It's scary to think any live service game can be shut down if the company deems it a failure. From Apex legends mobile to this, all your progress is erased.
Fr. I think these companies should be legally required to support community servers. If you don’t wanna pay for the servers any more, fair enough. But you can’t just take people’s property away.

I still play old Arena shooters. Still have UT2004 installed on my PC. That said, I didn't know how you could improve upon the originals with a remaster beyond what mods already do.
Modern graphics look too busy compared to the clean minimalistic aesthetics that makes it easier to spot enemies when bunny hopping around the map at 50mph of the originals.

I'm using the nvidia profile inspector to force 8X SGSSAA, and let me tell you, even at 1080p it looks CLEEEAAAAN. The aesthetics, along with the gameplay, have aged incredibly well.
These guys and their soft stances. I mean c'mon Ollie, you're comparing Concord to Overwatch and saying that Concord can't compete when Overwatch has been developed for 8 years, hell, Concord was in development for the last 8 years also.
If it was F2P, people still wouldn't give it a shot, and they didnt when it was having free play weekends. The design of the whole thing is awful. It had 2 Beta weekends for pre order players, but didn't have enough pre orders so they had to open it up to everyone and nobody played it lol.
My lessons learned after today's announcement:

I think it was a little of everything, and the entire mechanic saying "you can only choose your hero until you once, once you win you have to change hero" made no sense....a hero shooter were i cant play my hero....
Its a good move to scrub it now actually, since there isnt alot of appeal to this game, especially people are likely fatigued by this genre it would be dead shortly after release and with new laws on the table forcing studios to keep servers open or open the source code, for essentially dead games, something like this would be first in line for that
Invest in many small AA games. Diversify. You can afford one or two of them to flop. That's what Nintendo does. It's the only way forward.
At least there was a refund. Some companies should be taken to court IMO for literally stealing from customers when their £60 game stops working because it requires internet authentication - but the servers are shut down by the company.
The State Of Play wasn't the canary in the coal mine for Concord, Anthem 5 years ago was the canary in the coal mine for the live service model. A few games that have released since then have found success but so many more have crashed and burned.

Helldivers 2 is legit one the best games I've ever played. They hit it out of the park with every aspect of the actual gameplay: movement, guns and shooting, cooperation and friendly fire. It's overtly worth more than $60 and it goes for $40.

Totally agree with the gotg comparisons. When it first came out the first thing I thought of was how every single character felt like a gotg reject.
The 'what people want' dilemma is such a tricky crossroads. I don’t think we’ve ever had a narrow view of what’s considered good or bad across all entertainment industries, which I believe is a result of how personalised and tailored our media is these days. Very rarely will someone open an app and not see content directly tailored to their specific interests. As a result, we’ve landed in a situation where creatives and businesses often adopt a cookie-cutter approach out of fear that anything new might not resonate well.
AAA games are supposed to be "what people want."
If you want to make a game "nobody wants" make it low-budget. Indie games basically have thousands of games "nobody ask for." And most of them actually flop.
But one in a thousand, there will always be a "game nobody knew they wanted" and become wildly succesful.
Then, they can make an AAA sequel based on the innovative gameplay.
Making a huge-budget AAA game "nobody want" is just plain crazy.

To try and save what they built, they would definitely have to recreate the characters so they look more appealing/interesting. A good anime could help. Then F2P, playerbase increases, then they create skins for guns, animations and etc and sell those in the store just like other f2p games do. Also, some crossovers would definitely help.
All of this requires investment, I'm not really sure they will be willing to even try.
Personally, I don't spend money on this kind of stuff, but I'm always surprised by how many people do.
Yea... In this case the only way to salvage is to follow the example of Cyberpunk 2077. I bet their current success started when the anime was released; I know they have improved a lot in 2.0 version but those are still not compelling enough.
They made the right move by releasing an anime that triggered our emotion with the characters and their story, and making us want to live in their world; not to discount the quality of the animation though because it's on another level.
When woke goes into design and narrative from in-game to marketing.. then you go broke.
IP are under pressure from woke in whole of entertainment. And luckily gamers have been quick, and showed thst gatekeeping and no more benefit of the doubt.

Going free-to-play and maybe coming up with a unique PvE mode could work. I'd definitely give it another chance! Gunplay and movement - they did nail the basics!

Free to play isdefinitely a great starting point. But there has to be some investment in redesigning the characters. I found the character design to be lacking. I am a professional artist/instructor and I must say that, I didn't even know who the healers were because there was nothing to suggest that functionality was present. The visual cues for the characters were ambiguous and ugly and the characters were so unappealing that I wouldn't even select many of them even if they had a decent kit. They were just grating. I think one thing you guys didn't bring up is, in the American public it seems like there's a repulsion toward not just corporate kind of games but games that have an agenda. If there's even a whiff of that, a lot of people will just pull out their pitchforks. Which for better for worse is just how it is. I think, there needs to be sincerity and authenticity in the game development it needs to feel like it's and being made to be incredibly fun and... While I did have fun with the game I do feel like the game was a bit too slow and the movement was too slow and it just lacked the thrill. There were so few emergent moments that arose out of the gameplay that made you hungry for more. The one thing that I loved was that the gunplay felt a little bit like Destiny and I just absolutely love the way Destiny feels. And that's what kept me coming back. It was as if I was getting to play Destiny in an alternate universe. But that said it just felt a little too slow a little too floaty and definitely didn't have that magical hook in the gameplay. I think if they can come up with something really vibrant as far as a gameplay loop and redesign some of the characters and make it free to play it could totally work.... But I also think they're going to have to shed those elements that feel rooted in an agenda. There's a huge population in gamers that are very angered by anything that seems to be trying to align with any particular agenda. I think gamers just want sincerity. They want fun. They want something that's not going to preach to them or feel like it's from a corporate checklist.
All of that said, I thought the presentation was excellent and I thought the graphics were beautiful. It's just the art design characters design most importantly were very lacking. I think there are some really good bones in there. They're so nice framework that can be built upon. The technology is very good. The graphic design or I should say just generally the presentation was amazing. But it's still has a long road ahead if it wants to be something new and exciting.

Concord's failure is what happens when you ignore what gamers want and create a product for a "modern audience". I think that's something you can't admit, or any other journalists for obvious reasons. The problem wasn't that it was a hero shooter or that the gameplay wasn't polished, be honest.
Yeah, it was more a "Modern Audience" problem plus the 40$ entry point, is because of that than the "make it Free to Play" option isn't gonna change the situation to much, It's going to require a lot of investment and massive overhaul in the game design, plus make it free to play, to be appealing.
Where’s the evidence for this? Yeah, the cherry-picking can happen the other way too. What about Baldur’s Gate 3’s success?

Depends on the game. In CPU limited titles it won't. It has the exact same CPU as the base console, so for games where the CPU can't push more than 30fps on the base model, it won't be any higher on the pro.

we absolutely need to talk about concord. concord is the best fps I have played in years. it plays like quake arena and not like ow at all. gameplay is KING right? the maps are fantastic and a ton of fun to master and all characters has a number of movements nuances about every single one of them; this is an action character arena shooter, that's to say nothing about the best shooting haptic feed i've ever felt in a shooter, the game i DIAMOND SOLID, from shooting to map design, the 3d sound is masterful, the graphics and fidelity on par with something like God of War, concord is GOTY and I'm not even joking
