    Want to thank you for doing a review the RIGHT way and playing the same thing with just the guitar then again with each pedal. Hate when someone TRIES to do a comparison by playing some blues or jazz riffs on the first item then turns around and starts pounding power chords as hard and fast as they can ands says you can really hear/tell the difference.

    Great review! I love that you used bypass for each riff before hearing the riffs on each pedal.

    This has helped a lot, I have always used BOSS Me- pedals, i am putting my first individual pedal board together and was shocked at the prices. I kept seeing these joyo and mooer pedals and this has helped me see that you are not necessarily getting your money's worth when you buy a pedal that is more than twice as much, Thank you so much!

      I'm selling my ME-50 right now. It was pretty nice except for the fact that you can't run the delay/reverb/mod at the same time as the OD. You put it as the fx loop or in front of the amp which sucks.

    • @Crunchifyable2
      @Crunchifyable2 9 років тому +2

      My first pedal board is full of joyo pedals and joyo jp-02 power supply. They sound good in general, but construction seems an issue - the jacks seem to wear out easily, and I hear many reports of switches failing. I recommend em, just be sure to put a quality pedal in the first in the chain and last in the chain as a buffer and as something to take the stress of cable changes.

    • @gordontubbs
      @gordontubbs 9 років тому

      I'm a big fan of the ME-80 because it's a one stop shop for all your FX needs, but after so many years of playing through it, I've found it to be very digital, compressed, and less "pure" than conventional pedals. Putting together a specialized pedalboard can be expensive, as you can easily spend hundreds of bucks on just getting essentials (a board, power supply, cables, volume pedal, tuner). That's why I just decided to go simple with a Boss BCB-30, loaded with a TU-3, GE-7 (which can be utilized as a drive pedal), and NS-2. It gets the job done every time.

      If your using the joyo as a boost like I do for stacking other overdrive pedals or fuzz pedals than joyo is perfect. But I do think the Ibanez ts9 and 808 sound smoother if your low gain player. And worth the money if it's great tone your after.

    I've used joyo pedals for years and have yet to have one fry on me. I think the idea that the tubescreamer "holds its value" is also up to interpretation. If you paid 40 for a joyo ( I paid 30) and sold it for 20, you've "lost" 20 bucks. If you buy the Ibanez for 100 and sell it for 60, you've lost 40 bucks....I think if you blind test the 2 you will find the Joyo gets just as many votes. People are influenced by the name on the pedal or the headstock.

      George Suarez Exactly right. I've had the Joyo for about 6 years and it works just fine. I don't care about name brand pedals. I had an original Zvex loop junky that was cool and unique but not worth the $400 I spent on it. That was my first and last boutique pedal!

    I used to keep a Joyo TS clone in my line, great pedal at the time. It's still in working condition on the guy I sold it to's pedal board, and I bought it preowned myself. 4+ years of use shows these things can have a lot of longevity.

  • @thisdyingsoul76
    @thisdyingsoul76 8 років тому +27

    There is a difference, for sure. I preferred the Joyo to be honest. Since I'm most likely to use it as a boost on a brighter guitar, the extra warmth is a plus.

    • @thisdyingsoul76
      @thisdyingsoul76 8 років тому

      I could be wrong since I don't have an original TS to compare it to, but I think the Joyo has more output for boosting too and true bypass is a nice touch. I have plenty of pedals with buffers that are far better than the ones Ibanez puts in the TS's and it's good to have a mix of buffers and true bypass on a pedal board.

      For warmth id go for the Soul Food, so thick a creamy compared to these. I do also have this Joyo and its much better for sharp cutting tone.

    • @thisdyingsoul76
      @thisdyingsoul76 7 років тому

      +Stinkfist2000 Funny you mention using the Joyo for cutting tones. I recently has a huge sell off of a lot of my gear and got a few new pedals including an 808 clone voiced with a wider mid bump and more bass. I typically use it for warmer tones with my brighter guitars and the Joyo to get more cutting tone with my darker sounding guitars. I'm also adding a dual pedal that is actually a part for part clone of 2 different circuits... Right side is a Klone and Left side is a King of Tone (or Prince of Tone since it's only one side). I can't wait to hear how all this unobtainium interacts with the rest of my rig.

