Funny because I bought a new 2021 Explorer Limited in March of this year. In May, when I started to use the AC, it was blowing cold air only on the passenger side. Took two separate trips to the dealer and about 10 days total for them to figure it out. Plus they do not have enough loaner cars to give out. We had leased 5 Honda Pilots in a row (every 3 years starting in 2005). We decided to switch it up and go with the Explorer, we kinda regret it. Though, the Explorer is a very good looking vehicle.

Toyota Highlander is our favorite because we had a Ford Explorer back in Jan 2006 when we were moving from the East Coast to Denver & U-Haul REFUSED to rent to us. Claimed this was due to the massive amount of Explorer roll overs & that Ford had not only blamed Goodyear but had also blamed U-Haul anytime it happened to occur when someone was towing a U-Haul.
We ended up having to rent a Ryder truck AND a tow package so we could tow our Explorer behind the rental truck. If not we'd have had to sell our Explorer because I had broken my leg in multiple spots & couldn't drive, my husband had to.
So yeah, Highlander for personal accountability & the fact that knock on wood it's never left our daughter and grand kids stranded

Bought it at 130k miles for $250 because the transmission was going and that's what scrap value was at the time. 50k miles later and I haven't done anything with the transmission except learn to coax it into 2nd gear with the gas pedal. It's my work truck and regularly carries 1000 lbs of tools and a 3500lb trailer. I've also done some light off-roading and no matter how bad the roads get with snow and ice I always make it to the job, and having a true 4x4 with actual low range comes in handy for pulling trees down. I can't speak to the Toyota but I don't think comparing a full framed SUV to a unibody crossover is a fair comparison.

I bought a 2021 Ford Explorer ST AWD new in March of 2021. The ST model is nearly maxed out in options (I got one without the sunroof, which I don't like.). It has twin turbos with 400 HP 415 ft-lb torque, which is awesome. Since I live at 7,200 ft altitude (20% less air density)the turbo helps a lot in passing. There are only two small complaints I have: The front collision alert system is junk and the rear hatch will spontaneously close while unloading groceries. Note that the rear backup collision avoidance system is great. Despite my tendency to test the turbos too often I still get 22.5 mpg in town and about the same on the highway. I rented a 2022 Range Rover Velar S with the standard engine on a recent trip, which I thought was under powered and well behind Ford on the high tech features. The relative weakness may have been because the vehicle was not upgraded enough but the base Velar S model is more expensive than the upgraded 2022 Explorer ST AWD.
