I just got rid of my 2.0 2005 focus ZX3 SES with this motor and a 5 speed manual. It had 117,000 miles on it I was the second owner and the first owner kept matriculas records. I had a huge folder from him with all the service records receipts from the Ford Dealer . I did a really good job of keeping up on the maintenance as well. The motor never let me down at all but the car had rust issues after about a year of owner ship and after about 4 years of ownership the intake runner "flaps" started making noise and the front suspension was in-need of a rebuild and I decided it wasnt worth putting the money the money into a car where the paint was the load bearing part of the rockers.
Nowadays it is the 10K or once a year oil change engines with high mileage and frozen rings making them oil burners. (Notice the crosshatching is gone.) The owners never check the oil level and they get to burning enough that oil starvation takes them out before the next annual oil change. LOL, I am cracking up at the love you are showing this disposable engine. It's been decades since I have heard "the Italian tuneup" used LOL.
"The owners never check the oil level and they get to burning enough that oil starvation takes them out before the next annual oil change." YES! Finally somebody gets it! I think a lot of older engines die this way.
I remember years ago a friend thought he “hurt his engine” and asked me to listen to it. It ran for under ten seconds before I got him to shut it down and asked him if he’d installed a wireless connecting rod. Cause I could heat the unmistakable sound of connecting rod aggressively introducing itself to cylinder liner.
I went to a Ford dealership recently. Opened the hood of a Ford Escape PHEV and saw this engine! They are great motors 👍🏻 I have one in my 2010 Mazda 3 and will likely upgrade to a Ford PHEV with a similar engine when the time comes. Ford did good by still offering this tried-and-tru simple engine.
That engine is pretty much bullet proof. This is one of the best engines Ford made.. All you have to do is change the oil regularly. I drove my Focus for 160K before I traded it in.. It ran great from start to the day I traded it in 11 years later. Basic oil changes is all I did other than spark plugs and coils after I had to change the valve cover gaskets.

I had a Zetec 2.0 in my very first car which was an 03 ZX3 and God I miss that car to this day. The engine seeped oil from almost everywhere but it was never low or burned oil. It wasn't great on fuel with getting maybe 32 on state highways and 27 on the interstate but it was a damn solid engine. Only thing that broke on it that wasn't a consumable was the stupid plastic thermostat housing.
For the first time, Eric torn down a engine from a car I actually owned at one time ('07 Focus). That was a whole Thanksgiving feast sitting in the oil pan with the absolute destruction the engine went though.
I had one of these in the Focus ST170 trim. It had an intake manifold / throttle body area failure where it actually still drove ok (I did 50mph max, low rpms) but there was a Very Loud whizzy-whizzy-SLAP noise coming into the cabin. So it went to the garage before anything proper nasty happened. And then it got traded for a believe it or not faster Lexus CT / Posh Prius because the Focus handled nasty and the heavy clutch and terrible gearbox was causing huge amounts of leg pain (historic sciatic nerve / lower back injury). Oh and the ST170 2.0 had an engine save programme that heavily limited power until the engine warmed up. Thanks for giving me a look inside a variant of that old car's engine !
This is very interesting to watch!! Considering I own an 06 Focus that has 220k miles. It runs like new! It’s kind crazy to see a duratec in such bad condition. These engines are very solid. It takes a LOT of neglect to get that far.
Yes! I have an 05 focus ST (2.3 duratec) and I have 165k on it. Replaced thermostat and did runner flap delete and it’s runs beautifully. Got an intake, exhaust, and a tune and it’s proper quick
I've got the Zetec 2.0. Solid engine. so far anyway. Although it seems to be externally lubricated too. (damn valve cover gasket). But I've ran it at 70mph in 3rd gear, never complained. Course it was only for about 5 seconds before getting on the brakes to set it into turn 3, and then turn 1, and then turn 3 again.
