Thank you to all the people who told me the dodger stadium express has its own dedicated lanes now. That's definitely a big improvement, but there's still more that could be done.

The shuttle has a dedicated lane coming in, but not coming out. Taking the shuttle leaving the park is even worse than driving because not only do the shuttles sit in the same traffic everyone else is sitting in, you also have to wait in a massive line after the game just to get on the shuttle. Cars end up using the "dedicated bus lane" and some cars even park in the bus in the lane.
The shuttle is the absolute worst. I took it once, was on one of the first shuttles out of Union Station at 5pm, and we still got there past the 7:10pm first pitch. The passengers on our bus had to literally argue and fight with the bus driver to let us out at Vin Scully Ave so we could walk up to the stadium. If it weren't for someone pulling the emergency button to open the doors and let us out our shuttle would have not got there until closer to 8pm.
Actually the Dodger stadium express bus from Union station does have its own dedicated bus lanes once you reach the stadium. The biggest issue with it is actually the wait at union station, huge crowds waiting in the sun and buses trickling in and filling up immediately means you often need to wait for the next bus

I took my son to Dodger Stadium back in 2005 and it was our first time there. It took a whole hour just to get out of the parking lot after the game was over.
Dodger Stadium is a very awesome venue and I am always in aww when I go there.
It's a classic and very beautiful ! It's also at about 50,000 or so for seats which is more than appropriate for a city with well over 10 million in the area!
I live in the city of Huntington park which is a suburb of LA. I live exactly 8.2 miles from dodger stadium and I can take all streets all the way there with no problem and it can take only where from 20 to 35 minutes to get there depending on the time of day. To avoid paying $35 for parking at the stadium and the traffic, I will drive to union station near the stadium. $8 is the max u pay and the dodger express is actually quite nice. the busses get packed but theres bus lanes near the stadium.
When hill walkers talk about their trips, they are invariably uphill in both directions.

@@jumpinbeanz Right, and supposedly O'Malley had tricks like not putting in many water fountains. MAD Magazine attributed this to our Wharton background, but I think the Phillies tried to charge the players for parking until Jim Bunning made a fuss.
Chavez Ravine was taken down before it was offered to the Dodgers, the city just offered it when the Dodgers moved in. There are people today who grew up or had family grow up in that community today who will say it isn't the Dodgers fault for using the land they had.
Also yeah, parking is terrible, although it's just a hard problem to solve given the fact that LA and SoCal in general is so spread out, which makes public transportation hard. Angel Stadium and Petco Park have smaller scale versions of these issues, but it's way worse with Dodger Stadium because there isn't any form of food or entertainment near the exit of the stadium like the other two have.

Are you kidding me . I’m from Massachusetts and a die hard dodgers fan and your gonna tell me it is terrible . I get pictures and souvenirs from my friend who lives in La and they are all beautiful pictures and it is worth the traffic if your a dodgers fan ! Go to Boston. Traffic is terrible there also .

Traffic? Obviously you’re not from LA.. what stadium that draws 3 million fans a year doesn’t have traffic. At least with the Dodgers you get to see Dodger Stadium!! Go to Anaheim buddy lol
If you are within the city limits of Los Angeles, it is still impractical to get to Dodger Stadium. The same can't be said about other cities. Using the same hotel example in this video, you could get a hotel in Seattle, take the light rail, and then end up less than a block away from T-Mobile Park.
You missed the point of the video. If you have a stadium that is right in the middle of downtown and you have to walk 40 minutes when you are very close to the stadium is a MASSIVE fucking issue. take Amalie arena in downtown tampa for instance, it is a hockey arena that brings in full seats every game day, but because of the local tram line, the more navigable sidewalks and less sprawling parking lots allows it to reduce traffic. it isnt a great example but it shows how in a downtown city, where there is car based infrastructure can still prosper!

I’m from LA and yes the traffic leaving that stadium sucks. 3 hours to get out of there? Nah man that’s not how a stadium experience should be in 2023.

Literally wish they just build a few parking structures, would be far more convenient and compact, as well as looking much nicer.
Dodger Stadium was built in the 1960s. Stadiums built back then were placed away from downtown centers.

