Head unit wiring harness adapters so worth it and a massive time saver. When I bought my impreza (not a wrx sadly) in 2010, the first thing I did was change the stereo so I could get my sub in there. I had always previously cut and soldered directly to the existing wiring, but since it was new, I thought I would splurge the $60 or so for the the subaru - iso and iso - Alpine wiring. Best $60 I spent. Took less than 45 minutes to completely replace everything and not a single bit of solder was needed. 8 years later I upgraded to a different Alpine unit with bluetooth, the plug was still the same, so super easy upgrade again.
Lucky you. I have a Mitsubishi Delica D5 (JDM) which came with a Harmon Kardon sound system. It conveniently does not have phone connectivity. An adapter kit to allow another system to hook up to the factory wiring is NZ$899 and that doesn't include a new head unit
Hope you guys find this useful. I'm A diesel mechanic and have worked on hundreds of hiluxes and 1KD's in general. One of the biggest killers of this engine is the size of the mesh on the oil pick up in the sump. It seems to be finer than most other cars leaving it susceptible to oil starvation as it builds up with sludge way easier than most other engines. if not serviced enough with quality oil the pressure will drop and It will go bang. Another issue is injector seals leaking combustion into the head causing excessive carbon in the oil. You will have A considerable amount of blow by due to the higher crank case preassure if the injector seals fail. You can look up the sump plug with A torch and see the pick up and clean it with brake cleaner without even pulling the sump off. The injectors them selves also have issues causes by lack of servicing or inadequate filtration if the engine rattles on cold start up its usually injectors on their last legs. Hope it's usefull. Keep the sick content coming.
Of course i love the nuggets but Im absolutely loving the addition of the new workshop and seeing it put to use doing maintenance on regular cars. The new content is killing it!
Great 4x4 guys. I really important thing to maintain with this engine to avoid catastrophic failure. The injector seats tend to weep which results in black crusty bits going into the oil and blocking the oil pickup strainer. Engine then starves for oil with the first point it stops oiling is the underside of the pistons. The pistons will overheat and you can guess the rest. Replace those injector seats and the oil pickup strainer asap and each 100,000km after that. It’s definitely your cheapest option and so easy
Must look in to injectors thay will be flogged out bad but good job boys loving the 4x4 shows 👍🍻 if you end up doing it please show how it's done it will be so cool 😎
Great job guys, worked for Toyota for some years and particularly being from Africa we pretty much did Hiluxs and land cruisers all day everyday, just something to note on those 1kd-ftvs particularly with that age just best to change the injectors every 150 000kms they have issues, another fun thing that happens is the actuator for the turbo the bearings seize and you get a lack of power and you end up just changing the actuator, also that build of crap in the manifold is from the egr common job this side of the world
Insurance companies still quote the market value of a Hilux at 12-16k. I told if em if they could find one for that price they'd be laughing, let alone most people putting that much on them in mods anyway
@@playwme3 globally the same problem. The Hilux’s American cousin, the Tacoma, sell for obscene money these days. Even a base 4 cylinder SR Tacoma go above $30k USD! For me, I wanted a V6 3rd gen but even working for a dealership, employee pricing on these no longer exists….
I’d highly recommend throwing a brand new set of genuine injectors at it, fuel pipes, injector seats, MAP sensor filter, fuel rail gaskets, the whole works. If they’re never been done they’d be absolutely hammered. I’d advise not to install a catch can as they can mess with valve clearances. If you want to keep the egr clean a restriction plate with a 7mm hole is the way the go seems to be a legal grey area. Also make sure you’ve got the long suction control valve, not the short one as they can cause a lot of issues with stalling etc. Main thing is to make sure you get brand new genuine injectors x4 as remanufactured ones can cause issues. Injectors are the main cause of wrong combustion which is what causes these engines to crack pistons. Chips and tunes will cause wrong combustion and crack pistons prematurely too. Best to play it safe… a new long motor isn’t cheap. As other people have commented checking the oil pickup screen every service is a good way to tell if you have leaking injector seats (blow by). Hope this helps.