Eric, Thank you for this! I currently have (since 2014) a 2005 Ford Focus ZX4 (4 dr) 5-speed with 199K miles. The 2.0L engine runs beautifully and will outlast it's unibody which is slowly dissolving in the New England environment. BTW the 2.0L Duratec is a Mazda designed (Mazda L engine) engine first used in the Focus in 2003 in 2.3L form. The pretty-much-the same 2.0L was used in the Focus from 2005-2011. The older SPI (based on the even older CVH) and Zetec were good engines with the SPI having a bad habit of dropping valve seats. Paul (in MA)
"It couldn't have been low on oil, the oil light didn't come on until right before the explosion", said a guy at work right before he got fired. The mechanic laughed and said " These aren't supposed to have dry sump lubrication "😁
I happened to stumble across your channel and I've been mesmerized by all the different engine videos I've seen so far, this one was quite hilarious. You got a subscriber now and appreciate your content sir!
I have this engine in my focus rn I have 214,xxx it runs good it has a small tick that you can barely hear but I make sure I change the oil and filter every 5,000 miles!
I have a ‘09 Mazda3 with 324K Klm’s, I’m the 2nd owner. The two things that have gone wrong first was the transmission control module (TCM) and just recently, the ABS module. I have recently discovered how to repair the ABS module more cheaply, as some of these modules can be very expensive used. They have a specific serial number and you can only replace it with one that is within your models "range"...
One of the better engines Ford cannibalized from Mazda. Virtually the same save the head and computer programming. On the intake manifold, there are 4 swirl flaps on the 2.0 and 2.3 while the 2.3 has active intake runner control as well. A lot of times those flaps or parts of them will break off and go into the engine. Great tear down, been looking forward to a duratech for a while.
the split port you mentioned is a good engine if you pull the head and have a machine shop fix the valve seat problem, once the head is fixed, you can't wear that engine out,it will run forever with the best fuel economy of any engine i ever owned
I had one of those split port engines..I knew nothing of valve seat problems. Ran great good fuel mileage UNTIL one day at 147000 miles it dropped a seat! End of road for that engine!
They were damn good engines. I bought one new. After 246,000 trouble free miles I gave the car away. The person I gave it to ran it up to 265,000 miles before the electrical system quit (but the motor was still good).
All you have to do is, CHANGE YOUR OIL!! People do not understand what damage comes after driving a car/truck 70mph or faster after long breaks in oil changes. Well, we all know what happens next. I worked with my brother in law work on cars, the ones that came in where the person Never changed their oil. They had to bring their car on a trailer, was most of the time not running. And we had to call their finance company and deliver the news. They were not very happy to learn, no warranty on that failure. We often became the owner of those cars. We put in a new engine and sold for really good money. I hope to receive one of your bent Rod's. I am very new to your channel. And really enjoying it. When we had our mechanic shop open, we never went too far once we saw holes in the block. I always wanted to. But we had to keep from doing that for the insurance person to come and verify. We sometimes got those automobiles free.
Wow. I had an 05 ZX3 with this motor. Bought with 149k and traded in with 190k. Never had an issue with the engine or trans ever. Only replaced the fuel rail pressure sensor when I bought it, complete rear brakes, a CV axle and a brake line. All things to expect with that mileage. As with any engine, maintenance is key-I cannot emphasize changing the oil with the proper grade enough. Check the coolant levels and keep an eye on your gauges and how it sounds. This (for me anyway) was an EXCELLENT motor and never gave me any grief.
my sonic had oil around one of the inner plugs, so i went around and checked all the valve cover bolts for tightness, there is one between those inner plugs that was not tight, its been good since.
I picked up an 06 with 129,000 miles on it and sold it 4 years later still running with 376,000 miles on the odometer. we now run two of them for work cars and they hold up well.