Busch Stadium, STL; Riverfront Stadium, CIN; Three Rivers Stadium, PIT; Fulton County Stadium, ATL we’re all built in their downtowns.
@@DebitAdams Debit, actually 4 of the 7 cookie cutters were downtown: Busch Stadium STL, Riverfront Stadium CIN, Three Rivers Stadium PIT, and Fulton County Stadium ATL.
Shea Stadium NYM, Oakland Coliseum OAK, and RFK Stadium WAS, were not downtown.
I don’t consider Veterans Stadium PHI or Jack Murphy Stadium SD as “cookie cutters” since they were rounded squares rather than circular, but since they were multipurpose, we can add those. They weren’t in downtown so you could say 5 of 9 were not downtown, which is a slight majority.
Knew the second part quite a bit. I didn’t realize the scale of the first one though. Most venues in the city have a dedicated station close to them so I’m surprised that there isn’t a close by station to the stadium where you could walk up to half a mile or less.
Wow. Great work. Thank you for bringing attention to the history of Chavez Ravine and the community that existed before Dodger Stadium. It truly is heartbreaking hearing about those people that were forced out of their homes.
Yep, basically you need to make it so you arrive at the stadium one hour (or even a little earlier) before game time. If you do that then you will miss most of the traffic. I love the Dodgers and the stadium and we don't go that often so it's no big deal for us.

I knew all of these things about Dodger stadium, does not change my opinion of it. Love the stadium and driving in or out is not that bad, however i don't live any where near enough for public transport to be an option.
Dodger Stadium Express is cheap and fast to the stadium. They have their own lane from Union Station, so they don't get bogged down with traffic. They also get to bypass all traffic going into the stadium.
The Dodger shuttle has its own dedicated lane now, with a police escort. Its been like that at least the last two seasons. What i did for yesterdays opening day was rent a lyme scooter from union to outside the station, it was $10
Los Angeles used to have the red car system. The best in the USA until the city decided for freeways & cars. To bad the red cars or the Pacific Electric railway was private. If it was public they could have expanded. You can't build rapid transit once the city is built. NYC built there system as the city was growing. Some smart minds need to develop a type of system with the new technology we have now. To bad the city ruined a good thing we once had. However, hope springs eternal! Just do it!
Just to get more Information on my comment do an Internet search on the Pacific Electric Railway. It covered all the metro area. It ran from 1901 - 1961. Something can still be done. It will take time, money & sacrifice. If you want the Los Angeles metro area to be a world class city. It needs a comprehensive Rapid transit system. It won't be easy but it can be done. The technology is out there. I have seen it other cities & it can be done here in the. Metropolitan Los Angeles area!
you're not wrong about any of this, even though a thousand los angelenos with stockholm syndrome will downvote your video to oblivion anyway. in a way, dodger stadium is perfectly emblematic of los angeles: it's literally a giant hole surrounded by a huge waste-of-space parking lot.

You totally hit the nail on the head with the stockholm syndrome thing. Although LA is making some progress with building new transit, they're definitely still one of the world's capitals of car-oriented culture. Yet most of them still can't figure out why there's so much traffic clogging their freeways.
@@CharlieND i've moved around the US and lived in multiple cities and small towns, including los angeles for around half a decade - and LA absolutely one of the most insular places i've ever been. SoCal honestly reminds me of texas in that so many people who live there (and have only ever lived there) just think it's the best place on earth by default and everyone else is just "jealous", despite there really being nothing special about LA whatsoever and it being an absolute urban planning and political mess. hell, the only reason LA technically considered the 2nd biggest city in the country is because it had to start absorbing all its suburbs into LA's city boundary in order to get fresh water thanks to political corruption. in actuality it's just a very generic sprawling western metro area, and one of the worst in the country in terms of infrastructure, and most boring in terms of architecture to boot. i live in san francisco now and the difference is night and day. the quality of life (not to mention quality of the air) in SF and the bay area is so much better, and one of the major reasons is because people generally don't drive here and SF actually has a functional transit system and is laid out more similar to east coast and european cities. LA sucks. the only people who don't think it sucks haven't lived anywhere else to know better.
@@ActuallySanFrancisco San Francisco is designed the way it is because it sits on a small peninsula with no room for growth. Plus San Francisco is far older than LA which is another example of why it's layout is the way it is. Plus, it's 7 miles long and 7 miles wide. That's not even half the distance between downtown LA and the ocean.
And as a proud Angelino who has lived in various cities and towns in the US (including 5 years in Chicago), the idea that people who are from LA don't know anything else about anything is ridiculous. It's people not from here who move here and cry about driving and this and that. It's like moving near LAX then complain about airplane noise.

I agree that it is difficult to get in and out but as someone who goes to around 15 games a season I cannot recommend more the Dodger express bus. Los Angeles added Bus only lanes about 5 years ago so the buses go right around all the traffic and the busses are police escorted through to make sure no one is blocking them. They also have a second dodger express bus that comes from carson up the 110 Freeway so you dont have to go all the way to union station and that bus rides on the express lane that also goes around all the traffic. On a weekday game (Rush hour traffic) i can go from carson (the farthest stop) to dodger stadium in around 45 mins which is pretty good considering its public transportation.
I forgot to add that the buses have their own lane as well to get into the parking lot so it doesn't have to wait for the people paying for Parking and it drops you off right in front of the pavilion entrance.