  • @3-EX-0
    @3-EX-0 4 роки тому

    I actually record and play live with Joyo Vintage OD and Crunch Distortion. Both are worth it in my opinion. I do strongly lead to using a compressor pedal on both just because they have a habit of hurting your sustain from the signal break up. I like the OD because if you do enough playing with your amp, and the pedal you can get the effect I love where your amp sounds like it is on the verge of popping where it sounds clean but at the same time distorted. I love using it on playing whole cords, power cords, and arpeggios. My only complaint with the Joyo Overdrive is when you pick playing lighter does not limit the OD compared to turning down the volume. But that is where I use the Vintage Danelectro Pastrami OD pedal. I have owned that since 1999, it is beat to hell and back, but that pedal if they still made them I would have bought another 2 or 3 of them to keep on my pedal board for a second OD. I completely endorse Joyo's OD and Distortion, and plan on buying more of their pedals to see how they sound as well.

    Kennis, dude this is a great demo, irrespective of the pedals you did a great sampling of diff styles to really get a sense of the multi-dimensional nature of the pedal. To my ears the TS9 is more transparent and less "effected" than the joyo, which interferes with the tone more, esp noticeable on the cleaner stuff. When I think TS9 or "overdrive" I picture what the joyo sounds like, hearing them side by side I think the TS is less "colorful", but it's overtones seem more "headroomey" if that makes any sense.

    Great video thank you. I have had tube screamers even a modded version and never really liked them all that much. I liked the sound of the Joyo better but the difference was minute to my ears. I think if you messed with the tone on these guys you could get them to sound almost identical. That being said I would probably get the Joyo if I was to buy a tube screamer type pedal. Well done.

  • @anthonymichaelhall8432
    @anthonymichaelhall8432 7 років тому

    Great video!!! Thank you for delivering on such a long awaited shoot out! Now, for my honest opinion of the pedals. considering the rule of return on investment, if you play the Joyo say 3 times a week, I think we can agree that is worth 40 dollars for a year's worth of use. Whereas the Ibanez is more expensive, but those 80s are still around because it's robust construction. Also, the jacks can be swapped out in the Joyo for extended life relatively easily with a soldering iron and basic knowledge. One might even be able to drop in a JRC chip in the Joyo if it allows for such. However, from what I heard, the Joyo sounds reallllllly close to the Ibanez already. All in all, for what it does, the Joyo would be the choice for people in a pinch, beginning musicians, or even seasoned players looking for something different. Also makes for a nice gift for a friend who is a player. Two thumbs up. Cheers.

    I've had this pedal for a while and it sounds good. I also have the ultimate drive which is a decent ocd clone, or it was until the cat was sick on it! Now it's a little weird ... Both were played on a fender telecaster through a laney lc 30 tube amp.

  • @jamessmith84240

    I got one of these Joyo pedals. My band plays rock / blues stuff and have to say I don't know how I lived without it. I literally play with it on all the time at gigs. My amp is only an old Marshall VS100 which does not have the best clean channel. Hence I set the Joyo pedal to quite low drive but higher volume. Then on my amp I turn down some of the gain on crunch / lead channels from how they would be normally. It works wonders on the clean channel and really gives it some balls while making the crunch and lead channels sing. Most value for money you can get for £25!

  • @sirnatanielson

    Tough call. Certain phrases I liked the tone of the Ts better (clearer and crisper), but other phrases the Joyo sounded a bit ballsier and I guess warm, which I preferred at times. Close call. If I'm in the market for an OD again, i might check out the Joyo finally. I dig the cheaper clone pedals (Donner, Caline, etc), so I might have to keep playing with them as I go! Thanks for this video!

  • @PippPriss
    @PippPriss 7 років тому

    One thing I'd like to add is that Pots can have tolerances up to 20 %. So if two pedals have the same settings and one sounds "brighter", but having the same gain structure etc., you know where it comes from.

