- Smash Drums on the Oculus Quest 2 really is my favourite VR game of 2021 so far and easily, in my opinion, the best VR rhythm game since Beat Saber exploded onto the scene all those years ago. Now, a lot of that is of course just personal preference but certain things can't be denied, Smash Drums gameplay loop is exceptionally addictive & manages to perfectly captured that "just one more song" mentality whilst also giving players something meaningful to work towards and unlock in the form of new drumkit skins, songs & customisation options. I've not felt myself sink into the flow state quite like this since those early says of Guitar Hero and Rockband mania, Smash Drums is a fantastic addition to any VR owners library & I hope to see it grow and succeed over time.

In this Smash Drums review / Smash Drums Oculus Quest 2 gameplay video I'll showcase a few songs and hopefully explain just why Smash Drums has managed to capture my excitement over the last few weeks I've spent playing with it. For anyone who's been in a band, or just those who love the feeling of perfecting a song in a rhythm game, Smash Drums fundamentally nails the feeling of playing these songs in VR. Needing to hit certain beats with varying degrees of intensity adds a strategic element to the game that I really wasn't expecting, it's not enough to simply hit all the notes in this VR drumming game / VR drums game, you have to make sure you're applying the right pressure to the hits to match the intensity of that moment in the song. Timing, strength & aim are all areas you need to master if you hope to hit the covetted 5 star rating on each song (something I haven't managed to do on a single song yet) but regardless of the score you achieve you'll no doubt be returning to Smash Drums countless times because of the pure enjoyment of the experience.
If Smash Drums continues to grow & evolve it won't just be one of the best VR rhythm games but it will easily become one of the best Quest 2 games period!

Just imagine if you could actually make a co-op band!! And add ppl to your own personal BAND, with even coming up with ya own ( band name ) So one on drums, one on guitar.. one singing for example!

My parents bought me a Muppet drum set when I was 5, I had it for 2 days. Seems they did not anticipate being woken up at 5am with their son doing an Animal impression. I could have been the next Bonham! I ended up on guitar and since lockdown the ukulele. All this to say I am buying this GAME!

Plus, I know she is under the recommended age for VR but she adores it. I was playing console games under that age so this is the new form and we shouldn't be frowned upon for letting them play. 10:00 this perfectly summarizes my experience with the game & I think that’s why I love it so much. Once you get into it it’s so rewarding to get into that groove and just jam out.

I had to replay the whole video and watched the kitty the whole time the 2nd time! LOL I didn't even notice the 1st time I watched the video! Adorable cat and the game looks really fun! I def will try it out when I get me a VR Headset again~
So I've been playing drums IRL for 25 years and I'm legendarily crappy at any rock band/guitar hero/beat saber type games because it's just so hard for me to break my muscle memory. If this had a foot pedal I'd probably be okay but it will be rough to try to skip certain hits elsewhere but then play bass drum with my hand. BUT I highly approve of this game, may buy it for the kids haha.
The footpedal thing is the reason I couldn't get into Paradiddle from the Sidequest store, my foot was tapping away and I was dying for that to translate into the drums in game. A foot pedal peripheral for these drumming games would be an absolute game changer
@@BeardoBenjo indeed. Could be quite simple really, the quest can just use its cameras to see a light blink on thats actuated by a little pad you sit on the floor to stomp on. No Bluetooth or anything required. Maybe just a velcro strap around your knee with the led strip. 5 dollar item.

Looks pretty nice.Probably less exhausting than Ragnarock and the different strenght hits is something I hope the devs will add that still recommend Ragnarock 100% might copp this game in addition.
Ragnarock is so damn good but yeah its crazy intense, even some of the medium difficulty songs destroy me 🤣

I wonder...I have a blue tooth pedal board that has four switches to change presets in a guitar app. Wouldn't be hard to make something with that being possible.

I can't help but notice that the snare drum for example is hit in different places.
Also hitting the base drum notes with your hands is not ideal, they should have that set to auto hit IMO.
There's a game from the creators of Synth Riders called Ragnarock that is very similar to this that will probably end up making it's way to Quest 2 at some point. The soundtrack is Fantasy/Viking Metal. Right now it's only on Early access on Steam, but once it fully releases I would be very surprised if there isn't a Quest version.

I played SO MUCH of the Rock Band drums and recently had to throw them out. This looks like a great replacement! Can't wait to try it out. Great content as always Benjo!
Haha same here, I held onto mine for YEEEARS but it was time to let them go at the end of last year sadly. Whenever I head to a friend of mines house we still bust his full Rockband kit out though 😎 this is a great replacement, I'm absolutely loving it
@@BeardoBenjo I am too. I'm surprised at how... Bad I am at it? I was comfortable doing hard/expert on Rockband but certainly not here! I really hope there's an avenue for custom tracks! All in all, it's an amazing game and I keep coming back.

