F-YA Buddy! I’m serious man, you are killing it at life right now! You look and sound so much better when you are back, tackling life head on. Hell Ya Bruiser!! Whatever you’re doing is working!
You are getting better at this . Don't despair too much about your difficulties , the boat set up is difficult to single hand . Some boats are easier .
2 cents on leaving the mooring with the sails up, I would skip that and hoist outside where you have space .. it much saver and easier to focus on the anchor only, then when your outside with a lot of space use the autopilot to keep the nose in the wind and hoist the mainsail, take a heading and unfurl the jib. i solo a lot and this has been the easiest add best for me.
Getting way better. Use your traveler to your advantage. Move it across close to the boom. This will allow you to keep the main sheet shorter, and thereby reduce the amount the boom can swing on an accidental jibe. Keep at it!
I'm in the middle of taking my own baby steps. Headed out into the Atlantic for the fist time last weekend, in north Florida, and got my ass kicked. The ship traffic and wind against tide were just too much so I turned and headed in. You're doing it right, step by step, test the boat and yourself. Cheers bro.
Keeping a reef in while solo sailing is a great choice. Don't forget it's always easier to shake that out if you are sure the wind has died for a while than putting the reef in in a hurry. Once you do start sailing with the jib as well you can play more with balancing the jib vs reefed main. (Do you have a smaller jib?) Sometimes it helps to put a line around the boom to hold the clew of the sail down as needed if it's pulling up to much/vibrating (sorry if I missed that). Does it have a leach line you could tighten? Or maybe it was just luffing as you headed into the wind.
Joel, please!, When you go forward to work the mast or foredeck., make sure to have yourself clipped in to the safety lines. You should have a taught line run from the bowsprit to the cockpit down the middle and hook into that also. One misstep or wind shift and it's all over. Get a harness and an EPIRB ASAP.
Well done Joel! Getting off anchor without a windlass is pretty tricky at times. I only have a manual windlass and i think the biggest aid to soli sailing - which i do all the time, would be to have an electric windlas with a cockpit remote! From January to April this year i didnt have a functional motor so i was sailing onto and off the anchor. That was one hell of a learning curve! One thing i learnt was that i need a longer main sheet to be able let the boom out further to enable me to steer the boat better. Looks like you might benafit from that also.
So very happy to see Joel moving past what i thought was a toxic relationship. The signs were uncomfortably familiar. He seems much healthier now. His own man.
What would have worked to get the back edge of the main sail tighter, would have been to ease off the traveler to leeward and tighten up the mainsheet which also helps flatten the sail and reduce the healing of the boat. Have fun.
Good Job Joel. I would have likely not raised the main in a tight anchorage to reduce windage on the boat and reduce drifting. Happy to see the auto pilot working.
Anchorages can cause higher heart rates - it happens, and we do our best for it not to happen. Nothing wrong with motor sailing. I’d ease your topping lift, and use the traveller more. When I come into an anchorage and there’s safe room to do so I will work my way right up into the anchorage well past where I actually want to anchor and just get a full idea of where everyone is, where they’re lying to tide and wind, an depths. I then wander back to the spot I’ve chosen and set anchor. I still say singlehanded is just the best way to sail 👍🏻🇦🇺
Well done Joel.😊 i was there with you, learning the sheets, putting the fenders out,😮just incase, but no time😮keeping cool, with a relaxed laugh at the end🎉❤😂cheers
That looked a bit dicey but you killed it! Brought me back to the usual gag reflexes that would happen every time we would pull anchor to set sail in the early morn! LETS GO BABY!
To pull an anchor single handed, you want to just bump it forward, then get forward and start pulling up chain, when it gets too tough lock down the chain and repeat the process. I did this solo when a dead windlass and 170 feet of chain out, topped off with a 70 lb rockna.
Great to see your auto pilot is holding course, 😁 and the motor purnnnn ,That is one scary mast in the wind Joel 😳left to right woww, as deep purple said, mind your head, have fun you can do it all
Hey joel, great to see you shaking down you boat on a solo sail. Your getting lots of great advice in the comments. Sheeting in the main was a great tactic you did when tacking and jibing. I do that all the time! Try to keep a bit of tension on the boom vang, that can keep the boom in check i case of accidental jibe. Ive been on a racing boat where on the jibe the boom lifted up and when it came down it tore the main in two. Looking good out there! Enjoy!
There are ways so you don't have to gibe. Make a couple of tacks and you don't have to worry about that. Protect your equipment. Your rigging is old so you need to treat it gently. Good job with Otto ya Bum.
You're doing well man... I don't stress if a boat is above MY anchor, means they are TOO BLOODY CLOSE... Hate it when they anchor right on top of you... Always fun and a you go along, you'll be able to do this with your eyes closed...lol
I don't have a lot of sailing experience. Wouldn't it be easier to motor sail with furling headsail? Seems you should never leave the cockpit if you use the genoa, except to handle anchoring of course.
Not when your going dead into the wind. It’s mainly all motor but the main helps to stabilize and does give a little power. With the Genoa I have to fall off a lot more to keep wind in it.
Yes Auto pilot is your friend, engine a much, remote electric windless would be amazing. You did well sir! Do it every day for a month or two and you will be very salty.
When solo sailing without a witness never put your sails up when pulling up anchor. It's all right to use your sale with dropping and setting your anchor.
Maybe i missed this, but why did you raise the sails IN the anchorage? That seems to be a bad idea for an insecure solo sailor. Be safe, and motor to a better place to raise the sails, until you are a confident (solo) sailor. PS: Practicing the jive in a safe place ... pro move 💪
Joel....buddy....you must quit running up and down the deck.....ESPECIALLY when the boat is moving! If you slip and fall overboard......or crack your skull....or worse yet crack your skull and THEN fall overboard......and then you're dead....or treading water while you watch your boat move away!!!
Still after how many years sailing this boat you have no confidence in your ability to sail your boat? And you don't seem to enjoy sailing. my suggestion to you is to do some soul-searching and see if you want to do something else
What are you talking about? I’ve been sailing for decades and I still get nervous. Joel is having a grand old time. Your comment is really out of sync with the channel and Joel himself
This is actually my first time sailing it solo. I completely different ball of wax. I thought I was having a pretty great time out there lol. Maybe you didn’t stay and watch.
Joel choses to "go to the moon and do the other things not because they are easy, but *because* they are hard... because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept."