  • @ZappaBlues
    @ZappaBlues 10 років тому

    I agree with your thoughts. The TS9 was a touch clearer and the Joyo a bit warmer. I have an 80s TS9, sounds good, but it is at point where I have a to stomp on it lie elephant to get it to turn on/off. I also have a Joyo Ultimate Drive that I got for $25 Cdn. used, I'm very amazed at the sound. I would replace the TS0 with vintage OD if I found a used on for the same price as the Ultimate since I only noodle around and have limited funds..

    I have the JOYO Vintage Overdrive and the Ibanez TS-808. I actually use them together on a board, going into a Vox AC30 just set to breaking up slightly. They make humbuckers sing very nicely, but with single coils on a Tele I honestly find the sound a bit brittle. Am going to experiment with something that sucks less bass from my signal.

    I've been a joyo guy for 10 years at this point. living in the world of vintage and boutique handwired pedals that cost hundreds of dollars joyo/HB has been behind the scenes pumping out affordable pedals that last (around a decade at this point with no issues) and it's nice to have an option of something that's affordable but actually sounds good.
    play a joyo on a studio recording and tell a collector you're playing whatever it's emulating -- you're going to fool 99% of them for a third (or less) of the price.

    To be Blunt both sounded great, would be interesting on what the tone control did with respect to the mid range. Or how well does it sound in the mix live and recorded. Some things the Joyo sounded better and other things sounded better on the Tube screamer in this video.

  • @wklorenzino
    @wklorenzino 6 років тому

    I have some Joyo pedals and you get what you pay for. They sound good but sometimes are hard to dial in what you are looking for. I think the big difference I see in this video is the Joyo sounds muddy at certain points. One big test of a overdrive is to see how it responds to your picking. The more aggressive your picking the more drive it should add. That is my opinion of why the TS9 is better; it responds more to your playing. I could see the JOYO as being a great addition to color your amps overdrive during solos. It sounds like it add a lot of mids which is good for live situations.

    • @thisdyingsoul76
      @thisdyingsoul76 8 років тому +4

      I believe it's a clone of the TS-808, which might account for at least some of the difference in its sound in this comparison video. I have been buying a lot of the Chinese clones lately from Joyo, Caline and a few other brands and while the build quality on the originals is better and the sound is a bit different; they get you in the ballpark of the sound those pedals are known for. I feel they're worth checking out before shelling out big bucks on the originals. Who knows, you might actually prefer the difference in the sound of the clone. As for build quality; you can afford a second as a backup and still pay less than for one of the original pedals they're based on if you're gigging with them. As the suspect switches and jacks fail, just have them replaced with better quality parts. I doubt the parts that make up the actual circuit itself will fail much faster than the originals - some high priced pedals actually get their sound from cheap parts in key places in the circuit anyway.

  • @jordanpene5279

    The ts9 retained the original tone of the amp much better, adding overdrive without taking away too much of the amps tone. That's one thing i like when switching from clean to overdrive is for it to sound like its from the same amplifier. The Joyo has a cool tone of its own though, but would suck in a live situation where your clean tone sounds nice and full but when you switch your pedal on its sounds weak in comparison.

    my personal opinion? it'll all depends upon what type of music you are playing,it's a copy,and personally,i didn't watch your vid, i just listened, sounds the same though,with some bit of a difference,ibanez is ibanez,no argue on that one, i think though that it will also depend on your set up/pedalboard,i just hope you can make a vid of these pedals in action, you know in a full band and just for when boosting the natural od of an amp, great vid!

    Would've liked if you went back to clean between each pedal for a better relative tone comparison, clean to overdrive on each pedal instead of clean to overdrive to other overdrive... Thanks

    I liked the Joyo enough to buy it over the Ibanez, and I am an Ibanez fan. The Joyo just had more low end and a richer mid. It did lack clarity in the higher end, but if you want chirpy sounding highs, just play a Strat :) I dig this pedal and am starting to see value in a lot of their pedals. If they die in a few years, you're out thirty five bucks, big deal. I buy most of mine used, anyway, so I don't exactly like paying 200 bucks for effects in the first place.

    The tone knob sweep is better on the TS9 in my experience. But both pedals are fun to play.