How lucky of me, I got my quest 2 like 2 months ago *maybe* and I one of the first things I said I wanted was a drumming rhythm game. Beatsaber is cool but I've always wanted to learn how to drum and I randomly found the demo when looking to App Lab Games. So hyped

This looks great but as the music is rock focused it won’t be for me. I was hopping for some funky drum songs, hip hop beats as well. But I will say for the rock crowd who have had to put up with cheesy EDM in a lot of VR rhythm games over the years this must be a godsend. Enjoy

I'd like to see future songs go down that root, especially stuff with a bit more of a hip hop focus. Playing the songs with the offbeats is my favourite so many even sneak some ska or reggae in there for me 😎

So I think one of the single largest thing that makes BeatSaber so great is the modding community, primarily custom songs. Does Smash Drums support this / are there plans to? There are so many songs that I know I would want to play that would be too niche for the devs to include.
I'd LOVE to see modding come to this game, I know there are plans to implement more songs post launch but I've no idea about mods or even how easy it would be to mod something like this 🤔 fingers crossed, there are LOTS of songs I'd like to drum along to
The thing is mods are entirely down to the community to create and put in place so it’s not something the development team can influence. Music copyright licencing laws are very strict and devs CANNOT announce support of mods etc
@@GetToDaChoppaVR It is indeed down to the community to create them, sure (and as a modder, I'd be more than happy to contribute my efforts), however, the devs do have a choice as to whether they want their game to easily support mods or not. For instance, if they have a folder that the game reads in mp3s and "map files" that contain plain text information for the map, that is good modding support for custom songs. And they absolutely can advertise modding support for custom songs without infringing on copyright law. As long as they are not hosting our custom songs for download, then they are fine. They are not responsible for what users create and share on 3rd party sites.
I think the community needs to grow a bit before that gets made

Have you tried unplugged yet? They said last year that they would offer a song editor to do custom songs but I couldn't find any more info other than their twitter post so i'm not sure if they implemented it yet. I have yet to purchase it due to that.

Yeah I'd love some opinions on that. Personally I could care less if it doesn't disrupt gameplay. But if I'm having to close ads to continue a game I'll chuck my oculus quite quickly and go buy a PCVR set.

Why is every VR content creator paid off like this? The developers even put him in the game to get him to shill their game. Difficult to take any of these opinions seriously when the big VR channels are reading PR scripts.
Would be better if it was a stationary kit that you could build upon as you progress until it looks like Neil Pert's kit. Lol.
just bought the game, am I drummer in rl, so i jumped in and figured "normal" should be a fun first impression. played a couple rounds, but I really got problems with the hit detection. Im hitting the drum (to me its obvious) but the game often times doesnt register it as a hit. .. something wrong with my Quest 2, something wrong with me ? should I maybe not be standing? Im at my wits ends :D
adjust the height option, and sit like a drummer would. On a stool type thing preferably. That's how i get the most accurate results

Awesome game and great showcasing by Beardo. Who sings "Afterlight"? A superb song and almost symphonic.
So this is... By far... My favorite rythym game on the quest. I love this.
However... I would love them to create a 'drummers mode' where the drums are fixed and you have to play them LIKE a real drummer... Because currently, it doesn't play like a drums game... The music is amazing though.
I know it wasn't designed as a 'drum simulator' but I think it has the bones for it. They just need to add a mode for fixed drum locations (or even custom drum locations)

I see the devs have added 9 more songs in the variation 2.0 update, so are there now 39 in total or 30 as it says in the games description. Cheers.

My dream of becoming a drummer has been made real!
Hopefully this game will actually make people want to play an acoustic drum kit or an electric one.
to me this game feels more like a gimmick than an improvement on beatsaber.
I've played drums for years.
as a drummer the game really leaves you wanting more. the rhythm feels off entirely (have played drums for 10+ years myself). the soundtrack they went with also leaves a lot to be desired; most of the songs in the game all feel like different versions of the same 1 or 2 songs.
This is NOT a game for real drummers. I'm currently learning.
But I think they COULD make it a game that could appeal to real drummers. Fixing the drum locations (kick drum and high hats, of course, are not possible without full body tracking.)
But they could definitely get it closer.
@@crooker2 as long as i'm not 'hitting' anything physical it will never be the same. some beatsaber maps give my brain a good vibe doing ryhtme but thats it.

This game is fricken amazing 👏 🙌 I totally agree it's very addictive with the "ooone MORE TIME" sanero 😂 I'm already in the top 11% for one of the tracks/ songs done on ( medium ) I surprised myself with this game.
Having tried out drums 🥁 many years ago in my 20's i thought I'd give in & give it a try and purchase the game. And I'm SOO GLAD i did.

Any real life drummers have an opinion as to how useful this game seems with regard to helping develope the timing for drumming in real life...obviously not the physical skills but timing?

Thats a interesting game but what i dont like is that you have to do the kickdrum too but what are you going to do when you play on the hardest difficulty? Can it be turned off that you dont need to do the kick drum like it is on Rock band?

Played hard much better and changed options from 360 mode to forward changed my whole experience. Worth my 15 dollars
Have you tried Ragnarock yet? I really got the same flow feeling from it and enjoyed the setting more.
I have finally tried Ragnarock, its absolutely wonderful! For me I prefer the songs in Smash Drums, it feels a little truer to the "Guitar Hero experience" that I've been trying to find these last few years but Ragnarock is definitely worth owning and I can see it appealing to a very different audience in terms of music taste
A plus for Ragnarock over Smash Drums at the moment, is that you can add custom songs/mappings to it. So you can drum to your favorite song instead of just the ones built in. Hopping they add that option to this.

Hey Ben dude... So... how does it feel as a drummer to play this? I have several drum sims and the one issue with them all is no feedback when you hit the skin or cymbal, do you get that in this, especially with doubles and triples where you'd use the "bounce" to help bring the stick up.

IMO, no. For the simple fact that I can smash drums to Alestorm and Gloryhammer. No matter how good a rythym game plays, it's is made or broken by the music and unfortunately, the music on here is generic Getty image type songs.

I think you may have this confused this with something else as there is no button use in this game at all.

No because your arm with the watch is moving everywhere from the drumming so it thinks you’re moving around on your feet a lot
