Then the store blessedly closes for the night and you talk smack with your coworkers while mopping the floor.
The reason there are 19 rings is because there were originally 16 and all were meant for the elves, but then Celebrimbor got over excited and made 3 superior ones behind Sauron's back. Thanks to this, when Sauron forged the 1, they sensed when Sauron put on the 1 Ring and realized his plan so they removed the rings and hid them. Sauron, of course being furious went to take not only the original 16 but he demanded the 3 elven ones too (which he never got even after torturing Celebrimbor quite harshly). Sauron fell back on his new plan, realizing controlling the elves with those rings (which was the initial plan) he'd settle for trying it on the dwarves. He gave them seven but it quickly became clear that because of how the dwarves came to be, they were naturally resistant to domination by others, even someone like Sauron. It still corrupted them but he could not control them. He would attempt to regain those 7 and did get his hands on some over time but he was a busy man and was forced to settle with giving the remaining 9 to men as he learned they succumbed to his influence EXACTLY as intended. That is far more interesting than "Oh well we're trying to balance things so let's keep making more cause that's not suspicious despite weird and bad things keep happening and Galadriel went through with this plan knowing full well it was what he wanted". He went to the Elves, specifically the smiths of Eregion claiming to be an ambassador of the Valar who wished to help teach them how to improve their craft via the forging of 16 rings that would secure the elves' interests in Middle Earth.
exactly! Having the 3 forged first with a lot of Sauron's direct influence not too mention him pawing the tools and raw materials that made them completely ruins the nature and purpose of these 3 rings. Tolkien doesn't state it directly but one can infer because the 3 were made in secret and after the creation of the 16 Great Rings when Celebrimbor reached the height of his craft that these 3 allowed the elves to perceive Sauron's intent the instant he put on his One Ring and made his incantation to ensnare the rings. I don't think the elves with the 16 rings made with Sauron's direct involvement would have been able to do that as this was all part of his plan from the get-go. Celebrimbor wanting his own masterpiece he could call his own completely wrecked Sauron's scheme. We can imagine both parties were surprised at the same moment - Celebrimbor realizing Annatar is Sauron and Sauron realizing the gig was up after all his careful planning because Celebrimbor unwittingly outsmarted him. That would have made for a great dual scene seeing both of them realizing they had betrayed each other and Sauron absolutely furious. Perhaps this is what took him so long as well to get his war with the elves started because he was so distraught and needed time to rethink his strategy (plus he might have been hesitant in case the Valar chose to intervene). In the Tale of Years nearly a century passes between Sauron's ruse being discovered and him invading Eregion. This shows that Sauron was so confidant in his Ring plan that he hadn't built up an army because he felt he didn't need one. Then as you say he came up with a Plan B - capture the rings and use them to dominant the other races. The fact he didn't just abandon the whole ring thing shows a dogged determination to see it through one way or another. This also explains why he hated Celebrimbor so much that he used his corpse as a banner. Amazon already had the working of a good story of deceit and surprise deliverance just from the Appendices and LOTR text but they completely and utterly botched it.
@@RoninDave Yes, it's so stupid they got this wrong. I can't understand why or how anyone would deliberately sink their own project wih such an obvious and terminal error
@@RoninDave Pretty sure that once Sauron had forged the One Ring he didn't have the option to back out of the ring plan, not entirely. He'd sunk too much of himself into it. Besides, what else was he going to do with the already-forged lesser rings? Ignore some useful tools, just because?
6:13 imagine if someone said: "Yea, he/she has been a faithful husband/wife, even if he/she has hooked up with a dozen other people during this relationship." Insane.
Rings of Power feels so much more like a parody than a serious adaptation of the second age lore and had it been pitched as such, the show would have been more successful- it honestly feels more like a satire than Tolkien’s world of fantasy.
I doubt very much that JRRT, a staunch Roman Catholic, had, purposely or accidentally, written any non-straight characters in LotR or any related media.
In fact he wrote it in the Silmarillion, when the Valar make for themselves physical bodies and clothes, Tolkien explicitly remarks that the Valar didn't chose a gender, but simply following their nature, masculine or feminine which was defined since their creation. There are no social constructs in that.
From that it describes they are still straight as they are who they are supposed to be from creation and not twisted or corrupted by modern insanity @@ReinoldFZ
@@cosmicmuffin322 "Therefore the Valar may walk, if they will, unclad, and then even the Eldar cannot clearly perceive them, though they be present. But when they desire to clothe themselves the Valar take upon them forms some as of male and some as of female; for that difference of temper they had even from their beginning, and it is but bodied forth in the choice of each, not made by the choice, even as with us male and female may be shown by the raiment but is not made thereby. But the shapes wherein the Great Ones array themselves are not at all times like to the shapes of the kings and queens of the Children of Ilúvatar; for at times they may clothe themselves in their own thought, made visible in forms of majesty and dread"
I mean we do. That's the beauty of Tolkien's writing: its appeal to common humanity. Do I see non-hetero characters in the story? No. Do I need to to see myself in them? No. Because I don't define my life or personality by my orientation. Anyone that needs to share superficial characteristics with a fictional character to feel "seen" in a story isn't looking to relate to the writing, they are looking for outside validation.
The most confounding thing about Rings of Power is that there are thousands of pages of stories by Tolkien that haven't ever been adapted to film or TV, yet they chose to make up an entire story that significantly veers away from the source material. I can't imagine the hubris required to think you are "redressing a great imbalance" by altering one of the great fictional universes in history so it aligns with "The Message".
The Tolkien Estate under Christopher categorically woudl NEVER release rights to anything that hadn't already been licensed out. They only licensed these rights because the film rights to the LOTR appendices were already out there. So far his successors have held to this policy. Given the copyright for most of the stuff doesn't expire for 19 years, though, we'll see if that holds. Oddly The Silmarillion itself is under copyright for longer in the US due to a weird quirk of US copyright law, but the underlying material for it will fall out in 19 years... it'll be pretty crazy for a few years unless we get comprehensive copyright reform before then.
Imo, it's probably not hubris, and more likely insanity. Because they keep doing the same thing over and over and over and over again and expect a different outcome.
