This Tiny Desk concert was part of Tiny Desk Fest, a four-night series of extended concerts performed in front of a live audience and streamed live on UA-cam, Twitter and Facebook.
Dec. 3, 2019 | Stephen Thompson -- "I heard a big thing on NPR about the shrinking of the attention span and how now, with pop songs, everything has like six seconds before you gotta change it, because the kids swipe over," Sheryl Crow tells the crowd early in her Tiny Desk Fest concert. "I'm just gonna tell you right now: We're dinosaurs. ... And while the kids are all writing fast food - which is super-cool 'cause it tastes great, super-filling - we're sort of still writing salmon. We're the songwriters that are here to tax your attention span."
Twenty-five years ago this fall, Crow was in the midst of a massive career breakthrough: Her inescapable hit "All I Wanna Do" was entrenched in the Top 5 - it would later win the Grammy for Record of the Year - and her 1993 debut album, Tuesday Night Music Club, was well on its way to selling more than 7 million copies in the U.S. alone. The years since have been similarly kind. A heavily decorated but eternally approachable star, Crow has released 11 albums and won nine Grammys en route to her latest, a duets collection called Threads.
For NPR's Tiny Desk Fest, Crow and her crack band of rock-and-roll lifers performed a 35-minute set (including two unexpected encores) that featured new material from Threads and a handful of hits that have morphed over the years into pop standards. From the easygoing opening strains of "All I Wanna Do" to the rousing final notes of "If It Makes You Happy," we were in some of the surest hands in the business.

We well we well
Let me tell ya, when a 57 year old hits the high notes that she wrote when she was 23 years old, you better believe that's rare and special. Love her.
Back up She's 57!?!? Not only does she look as stunning as ever, she remains the same 23 year old in my mind due to nostalgia 💓 Ya that vocal range, she's a true artist and legend. Much respect to this lovely lady!
She's way older than 57.
Which song did she write at age 23?
Not so much. I've been with 60 years old who had a much better range than I used to have, and they are the reason why I can sing up to the 5th and even the beginning of the 6th octave as a male. Once you master the technique there is no reason to lose it when you play all the time. At all. Simply most people try to "hit the note", which is exactly the opposite of what you should do, period. If you look at how opera singers do it, you can use the same principle in any style... you open that throat wide as much as you can and sing from the belly up. Actually takes much less efforts to sing head voice than to sing belting voice, Freddy Mercury style. Chest and head voices ain't hard at all once you get your belt voice together. Now THAT'S hard. Most singers don't really have a belt voice at all, when all of you vocal folds are required. It's super intense. That's why almost no one can sing Queen's songs to original pitch with Freddy's intensity.
@@jas_bataille Yup. Modulation - I've been teaching that as I was taught in choir many years ago. But I'm a 1st soprano and can rarely belt at all due to frequent respiratory illness.
The fact that she secured one of the longest tiny desk slots at 35 minutes lol...legendary
I think teh strategy is that you just keep playing... I mean who the heck is going to stop you?? :)
That's one thing I don't get....... NPR hire some top artists to perform, but then have them play only 3 or 4 songs. Makes no sense!
@@JPhilipCoombsThey don't "hire" them per say, as they don't pay the artists. Still, it's confusing. You think if you could get a great artist/band to preform for free you'd have more than 15 minutes, especially for flying all the way out of Washington D.C!
@@iamauseroftheyoutubeplatform "Book" might be the better term, if you prefer. I still think that so much more could be made of tiny desk, similar to MTVs "Unplugged".
Alicia Keys, Cypress Hill, CHIC, others: all around 30 minutes or so as well. It's prob not 'legendary', just a tightly constructed set that NPR went along with
Dude, this sound engineer is out of this world
Yep, except for the fact that he pushed the soloing Audley Freed (Cry of Love, Black Crowes) a bit too much in the background in my taste...
Also, it probably doesn’t get much better than this as far as vocalists and musicians goes.
Come on is not a complicated mix.
@@tonywolfemusic5920 exactly
@@jaconova It's an office tho, not a studio. They consistently make a wide range of artists sound fantastic.
Sheryl Crow, Jewel, Sarah McLachlan and Alanis Morissette were my entire adolescence. ♥️♥️♥️♥️
+ Lisa Loeb, Tori Amos, Mazzy Star, Jewel, Aimee Mann, The Cranberries
Was such a good time to be a teenage girl
No Joan Osborne?
