Dr. Andy Galpin - Part 1 | Mark Bell's PowerCast

- Dr. Andy Galpin holds a PhD. in Human Bioenergetics, and is a tenured Professor in the Center for Sport Performance at CSU Fullerton.
His research examines the acute responses and chronic adaptations of human skeletal muscle in response to high force/velocity/power and fatiguing exercise from the whole body, down to the individual muscle fiber and even into the individual DNA. Basically how the body reacts to training and other stressors. He also works with professional athletes on a consulting basis. He has a gift for making sports science relatable, and warns against fixating on one training methodology over all others. He especially warns against letting the comfortable world we've created rob us of value of being uncomfortable.
You can find Dr. Galpin at @drandygalpin on social media, and at andygalpin.com. Get his book with Brian Mackenzie “Unplugged.” You can also find him on the Barbell Shrugged and the Body of Knowledge podcast.

Is that a Rebel alliance tattoo on your leg Jim?... fucken cool.
Rebel alliance with the Jedi Order inside. And thanks
Every time I watch a podcast with Dr. Andy on it, I feel like I should be taking notes!
Andy Galpin is the MAN. Followed this guy on barbell shrugged and on his own youtube channel for years. Very knowledgeable and humble. I recommend everyone to follow this guy and learn as he talks the talk and walks the walk and explains things very well.
Any chance of getting Dr. Mike Israetel on? Would be another great sciency guy to interview.
Too bad none of these exercise scientists have any interest in the science and importance of grip strength. I know because I have personally reached out to several of them including Andy Galpin. They have no interest regardless of the fact that an individual is only as strong as the weakest link and that weak link is grip. I even offered to pay for their time at the hourly rate that they pick. No interest! I refuse to give up in bringing the science of grip strength into the conversation. I'm currently writing a book titled, The Science of Grip Strength. I have been driven by their refusal to help me in my journey so I thank them for brushing me aside simply because I'm not a well known name.
This is fucking gold guys! There's so much confusion and conflicting research and suggestions out there.
People claiming all sorts of things, everybody should eat this way, nobody should do that, this is bad, this is good,....trying to make it look as if they knew the final answer, probably partly to provide food for their (often not working) dogma and ego, and partly to fill their wallets with the money of confused and often desperate people who just wanna be healthy, strong, and/or performing at their best, who fall for fancy wording and science this, science that, oh look at me for 5 minutes in a video in which I can pump me up and make me look and perform great so you feel as if this was how the rest of my life looks like. "Oh and by the way, you don't need to put in the work and also forget about the basics that make up for like >90% of your success, just give me your money and i send you some magic pills for which I have some vague out of context science to back up that they may work."
I believe that we need to have more guys out there like Andy Galpin who put things into context, who make science something useful for real life, who aren't dogmatic and willing to let go of some dogma and focus on the important things.
I enjoy Andy. Well spoken and LISTENS as well! Easy conversation and people to listen to.
wow that shoe looks awful
DYEL ??? SRS
Andy competed as a weightlifter and was nationally ranked. Guys making all kinds of mental gains and his athletes are making gains 24/7
So it's a yes then ???
I am sorry CPA, I was rude
it's all good. I just like to have fun in the comments. I never mean any ill will. I religiously watch all Powercasts.
CPA Strength he's too busy makin scientographer gains so he doesn't have time to jacked and tan at the moment lol.
Thanks for talking about Chris Moore, we miss him a lot.
Intelligent and Humble
Followed Andy from Barbell Shrugged to Rogan and now the Powercast
That castleberry joke 😂
This is a fucking interesting Powercast. Seriously, learnt a lot again...
One of your best podcasts to date! You need to get Dr. John Berardi from PN next!

Smelly you should donate some meathead millionaire money to this guys studies!
Amazing video!! Couldn't stop watching, thanks guys
omg when Jim said "this really took a turn... for the better!" shit had me dead
I understood more of what Andy was saying on the powercast than on JRE!
"Layne is fantastic, hes not really doing a bunch of original research himself, hes not a scientist" but Layne has a PHD, which makes him an expert in everything in this industry.
So the take away be flexible and diverse.
and may all your shits be tapered
Thank you. I haven't been deadlifting very long but recently watched a video of Ed Coan coaching the deadlift at ST and have been trying new stances till I found one that worked for me. Today, I set a new PR of 315 for 5 reps. Thank you for such informative content. I greatly appreciate your outlook on how natural athletes can still learn from those who aren't. Thank you.
Nothing can be proven but everything is "exactly right ".
Find an example instance of that in the show and think for a second about it. It's probably not contradictory. You're probably conflating unrelated things.
You are right they are unrelated things. One thing is about having a conversation and enforcing the dialogue and the other is about being careful with science. Its a good thing showing caution by not suggesting something is proven because most things are rather more or less statistically accurate. And many things in in the field of training and dieting, we know rather little about. Therefore its a little ironic he don't show a similar kind of caution by very strongly stating "thats exactly right" when someone else is saying something that is in line with his own opinions. Even though it might be just a conversational thing it was something that came to my mind. Strongly appreciate what this guy is trying to do still, the content and love this channel.
Great podcast; very interesting!
Mark: Higher fiber intake has been known to greatly curve that sugar (nasty carb) craving you are speaking about in some individuals. I had a serious sweet tooth that was finally defeated by my getting more than 35 grams (sometimes as high as 50 grams) of fiber in me daily. Might give that a try someday when/if you decide to introduce some more carbs back into your diet. Cheers and respects.
Sick of hearing about keto on this channel, after the hundredth time, it gets boring
Always good info, enjoyed Andy on Joe Rogan as well
"Hey pancreas! Come over here and give me some sugar."
joerapo that was some bullshit
so fat is never directly used, just bonds converted into carbon-hydrogen bonds; thus giving you carbohydrates, right?
Yaaay! I'm on time!
xoxo,
Iya