@@christophersmith8316 But nothing required them to veer away from the source material... they just didn't have adaptation rights for those stories, and would have to get approval if they used canon that was not in the LotR appendices. But wouldn't the estate have given that approval if they knew that the alternative was Galadriel swimming halfway across the ocean? Arguably the RoP team chose a time period that presented very few potential conflicts because it was so not fleshed out, and then they went and made some up anyway.
definitely when you have a $1B budget you get A-list actors and even better for fantasy sometimes, B-list diamonds. but the z-grade show-shunners directors, producers and casting found their level with the acting talent. most more wooden than an Ent, others thought they'd be cast for Marry Poppins.
I wish they made Celebrimbor, more like the version from Shadows of Mordor. Ironically I think someone in the design department was inspired by the games for Saurons outfit...shame it doesn't look very good 😂
I've watched many of your videos explaining the slaughter of Tolkien's world, and no one else quotes this situation better than Albert Einstein when he said "I fear the day when the technology overlaps with our humanity. The world will only have a generation of idiots."
The problem with this show is, the writers are just incompetent. You can diverge from source material and still write a good show. Not these people. Take the bearded strangers arc. It will probably end in one of two ways. He'll either be revealed to be Gandalf, which everyone guessed from the beginning, or it will be a monumental fake-out, "Grand Elf" references notwithstanding. Both outcomes will be equally disappointing. The first because, duh, you need two seasons for that? The second because it will be incredibly annoying in light of all the wordplay silliness. "Grand Elf Looking for a gand." If it has any other type of resolution, I'll be surprised indeed.
And his whole story in Season 1 was just to serve as a mystery box. You could cut out his entire story from Season 1 and it doesn't affect anything. The idiot writers think that multiple storylines like in LOTR and Game of Thrones are what make viewers interested not comprehending those multiple storylines need to connect and support the main storyline. Everything the separate groups did in LOTR worked to the main goal - the other half of the Fellowship distracted Sauron causing him to miss Frodo and Sam slipping in to destroy the Ring. When GoT was good the separate storylines showed consequences. The problem was towards the end because the source material ran out the show started having plotlines that served no purpose like the whole Dorne thing. ROP didn't learn this valuable lesson.
I doesn't matter what the public thinks, the "writers" don't know and when the time comes, they will choose whatever annoys the traditionalists the most.
I’d put money on the “Gil-Gadaddy” guy making up that nickname himself just to get it trending. The only person that was there when “someone said it to him” was him. He 100% made it up.
Im not entirely sure people who are actually enjoying the rings of power have ever picked up a book..let alone read all three books of The Lord of the Rings..or could even pronounce the Silmarillion.
There are, apparently, a couple of theories floating around the very shallow pool of RoP fandom, especially those prone to shipping certain characters (sigh). I found out about it on YT’ber Lady Gravemaster's channel. Her vid outlined two hilarious takes and I was rolling with laughter. *THEORY 1:* Adar is actually Celeborn. He was captured by Sauron and corrupted into his current form. The corruption cost him his memory too which explains why he doesn’t know who Galadriel is, and of course, making him unrecognizable, which explains why Galadriel doesn’t know who he is when she met him initially. HAhAHAHAHAH.. HAHAHAHAHA… and-and-and… because Galadriel’s ring has healing powers, by the end, she’ll heal Adar of the corruption and he’ll be back to his original form. That, according to those ROP fans, would also explain why Sauron is so obsessed with Galadriel- because pursuing her was a way to get back at Adar/Celebron HAHAHAHAHA..HHAHAHAHAHAHAAh.. ehehehehehehe ... I'm laughing again as I type this. *THEORY 2:* The young elf, Mirdania-the one Sauron says reminds him of Galadriel *nudge nudge/wink wink* -- but is actually Celebrian! TA-DA!!! So Mirdania will meet Elrond and that will begin their love story. (slaps forehead) God. This show. I hope this is exactly how this show presents them. It will turn fans against them even more. I honestly could not have predicted this as it’s far too clever and a very soap opera-esque take on Galadriel. (sigh) It’s dumb enough that it might be true!
Ugh! The Desperation is Strong with that One. It reminds me of the theorists of Game of Thrones when the show showed the brilliance had left it trying vainly to come up with theories that would somehow fix the inherent problems or I guess just to distract themselves from the failing narrative. There were the theories of Bran being the Night King, the Waif being Arya in disguise, Lady Stoneheart showing up, Ned returning, Bran being responsible for the Mad King becoming mad, and countless more. The theories were a sharp contrast to earlier ones as they were wilder and more improbable showing the desperation that somehow it could all be fixed. That there are ROP fans hoping an amnesia plotline for Galadriel's family lifted from daytime TV will explain and save everything is just sad. As you say even if the show were to do either or both theories it would make many people hate the show even more. It shows those few ROP fans have no concept of good storytelling and certainly don't understand Tolkien in the slightest.
One problem I find with theory 1 (and please do bear in mind I have not watched a single minute of the actual show, other than clips in videos like this one) is that Halbrand/Sauron actively tried to stay in Numenor in season 1. Galadrrrrriellle pushed him to come along. Oh, sure, those folks will simply hand-wave away that thought with "that was all part of his plan and the subtlety of his manipulation of her." Sorry, these quote-unquote writers could never be that clever. Tolkien could, but he wouldn't because it is stupid.
How much, as a fine, would Amazon have to pay to the Tolkien estate, if 5 seasons are not created? How much will Amazon pay to create 5 seasons? Does Amazon care since they're so big?
Likely there would not be a fine, they would just lose the license, based on previous such deals. There is a chance the Tolkien estate would aquire copyright to the seasons that were produced, but they may actually have that anyway... happens sometimes in these deals.
A friend of mine in Ireland just told me that he was doing a show run of P.J.'s trilogy on Prime Video, and as soon as the Fellowship of the Ring ended it immediately auto played The Rings of Power instead of The Two Towers. With workarounds like this it's possible even the counted minutes and viewership numbers are bullshit.
I just cant believe how casual they are in their interviews are...They all are behaving like ROP surpassed GoT or at least like ROP is somewhere close to GoT If you could keep anything from props and wardrobe, what would you take? Is this question serious or?What have they done to deserve anything from set? They never mentioned actual JRR Tolkien's work in their interviews, all they mentioned is DEI and shipping.
I just refuse to watch it. Same with HOTD. I'm apparently not alone in this decision. You'd think they would learn, but there are people out there who believe pushing this sort of agenda is more important than profitability, so it continues.

