This is how I remember bass fishing. I was 13 years old. We had a 16 ft V bottom Aluminum boat 40 Johnson and a trolling motor. We could go any where the other bass boats went. It was a great time in fishing. Shawn
I posted this on the ‘71 Classic thread. I just saw that BassCat is building their 1971 vintage model this year for their 50th anniversary. It’s rated for a 115 hp. 16’ boat that will fit in any garage. I bet it flies with a 115! Really neat boat.
The good ole days...all of them gentlemen and good sportsmen. Listen to the way the speak, no egos, just enjoying the sport and sharing their knowledge.
Love watching these old classics and seeing all the great pioneers of bass fishing and remembering the simpler times of tournament fishing....love these videos and hope you post more of them...THANKS RM!!
Pls upload '74, '75, '76, et al!!! These are awesome classics!!!! So many untold stories!!! I see Scott so much in younger Roland!!! What a cool story this whole thing is!!!! I love me some finshin!!!! Whoo hoo!!!!

Bassmaster I know I found them right after I posted that comment. Thanks for the reply & love watching the old vids when I was a kid! Keep up the good work. ATB!
Grew up fishing Clarks Hill Lake, watching Bill Dance, Roland Martin and ole Jimmie Houston. My dad and I bream, crappie and bass fished all over Clarks Hill. Now my son and I do and he has dreams of making the BASS classic. He does the BASS high school tournaments and loves it. These old videos bring back a lot of good memories.
I did to , I've fished Clark's hill my entire life , it might be my imagination or I've become a better fisherman but I think they're more big bass in the lake than there was back in the 70s , probably has to do to the introduction of the blue backs .
I dont care anything about todays bass tournaments. A bunch of rich boys in 150k rigs. But I could really get back into watching tournaments like this.
Between Bill Dance, Roland Martin, and Jimmy Huston , I don't know which one I would consider my favorite. My favorite is my uncle James. We fished a lot together. He showed me a lot. RIP uncle James
Yes he has….. the only person I wanted and have an autograph from on a $1 bill….. my dad met him around the time of this video but I wasn’t born til two years later when my dad met and shook his hand at Puglia’s in Gretna, LA and dawgged him for years “How’s you meet the greatest bass fisherman ever and don’t get him to aign anything”…. So when I finally met him at the convention center in New Orleans, LA I only had that bill that I could get signed. I shook his hand got the autograph all well tell him that story….. true story
YOU like these simpler boats? They didn't have the neon boats yet of even the 1980s I saw Roland in one rented video in the 1980s where he was using one if them silver aluminum boats you could jab a hole in with a pencil I liked the RANGER boats on the 1980s tv shows
I fished out of one of those boats - Don Butler had won the classic and had one. I was guiding on Sam Rayburn then and Don brought his classic boat down from Tulsa and wanted to use it one day. I had a 16’ Skeeter Hawk with 80 Mercury, rear trolling motor. A year or two later another guide customer, Tom Black from Lawrence Kansas, bought one of the classic boats - Ray Scott had started selling them off - and he towed it down to Rayburn and we used it one day. I didn’t like the middle console; preferred having all my controls in one place. Still do.
What ever floats your boat- but I don't like to get in a big rush when I go fishing- they have taken a leisure activity and turned it into work- way to go fellows.
I want one of those boats!! You can almost here Roland now. "I don't need no stinking kill switch" I learned something. Fish near a Bee hive because you know nobody else has fished there before.
Tournament fishing is ridiculous today. I was 7 years old in 73. So, I'm not biased. I've tried watching modern tournament fishing. It's so over the top / can't relate. $100,000 21 foot boats with 300hp motors and from 6 to 8 giant monitors. Bass fishing contests are no longer the every man sport. Lastly, the guys from years gone by were genuine and easy to like. There's just very little depth/soul to relate too. Greed did it in.
I'm just waiting for the 70s woman to come strolling out and then Roland Martin and the fisherman start getting to work on her. "Look what we caught boys!". "Hi boys, did someone put their worm in my mouth?". Ha ha ha, 70s were hilarious.
The depth sounder is the part that shows how far we have come... At the helm of my Gambler Elite/merc 300 ProXS v8 I'm running a HDSLIVE12 AND A HDSLIVE16 and two HDSLIVE9s on the front deck.... They got depth flashers back then and I can literally watch fish on my HDS live systems.. I have literally watched fish move to the jig and see them become one as I feel the strike on my HDS units... I mean there's a big diff in the hulls and out boards, rods and reels and so on but at the end of the day that boat floats, has a trolling motor and a outboard just as my 21 foot tourney boat does today... The electronics are what really blows my mind, I can pull up on brush piles and easily tell the difference between crappie and bass on my units but hey they had a water temp sensor as well!! Lol... We sure have came along ways... My bass boat was 91k the electronics and two power poles was another 12k once all was said and done I wrote a check for.. Yeah we have came a long ways... In the day of 100k tourney rigs
FUN FACT !!!!!!! SCOTT MARTIN IS NAMED AFTER RAY SCOTT. ROLAND CALLED RAY AFTER THEY GAVE BIRTH TO HIS SON AND TOLD HIM THEY HAD A BOY BUT HADN'T PICKED A NAME. RAY TOLD ROLAND IF HE NAMED HIM AFTER HIM HE WOULD GIVE ROLAND MARTIN SON A FREE LIFETIME MEMBERSHIP TO THE BASS CLASSIC ELITE. ROLAND WIFE DIDN'T THINK RAY FIT SO THEY NAMED HIM SCOTT! LOL! SERIOUSLY
B.A.S.S. invited the outdoor writers to compete among themselves for the daily big bass on one practice day and the 3 competition days. Winners were Robert Melvin (won 2 days), Mike Haynes and Reeves Field.
I doubt it. Back then catch-and-release fishermen were rare, you caught bass and ate them. The BASS, and this tournament, really started catch-and-release bass fishing. So I'd guess that there's larger and more bass today than back then.
What Roland Martin said about structure fishing and hiw he does it is a lie he stole in info from buck perry and changed it to were he dosent trI'll cause rule say no trolling allowed. And tryed useing the style diffrent BUT he states he caught 5 small fish well he clearly was wrong on how to do it.
These videos are simply amazing. RIP Mr Scott
Billy Dance is a better fisher
This is how I remember bass fishing. I was 13 years old. We had a 16 ft V bottom Aluminum boat 40 Johnson and a trolling motor. We could go any where the other bass boats went. It was a great time in fishing. Shawn
Great memories, I can relate to the fact that you had a boat that could take you anywhere!
pretty incredible how good those boats were almost 50 years ago. id take one of those right now no question lol
I know right I always thought those boats were awesome.
I posted this on the ‘71 Classic thread. I just saw that BassCat is building their 1971 vintage model this year for their 50th anniversary. It’s rated for a 115 hp. 16’ boat that will fit in any garage. I bet it flies with a 115! Really neat boat.
Had a guy in my club with one. It was like a 90 hp tub but so fun. RIP Jim Watson
I have a 73 kingfisher with a Johnson 55.. still catching fish 51 years later
Yeah those boats would float in six inches of water.
We could all learn a lot from there graciousness and sportsmanship.
Check out my Dad's FB page......Rayo Breckenridge.