My son's 2nd Gen Focus with a 2.0L Duratec let go due to his poor maintenance. We didn't bother tearing it down, but I'm pretty sure he spun a bearing and/or did internal carnage due to lack of oil. By the time he called me to look at it, it was clattering like a washing machine full of pots & pans. The dipstick didn't register any oil. I didn't even bother dropping the pan - we just called Cars4Causes and had it hauled away.
@@whtalt92 Worse than that - unlike the Focus, his replacement car was purchased with no financial support from me! This one is all on him. So far, he seems to be keeping up with his oil changes...
I own a 2007 focus with this same engine and a 5-speed that I bought new. It’s been a great, reliable little car. It currently has about 150,000 miles on it. Those cars are considered disposable, but if you take care of them they’ll last. I rarely see one on the road anymore so I’d guess that most of them have gone to the junkyard by now. Obviously, the previous owner couldn’t be bothered to take care of it, and another focus goes to the crusher. What a waste. You mentioned the valve cover leak - my experience is that the valve cover gasket gets hard and starts leaking around 100,000 miles and needs replacing.
Yes I had to replace my 2010 ford focus valve cover gasket at a little over 100k miles now it runs great no more misfires. It has 114k on it now. Minnesota car though so it’s rusty 😢.
Had a 2005 Focus with this engine. Sold it with 160k miles. Bought it with 105k, changed the valve cover seals before they got that bad with oil around the spark plugs. Changed the air box out because the "lifetime" air filter on these are horrible. Didn't leak oil, changed it regularly and other than motor mounts, was great. Some high schooler is beating on it now.....
Something else to consider: Oil filters need to bypass in cold conditions. Think of trying to drink honey through a straw outside is the wintertime for comparison. Oil filters are more about maintenance of clean oil vs instant catastrophic debris protection.
Thanks for the mention of "A&D Ointment." Pure nostalgia. That stuff was a staple around my house for years when the kids were in diapers. Ah, the memories...
I"m located in the UK and I've owned several cars that used the European Ford Zetec version of this engine and (for clients) converted them to racing spec and used them in all manner of sporting conversions, these engines are good and make great power when tuned, we used to get nearly 240 hp@ 8.5K rpm from the 1.8L version on twin Weber DCOE48 carbs and in that tune they even retained a good smooth idle and great road manners. We found them to be completely reliable on standard rods, crank, bearings, oil pump, gaskets, valves etc, all we did was to change the pistons to the forged type, modify the head and fit hot cams and uprated valve springs, lighten the flywheel and fit a competition clutch and balance the rotating assembly. Whoever misused this one until it was so damaged must have been devoid of any mechanical sympathy. "Sausage" HT Racing Ltd
That is some gnarly disconnecting rod action! I just can't imagine the thought process of a driver who ignores the multitude of warnings preceding this
To tell you the truth, a rod about to launch does not always give a bunch of warning. I had a Ford Fiesta with the Kent engine. Loved the car. It developed what I thought was tappet noise, but it was February and seeing as I did my car work in the yard (in Michigan) I decided to wait for warmer weather. The tappet kept ticking until one day at about 70 mph, it went from tick to clatter to BOOM in about 2.5 seconds. Fortunately I had time to push in the clutch. I don't think a little front wheel drive car locking its front axle at 70 mph would have been a ride I would have enjoyed. I actually had enough momentum to make it to the next off ramp and park the car at a gas station. Only had to walk as far as the pay phone (it was a long time ago) Mine was the number two rod. It broke, with the bottom end still on the crank but ventilating the front of the block.
In the early 50s, my friends and I found an old Hudson in the woods. This older guy with us, drained out all the oil. He got it running some how and put a heavy rock on the gas pedal. We all ran away and listened and watched until it ground down to nothing. We were all surprised that it took some time for it to stop.Thats what that carnage you found in that poor Ford 4 banger reminded me of. Love your wit and talent. Keep it up.
The Hudson probably would have just seized or overheated, and restarted after it had cooled down. The older engines had much looser bearing tolerances and they also revved a lot lower, even with a rock on the pedal.
