- In this "Pan Pastels Techniques tutorial" , I show you how effective they and time saving they are, especially for painting the underlayers. I can then very easily draw details with pastel pencils creating a very realistic fur texture in a very short amount of time.
Pnapastels for beginners : if you wan to learn "how to use panpastels" then this is a great way to start.

You are a brilliant,pure talent!!!!! You are the spirit of Rembrandt. I watch your videos. Each one, is a free lesson to all of us,even i`m drawing,painting since 80s. I used to paint with acrylics[portraits] and for landscapes i used oil colors. But you show me a new style with soft pastels,pen pastels and now with pan pastels,or all together. Thanks, Jason! I also started with Ingres paper and had some trouble. Then I tried Pastelmat with your Leopard Eyes tutorial and wow what an amazing difference. Thanks for sharing your experience and skills.
A recommendation for those who don't/can't use PanPastels is to lightly block in with soft pastels and then use isopropyl alcohol and a brush (that you don't mind getting beat up) and create washes for the underpainting. It's a good way of creating block-ins of color and darks without filling up the tooth of the paper. This method doesn't work with all pastels and it doesn't work with all papers. Generally used for thicker sanded papers (except Sennelier Lacarte) and I'm not sure but I don't think it works with PanPastel since they are hydrophobic. It may also lend itself to a more painterly finished painting depending on how loosely the underpainting is done.

I bought pan pastels a few months ago and couldn't get the hang of them, but having watched your terrific video I am going to give them another go! I love using pastels and pastel pencils too. I have painted many animals and birds in acrylics and oils so I am now going to try using pan pastels. Thank you for showing us the video.

Hi Jason you are amazing!!!! Please can you tell me the name of your white pencil please as I have 3 different ones that I bought from amazon they don’t work wen I try to shade it goes grey 😢 please help!!!!
I’m working on the Patreon version of the fox and I’m using pan pastels, but having a hard time getting them laid down. I’m thinking I’m not putting enough on my sponge because I get a heavy mark when I initially touch the paper, but as I move the sponge, it immediately lightens up and I can’t seem to blend that initial dark mark in. I guess I’m afraid of getting too much on initially.
I had to laugh every time you said “you really don’t need a massive set of PanPastels” because I just ordered the big set, I think its 80 colors, and I can’t wait for it to get here so I can start working with them. I’m floored at how real the lemur looks, phenomenal!

Excellent tutorial, though you are a bit harsh on ingres paper. It has it's place and it's superb for that.

Does mixin the pan pastels work like mixing paint on a pallet?
much more than it does with regular pastels , I do it to adjust colours a bit :)

When using a photo, sometimes I can’t see which way the fur is going. Should I just leave the spots colored but not add the fur in pencil?
Get a magnifying glass so u can look closer to see the hairs

Can any coloured pencil be used over the pans?
They can! Lachri Fine Art has some vids demonstrating that. You'll want Faber Castell Polychromos for it, thought.
Do the pan pastels work well with Uart sanded paper?
It will certainly rip the soft tool (little spades) to pieces.