It's crazy how far the sport has come. Amazing.
I know. People actually used boats, fishing poles hooks and bait to catch fish back then??
@@toscodav eh honestly bass fishing now is way better 0 doubt
So freaking amazing man. When I found these I clicked and just stood there staring in amazement

"roland martin fishes right through his lunch break" I busted out laughing seeing that white bread sandwhich hanging out his mouth
Now that is the REAL classic.
These men are what make The Bass Masters... " Classic "
best part was when the guy burned his line with his cigarette to retie lol
KingFishing i do the same thing lol
That's a man right there :)
Rayo Breckenridge
@@joeybreckenridge3435 I do miss your dad, Rayo. The man who burned his line in this film at 14:38 was Wendell Mann.
Bassmaster should do a throwback series and make anglers use these old boats. That would be amazing.
Roland Martin showed me what I know............
Until Babe Winkleman came along
same
This is purely awesome to watch these guys in their Prime
The year I was born, had to watch it. I remember those type boats from my childhood. Raised so old-school I still won't try a baitcaster, hahaha.
Baitcasters are much older then spinning reels. So if you're really that oldschool you would use an Ambassador or something.
I dont care anything about todays bass tournaments. A bunch of rich boys in 150k rigs. But I could really get back into watching tournaments like this.
aahhh the good ole days
Awsome to go back and relive the old days......Keep'em comin
I love bass fishing. This is awesome
Very nice 👍🏽 video enjoyed it thanks.
Young Roland and Scott are like twins , even the hair style is same
so amazing thanks bassmaster

Google "Rayo Breckenridge"....great shows from a pioneer of the 70's.
Awesome....great to watch these films...
I just saw proof, Bill Dance has been Kissing Bass longer than i have been alive. I’m 44