Doing the timing belt without replacing the waterpump on a half milly Hilux seems interesting. The 2 times I've seen a lift fail were while lifting a vehicle and thankfully the mechanic was not holding the saftey so it only dropped a few inches onto the locks. Anyway, enjoy the new shop! You guys are the tits pajamas
This is exactly what I was going to say. I have seen hundreds of cars being lifted and the mechanics always let the teeth click to make sure that the safety mechanism is actually working.
Also, you want to give the car a good shake after getting it just off the ground, to make sure it's stable. A fall from a few inches isn't nearly as bad as 6'.
we once had a lift engineer do the periodic inspections of one of our lifts where i worked, and he RECOMMENDED holding the safety to prevent excessive wear on the locking lugs. although for a DIY ramp, rather than one that goes up and down all day every day, its possibly less of an issue.
At 17:18, not sure if Marty installed a new caliper, or had just painted the caliper. When removing the calipers, sometimes air gets into the ABS module. You'll need a scan tool or jumpers-to-pins to cycle the ABS module to get the air out. The racer method, is to find a field, and to some hard stoppies to activate the ABS system. A few activations does it well, then re-bleed, and good to go.
Quite honestly, all the other four wheel drive channels sold out to that car magazine. So, by default, being the last legit four wheel drive channel on youtube that hasn't sold out yet... This is the best one.
So happy to see a Hilux on the channel. I’ve got a 1995 3rd gen Surf here in the uk, I bought it 3 years ago for just under £3k with 80,000 miles on the clock. When I took it for a service my mechanic said he was amazed at how clean it was and how healthy the engine was for such an old car which to be honest is barely broken in. Certainly my favourite vehicle I’ve own as it just does everything.
I bought a 2008 hilux sr5 in august 2020, dual cab 3.0 diesel with only 160,000KM for $18,000. I was offered $35,000 the other day. But I love my Hilux, I probs wont ever sell it :)
They'll probably want to fly under the radar with it and just blend in with all the other tradie ute's so nobody tails them back to the garage and makes a goose of themselves.
Hi, I'm a Power Steering specialist. Just a note on the black steering fluid. On vehicles that have a steering pump that runs off the timing gear (Usually Diesels), black fluid shows that engine oil is getting into the steering system via a worn out front seal/shaft, the steering fluid can also leak into the engine. If you find the Hilux's steering fluid goes black again, I would get the pump rebuilt or replace it. Enjoy your new "shop ute".
another thing to do my mechanic's teacher always said to do was as soon as the wheels are off the ground give the car a light shove from a couple directions (about as much force as you could reasonably apply while working on a vehicle). if it falls while it's up 6 inches then it could have fallen 10 feet on top of you. Also always lock the hoist arms always lock the hoist arms and always lock the hoist arms
Another way to (mostly) flush the power steering fluid is to pull off the return line on the reservoir and feed it into a container, topping up the fluid as you cycle the steering left and right. Doing it this way means you aren't going to contaminate the new fluid with the old fluid.
make sure to change injector seals/copper washers. know to drip fuel into oil which blocks the pickup resulting in low oil pressure. Toyota said every 40k to service those seals rather then warranty all the dead motors.
@@Neishy4AGTE You have to remove the valve cover, injectors pipes and pull the injectors out, the copper seat is located between the nozzle at the base of the injector but as i said if u have to go in, then change the injectors and put new squirters in and new injector pipes makes no sense to risk contamination only to put back on the old crusty shit
It is awesome seeing a Hilux on your channel! I have an 1985 Toyota pickup and a 2007 Tacoma and love driving them both! It will be a great shop truck and off-roading rig.

