First off im a huge fan (been watching 2013). ok so I told my school about you guys, then the bought a bunch of easy gliders for us to build then they called you AND we are going on a field trip to flite test on the 12th or 13th! see yall then and cant wait for flite fest again
You should shop the B-17 or some version of it to the USFS they using pong ball filled with a combustible mixture to start back fires to create a barrier to the 🔥 .
@@FliteTestincorporate an accordion baffle into tubby bubby bomb and the whistle effect design. It will let the bomb temporarily crush and force out whatever innards U choose. The whistle sound is also the best idea and adds to the suspense and excitement. Apologize if already said. I haven’t read all the responses.
I wonder. For the bomb make like a air pocket in the front, so that when it hits the ground gravity will force the air backwards thought a narrow opening( like a ball nozzle) and blow the powder out the back. So basically a Large pipet. Amazing plane and video!
You guys have the best job in the world. Being able to do what you love every day is a rare thing in life. Love these types of videos and projects, keep them coming.
Our local Commemorative Air Force wing has an annual open house, where they drop pumpkins out of their B-25. You could easily drop a small pumpkin out of your B-17. 😊
May I suggest a tube inside the bomb with holes around the front end and a piston of sorts in the rear end. Talc would fill around the tube and on impact the piston would force air from the front of the tube displacing the talc out the rear. Maybe even create some extra vents between the fins of the bomb for a better spread of the talc.
Back in the 70's, I designed and built a nine-ft R/C with a bomb bay big enough to hold and drop 2 ltr plastic bottles of water. When they hit, the water would virtually disappear, leaving scraps of extremely stretched plastic behind. This was done in the desert; anyplace else would be too hazardous.
A egg tossing contest went off predictably when a multiple bar picnic was held at the lakefront by Wellington in Chicago during the late 70's. Dale, the owner of the Old English Pub, showed how wonderful his arm was with some he pitched higher than the old trees there. One party animal was hit in the head. Another was a sun bather who got hit in a compromising place that I would not have believed had happened if I didn't witness it. If we only had a couple planes like that.
Love it! Already have mine but haven't started the build yet. I'm a little concerned about tearing off the bomb bay doors landing on my grass field. I think I want to look into designing an open/close mechanism for the doors.
Take a small balloon fill it up to breaking point. Ad a pin, to the inside front of the bomb. Cover the pin with foam. Not to much you want the pin to puncture the balloon at impact. Then you put your baking soda, baby powder, flour or what ever you wish In a tube, toilet roll between the balloon and the flap. Impact, pop goes the balloon and all that air needs somewhere to go, the flap being the only way.
I used to drop a talc bomb that split in half on impact, it made a awesome poof on impact, I also took a 10 paint ball refill tube and put a door over the opening that a servo slid back and let the balls fall out the bottom of the plane
Guys this was a great video first time viewer, I don’t know how to do this ,make the bomb with a screw in nose piece, i have seen on air soft games they have co2 hand grenade, maybe you can use something like that mechanism that pop the co tube when it hits the ground, thanks for great video
Worthy of a Quarter teaspoon of 1F & a 209 shotgun primer, common nail & chambered in a carboard tube . Big boom , plently White smoke . Rotten egg smell a plus . ( Your results may vary. )
you should put in two live feed cameras, one for the pilot and one for the bombardier, and also put in two led panels for the front windows to make them look like eyes
Fill the bomb bay with Holi-Powder. It would make a pretty awesome trail. Alternately tweak the bomb bay to be watertight with a valve instead of doors and make it a water bomber!
Maybe look at a pull rope system on a linear actuator to close the doors after the drop. Also, put a carton or something inside the bay and gradually fill with sand to find both the flight load limit and the doors load limit.
It would be cool to put a little chute in the bottom of the bomb bay so that only one golf ball could come out at once, so that they get released sequentially, rather than all at once.
On the Rustoleum 2X if it doesn't dry quick enough just clear over it with 2X and it will make it dry fast. For the bomb just make the flap wider opening. Maybe make the bomb itself with thinner sidewalls. How about real thin sidewall with a big spring inside that will let the Bomb collapse. Maybe flexible dryer vent pipe with your nose and tail you have.
To make the powder shoot out the back of the bomb, you need to decrease the interior volume on impact. A rubber or otherwise compressible nose should do it.