I personally think your videos will fly bigtime if you continue this solo sailing adventure 😊

Dude was cool about it and had the right solution.
I was shocked by how chill he was about the whole thing!

Way better than the last video! You got it under control. So happy to see you back on your boat
Nice work on the autopilot Joel!! You are learning troubleshooting techniques!!

nice job dude. stuff will go sideways with regularity... you stayed cool and humble. be proud that anger was not your go-to emotion. you are winning.
I wish Michal would send you the manual windlass that I bought for your boat 2 years ago along with the dodger.

You can do it! Great job.
You will have to get a windless electric from inside cockpit also from the front as well as Manuel too.
Thanks Joel, good job.
Great single hand shakedown! Ur getting her there.

Great Job Joel.....great to see you making progress....
Well Done Joel.
You're a •Good• man!

a windlass?
A Windlass?
YOUR *KINGDOM* FOR A WINDLASS‽
You should add a temp sensor with a needle gauge in the cockpit to allay your engine fears.
Agreed, currently my temp gauge is not functioning. It is on the list but didn’t get that far with the time I had.
skipper challenges , no harm no foul, keep it real…Way to learn on the horizon.
Excellent episode !!!❤
Go go go Joel , living the dream 🤙🏻
I’m from Louisiana too, and you’ll never find more chill people ever.
I was blown away by his chillness 😎

You definitely need a self tailing winch for the main sheet to make it easier for you to control the main
Joel becomes ...... ERNEST (Jim Varney) .......Joel on the Boat!
Bahaha so true! Ernest was my favorite dude to watch growing up.
You did just fine...cheers
awesome video, Joel. Can't wait for the next one!
Looks like a good lesson in choosing your sailing weather. Looks a bit sporty for a shake-down. Good job overall tho, brother-man.
You did such a great job. I really miss my buddy.
Michele!!! Miss you too. Amelia is not the same with out you.
Nice work! Wonder if you could use a winch on the mast to haul the anchor?
Great thinking!! Thanks Bill. Miss you dude
I motor sail a lot, its often easier and very comfortable.
Thank you

Sorry, engine a must!
I'm no sailor but would you be able to use a winch to help bring up the anchor?
Maybe but it wouldn’t help with the chain which is really the only part I lift by hand.
Make that traveler fast before all of that please.
There are several older women who sail solo and have very informative youtube channels.
Love it!
Joel, love your videos. You ever heard of a boom break? Check it out. Great for jibes.
When solo sailing without a witness never put your sails up when pulling up anchor. It's all right to use your sale with dropping and setting your anchor.
Why? I do it all the time. Just leave the mainsheet loose, haul and secure ground tackle and off you go sailing.
Yeah!

Thank you! You’ve been around for such a looong time and I always appreciate your feedback. This will go far on dollar EC wing night 😋

Because I’m solo and it is much easier to do before being under way. Just one less thing I have to do when I’m out there.
In this situation it probably would have been better to have waited until the anchor was pulled but before I got out of the harbor.
Solo? -> Jack lines...
👍
Looks like your getting your sea legs