Just so your aware, there are rear door speakers but they aren’t wired up they stop at the front footwells each side so you need to run a wire from the head unit to there. Also there is a backseat mod so you can actually fold it down 👌🏻

Hey, it's a Hilux. Give it some love, and before you know, it will be towing that Pajero they bought to replace it to the workshop to be fixed... again and again. 21:00 Marty: "Let's check if the stereo works." Moog: "Ok." *turns the song on, starts jamming out* "Yep, suspension's good."

I love the fact that they washed over the details of the intake manifold clean out. Was about 2 minutes on camera. Actual job time is around 4 hours. Plus around 12 to 15 hours for the manifold and associated parts sitting in the parts washer or hot tank.
@@Jacobtheunwise OK if you are doing that job on your own vehicle. But in a professional situation I just give it to my engine shop and let them do it. Then I can get on with something else. And plus the fumes and residue is toxic. OK for a one off but when you do it for a living repeat exposure isn't too good for you.
@@aaronfischer7199 you realize mcms whole thing is diy right? For easy jobs like that you're wasting your money. Took me 2 hours and a blowtorch and flathead. Not to mention most places just put the intake cleaner shit through it and never take the intake off
@@Jacobtheunwise good evening. It's not just about the day aspect of playing or "fixing " common rail diesel. There is so many aspects of repairing it correctly. D4d engines have many issues. While it's apart and doing an intake clean. You "might" as well repair or service the following articles. Look up the tsb for injectors, via chassis no. Replace all injector seals including a re seat of serviceable. Replace suction control valve. Clean pump pick up screen. Re program of any replacement injector. Replace engine oil and filter. Then fire it up. Do a small quantity injector amount adjustment. And is this in the reality of some one who is in the scope of "diy". All good if you want cracked pistons. I've done this for too many years. And if my customers don't care to listen to my recommendations it's up to them.
I've been meaning to ask to do a Hilux build since you guys are the best 4x4 channel now! Just got my catalytic converters stolen off my Tacoma but feeling a little better seeing this upload. Can't wait for the lift!
Amazing to see the change in Moog over the years. Before if anyone left absolutely any grot in the car he would lick it or try and eat it, but an unopened bag of skittles.....No!
Coming from a prior autoelectrical job, I was most suprised the radio loom wasn't a fire hazard shit storm of 12 different people putting a headunit in it. The missing and finger tight bolts had me going "here we go"
I'm pretty sure you don't have to run the engine to flush power steering. You can attach a collection bottle to the return that flows into the reservoir and keep topping up while cycling the steering from lock to lock. This way you can completely replace the old fluid instead of just mixing in some new.
Running the engine will make this so much easier, was taught at TAFE to have the motor running. Also makes sense that on a belt driven system, the power steer pump will only work and pump oil when the motor is running, different for electric systems which you may be thinking of
@@cohenluxford4171 What I mean is that just turning the wheel lock to lock will pump it through. This goes for mechanical systems like this. The point is that if you use a separate collection bottle and dont run the return to the reservoir you don't just mix in new fluid but replace it. And since the engine isn't running you dont risk the pump running dry. EDIT: Just to clarify. I'm not trying to be a keyboard warrior saying that everyone is doing it wrong but just to point out that there is another perhaps an even neater way of doing it.
Had a 4runner (basically a wagon version of a hilux), loved that thing. Had an LSD and the thing was unstoppable off-road with very little mods, just a 2" lift and 33" tyres. it was also my favourite vehicle for city driving as it was one of the easiest cars I have owned for that type of thing. visibility was excellent, so was the turning circle. so easy to park. still regret selling it.