It's so sad seeing how big of a shill Corey Olsen is for RoP. I learned so much from his lessons over the years and really enjoyed his insights (though he used to give the Jackson movies shit because they weren't faithful enough so this shilling makes zero sense).
Olsen has been very iffy on the lore for some time now, since before RoP. I know people who have regularly pointed out incorrect information, and he almost never corrected the record, but instead doubled down. As someone who styles himself "The Tolkien Professor" and aims to appear as an authority, it's rather poor form.
I’m female and I’m angry? I’m mad because they have the rights to arguably the best written piece of literature of all time and they’ve taken it and bashed on it and made a fan fiction of it with most if not all the lore thrown out the window. Tolkien spent YEARS of his life creating hundreds of characters over thousands of years with in depth stories and character development and they said nah we can do better?? I’m okay with not watching it but I’ve been dying for YEARS to see the first or second age brought to life and this is what they’ve done with it and while they own the rights we’re unlikely to get a faithful adaption and after seeing the reaction this series has got (for GOOD REASON) it’s going to hinder other creators wanting to even try. So yeah I’m angry and I’m not an angry STAN man just a 29 year old woman whose grandmother used to read her the hobbit and lord of the rings before she passed.

I completely agree with you Disparu - for me Ep5 has been the worst episode of season 2 to date, just slightly ahead of Ep4 for worst writing. I really don't get people saying it was an improvement. How? Just because Sauron was slightly better at manipulation? 🤔🙄😆 But was he? Really? I think Celebrimboring is just as thick as two bricks. But how anyone could think anything "improved" after watching Durin's speech is beyond me. The dwarves scenes were absolutely atrocious. Didn't people listen to the garbage coming out of characters mouths?
Oddly Clark is so much more likeable in the interviews - downright charmingly odd and quirky - that her portrayal of Galadriel as an insufferable bint is an even more stark contrast. I almost feel sorry for her. Like playing Guy-ladriel is some terrible curse she has been unwillingly trapped by.
It's obvious galadriel's actress has a cute smile and a nice laugh and is actually a fairly charming person sitting on that couch. This means it's her direction to be such a horrible witch in the show. So sad so sad it's like almost exactly what they did to Gal Gadot in Wonder Woman. The behind the scenes showed that she was quite likable quite nice but the direction was to be that stoic strong woman BS
She's kind of like a "soft Aubrey Plaza", in that she's a bit weird in an endearing and funny way, but now she'll be forever associated with this dreadful role that is the opposite of charming or funny or sweet.
Indeed! Too the point I honestly didn't recognize why that was until I read this comment! (Seriously, I was wondering why the lead wasn't in any of these clips).
I agree but it's not all the director - she's clearly a horrendous actor. A good actor will give a good performance in spite of the director. A bad one will only be made worse by a bad director.
@@cosmicmuffin322 Oh yeah you're not wrong she's not a great actress at all but it's obvious that she can emote so the director is not bringing that forward

