Brilliant, no nonsense video......great explanation and a timely warning NOT to run low/out of engine oil !! Thank you, Akan....wish there were more mechanics around like you. Keep up the good work. Highly informative and entertaining. PS hope you don't need a windscreen for the scrapper ! Chris - Mondeo Mks 2 and 5 owner.
No Expense spared on cracking out a Brand New Wire Brush !!!!! hahahahaha Big End bearing have spun on the crankshaft and as you say, Fully Twated. Piston Skirts have a Teflon Coating on them and that still looks to be in good condition. Shows the engine was running well. Thanks for doing the video that I requested, appreciated. Always good to see what parts have failed etc and the extent of the damage caused. Solid information for future albeit that if it happens again it's straight in the bin.
Morning Alan. Cup of coffee on a Saturday morning watching your video. In my world its a great way to spend 40 mins being entertained and educated. Keep them coming.. I salute you sir. 👍 P.s lets hope no one noticed you didn't put another dust mask on to fit the exhaust box. Your secret is safe with me. Oh and they are in short supply so maybe you was just doing your bit to help 🤔
....tip for installing new Spark Plugs....smear of copper grease or similar on upper threads, then wind in using a length of garden hose, taking care not to cross - thread - and, do not overtighten as taper threads, Too many people overtighten, risking stripping threads in head. Best wishes, Alan........Chris. Always enjoy your vids.
love your vid mate wile since i stripped an engine right down to bore out to +40 and skim the crank shaft lol when i drove a black cab part time a new driver ripped a hole in a brand new Metrocab 3 £ 30,000 worth days old instead of stopping he kept on going it made it half a mile he got fierd lol
Really enjoy your videos - thank you.18:52 - hydraulic tappets? - not on this engine I don't think. Simple buckets that supposedly have to be checked every 50K, but don't usually need adjusting. Correct me if I'm wrong - it will save me a job !
hi, yes these are pre set tappets that you would check..if the valve clearance is wrong you would need a micrometer, work out what size you need and order new bucket/tappets the correct size you need but i don't know who ever checks them unless there is a running problem.
Oh my god, this gave me a flashback to 1999 when I worked at Quick fit and then ATS for a year or two. I can smell the break cleaner and WD40 and feel the gritty swarfega hand cleaner.
quick tip for you, if you loose the rubber bit out of the spark plug socket , use a bit of sponge and place it inside the socket and then remove the spark plug ;)
Good video... and give happy birthday from me to monica...and did you know that the 1st of may is a national hollyday in portugal, its the worker day! So if monica lived in here she dont work in her birthday. ..cheers from Portugal
Alan, I live about 40 minutes away from Kenosha-Snap-On tools hdq. Some of the later model 3/8" extension bars are lots more HD. Get yourself one of those new double 80 ratchets and smile
Nothing wrong with that at all as long as you don't apply it to the last 2 threads closest to the tip. It is standard practice on aircraft spark plugs. :)
05:38 (the exhaust bit). Here's my theory - for what it's worth . When you weld something (like the pipe to the box) , there is a Heat Affected Zone parallel to the weld. The steel gets heated into a temperature range that causes grain growth (the metal crystals grow larger in that zone at the expense of those around them). Resistance to fatigue depends on how coarse or fine grained the metal is - the bigger the metal crystals or grains, the faster/easier a fatigue crack can grow and the exhaust is subject to a lot of vibration.
On the subject of things being dropped in engines, first time I pulled the head off my first car (Imp) there were dings all over one piston and combustion chamber. Jammed in the inlet port was the culprit - a fuel line hose clip, less nut and bolt which had gone through the engine. And no, it wasn't me that had dropped it in the carb.
Years ago we would regrind the crank, rebore the cylinders, skim the head, reseat the valves or new ones, back then it worked out cheaper than another engine, with todays engines is this still valid or are they too expensive to repair, last time a bought pistons they were about £80 each, but the rebore was cheap, you would probable just source another engine, would that be cheaper or just quicker?
Hi Alan, how can I identify what piston number is? I have the same Mondeo 2.0 MK3, the 4 pistons have the same marks on the top of head, left side "C2" in the middle "R52C" AND the right side "EF" and one arrow pointing to the timing chain. I can also notice that on the inside, 2 of them have the number 6 and the other 2 have the 8. Thank you in Advance and greetings from Mexico.
A short length of say 6mm ID plastic tubing or hose fits tightly onto the top of the centre electrode and allows you to take the plug out after it has been loosened with the socket wrench. It also allows you to start the spark plug without cross=threading it when you re-fit it. :)
Hi Alan, great video as always! You took that engine apart so quickly. What is harder, removing the cylinder head and putting it back together, or disassembling the ventilation system and putting it back together? Say, on a Ford Mondeo Mk4
Funnily enough, talking about changing spark plugs on these engines, when i changed them on the fiesta st, i found so much muck and crap down by the plugs location, you need to thoroughly clean it all well before even removing them, but of a crap design.
🌟Love your videos. 🌟 Very informative and superb qualify. Very soon you will be like Chris fix. But is it any chance to do a video on a Mondeo 1.6 tdci. After the 2litre tdci ,the 1.6 it's a very common engine. Thanks in advance. Art.
Hallo from south africa i have a year 2000 ford ranger rode over a rock got a hole in the oil sump I drove 300 meters from where i hit the rock before i shut of the engine rpm was only 1500 rmp wil my engine got damaged from that ?
Do we know the exact cause here ? Did the owner neglect to put oil in entirely for a long time or was there another cause or a secondary cause ? I wonder as i see a sheer lack of oil in the sump. I ask as i want to know if this is common, its scary to think of all the small integral parts in an engine that can go wrong and it all looks like the engine is heavily reliant on good quality consistent oil maintenance. I am guessing also by the looks of it,if you do have a problem with the oil intake on a car then its not instantly detectable and once you know about it,it would usually be far too late, not only that but to replace these parts you need to strip the engine, and repairs after the fact are not cost effective due to secondary damage to the engine. A scary thought Thanks
the driver hit the alloy sump and cracked it....the oil was leaked over a period of time and the sump ran out of oil...the driver carried on driving until the engine seized
Alan - did that info I send you ref Mondeo Mk5 Steering arrive. Ford have agreed to reimburse me for the costs of parts and labor. Only catch is they can only refund via a Ford Dealer - wtaf.
hi chris, yes thanks i have received it, i will get around to making a vid on it, at the moment am struggling with replying to comments here on you tube lol, but yeah its a very interesting read...i will be in touch, thanks chris