I once owned a 2013 Focus with Powershit Tranny. Bought it cash and brand new; after a month of use, I sold it after hearing grinding noise on the tranny. It has an awesome 2.0 engine though. I'll never buy a DCT or a CVT in my life again.
23:30 Jam a screwdriver or 5 to 8mm bolt under the chain against the sprocket. That will lock the chain/sprocket from spinning so you can undo the bolt. Another great teardown.
The Safety Tote is quickly becoming a staple of the channel. Fantastic! I think it would be hilarious if you cut out a window in the tote, cut some plexiglass to size and caulked it in. Exceptionally functional safety tote!!
Most of the failures with these engines is lack of maintenance 100%. My '09 Focus with the Duratec engine is at 230,000 miles and never had catastrophic failures. ✌️
I had that exact engine in mine 2005 focus, eu version, minor changes (145hp). It did over 200k miles without any issues, never even had to change the timing chain. No oil leaks whatsoever. Loved that engine. The only issue with it was it was consuming more and more oil, especially past 150k mark and on higher revs - those engines had the tendency for the oil rings to get clogged and stuck. Besides that - pretty much indestructible if you give it at least minimum care. PS. that oil pump sound reminds me of a girl I knew
I absolutely love your channel. I love your silly antics. You know how to keep a captive audience with your personality. However something I've never seen before on this channel, I would love to see you tear down a working engine with just an incredible buttload of miles on it. A gas engine with half a million miles or something like that.
Maybe when I decide to finally replace the engine in my Suburban (TBI 350) I should offer it to him for the core charge plus shipping. It's at 332 thousand miles now, and I don't plan to replace it super soon, and I drive it a ton. It's been great, and it's gotten 115k on it since I've owned it. I have no plans to let it explode. I'd be interested to see the inside without having to do the teardown myself lol
Great teardown, Eric! Loved it. Would think an alternative explanation of torn rod would be the piston nugget got pinched between the rod and the cylinder wall as crank rotated--rather than momentum causing rod to fracture. That said, who cares, hun? Another great show! Best wishes from Florida.
Very nice! Those first generation Focus engines seem to be pretty reliable if they’re looked after. It really bugs me how some people just don’t seem to care. You don’t have to be a gear head,-or petrol head if you’re European-you just need to give it a little attention now and then.
The car was probably being treated as disposable. I've had many cars like that over the years, bought at Auction and literally driven until they blow up or get sold on. I never changed the ownership over, so the option was always there to leave it on the side of the road rather than paying for towing. A car like that never even gets washer fluid, let alone an oil change.
That oil pump was performing throat singing for you. Also that baffle looked like it had a perfect imprint of a rod giving it a high speed kiss! Excellent video!
The sensor on top of the engine between cylinders 2 and 3 is a temperature sensor. Strangely enough, it does not soak in the coolant, but is screwed into the cylinder head. I had to change one the other day because the PCM thought the engine was hot even at -10º Celcius and the car refused to start...
My sister had an 01 focus that had a pcv issue (I know $12 right) so she got a buddy to disconnect the pcv from the intake to 'fix' the issue. Top end started making noise *turned the music up* bottom end started knocking *turned the music up* bottom end started KNOCKING, so she reved it and shot the whole rod through the oil pan.
It would have been interesting to see you cut the filter open to see how plugged it was. Great video Eric, thanks for the tutorial on how not to maintain your engine
Such lovely carnage and some unexpected additional damage. I'd bet the reason for the rtv in the chain cover was due to a leak they tried to fix on the cheap.
Or the engine had a noise and the interwebz mechanics said it was a timing chain problem, so they dutifully opened that cover to see the issue.....then realized the timing was fine and kept driving it.