@@mh-do3pe you just go right back to where the bus dropped you off. You'll see a whole bunch of buses waiting. Just and this is very important, make sure you ask the metro workers (there's gonna be a lot of them) which buses are going to Harbor Gateway. There's should be two lines, one that takes you to Union station and the other to Harbor Gateway and you do not want to go to the wrong one lol

As a Yankees fan living down here in south Florida I heard a lot of fights happen frequently at the stadium and I understand it’s an old classic one but it’s too ghetto by looks of it. Looks similar to Oakland’s before that mount Davis madness but that stadium is a not must go to for me. But as for classic stadiums I’m gonna have to go with Wrigley and Fenway.

And that is why I like living in NY so much. The NY subway system is great. I wouldn’t take any Bronx subway past 10 pm because then you might get mugged, stabbed or shot but everywhere else it’s pretty good. I don’t get why LA doesn’t have good public transportation they pay a ton in taxes but whatever if they can’t control the homeless people they can’t build a train.
Because GM and Chrysler dismantled the amazing above-ground (y'know, a good idea in Earthquake Country) tram system that existed until the 50s and promoted the wonderful car culture we know today...
L.A.'s Metro system is pretty great for a city that spread out! They've been aggressively building new train lines too.
Wanted to point something out. Having nothing to do around dodger stadium before and after the game does kinda suck. I live in Seattle now and frequent lumen field and t-mobile park more than I thought I would, and there’s plenty do in the area. However one thing that lacks is parking. T-mobile park has one parking lot that they own and it costs $90 to park there. You can park at one of the many private unsecured lots that get cheaper the farther you get away from the stadium and still somehow it’s cheaper to park at dodger stadium. There is plenty to do around the stadium though. Public transportation in Seattle isn’t great though but somehow they do have lite rail and even an Amtrak that drops off a block from the stadium and it does make it easy to get there.

I thought you were going to critique the stadium and lack of amenities. Both of your key points doesn’t designate the stadium being terrible. A more accurate title would be why building Dodgers stadium was a bad idea.

Also if you’re at the Bonaventure best idea is to take the red line to Union and then switch to the gold line and get off at Chinatown and then walk up the hill to Dodger stadium.

Angel fan here. I love driving up the 5 to see a few games every season. Those of us that live here know that’s the way it is here.
I'm in Philadelphia which has a fairly good regional transit system, but I drive to work. I don't drive because the alternative simply "isn't any better" - I drive because the alternative is an ghastly overflow for a failed public+social care system. When I'm in New York I don't go anywhere near the subway because the last time I went I someone openly masturbating and most of the US's underground transit systems see you walking past a combination of sleeping homeless, drug addicts passed out and people needing somewhere to urinate.
As compared to a car but it takes 20m more? Give me the keys to a car any day.
I went to see my Dbacks play against the dodgers last October and walked from my hotel. It was a brutal walk lol But the stadium itself is amazing. It's definitely more walking friendly in downtown Phoenix. LA from what I noticed is extremely car oriented, not my cup of tea but I guess the stadium makes sense for the area. In Phoenix we have a light rail in thr east valley, for 4 bucks you can get all the way to the stadium, which was amazing when the suns were in the playoffs.
Maybe it was just a Monday but for me there was no traffic going in and minimal traffic getting out gonna go to another one Ill see then
La is building a gondola that takes you to Dodger stadium. I dont mind driving to dodger stadium. After every game you drive to tommys or king taco after thr game to grab food and hang out with other Dodger fans. Every stadium should be uniqie and different experience