Sick turbo diesel boys, welcome to the gang. First time you have to put it in low and pull something heavy, you'll get it until enjoy hilux life. *CHEAP TURBO DISEL INSURANCE* : A catchcan on crankcase gas return line and a prefilter before your factory fuel filter with a lower micron rating than the factory one and a built in water seperator. Catchcan will keep that intake a lot cleaner for a lot longer, and the fuel filter will save you doing an injector or the whole rail because of contaiminated fuel.
I like to listen to this show on my way to work in the mornings and missed the part where you started it. It was just quite enough that I had to pause it because I thought my subaru was knocking haha.
Someone may have already said this, but an oil catch can helps to reduce the amount of oil vapour mixing with the EGR soot. That's what makes the gunk that gums up the intake manifold etc.
Here is a tip. There is no need to line up timing marks to change the timing belt. Just use a paint pen to mark the belt and gears. Transfer those marks onto the new belt (same number of “teeth” on the belt) and install new belt.
A good trick for changing timing belts, cut the old belt all the way around it and remove half of the belt then slip the new belt half way on. Once the new belt is halfway on cut off the rest of the old belt and then slide the new belt the rest of the way on. This is a very quick and easy way to ensure everything remains lined up without all the messing around or risk that something gets moved.
Top tip. Pull the lower control arms. I'd almost guarantee you'll need to change the lower bushes in the struts (or whole strut) and if it hasn't been looked after the lower bushes crush and then the strut punches through the control arm. You need to weld them back up and change the bushes. I've worked on hundred on these and most of these need lower strut bushes.
It's always a trip seeing such an old and well used vehicle with so little rust. I live in Minnesota in America, and we heavily use salt on our roads even though the frigid winters usually overpower the salt. Making the salt useless for all but rusting the hell outta our undercarriage.
I just bought a BA tonner ute with 565k on it and I’m doing the same as you guys pretty much. Massive clean inside, all fluid change, new pads and rotors all round, throwing some LED lights onto it and upgrading the stereo and some bits inside so it looks pretty and it’s a nicer place to be. I have a company car so my personal car isn’t driven heaps and every single time I’ve sold a ute I’ve regretted it so I think I’ll just really sort this thing out, keep it forever and if I have to I’ll throw in another Barra in a million more Km. @Nathan Hepple for sure dude, backbone of Africa!
Loving the new space guys, (especially growing from the Hornsby driveways) awesome to see how you guys have grown love the videos !
Love to see a video about how to puting a snorkel on this car.
@@andreoliveira9318 there are hundreds of other videos from other creators which already exist showing this process
@@nuggetzor but we want to see how MCM do the snorkel hahaha
@21:00, is why we love your channel.
You guys are so fun to keep up with.
Every garage should have a CAR LIFT
You shouldn't hold the safety handle open when lifting just incase it fails on the way up.
Also I find the sound the locks make as its going up satisfying
@@JunaidJDM I’ve been using a lift at work all day everyday and the first click always startles me.
another thing to do my mechanic's teacher always said to do was as soon as the wheels are off the ground give the car a light shove from a couple directions (about as much force as you could reasonably apply while working on a vehicle). if it falls while it's up 6 inches then it could have fallen 10 feet on top of you.
Also always lock the hoist arms
always lock the hoist arms
and always lock the hoist arms
Another way to (mostly) flush the power steering fluid is to pull off the return line on the reservoir and feed it into a container, topping up the fluid as you cycle the steering left and right. Doing it this way means you aren't going to contaminate the new fluid with the old fluid.
make sure to change injector seals/copper washers. know to drip fuel into oil which blocks the pickup resulting in low oil pressure. Toyota said every 40k to service those seals rather then warranty all the dead motors.
If you are doing that and its over 100k mileage just change the injectors and injector pipea
That's alot of diesel that has been leaking already
How do you service the injector seals? You mean just replace? Is it a big job?
@@Neishy4AGTE You have to remove the valve cover, injectors pipes and pull the injectors out, the copper seat is located between the nozzle at the base of the injector but as i said if u have to go in, then change the injectors and put new squirters in and new injector pipes makes no sense to risk contamination only to put back on the old crusty shit
Injectors would be rooted change em and use new fuel pipes and use genuine ones
It is awesome seeing a Hilux on your channel! I have an 1985 Toyota pickup and a 2007 Tacoma and love driving them both! It will be a great shop truck and off-roading rig.
Not gonna lie…would love to see the 4wd24/7 team modifying and going for laps on a racetrack with you and you guys going on a trip with them and getting dirty on one of their tracks!
They wouldn't do it unless there was 20 minutes of sponsors included , kinda the whole reason mcm is making fun of them
They gotta do it with Sam over at built not bought. They both where in the supercheap commercial so atleast they share sponsors