Me too, and stevie knicks. Thats just me though
My condolences

Thanks
Wish she would have sung tulsa time.
this woman does not age, still a beauty!!
Her music keeps her young.
Getting away from Lance Armstrong undoubtedly helped too!!!!
plastic surgery
@@nobodyfromnowhere7823 even if true, ive seen bad work on others, so if shes had work, shes spent her money well
No she looks good but older we all get older.
I was blown away by the talent on display here. Singing, songwriting, musicianship. The band is so tight. Very impressive.
And brilliant humor! The joke on the attention span "salmon" is hilarious!
There's a special kind of nostalgic sadness that comes with listening to "If It Makes You Happy".
The real stand out for me is the way the whole band are so relaxed and appear to enjoy the performance.
Sheryl's vocals are superb but the whole band display a real quality and musicality.
I love the variety of AWESOME artists that NPR has blessed us with lately.
Probably word gets around and more artists want to be part of the magic. For people like Taylor Swift this is an invaluable image boost because now everyone can see that she is a decent guitarist and singer. We already knew that of Sheryl Crow ofc ;)
Sheryl Crow ranks high in my estimation of musical artists. I like her because she's been true to herself and her audience her entire career, and she is so darn talented. Thank you NPR for bringing the gem that is Sheryl Crow to us in your Tiny Desk Concert series.
She has definitely shared her experiences of life. I thank her for that.
I cant stop looking at the woman playing keyboard, she was so into this, the smile, the back up vocals, so passionate❤️
I’m not the only one
Absolutely gorgeous too.
Her backing vocals on "If It Makes You Happy" are just heavenly.
Yep, she's great! Loved her vocals too
Jen gunderman :)
Sheryl says, “No three songs for me. I’m going to pack in as many as I can.” She’s as awesome as she was in the 1990’s.
even better voice
When she hits that first chorus of “If It Makes You Happy”....chills
Came here for this comment, she lifted it so much it was just amazing.
She puts it all out there, and she really doesn't have to. I'm incredibly impressed with this performance!!
The Chemistry that occurs when at the Beginning if It Makes You Happy
when she starts with her going a little off meter
and the calls out 2 3 4 as she looks at the drummer and his eyes seem to say "right I got it"
is a very precious moment
Thoroughly pro musicianship. What a band. Perfect backup for Sheryl's wonderful songs.
I can't define the peacefull feeling i feel when i'm looking at that band of musiciens all around Sheryl. It looks like old friends playing music together just for the pleasure of music. No ego, no negativity.
I can’t get over the way Jen looks at Sheryl when she’s singing the background vocals and playing the keys. It’s so adorable and also intense
guy woodhouse thx for ur input, guy woodhouse
This is probably one of the best Tiny Desk concerts out there and I have watched them all. Honestly, this isn't a gimme gimme, this band rocks this 35 minute set and there is no denying it even at the end of 2023.
Like a fine wine. Soo goood.
25yrs ago I was just a kid listening to this at the local bowling alley. Now the bowling alley is torn down I'm an old man and Sheryl ain't changed a bit..
woah! thats something
Welcome to life, live it to the fullest. Time waits for no one.
Sounds like a country song. She is timeless.
Me too ;)
Great, now I have to go bowling.
Thanks!
Sheryl is 57 now... wow.
My childhood... covering songs with Dad, and just jamming out to all of the albums of hers that Mom had. Awesome. Like everyone else, I miss the 90s.
That lady in the keyboards & back vocals is so good! (and so sweet...)
She is absolutely, a beautiful woman.😍
yep. she was definitely enjoying it.
100% Agreed 🤙
Jen Gunderman. She’s awesome!
Dude, she crushes. Phenomenal accompaniment.
Wow, one of best Tiny Desks yet!
Sheryl and band, recording, lighting - the whole deal. A++
Dear young self,
We owe this marvelous lady a lot of good memories.
Thank you Sheryl, your music is a big part of my life.
*Nostalgic flashback happening now*
Thank you NPR.
Love from the Philippines 🇵🇭.
We owe her NOTHING!,,,she is a dirt bag
Yep. She still got it.
She can give depth to the most simple ideas, and simple songs. Her ability to recreate these over the years and give them even more richness is remarkable. Legendary Sheryl! What a band too!