I don't believe for a second a total of 37% of the audiences watched the first season from start to finish. I think that's a fake number to mitigate the absolute disaster that was the first season. Until we get official, verified numbers, I think it was somewhere under 5%.

And pretty much killed paramount.
So, amazon might just close down the studio.

The most confounding thing about Rings of Power is that there are thousands of pages of stories by Tolkien that haven't ever been adapted to film or TV, yet they chose to make up an entire story that significantly veers away from the source material.
I can't imagine the hubris required to think you are "redressing a great imbalance" by altering one of the great fictional universes in history so it aligns with "The Message".
they didn't buy the rights for those stories.

I've watched many of your videos explaining the slaughter of Tolkien's world, and no one else quotes this situation better than Albert Einstein when he said "I fear the day when the technology overlaps with our humanity. The world will only have a generation of idiots."
Einstein never said that.
Pushing diversity especially when its not necessary is ALWAYS a mistake
I’d put money on the “Gil-Gadaddy” guy making up that nickname himself just to get it trending. The only person that was there when “someone said it to him” was him. He 100% made it up.
Im not entirely sure people who are actually enjoying the rings of power have ever picked up a book..let alone read all three books of The Lord of the Rings..or could even pronounce the Silmarillion.
Even if they know nothing of Tolkien I don't know how they could enjoy a show so badly written with such unlikable characters.
If they saw themselves in Tolkien's writings, then a lore accurate show should still be representative.

That, according to those ROP fans, would also explain why Sauron is so obsessed with Galadriel- because pursuing her was a way to get back at Adar/Celebron
HAHAHAHAHA..HHAHAHAHAHAHAAh.. ehehehehehehe ...
(slaps forehead)
God.
Please, someone, for the good of all memedom, make a "I'm a Barbie Girl" remix with scenes of Annatar 🤣🤣🤣🤣

It's obvious galadriel's actress has a cute smile and a nice laugh and is actually a fairly charming person sitting on that couch.