Good video and I wasn't aware of the history of the displacement of Mexican Americans so the ballpark could be built. I saw a game in Dodger Stadium in 2016. We ended up taking an Uber from our hotel at Manhattan Beach to Dodger Stadium. After the game we utilized the bus shuttle to Union Station and took the metro to go downtown. After exploring downtown, we took an Uber back to the hotel. I remember we had to wait a while in line to catch a shuttle bus after the game. Mind you we had rented a car, but we didn't want to deal with the traffic going and leaving the stadium.
As far as the ballpark, I like the mid century look of the ballpark and the views from the stadium. It's too bad that the ballpark is so isolated from the rest of the city and isn't incorporated into a neighborhood like Fenway or Wrigley.
Why dont they build the parking lots underground?
The "HYPE" as you say about Sunset Blvd would certainly not be in THAT particular area, The good historical part of the "Sunset strip" is, way the hell in the other direction , where The Whisky is and The ROXY and all that kind of stuff is. The area you are referring to is cluttered with places like Pedro's Lube and Tube and Murray's Mufflers.
Dodger statium would been better if you can see the downtown skyline when watching the game since it’s open! But that fact that you see a boring mountain landscape make it look terrible.
Google the term Eminent Domain and see that Chavez Ravine was not simply cleared out for Dodger Stadium. That’s a portion of the truth but the only part that gets coverage.
The City of Los Angeles had claimed that had years before and had attempted to repurpose the land for different public use projects. They nice O’Malley saw the ravine while touring the city in a helicopter he asked about it…and THE CITY gave him the land. O’Malley did not operate a bulldozer himself and evict families from their homes. He was given land from the city. If the Dodgers never came that KSBD would have become an amphitheater or farmers market…it was destined to be utilized for something.
Is it a sad situation? Absolutely. But the CITY is the villain in the story. Just as Robert Moses is the true villain in the Dodgers leaving Brooklyn. Who’s Robert Moses? Looks like another Google run…

Interesting. My one experience with Dodger Stadium wasn’t a good one but it wasn’t bad either. My mom was able to find a hotel walk distance away and we did walk to the the stadium but I do remember noticing how crazy the parking lot was while I was trying to leave after the game. I was also 14 at the time so I usually wouldn’t give a shit about traffic or anything but it was crazy enough to notice. The removal of people is Chaves Ravine is sad but it’s too far in the past for people to care much about it. Some better public transportation in American cities would be amazing, but knowing myself and other Americans, we are so used to using our cars that we wouldn’t take full advantage of the public transportation. Good video.

You fail to mention the fact that the metholink trains buses and subways in LA are full of violent homeless, mental patients, and street gangs making it a very bad idea to take public transportation
I agree. I've been to every MLB stadium and this is, by-far, the hardest to get to. The first time I went there, I had an extended layover at LAX. Hop on a train and head over, right? Not so simple. Like you said... 40 minute walk from Union Station later (and I ended up on a different route on the eastern side where there are no sidewalks). To get back, I had to hitchhike (this is pre-Uber and honestly one of the only times in my life when I had to actually hitchhike to get from point A to point B). Also, I hate the fact that you have to exit the stadium to get from one section to the other, and tickets are checked. I had first base-line tickets, but couldn't explore the outfield because that didn't match my designated entrance. I think a lot of the folks who pine over this place have never actually been to a game there. Like I said, I've been to all 30 MLB stadiums, and this is one of the worst.
Not being allowed to explore different parts of a stadium is something I've never heard of in North America. Sorry you had to put up with that experience.
Thanks Nathan for the feedback. They have actually changed it.. where now you can enter or exit at any entrance and you can go to where you need to go. I've explored around inside.. from the top deck to the outfield and you can move around freely inside (well except when it's full of people). But the stadium does have it's issues.. no argument there.
You'd think it'd be easy to build multi-level parking garages, some hotels, and a subway expansion to Dodgers Stadium (in an aesthetically pleasing way that doesn't take away or diminish the look or feel.)
Yeah that's what I'm thinking. Building a small community around the stadium and making it more accessible would be hugely beneficial. The Braves did this really well at Truist park.
Like LA is considering building a god damn gondola that connects the stadium to Union Station instead of a metro stop.
You would think that multilevel garages would be an easy and realistic fix..similar to Disneyland. Prior to where the neighboring park California Adventure sits, that sits on the piece of land where the old parking lot for Disneyland was. But once California Adventure went in, they built a multi level parking garage for both theme parks. If they could do it for Disneyland, they should be able to do it for Dodgers Stadium.
God, can you imagine trying to leave a multi-level parking structure at dodger stadium? That would be an absolute nightmare.