I really like her backing band, very talented musicians. Also I like how happy Sheryl looks when playing these songs
V true😂
She’s awesome. Those songs are deceptively difficult to play or sing. She’s so relaxed and talented.
Thank you for supporting my music I believe you are having an amazing day.

This woman is my dream since i was a child in 90s. She's the country-rock queen!!!
I watched this thinking about how beautifully the keyboard player harmonized. Such a perfect blend with Cheryl’s voice, spot on. I looked in the notes to learn she is Jen Gunderman, not only a professional musician, but a professor of music! I’m definitely going to look for her music!
Gorgeous lady, tortured soul, authentic and vulnerable in her song writing, and a true musician. Love this old school music with so much soul.
Tortured soul?
@@broadpath I believe it is called borderline personality disorder, but I wrote tortured soul to be polite.
Worse than useless to post "tortured soul" or "BPD" because it's unhelpful, unkind, unnecessary, and likely speculation or just repeating other peoples trolling remarks ... that is unless you are her doctor which would make it criminally useless
@@le_th_What gives you the impression she has BPD? From everything I’ve heard her say, she suffers from clinical depression, lifelong. She’s made some other comments that made me think maybe she’s bipolar (“the really high highs, the really low lows”) but I don’t know if that’s it. But yes, a sometimes tortured soul.
@@broadpathYes, a tortured soul. She’s suffered from clinical depression her whole life and has contemplated suicide a number of times. When she got done with the Michael Jackson ‘Bad’ tour, she came home and stayed in bed for 5-6 months because she was so depressed. Her mother had to come and admit her to a hospital because she was wasting away.
That is pure artistic quality on every level, seen so rare on these days!! Her voice, the songs, the lyrics, the musicians and the whole energy from that performance!! Wow!!
The musicians behind her are fantastic!
That's her band they tour with her, they are very good.
I love you ❤️
I am 56now and I have found my highs in her music during my teenage in the 1980s... Sheryl Crow still Rockks❤🎵🎵
Sheryl is amazing - real women - real music - Tiny Desk i simply love you
yes
Omg shes looks exactly the same. She looks and sounds great.
Exactly my thought when I saw her!
Velvet Lattimore really ❤️🥰
Thank God for surgery hahah... I love her music and her band anyway!!
Honestly she looks better than ever! (Caught myself ogling several times lol)Her music is a given, you have to be solid to stick for 30 years. The band sounds great as an acoustic set.
Just looked it up- she is 57! She looks incredible! and doesn't look like she has had plastic surgery.
Popped up on my UA-cam feed today on July 4th. Sheryl Crow and her music are iconic and genuine gems of Americana 💯🇺🇸🗽 Even though I heard this sesh a few years ago I didn't mind hitting that play button 🥰🎸🎶
I love Sheryl Crow and her band. They're such a cohesive unit - flawless performance as always!
Haven’t seen such a feel good performance in quite a while!

Sheryl Crow Rocks it& her band is EPIC
Sheryl Crow rocks! Always loved her and she nails this Tiny Desk series!
She looks (and sound) great 💎💙
My dad introduced me to Sheryl in the 90s. Her music is the soundtrack to many childhood memories. Pure nostalgia, all smiles. Thank you Sheryl & thank you NPR ❤️
Did you get her autograph when you were introduced.😉
Loved her from the beginning and always will. Thank you for all the music over the year's. ❤️
She is the absolute best. The whole package. You can relate to her music, her lyrics you can sing along with. It's the real good stuff. Her band is super.
Saw her at a private show years ago .. late 90s I think. When you see her in a setting similar to this you appreciate what a talent she is. Loved her then still love her now.
How many of her contemporaries are still around, writing music that is as vital & relevant as it's ever been? This woman has reached legend status.
Sheryl is a perfect combination of sublime musical talent and beauty, her band with Peter Straub etc are world class as well. Julian Lusby Lowestoft Suffolk
"If it makes you happy" one of my favorite songs by her! I am happy that she sung it!!
What a beautiful lady and so talented.
What a perfect combination of players...no one fades out.
Every one shines in a perfect way to compliment each other.
I gotta see them
30 years and getting better ! . Class act !
Like good wine, as older it gets, better it becomes. Simply awesome
Cross Creek Rd sounds like a Neil Young track. Love Sheryl Crow. So genuine positive and humble.
