Hello and what a super bunch of pictures you have done. I love your color combinations they make me smile! I am enjoying seeing how your works in progress are begun. I really like your use of white in the flowers and the clothes. Your little flower fairy you did in Oct 2019 was so joyful I could tell how much you enjoyed that. Thanks for sharing all of these and I do hope you keep making videos they are fun and I am enjoying your commentary. Have a wonderful day!

💛💛💛 your work - I particularly love the colours you use - it's inspired me to try using different colour palettes. FYI you were correct it's a flower wreath in her hair and it a coral reef in the ocean (Yep English can be confusing) p.s I love your butterfly and deer page if your wanting to balance it I see a black boarder either with washi tape or black paint/marker.

Thanks for sharing! Every time I see that picture in Botanicum with the pumpkins and the bat, I am struck by how much it reminds me of an oil painting by an Old Master. The depth in that dark background, especially considering it's done with pencils rather than paint, is just gorgeous. ♥

Oh, wow, thank you for the compliment! It's not just pencils, though, that would be some next level stuff. The marker base is really the mvp carrying the black background:)

      Thank you!
Color choosing depends on how ambitious I'm feeling, I think. If I'm just mindlessly coloring, I'll just pick up whatever pen. Most of the time, I just go for what feels right at that moment, not really planing it out, but maybe darkening up/changing some things after the whole picture is colored. And then sometimes, when I'm feeling ambitious or creative, I either go for very limited pallets or take inspiration from pictures or pieces of clothing or pintrest color combos.
My favorite book is ... Gosh, that's hard, but the one that has the most pictures colored in is Sagor och Sägner so that's definitely up there:)

First off, you are absolutely adorable. I was giggling throughout the entire video. And I LOVE you color palette choices, the limited palettes you do and the muted ones. I am so surprised that you don't use a color wheel. I've been trying to get better at color choices and some people make it look so easy and they use the color wheel but I really like your style much much better. Maybe I just need more practice.
I REALLY love the deer picture in the Nightfall book, at 5:28. I love the background with the firefly bugs. Is this on your channel already or could you kind of point me in the direction of something similar? I'm having a problem with doing small pinpoint light sources like that especially on a darker background. The technique and the thought process eludes me. It's not something I can easily see when it is in progress, so it is very hard for me to do since it's hard (for me) to imagine.
I'm a new HUGE fan. I can't wait to go through your older videos. Hope you are well 💜

Okay, so I'm looking at the deer picture and I will separated this answer into two parts: 1) General tips and tricks and how I would try to achieve the same look in an easier way and 2) What I did in that specific picture. So.
      1) If I were to do this again I would use a base of water soluble pencils (or watercolors) with pencils (polychromos) on top and white gelpen for the dots. I would start by choosing a light green inktense/albrecht durer/graphitint and making some random patches with it. Not too small, think like you want to fit a few fireflies per patch. I would go for 3-5 such patches depending on the size of the background. Then I would color in the rest of the background with a darker color taking care to keep a light touch where the two different patches border on each other and putting a bit more pigment to paper in corners. When diluting the water soluble pencil I would take care to always go from light to dark so I wouldn't loose the light patches to the darker pigment. I would not worry about the end result being a bit patchy and uneven at this stage, it's just the ugly phase, ignore it;) After it's dried I would go in with polychromos and smooth it out. I would probably end up using 3-5 different colors for this ranging from white to a darker green than the one I used while doing the base. But, yeah, this part is the most ... organic one? I can't really explain exactly what to do since it really depends on how the base turned out. But the main thing I would try to achieve is smooth gradients between the different patches, without loosing the lightest color. I know from previous pictures, that it can be tempting to cover the lighter patches with darker and darker color in an attempt to make the whole background smoother, but that's not what you're going for here so make sure you keep the contrast between light and dark. Also, at least for me, some small imperfections look nice in the end result and in the deer picture the tooth of the paper shows through quite clearly in the picture - it is far from burnished. Right. After this stage the background would hopefully be smooth-ish with 3-5 lighter areas and darker corners. The fireflies go into the light areas. It's tempting to put them all over the place, but to get the same effect as in the deer page, the lighter areas are kinda light because of the fireflies, so the shadows are dark due to their absence. Now, some of the fireflies might not be visible due to the light area being to light: that's a good thing! Just make sure a few of them are in the borderland between light and dark and it should be golden. Here are some tricks for making the dots: make them different sizes, group a few of them together into small groups - usually groups of 3 are pleasing to my eyes for some reason. Less is sometimes more - more firefly dots aren't necessarily as effective as a few well-placed ones. But hey, perfection is the enemy of good and not every picture needs to be a masterpiece, so you know;)
      2) In the deer page I seem to have used a one-color inktense base and water based markers in the corners, so the light splotches were made by just letting the paper be visible. The marker in the corner is applied in the similar pixelated effect as my video when I use two water based markers for a background. Then this base of marker and inktense was smoothed out in the same/similar way as described above. The gelpens (or posca) dots were complemented by dots in a light green water based marker as well, to give it a little extra pizza.
I do plan to make more videos on backgrounds in the future, but in the meantime I hope this made the process a bit less opaque;)

      As a bonus:
Note that I did the same in the water reflection: left a lighter patch of color and darkened the corners, smoothed it out and then added some white gelpen dots in the light patch. And when you look at photographs with the bokeh effect it seems to be similar: the bokeh circles appear where the picture is the brightest. So. Something something physics.

@@jasminerichae694 Aw, thank you^^. So happy to hear that:) Hot tip when starting out, at least if you're like me, is to have one cheap coloring book which you don't adore (for me it was Alice in Wonderland by Olga Goloveshkina) to just have as a mindless oulet. For me, it really helped drive home the fact that not everything needs to be a masterpiece, sometimes just filling in the spaces with color can be all the creative mojo my muse can manage right then and that is aaaaallllright:) Not everything needs to be perfect all the time^^.
