  • Trans am History and test driving this 1970 Z28 Camaro Trans Am SCCA race car. For more vintage car content check out the muscle car shootout review: • The Complete Story Of ... This Trans Am series race car campaigned in the 1971 and 1972 seasons with a top 5 and top 10 finishes. The car is eligible for monterey Trans Am historics, as it raced in its current Sunoco Camaro livery. A great sounding car with a race preped small block 305ci with a Muncie M21 4-speed transmission.
    This 1970 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 was initially purchased by Don Duncan from Nurse Chevrolet in Toronto, Canada. Don had traded his 1968 Corvette for this Camaro with the intention of having it prepared for racing in Trans Am. He had enlisted John Todds of TODCO Racing to build his Z28 into an SCCA Trans-Am legal race car.
    Now with a fully raced prepared car, they needed a competitive driver that could bring home some silverware. Canadian race car driver Dick Brown had been looking for a ride for the 1971 Trans Am season but had a hard time convincing local Canadian sponsors to invest in an American based Trans Am series. Prior to the 1971 Trans-Am season, had been trying to find the funds together to get a seat in a Bud Moore Engineering Mustang. He needed to raise to $75,000 to race a Bud Moore Mustang as the #2 team car to Parnelli Jones. Unfortunately, in the end he came up short by about $25,000.00. Dick then got a call from John Todds who asked him to drive this Camaro in the 1971 season. Dick agreed and this Camaro was raced in the 1971 Trans-Am series as a Todco Racing entry. The 1971 season proved to be tough as the car incurred many technical difficulties resulting in multiple DNFs. ,
    For 1972, the car received a fresh new look painted Sunoco Blue and ran under the banner of Sunoco of Canada, Gagnon Spring, and Duncan Chevrolet. During the 1972 SCCA Trans-Am season, this car had much better success than the year prior. In the four SCCA Trans-Am events contested, this car’s best finishes were an impressive 5th place finish at the Road America Trans-Am, and a 6th place at Watkins Glen. Dick Brown also won the Mayor’s Cup Race at the 1972 Molson Grand Prix/Trois Rivieres weekend in this car.

    Great video, my friend had a 73 type LT, 350 4spd. Great body style. Electric cars may be faster and the future of automotive transportation but they will NEVER be cooler than these classics.

    I was 17 in 1970. In 74 I bought a 68 Z/28 for $3,000. My current Z/28 is a 70 4 speed with custom cloth interior etc, wood grain on dash, doors and console. I purchased in 1981 from the original owner. Couple yrs ago I ran into him During Autofest Poker Run in Whitby while having lunch on the outside patio. I saw a guy creeping around my car for 20 min. About 10 min later he comes up beside me. We chatted. He asked if the cars for sale. Of course its not. I told him a friend of mine owns 2 70 Z/28 he could buy from. He said, “ I want my car”. No offers were discussed which wouldn’t matter anyways.

      In 1973 I purchased my first car. A used 1970 Mach 1 for $2500. I still often think about that car.

    In 1970 I bought a Hugger Orange Camaro Z/28 brand new, off the showroom floor, for $4,000. It was a beautiful monster. I was nineteen. I loved it. I miss it. I'm glad I survived it. Thanks for a great video!

      Lucky you ! Was 2 back then..at 19 I bought a fresh frame up resto of a 70Z citrus green/green cloth car was flawless
      Bought it from a guy I worked for (restored 1 gen camaros C2s) for 8500 late 80s. Wanted 15k but could NOT sell anyone a green car...so much for the super rare bit.
      Was my primary daily for many yrs. Ported heads more aggressive solid lifter cam still remember the way it drove, fav overall driving muscle car. Impound yard destroyed and stripped a bunch of parts off...had to sell. Still got 8500 not a nick on it.
      WHy guys are afraid to drive "perfect" cars is lame.

    I don't need to compete in the races. I don't need a legitimate race car from the period. I just want a solid car built in the spirit of Trans Am racing to drive and enjoy. No racing paint scheme. No roll cage. Just a good, fun driver with good power and handling

      Destroked 350 LT1 to 305 cid for Trans Am racing

    • @mikeeaton9822
      @mikeeaton9822 2 місяці тому

      @GenXBiker73 thanks I was curious because the 305 was such a dog. I think the chevy 302 that sweet hi-revving monster should have been used.

      @@mikeeaton9822- a destroyed LT1 is essentially the same engine as the DZ 302. The engines in the Trans Am race cars were far from stock however and made well over 500 HP

      1:49 Trans Am class rules were actually 305 ci. So there was room for rebuilds where a slight overbore was in order.

      No we just don't like the fact that America and Canada have a deep shared automotive history that you Yanks fail too often to recognize. CAN-AM racing , SCCA Trans Am Racing. That 2nd Gen Camaro was probably built in Quebec to begin with. Every Charger/Hellcat/Challenger in the last 20 years was birthed pretty close to where this video was filmed. Oh yeah, Americas super car, the Ford GT, is designed and built in Toronto too.