A balloon is very low PSI and if anything cushioned the landing for the powder. I suggest making the nose of the bomb soft enough to deform and turn the device into a puffer. Use the force of the landing to push a larger volume of air through a narrower tube to accelerate, with a cup at the back of the bomb, where you place the powder. Upon landing, the puffed air is channeled through the bottom of the cup, expelling the powder. Put a little paper on the bottom of the cup to keep the powder from falling into the air chamber in the nose. Maybe you can even add something at the tail end of the bomb that helps distribute the expelled powder in a more realistic manner. If the puffer isn't powerful enough, but seems to be working, add some extra weight, or change the amount of powder or try different sized blow-tubes.
Actually, if you forget about the tube and just have a hole in the bottom of the cup in the rear, it might work just as well or better, and would be easier to test nozzle hole sizes, because you could start with a smaller hole and then increase using drill bits instead of 3D printing different sized tubes. Also, the single hole might work great, but perhaps multiple smaller holes would be better. Or perhaps one hole but with a flat disk at the bottom of the cup that forces the air into the corners of the cup and might really clear the powder out most efficiently, and should create turbulence that might help stir up the powder/air mixture better as it's ejected.
If you cover the bottom of the cup with a single piece of paper, it might tend to eject the powder in a clump. If you use a bunch of little pieces of paper, or better yet, some crushed, dried leaves collected on the property, it should let the air and powder mix better as it's ejected.
If you add weight to increase the blowing power, it needs to be affixed behind the part of the bomb that is expected to deform and puff the air. You could also add weight to the nose to improve the center of gravity, but it won't increase the force applied to the puffer.
How to egg your neighbors from 500ft. OR... glitter or confetti drops, LED lights or glowsticks on parachutes or ribbons for night time fun, maybe some paper helicopters? a scaled up giant one would definitely carry a pumpkin for Halloween drops.... or a jack-o-lantern with a strobe in it on a parachute?
Id still like to see you drop an rc helicopter from a plane simmiller to what you did with the Guinea pig and the Punjet and im sure an XL tubby would do it to
The puppy at the start in the plane reminded me of the one scene from the live action Scooby doo movie where scrappy doo pops out and yells “Puppy power!!!”
Just got a turbo timber evolution. First big plane I have ever had. Actually it gets here on Friday. Wondering if you could build one of those opening doors on it? I also have a slow ultra stick and it would be really cool to put some mods on it.
Add this: FPV camera facing straight down, second person acts as "Bombadiere" see how fancy you can get by knowing altitude and airspeed 'calculate' when to drop
My idea's for some things to try with the big version. Several 12 inch balloons, filled with water. To make a big splash. Instead of the bombs, some small bags of flour. The snaps that look like small sticks, with a number taped together, so the ends are all level, should make a loud bang, if dropped on the runway..
Congratulations, another beautiful plane in the collection of wonderful machines. ¿Is there any possibility of Tutor's plans being shared for free? Happy landings.
@FliteTest i still think you should do Air to air combat with airsoft! maybe you could have a fleet of B-17s and some fighters or just a dogfight between a BF-109 or FW-190 and a P-51 or Spitfire!
OH! got another idea, tangential to the "bomb". If you add modern R/C telemetry... you have added 2 new dynamics to the classic egg drop contest in science class. First, a dimensional limit from the bomb bay. Second, the designer gets to choose how high/fast they want to drop their egg!
Just to point out, the B-17 didn't actually have that big of a bomb bay, max 12,800lbs but typically only 4000lbs due to fuel load true the Liberator carried less but both were dwarfed by the Lancaster's bomb bay (22,000lbs).
You should Revisit the guided bomb video, make a giant bomb that a friend can control, design it to fit In the XL. Version maybe do a contest with the whole flite crew to see who can get closer to the target?
maybe 3d print a bomb nosecone that would spray glue to a balloon filled with a mix of powder and air. Design a sharp protrusion on the edge so when it hits the ground inertia will cause the balloon burst.
Make the bomb in two pieces that telescope one inside the other. One it would make it easy to load, and two when the bomb hits the ground it would compress length ways and spray out the contents.
lol fill the tubby bomb with caesium and water separated by a thin membrane, and seal the bomb, separating the cavities. When it hits the ground the pressure will unseal the cavities and make it go boom
8:12 There's no way you're going to get a dust explosion out of that thing all by itself. I don't care what you stuff in it. Those things need an external ignition source. If anything, you should be using the internal volume of that as an air source to push chalk through a straw out the back.

You need to add the whistle sound from nerf howler to the tubby bomb be cool for a added sound effect
That’s an awesome idea!
Surely you could design a whistle into the bomb print. A short travel plunger could be implemented to get the “poof” of powder on impact.
You should shop the B-17 or some version of it to the USFS they using pong ball filled with a combustible mixture to start back fires to create a barrier to the 🔥 .