"I didn't think one cylinder could cause so much destruction"----I was thinking the exact same thing. Just annihilated. It seems to me that this engine was turning some serious revs when it came apart---missed shift, perhaps?
sucks too because the mk1 focus is incredibly easy to work on and do maintenance with minimal knowledge. If you change the oil and make sure it isn't using any, you'll get 200k miles easy

What a shame, The duratec 2.0 engine is known to be pretty bulletproof, minus some valve cover gasket and pcv issues, that's really it. It had to take a lot of abuse for someone to do that. Allot of times I see duratec 2.0 engines blown up from over revving or money shifting and dropping valves because of the abuse. Mine's been a sweetheart for 3 years so far, 2010 focus, got it with 80,000 mi and so far have 120,000 mi on it it doesn't burn a drop of oil.
Duratec 2.0L is a rebranded Mazda MZR engine. Except for the DI Ti-VCT ones (still share the base of MZR tho)

Love the inspection holes... Please continue, my Saturday is not complete without watching your tear down videos...
It looks like somebody was really ringing out that 2.0!! That looks like very high rpms, if you ask me. Can't imagine what it must've sounded like! 😲😄
@@jacobjones2766 That's awesome!! I've always wanted an ST, but I couldn't find one. So I settled on a ZX4 SE instead.
@@jacobjones2766 how did the runner flip delete go? I have the same car and am about to do it once it warms up.
My 2.0L in my 2013 Focus Hatch (5 speed) has 364,900km and counting and running like a top
these are actually pretty good engines when cared for and decent in the cars they came in. my dad had one with a stick shift and it drove well.
I put 250k on one over 4 years and sold it still running with 376,000 miles. 🤣 I own 2 more of them now for work cars.
I have one with the 2.3 variant. Funniest and most reliable car I’ve ever owned hands how. Horrid gas mileage though 😂
"This was just for the video."
And we appreciated that.
Went and found an engine just for us viewers. I feel privileged.
Lol...
It was cool to watch this. I have an 07 Mazda 3 and it looks pretty similar. I'll be sure to keep oil in it.
Eric,
Thank you for this!
I own an ‘05 focus with this engine. 150k miles. This was super interesting to watch for a whole list of reasons. Thanks for the upload
So , basically someone was " focus"ed with tearing up the engine 👍 , by the way , that wasn't oil around the plugs , that was spark plug fluid 😜
Wondered what that was. Lol. 8--)
drive a 06 focus with 310,000 miles on it. Still gets over 30miles per gallon. Been a great car.
"It couldn't have been low on oil, the oil light didn't come on until right before the explosion", said a guy at work right before he got fired. The mechanic laughed and said " These aren't supposed to have dry sump lubrication "😁
These motors are tuff iv been thrashing one for years with no love at all and it still runs sweet
Agreed this is a good engine. I still have and maintain an '05 Focus and '11 Transit with an updated 2.0 Duratec with close to 300K KMs on each.
Do they consume oil?
@@bartoszkaczynski8609 Not typically. Moms 2010 Focus with 360K kms doesn't burn a drop. It may leak some from the valve cover though...
@@bruiser66 its probably zetec then, not duratec ;)
@@BlisAx nice! You sure it's s 1.8 or 2.0 duratec though?
One of the better engines Ford cannibalized from Mazda. Virtually the same save the head and computer programming. On the intake manifold, there are 4 swirl flaps on the 2.0 and 2.3 while the 2.3 has active intake runner control as well. A lot of times those flaps or parts of them will break off and go into the engine. Great tear down, been looking forward to a duratech for a while.
The 2.0 ford is a great engine....mine runs still runs excellent at 130k miles with 5k syn oil changes
the split port you mentioned is a good engine if you pull the head and have a machine shop fix the valve seat problem, once the head is fixed, you can't wear that engine out,it will run forever with the best fuel economy of any engine i ever owned
I had one of those split port engines..I knew nothing of valve seat problems. Ran great good fuel mileage UNTIL one day at 147000 miles it dropped a seat! End of road for that engine!
folks it wasn't even a competition. the dipstick gave up the ghost right along with the engine.
