  • The Top 24 fishermen in the U.S. compete in the second annual Bassmaster Classic in 1972. All of the anglers used the same boat rigs on the surprise location of Percy Priest Reservoir in Tennessee. Fishing fans will recognize Bill Dance, Bobby Murray and Ricky Green in this video from the first catch-and-release Bassmaster Classic. The first member of the Bass Angler Sportsman Society wins the top prize of $10,000.

Ray Scott was a natural in front of the camera. The man deserves all the success he has had!

Those old boat are a classic. I would love to have one of those old Rangers this day and time. Completely all original and restored. Original old Mercury motor. I would fish the heck out of that boat today! I just like a old classic boat as well as old trucks and cars.

Sara, get Bass to do the classic in this same way. Give everyone the same boat and gear and see who wins...
    Thanks for putting these up.

no! and you heard this guy at the end - it was a rainy crappy day and he just downsized his spinnerbait in the back of a creek. At that same point, these lakes probably weren't pressured as much as they are now.

My first bass boat was an old 70’s Terry tri-hull.

Wish they would have a throwback tournament, no electronics other than a sounder put them on a small lake that none or few have fished.

Ray Scott amazed me. He was a hustler, he got out there and really sold this dream.
Those boats...the blast off in those is scary to watch today. The boats were pretty dinky..good boats but small. If I'm not mistaken the blast off was done away with after two guys drowned when their boat motor stalled and a wake cover over their stern and sunk them immediately in a club tournament?

lol those orange jump suits. GMan wears one on the Ike show lol I gotta say though, if those boats sold out after 2 hours after the tournament... like to see that on a new set of Rangers ;)

This is the year Fred C Young's Big O became a sought after lure. Fred was trained by Boots Anderson in east Tennessee while Boots was making the "Tennessee Shad" lure. These crankbaits were the first square bills made and after this Classic everyone wanted to know what they were and where they could get them, the rest if history.

It would be cool to see how we would fair with today's knowledge of techniques, using 72' gear in this setting.....We'd probably get our @55 handed back to us.

I think just getting the equipment would be hard and costly! One of the BASS member magazines (BASS Times maybe) does a "what it's worth" article on those old baits and some of them are 100's of dollars.