I would not let anyone to mount my new spark plugs without using a torque wrench and screw them to proper torque. For some years I'm doing this job myself. I just know why..
Are you still doing MOTs the garages near me are struggling for work since the government give everyone an extra 6 mouths on MOTs daft idea just storing up problems 😷👍👌

Jesus that's bad. But other than the inlet manifold swirl flaps and running out of oil looks like a well engineered lump (albeit the fuel economy on them is crap). Still could be worse, could be a rover k series.
Rover K-Series are excellent engines and it was only after they decided to use the same 1100/1400 blocks for the 1600/1800 engines as well that the head gaskets became a problem and that was mostly to do with people who never bothered checking their coolant levels as these engines didn't have a lot of coolant in them and thus if the owners didn't check it regularly then it would cause the engine to overheat and then the gasket to fail. My mates dad still has the 2001 MG ZS 1800 that he used to own that has been in their family from brand new that has never had to have the head gasket changed as they look after it and check the coolant levels regularly. Once the head gasket has been done correctly with the uprated head gasket there is NO problems with these engines again. The Chinese still use these engines as the N-Series in the MGs with the uprated gaskets today with NO problems these cars still designed and engineered in the same design centre as when it was MG Rover in England before they went bust. The engineers were pushing the management for the uprated gaskets back when it was MG Rover but the corrupt bosses were too busy transferring the assets of the company to their other companies to bother with fixing easy stuff like that for their customers and workers.
@@williamwoods8022 being a rover owner I know the problems with the k lumps, give me a kv6 over a 4 pot. I've had 2 4 pot 1.8 engines with uprated gasket and oil rail and they still blew. The N series is a great rework of the block with extra webbing etc and wouldn't have any problem running a petrol mg6.
The most enjoyable and informative mechanic on UA-cam. Subscribed!
The only place on UA-cam you can see in detail if an engine is good or not. The DuraTEC is a near bulletproof engine, except when the oil runs out.

i use a piece of heater hose inside the plug socket to keep the plug in place, you can also use a length of said hose to remove / replace plugs.
Great spark plug tip.

How long was that run before they decided the warning light meant something?
I always but a dab of copper slip grease on the spark plug threads ... does help....prob be frowned upon though 😜

Great vid! Hope Miss M enjoyed her birthday! I’ll bet she is feeling rougher than them big ends after her celebrations😂😂😂

Should have shoulder bolts and springs on that rear box joint

as long as your engine did not lose too much oil you should be ok..best thing is fit new sump and try it

Some helmet fitted that back box previously without the springs and correct bolts allowing the joint to flex 🤦♂️😷
Instead of throwing out those scrap parts put your autograph on and people will pay you for it or better still run a competition to win them!

That's one wrecked engine. Only cab drivers and women can run an engine without oil and think everything is ok. Warning lights are optional.
I disagree very male bus drivers are quite good at it as well
Perhaps I could do that too. I must admit, I don't check my oil level too often. Every couple of weeks or so. May be insufficient.