That shirt Roland Martin has on is freaking sweet
Amazing!❤❤❤❤
hell yeah. classic
Such a wholesome events back in the day. Ray really knew how to put on a first class event.
Roland Martin was only 33 in this video!
and looks just like Scott haha.
awesome boats

This is so cool
Your the best rowland.
Now they bring the whole garage of baits and military grade submarine sonars
Showed this to my grandpa he said he watched this one already
The beginning segment shots and narration give the video a life or death feel,no color commentary here, this is serious ass shi* lol
Such a simpler time and place, if we could only go back.
2021 Bassmaster Classic should make the guys use those boats and electronics.
Amazing they all have identical boats, I wonder if they got to keep them after the tournament?
I fished out of one of those boats - Don Butler had won the classic and had one. I was guiding on Sam Rayburn then and Don brought his classic boat down from Tulsa and wanted to use it one day. I had a 16’ Skeeter Hawk with 80 Mercury, rear trolling motor.

I actually enjoyed this more than this years masters. The fisherman now are frantic and rude.
Imagine how interesting the bassmaster would be if they all had to use this stuff and not the special electronics that they use today
I agree, no phones, no mega super duper resolution 3D graphs, just a gassed-up boat, a net, 8-9 rods and fishing tackle.
Dang them drone shots were good lol
That's a big ass drone lol
Those old power poles with the rope on then are cool lookin
They are more quiet and reliable
Yeah and hold you in deeper then 8 foot.
Did the Anglers get to keep the boat? Because I want one!!!
No sir, they did not.
This is so kool👍
How far we've come with boats electronics lol
Not as far as I thought. Roland had a device in this vid I would have never thought.
Im 13 and prefer not to use them it seems like cheating because you get a machine to find them and not put effort
Oxygen monitor? New one on me and I’ve been around a long while.
can you please upload the next bassmaster classic
15k back then was a LOT
I'd still would turn it down , especially for three days work
Average pay a week was 110 dollar's lol
Equal to about 80k 😭
@@drinkthekoolaidkids You are special?
@@Harpplayer504 what do you mean Nolan .
Still learning from Roland Martin, Jimmy Houston, Hank Parker and Bill Dance on UA-cam.
I'd kill for one of those boats in mint condition , with all of the stuff inside.
Apparently those boats sold for around 3'500 bucks. I wish I could find that boat today going for that price.
Just one of my graphs cost more then that whole rig... One of my HDSlive16 cost more then that entire rig... That's flipping insane
What ever floats your boat- but I don't like to get in a big rush when I go fishing- they have taken a leisure activity and turned it into work- way to go fellows.
look at those boats
Crazy how good the boats are today compared to back then
I like em both. The new boats are less accessible for the average redneck unfortunately
I want one of those boats!! You can almost here Roland now. "I don't need no stinking kill switch"
I learned something. Fish near a Bee hive because you know nobody else has fished there before.
Yeah the bass lurking below waiting for one to swoop down to close to the water and get his lunch
8 years before I was born
Sssooo... Only 284 likes for the 1973 BASS MASTER CLASSIC??? WTF?
WOW!! You listen to Roland back then. And he is saying the samething today. Still likes those structures. And them Plastics worms
EPIC !!!!@@

Why are both people in the boat fishing?
B.A.S.S. invited the outdoor writers to compete among themselves for the daily big bass on one practice day and the 3 competition days. Winners were Robert Melvin (won 2 days), Mike Haynes and Reeves Field.
Classic
How come all the boats are exactly the same
So every angler has the same boat with the same equipment (fishing tackle excluded) so none had an unfair advantage.
That sure sounds like Phil Robertson.
Absolutely. Great call. Holy crap. It's got to be him. Lol.
a limit of 10 and hopes of 15 pounds. man now we hope for 20+ on 5 fish
Piece of cake with today's equipment
Jeez ten fish limit?
Used to be 15.
I bet there were so many more hogs back in those days then there are now.
I doubt it. Back then catch-and-release fishermen were rare, you caught bass and ate them. The BASS, and this tournament, really started catch-and-release bass fishing. So I'd guess that there's larger and more bass today than back then.
Why do they all have the same exact boat LOL?
Ranger furnished the boats for all the earlier tournaments, they were all rigged exactly alike.
Even playing field, that's why.
No wonder Roland was an officer, he knows how to use his head.
Anyone notice the hookset ninja sound effects? 😂😂😂
No braid, no carbon fibre, no tungsten and apparently you can still catch fish!
Less pressure
Roland I hope Ray knew Jesus
All those noodle rods...could not set the hook...it has come a long way