Shout out to Ryobi for sponsoring MCM. Good stuff, good prices, good support for great content creators.
Just so your aware, there are rear door speakers but they aren’t wired up they stop at the front footwells each side so you need to run a wire from the head unit to there. Also there is a backseat mod so you can actually fold it down 👌🏻
I rate the new guy to MCM is a South African 🇿🇦
Hulix bakkies are very popular in South Africa as well. People use them for almost EVERYTHING.
Agreed, they are indeed one of the best selling vehicles here.
Lekker strong Souf Afrikan accent! 🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
Saffas , we love our bakkies, our 2005 Lux has 840000km on and still pulls tractors around the farm
OMG Paulie!!!!! I missed Tony Grieg commentating the cricket, but here we have a new deeper voiced version commentating the mechanical issues on the best 4WD show on the planet! I just wish he used a key to check the tread-depth of the tyres.

Exactly what I would expect from the greatest 4x4 channel on UA-cam!
Nic weird fellas!
So cool to see a South African 🇿🇦 mechanic.
I love the fact that they washed over the details of the intake manifold clean out. Was about 2 minutes on camera. Actual job time is around 4 hours. Plus around 12 to 15 hours for the manifold and associated parts sitting in the parts washer or hot tank.
You can do the intake clean super easy with a blowtorch it makes the stuff come off super quickly, had to do that with my triton
Not to mention most places just put the intake cleaner shit through it and never take the intake off
It was a 27 minute long video. What did you expect? A 13 hour special on cleaning the intake manifold?

I thought he sounded SA and not just Aussie 😆 glad that my accent ears aren't just hearing things!
Yeah I wanted to say he sounds like a saffa! Great for him, wish I could get out of here
Coming from a prior autoelectrical job, I was most suprised the radio loom wasn't a fire hazard shit storm of 12 different people putting a headunit in it. The missing and finger tight bolts had me going "here we go"
Last car I bought had two cut and tape jobs on the headunit wiring, it was incredible. Ended up crimping on a DT connector.
Love your guys stuff. Continue to impress. Many years later after even buying some merch still watching 😊
The key point here is Toyotas use Dexron ATF not PSF.
I got to say, I don't know if it's been said before but your sound eq is the best on any UA-cam channel by miles/kilometers
Pauly is my new favourite person. "So how much did you pay for this five grand ute?"

We get 4 runners here in new zealand and australia too sometimes there badged as a toyota hilux surf
Only bad thing is the surf and 4 runner had the lower output engine options only

looked at the ecotec swap, can be had pretty cheap if you buy an old rolled Hilux for the parts, but had a mate that had one and it absolutely drank fuel, way worse than the 14-18L/100k my 3vz-fe drank.

Basically the best 4x4 Show EVER

I like to listen to this show on my way to work in the mornings and missed the part where you started it. It was just quite enough that I had to pause it because I thought my subaru was knocking haha.
As someone who has a 2000 Ford F350 with a 7.3 diesel. Old oil burners will have leaks especially higher mileage ones, mine has 753,652 miles on it.
Someone may have already said this, but an oil catch can helps to reduce the amount of oil vapour mixing with the EGR soot. That's what makes the gunk that gums up the intake manifold etc.
Yessssssss! Paulie is Safa, good to see a South African running the show in Aus.
Is Paulie a South African ? If he is then you guys are sorted !! He will always make a plan and get it right 🤣

So awesome that you guys got Vin Diesel on the show... very fitting :D
Aint a true 4x4 channel without a hydrate sesh!
Love Marty rocking out during the jam session!
Life is good.
