreaded front suspension knocking sound. Time to change it (unless it's something more sinister)

Actually western europeans don't know that you can easily restore these bolt joints. It is cheaper, last longer than new parts even OEM stuff. 70000-80000 km is normal for these restored units even when driving mostly on unpaved roads.

    hello, thanks for the video.
Could you tell us how a ball joint should be on a new part? I have just received 2 new parts, and I am surprised by the difference in flexibility between the ball joint of the left and right part ? I was expecting a new, fairly firm ball joint, and one of them is very flexible and that worries me. I think that it is to easy to move by hand. I'm afraid of rapid degradation after installation with a so flexible ball joint.
Is this normal? Thank you for your help

hi, the ball joint when brand new should be stiff to move initially as you break the grease and should become easier to move the more you move it.... but at the same time it should remain tight. If you move the stiffer ball joint back and forth a few times, it should become equally loose as the other one. Most important is to listen for any scraping metal to metal noise when you're moving it/knocking or looseness.

@@ikra thanks for answer. I think that the stiff ball joint is normal. When I try to move initialy, it is difficult but became more easier with several manipulation. After a little rest time, the begining is already difficult with a new try. I think this ball joint is good. But the other is too flexible for a brand new item. I will send back to the seller for a new one. Thanks for your help

If you need a ball joint splitter you are doing it wrong.
Just hit the upright where the ball joint taper goes through, taper will let go due to the shock

Why did you use hex 5.5 socket instead of hex 5.
I couldn't find hex 5.5 socket but what brand did you use?

I cant undo my droplink. The nut just keeps spinning.

    • @clintstechtips6571

you need to keep the bolt in place with the wrench before unscrewing it with the allen key, otherwise it will just spin forever.

I did hold the nut with a wrench and then used an impact gun with a Allan key in it and it just spun and spun until smoke was coming out of the back of the link.

i guess its a case of just cutting the drop link then.

I just cut the nut off with an angle grinder

yeah, the 147, 156,159,gt, etc all of them eat suspension components for breakfast. All my other cars have suspensions lasting more than 150,000 kilometers without needing a replacement! This will be my last ever alfa.

@@TheKalwasinski replaced it with cheap aftermarkets. It's been 40k miles since I've changed them and they're still going strong. Just shows how crap the ones fitted from factory were.
