Joel - running is not a good idea on deck. a trip is more dangerous. Test it, Time it! Walking versus running is literally a second - walking is safer. Slow yourself down when you are solo to stay in control - there is no rush. I solo all the time and one of my experienced cruising friends taught me the sense of slowing down. It's good to see you back out there single handing. Keep it up.
Agreed! I was thinking that while watching it. It is counter intuitive but I know your right. Slow is pro. Still figuring out how to be comfortable solo. Seems like there is so much to do.

This is what I've been waiting for! Love the raw and real emotions of you getting out there and sending it. The emotions make it real and gives a dreamer like me a real look into possibilities. I'm 48 yr old but still feel like I'm 25 mentally but body feels like 65 from 30 yrs in the Fastener business heading fasteners. I dream of the day i can get on a sail boat for first time and u ultimate dream is to live aboard one but My wife does not share the same dream so it's getting time to say goodbye to the wife😂 ! Just kidding. But she knows my dream and I hope to one day spend a month aboard a sail boat to get my goal partially achieved. Back in the beginning of Bums on a boat is when i fell on love with the dream of sailing from watching you go for it and seeing the adventures and characters you met along the way to the jumping from boat to boat mid sail to help a fellow sailer that lost his mast and was going through medical issue at same time. Happy for you to see you getting back to the basics and going it solo. I'm excited for the journey and if ever need company I'd be happy to join you for couple weeks and help out and learn myself. 💯💪
Oh man!! What a treat watching this video! I left from the same bay, also my 1st solo trip on my 40ft hunter, no autopilot or windlass, it sure was intimidating alright!!(and I'm 60), so many thoughts rushing though your head, adrenaline pumping..... its as exhilarating as dropping on a huge wave surfing.... love it.... and btw, gets easier every trip you do.... preparation is KEY to a successful trip, as you'll find out. Keep everything you might need within reach, including food and something to drink, and the basic tools, screw driver, pliers etc..lol. loved this episode, so real!! Can't wait for the next installment . Well done dude!👊🏻 see you on one of the islands soon ⛵

There was a time when all of those problems you had in this episode would have overwhelmed you[even if you had recognized them]. Now you are anticipating, evaluating, and reaching conclusions[doing repairs] on your own...Thomas would be proud of you!

I’ve had a little hiatus from Bums & the other sailing channels i watch. Slowly getting back into them. Solo sailing is my main interest. The old girl is looking a little tired & lines look badly weathered. I hope you get her ship shape & setup for some solo sailing. Good luck & go get’em.
By the way , you can always chicken gybe when the wind is up . Instead of a jibe just do a big tack all the way around head to wind in a big circle , slower but cheaper than breaking something .
Leaving the sheets loose on the main while getting the boat ready is such a great tip! Embrace the butterflies. I feel exactly the same every time I take the lines off of my cleats and know the sailboat is drifting. That, and going back to the mooring are the two hardest parts of sailing.
Well done getting back out there! Rigging a boom brake like we had on High Note would be a great safety add on. Remember the metal figure 8 we hung from the boom with lines running from one ide through it to the other to slow the boom down.

Have you considered installing a preventer on your boom? Just a line/sheet that attaches to the boom and runs either starboard or port and secures to a cleat to prevent an accidental shift of wind crashing the boom to the opposite side. Great episode and yes it is "we". I wonder though. I find even day sailing can be lonely when by myself...even the Marina and docks can be quiet and lonely. A certain calmness and solitude which can be good for me being an introvert. Still, I feel it. Do you find talking to us for your episodes gives a feeling of company?

I have such a small electrical bank. Two 6 volts in parallel and 200 watts of solar. On average I draw about 8 Amps when living on Chak Matay full time. Fridge, fan and lights.

I waited for several weeks to see what happens, but now i do have to ask: Where is Esrah? What happned, he dissapeared after a few episodes, but it seemed he would stay for a few more. Especially now that Tha boat is ready to sail, he is a good guy and he learns fast, and it seemed he had a ton of fun with you. :) (accept for the cleaning of the hull, with the bugs)
Baby steps 👶 are still steps!!! It’s how we all learned to walk, at least that’s what I tell myself. Lol yea, luckily I didn’t have to pay too much for that lesson, just more embarrassment. Now I know how to avoid that and wasn’t that fun 😅
I have rigged 2 preventers on the main. I use both to jibe the boat to keep the mast stable in transit across the boat. I have a slow jibe because I have a baby stay on my mast and slows the 135% genoa during a tack.

Sailing off anchor is a challenge. Even good sailors find it to be a challenge.