The victory is still "I Do Cars!!"
my 2002 focus zx3(zetec basic not svt engine) has over 300K miles on the original engine, 3rd transmission, 4th alternator, one owner! :)
The streetfighter stance against the dipstick got me 😂
Thank you for taking the time and effort to visit some other yards to find us this jem!!!
I'm the one weirdo that takes care of and treats his Ford Focus like a pampered princess lol.

Nice tear down Eric. That’s some kind of destruction in that engine. What a mess! Thanks for sharing. Big Al.
That is a Mazda L engine. The same used in the Miata. Those are rock solid if kept up with. Quite torquey in an 08 focus.
my sonic had oil around one of the inner plugs, so i went around and checked all the valve cover bolts for tightness, there is one between those inner plugs that was not tight, its been good since.

I presume you've enlightened him to the economies and advantages of proper maintenance and care of automotive vehicles ?
That oil filter must be so clogged, the by-pass is allowing debris to flow right through. That would explain the trash in the cam journals.
I always giggle when the "safety tote" comes out....too funny
That Hudson deserved better. If it could do that, you should have taken it home and loved it. Poor thing.
I love the commentary as these engines get torn down. I think you should start a second channel solely comprised of "out of context" moments.
The Safety Tote is quickly becoming a staple of the channel. Fantastic! I think it would be hilarious if you cut out a window in the tote, cut some plexiglass to size and caulked it in. Exceptionally functional safety tote!!
In honour of this video, I suggest the window should be caulked with Orange RTV.
You need to install a plexiglass window on your safety tote lol
I absolutely lost it when you said "Turn your head and cough"! Thanks for the video.
I look forward to your Saturday Night Show, it's a real treat. Thanks and God Bless.
Great teardown, Eric! Loved it. Would think an alternative explanation of torn rod would be the piston nugget got pinched between the rod and the cylinder wall as crank rotated--rather than momentum causing rod to fracture. That said, who cares, hun? Another great show! Best wishes from Florida.
this one must be for the record books. the amount of destruction is baffling.
There is something oddly relaxing just watching you tear shit apart lol
Another I checked the oil last week it was fine. So keep up the good times and I will see you one the next one.
Very nice! Those first generation Focus engines seem to be pretty reliable if they’re looked after.
It really bugs me how some people just don’t seem to care. You don’t have to be a gear head,-or petrol head if you’re European-you just need to give it a little attention now and then.
People don't put much effort into keeping up with maintenance.
Wow. That had to take time! That must be a solid design to keep it running long enough, on 3 cylinders, to do that!

Would love to see an old Saturn 1.9l, either SOHC or DOHC. Keep up the great work! Been watching since the very first teardown.
Me as well. I owned 3 1.9's and they were good engines other than the oil burning which if you kept the oil topped up was a non issue at least for me.

Gif it’s always a good day when there’s a engine take down
The sensor on top of the engine between cylinders 2 and 3 is a temperature sensor. Strangely enough, it does not soak in the coolant, but is screwed into the cylinder head.
Another great week,
I’m referring to the video
Thanks
Such lovely carnage and some unexpected additional damage. I'd bet the reason for the rtv in the chain cover was due to a leak they tried to fix on the cheap.
Or the engine had a noise and the interwebz mechanics said it was a timing chain problem, so they dutifully opened that cover to see the issue.....then realized the timing was fine and kept driving it.
I’ve blown up lots of engines. In my experience That one went for a long time after failure. Those are the best!
"I didn't think one cylinder could cause so much destruction"----I was thinking the exact same thing. Just annihilated. It seems to me that this engine was turning some serious revs when it came apart---missed shift, perhaps?

What a shame, The duratec 2.0 engine is known to be pretty bulletproof, minus some valve cover gasket and pcv issues, that's really it. It had to take a lot of abuse for someone to do that. Allot of times I see duratec 2.0 engines blown up from over revving or money shifting and dropping valves because of the abuse.
