Ford introduced the Explorer 30 years ago, and it's been a staple of American transportation ever since, thanks to its appealing mix of versatility and value. Now in its sixth generation, the seven-passenger SUV, which slots between the two-row Ford Edge and the full-size Ford Expedition, offers buyers a wide selection of engines and equipment, with prices to match. For excellent overall utility under $40,000, the Explorer's entry-level trims provide solid performance from a punchy turbocharged four-cylinder engine, available all-wheel drive, and generous standard safety tech.
At the other end of the spectrum, the Explorer's fanciest trim levels can cost well over $50,000 but offer Bentley-like levels of power and luxury, including a 400-horsepower twin-turbo V6 and quilted-leather massaging seats. There are also hybrid, off-road, and street-performance variants. No matter which version you choose, the Explorer delivers class-leading cargo space, a comfortable and composed ride, and plenty of modern tech, including standard in-vehicle Wi-Fi and Ford Sync 3 infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
While the Explorer's conventional base engine delivers solid fuel economy, the available hybrid powertrain doesn't come anywhere close to the class-leading Toyota Highlander Hybrid. On lesser trims, some cheap-looking and feeling interior materials diminish the otherwise refined package. Those seeking the plushest interior appointments for the money should also consider the Hyundai Palisade and its sibling, the Kia Telluride.

2022 xlt 4 cly owner. Have the sport package. 12k miles. So far no issues. On highway 30mpg at 73mph. At 80mph I’m getting 25.5 mpg. Everyone that has been in the car absolutely love it. Seats extremely comfortable. I’ve had 6 grown adults ride from Tampa to Orlando nobody complaining about space. Just my experience with it.

Update. 80mph 23 mpg AC is a loop and does not give good pressure to middle driver side seat. And moonroof leak. The 10 speed trans shifts weird. Still love it. Ford did fix the AC issue.

I had a 2015 Ford Escape SE that broke down from an oil leak in the engine back in mid March. I had that vehicle almost 5 years. I gotten a 2020 Ford Escape SE shortly after the old one broke down. It was a big upgrade for me. I loved the Apple Car Play in it. It did take me long to figured it out. I only test drove that one vehicle. I just drove around on the side streets near the dealership. I was about to cried in being stuck at Ford dealership w/o having a vehicle to drive back home. It took about 3 or 4 times in driving it to get used to the buttons and even controls. Even tried to start it up with a key or even putting my hand on the transmission.

We had a 2020 Ford Explorer ST. It was in the shop for warranty repairs 9 times in 2 years. Repeat issue, lift-gate not opening correctly, wasn't corrected until AFTER warranty expired and I had to pay for the repair. I'm a Ford man, but I've bought my last Ford SUV. And it's hard to believe ALL dealers in my area have new STs marked up $4-6k over sticker!

The 2022 Telluride's recalled due to fire with failing tow hitch wiring. Then there's the new 4 runners that are just crazy high and metal quality is down. Our 4 runner literally rusted in half at the frame rails in less than 12 years. I checked into newer 4 runners and I'm just not impressed, feel cheap but are crazy expensive.
So with 3rd row capabilities that leaves what? Chevy Traverse, Subaru Ascent, GMC Acadia, Toyota Highlander etc? They all have issues. 2020 was a Horrible year for the explorer though, the 2021 is rated much better and we're hoping the 2022 is even better cuz we just bought a 2022 explorer XLT.

Choose your trim level and color based on the types of roads you normally use. If you drive on two-lanes a lot go for a relatively bright color and a dash of chrome, avoid the "mesh" grille at all costs or you will be driving at 1 MPH below the speed limit until the driver ahead of you is *absolutely sure* you're not a cop.