    I believe that the Joyo is worth it. The difference is very little and for sure, saving 60 bucks and getting the same stuff, it is kinda worth to try it. Also it feels extra warmth . I think I'll buy it.

  • @nodrog5150

    purely speaking the ts 9 is more transparent at all settings but the joyo is still a good buy as its cheap and cheerful.... I've got both and I'm keeping both but if I was selling on in today's market I'd keep the ts9

    I've had the Joyo for 5 years & it's great.... why pay well over £100 when for £30 I can get the same sound... I don't care that it says Joyo & not Ibanez...! :-)

    The Ibanez Tube Screamer is more flavorful (a couple audible harmonics going on) and has that really tight single string- new string timbre, which is a major part of it's appeal, and a great contrast with the milky overdrive...the perfect combo entering an amp to be a foundation that helps eliminate any tube mud from occurring. Ultimately, if you examine the schematics of the Joyo versus the Ibanez you will more than likely see that the Ibanez has more going on.
    We have to remember that the Ibanez is tried and true on countless amp designs, even solid state and hybrids. The real battle would be in a band setting or 'Karaoke jam'.

  • @westernfilet

    The Joyo is way more muddy sounding, I feel. Might be able to EQ that out.... but for me, over time, that muddy sound would get annoying.
    Good demo though! Thanks!

      @patrickhodgen9933 8 років тому +1

      Yeah it sounds a little more muddy. I have one which I run with the drive at 10 o'clock and the tone around 3o'clock and the guitar really shines through quite nicely - I play with a Vox too which is pretty chimey anyhow. Great review by the way - really in depth!

      as far as a single button type pedal like mxr. not a lick of difference. i have the joyo and the only sgityy bit is the actual enclosure. the pots pcb and switch is just fine...
      and the joyo is not surface mounted... all components are replacable... if yiu wantetd to mess about with values this would be a great pedal.

    Just picked up the Joyo for 28.43, and if you tweak it a bit, its got a pretty darn good tone. I am happy with it! (esp for that price!)

      in the video, it only seems that the drive kicks in a bit more on the joyo at 12 oclock,. more clean at 12 on the Ibanez at that setting.. but tone wise, they seem pretty close.

    The JOYO seems brighter, like a BOSS Super OD to my ears. I like that as I prefer my BOSS SD1 to my TS9. The TS9 is a little dark for me. I guess for about $10 more you can have the BOSS pedal istead of the JOYO. Not that the JOYO is bad, but the BOSS is built for war.

      +Guitar Whores I guess most TS clones are made to more similar to the brighter TS808s, my Biyang OD-7 TS clone also sounds brighter than the TS9 I've compared to at the same settings.

    I thought the joyo had more low end and drive and that the Ibanez retained more of the original tone of the guitar. That being said, for $40 the joyo sounded fantastic. I use a digitech bad monkey and the tone is nearly identical to the ts9 (the ts9 has more midrange response)

  • @jonathanhandsmusic

    I agree with previous comment. The Joyo sounds better to me. They both are good, but the Joyo has a little fatter sound, and considering the cost difference I vote for the Vintage Overdrive.

    Hey Kennis, my name's Mike and I live in Europe do you know how much a TS9 costs here in Europe? 149 euros, that's about 165 bucks (USD). So here to have a TS9 is a luxury.

    I've got that Joyo. I never liked it, but afterser seeing this I might try it again.
    The Joyo at higher gain to me sounds creamier as the T's sounds grittier.
    At low gain the T's wins. Aloy smoother.

    TS9 sounds more like an actual tube but Joya sounds like a circuit trying to sound like a tube. Joya sounds more dirty but missed the quintessential spongy tube sound that the TS9 is so distinctive for. Joya still is a good value. The cult status of the TS9 is because of the way it responds harmonically and dynamically. Joya is cool but different, sounds more "digital" to my ear.

    as minor as the tone difference is on UA-cam I would buy the joyo and I'm broke so $60 less is a big factor even with China stuff is mostly made out of plastic. if you get the chance put both against a behringer vintage TO800 if you can get your hands on one, there $19 now and from when I heard a TO800 it wasn't too bad thanks for this review .