Her voice sounds better than it has in years.
I am curious what you mean, it sounds a little less gruff maybe, but I always thought that was kind of her sound.
@@alexanderalvarado8010 I can't find it now. Maybe it was just a bad night and she had a cold-- and that performance stuck in my head. I thought it was an SNL performance.
Don't get me wrong: She's one of my modern favorites.
@@zzkatz9446 I don't know what it is about SNL but it has a habit of making otherwise amazing artists sound terrible. Meanwhile Tiny Desk, which is shot in a freaking office, sounds amazing, the sound engineer, Josh Rogosin, is tremendous.
Agreed. Except for GE Smith. He always sounded amazing!
NPR is really on it!!! And Sheryl sounds amazing as usual!!
the only sad part about these mini-concerts is we'll never have one with Prince
Hollie Dote agreed! Prince, Michael, and Whitney would have all slayed!!!
god she is a BEAUTY QUEEN and ROCK STAR!!
Sheryl Crow, still gorgeous as ever and the talent us mind blowing.
She’s still so gorgeous .....
Ever talented, ever beautiful!
Superficial
Her band are essentially Don Henleys solo band and they absolutely rock! What a session!
I was trying to find some of the clips of her performances at the 2013 Rock Hall of Fame induction. Found this instead and am not disappointed. This is such a wonderful performance by her and her band, obviously having a great time. Loved it! Thank you NPR. A very happy monthly supporter.
Just as strong if not stronger than ever, npr you've done it again. Sheryl Crow, so much respect
But...better. There's a heavier sound to her lower register than before the and it suits her.
I was 11 when I finally got to take lessons in Guitar. It was because of Sheryl + Suzanne Vega + Christy Moore. First talent competition I sang at 13 years old was the Book....(of course I lost to Miss Eliot Get your freak on dance routine). So much love for this artist. Sheryl Crow will always be my musical hero.
Incredible, incredible performer. I always appreciated the fact that each of her songs told a story.
She is total class! The band are awesome. It doesn't get any better.
Imagine for a second, you are that nine-year-old and that's YOUR Mamma performing!
Oh wow I was just screaming out one of her songs and here she is in my recommendations!!
Wish you don't have any digital assistant listening to you at all times...
@@limamarco that sh!ts for real!!! i have my cam covered at all times and deny voice access whenever possible. my fav show is Big Brother....... i just dont want to live it!!
She's seemed like the ultimate cool chick for 25 years.
Sheryl is my role model in many ways...amazing performance!
Of all the concerts I've been to, Sheryl Crow is one of the best Live performers I've seen. At Lilith Fair she just blew everyone else out of the water. Her band is incredibly talented as well. Love this. Thanks!
she has one of the best bands on here. two players hitting the slide guitar together have to work together very well, and the chill vibe they are all playing with is great
Sherly Crow is amazing.
Wow. Born in Nashville in ‘65 and lived on the same street with Dolly but all I can say is Wow on this. Such a crazy SC fan. 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Top shelf - great musician - lovely person - just want to give her a hug and say thank you.
Sounds better than ever. Just as lovely too. When an artist sounds so superb live, you know they're the real deal! ☮️👌
true story ;)
Love all the adverts in this, especially in the middle of the songs, they really don't detract from Ms Crow what's so ever...
What a beautiful human. So genuine, still rocking 30 years after these songs were written and nailing the notes. The genuine happiness she carries herself with is just inspiring.
She is still so beautiful.. and the voice! Wou
Good band as well
It just sounds so professional,, her, the band, the arrangements, the recording. Wow.
Now this is real music and Sheryl is still every bit beautiful. Sing girl sing🥰
I am still listen to this
i really miss the 90's. what a decade in music art.
😭 this one would have been a perfect performance to broadcast live! Please put these performances on the list for a live video. I'd wake up at 3 in the morning or sneak out of work just to be able to see these types of artists live. 🖤🦋
This was broadcast live
Incredible voice and person
Still playing songs she wrote and sang 25 years ago IN THE SAME KEY!!!
Thanks Cheryl and Band👍🏻👍🏻🎸🎸🎶🎶❤️❤️
she is INCREDIBLE just like her band, i was amaze with each one of them, and is an example that no matter how old you are when u are an amazing musician