I am not a Dodgers fan. This video by a whiner. A few weeks ago my wife and I stayed at a downtown hotel and drove to a Dodgers game. We arrived very early as we went to the tour through the stadium (lots of trophies). After the game there was naturally a traffic jam. What do you expect ? When going to any venue there is traffic. This city is relatively new, vastly expanded when cars were the norm, unlike 'older' cities such as NYC, Boston , Philly and Chicago when cars were a luxury.
Yeah I think that's pretty weird. As a kid, I thought it was the norm for a stadium to have its own dedicated parcel of land. But as I've visited other stadiums, I've learned we're the exception to the rule. And you're right. I'm a HUGE baseball fan but I don't want to endure all that traffic when I don't have to. It's part of the reason I don't go to as many Dodger games as I used to. If I do, I leave home like 3 hours before gametime and depending on the score (especially at night) start to head out around mid-8th inning. Nice video. Really enjoyed it
If you grew up in Southern California in the 1990s and 2000s like me, that * was * the norm. At least in that region. Dodger Stadium, Edison Field, and Qualcomm Stadium all were stadium surrounded by parking lot. Go up the state and that's still the norm at the Oakland Coliseum, although the Padres have since moved into a stadium downtown. Kauffman Stadium is also stadium surrounded by parking lot. Even today, it's not all that unheard of.

You have no idea what you are talking about regarding trains vs freeways in Los Angeles. The reason why trains work in places like New York and Boston is because of population density. Due to these things called earthquakes, L.A. couldn't build densely-populated areas like they have in Manhattan. For many decades, the tallest building in LA was City Hall, which is only 32 stories, and it has almost fallen down in earthquakes multiple times.
Also, eminent domain is part of building ANY major piece of infrastructure within the confines of an already-established urban area. THAT INCLUDES BUILDING TRAINS! In fact, far more communities would have to be destroyed to build the amount of trains you would need to transport 15 million people over a 4,084 square mile-area (the size of L.A. County. You certainly can't dig that many subway tunnels or purchase enough land to pull that off.
Traffic, Traffic, Traffic, Wah, Wah, Wah. all you complain about is logistics to a stadium that will get 3 to 4 Million People a year!

Im a Yankees fan and I usually get to go to one yankees game a year. Yankee stadium does it right in my opinion. It is blended in with the surronding community, has its own subway station, and there is parking garages I think nearby the stadium for people that choose to drive in
Yankee stadium is definitely a great example. I'm a Blue Jays fan, but seeing a game there is definitely something I want to do next time I'm in New York.

Yeah it sucks getting displaced but alot of America has been through the same deal. Multiple people got displaced when they were building the Massachusetts Turnpike, especially in Boston when they expanded it to connect to I-93. The Mass Pike runs right behind Fenway Park.and since has been extended even more to Logan International Airport in East Boston.
That was for a public works project. The Mexican-Americans living in Chavez Ravine were evicted from their neighborhood (the last ones there) for a privately-owned baseball stadium. Note the difference.

It seems like most of this video is you complaining about traffic and the general lack of public transportation in LA (or in most of the US rather). You have some very well researched points, but ultimately you don't care for the area and its navigation which is fine, and this has little barring on the Dodgers Stadium itself.
I think out of all the criticism this video has received, this is the most reasonable point. While I get your point, I think everything to do with what's outside the stadium makes a difference for fans on game day as well.
NYC, Boston, Washington DC Philadelphia built their stadiums near train stations and buses. Also at most 10 minutes walk from train station
The dodgers are not at fault for what happened at Chavez ravine it is the mayor and the city council that approved for this to happen at that time. Even to this day Mexican-Americans still hate the dodgers for what happened back then when they should be mad at the local government for what happened. There are some hardcore Mexican-Americans that live through that are have some relatives that did that are coming around to like or even love the dodgers now after realizing who was really at fault. I am one of them. Viva Los dodgers.

First you mention searching google for a route , that's a problem that goggle created. Most trains go to union station shuttle that has a bus lane. The 1950 's had nothing to do with the dodgers. No community was destroyed for the purpose of building dodger stadium. The politics of the city council took the properties by eminent domain and then later abandoned the plan. Directed parking in the general parking lots, cars from a queue and are directed to specific stall. Like any street with cars always use caution as a pedestrian. 👍🏽

Great video i always knew the history but i just felt that the lawyers involved did the best for everyone..however seeing the photos i doubt that was the case. Wherever LA needed a team and anywhere the team picked would suffer the same fate. Considering the times i don't think any choice for LA would be any better. But I'll agree with you in the traffic i live near the stadium our family always talks about don't be near it on game day lol 😂

If you've ever lived anywhere that has decent public transit like Europe you'd realize how much nicer taking quality public transit is over driving. I don't blame you for having the car-centric view since that's the environment you grew up in. I just think people shouldn't HAVE to drive if they don't want to. They should have other options.

Metro, bus and train should be more frequent and connect more places, so people like you can drive on more empty roads!!! how do you no see how this can benefit all sides?? people who arent as well off economicaly can benefit from well connected public transit and the people who perfer privacy can take roads. WIDER roads do not equal less traffic. wider roads brings in more people and you will be stuck in traffic jams. why dont you like public transit and walkability?
