On the April 26 episode of “SoCal Update,” KPCC Science Reporter Jacob Margolis talks about a community science experiment he launched to make climate change’s impact on air pollution more tangible. It involves handing out special beans that, when grown, show when they’re being damaged by ozone.

I grew up in OC in the 1970s. Before catalytic converters and factory emission limits, stage 3 smog alerts were common. You could see the particulate matter in the air. Recesses were often cancelled. Childhood asthma was common.
Fast forward 50 years and the amount of cars has quintupled yet its not as bad as it was in 1970.
Did they still have leaded gasoline when you were a kid?
I remember in the 70s it was so bad that we were sent home from work. It was so heavy one barely was able to see 2 1/2blocks. In 89 I went to the mountains, from the beach, that when we were heading home it was so bad we couldn't see down the mountains to the flat land.
Where is the update on this?

Some images you are showing are of morning haze, not air pollution. Los Angeles didn't even look that bad in the 70's.
