That’s one of the great things about being in LA in my opinion. Most cities in America are just as car centric as LA, but we live in one of the few cities where people are pushing hard to change things.

Since bicyclists don't post gas taxes, what is their skin in the game? I rose my bike over 200 miles a week back in the 1990s and A only real bike lane I used was on Venice Boulevard, some streets in Santa Monica, and down to Redondo. It wasn't for commuting. The idea that bikes will be commuting vehicles is insane. In San Jose we lost one lane each direction for bike lanes on a major street. What did we get? Major traffic and commuters. Bicycle lanes hurt families and parents who can't use them when transporting children yet have to pay taxes for them while indulged bicycle activists get to use them on rare occasion. Bicyclists who commute should have their own lanes built off-street and let cars be cars. I've investigated far too many accidents involving bicyclists, in bike lanes, who thought they were protected and invulnerable. They weren't. It's ridiculous to expect a modern, mobile society, to use their streets for bikes. Let's start charging them for using the streets gas tax dollars pay for.

I hope you’re right about this. For my part, I voted no on HLA and was sad to see it passed. I appreciate your points about pedestrian safety and as someone who walks a dog often in LA, I’d love to see our roads get safer for walking, but I also commute to work and am keenly aware of the problem we already have with traffic and congestion. This plan of putting in dedicated bike/bus lanes has already been implemented in downtown Culver City, and it has made traffic twice as bad in what was already a heavily congested area. I’d love for LA to be a less car dependent city, but until we get a reliable subway system that covers most of the city I think that’s just wishful thinking, and the subway seems to be years away, if we ever see it at all. So to me this seems like a recipe for more traffic in our already horribly congested city

I don't see where this addresses what's killing so many people on the streets: texting while driving. It also proposes dangerous impediments like "bulb-outs," which force cyclists into traffic and prevent drivers from getting out of traffic while waiting to turn.
"Vision Zero" is a failure because, again, it does nothing to take "distracted" drivers off the road. Until texting is made a DUI-level offense, everything else is absurd and futile hand-waving.
Ugh, and here we are at 02:54 in the video: "biking on Melrose." WHY? Why not bike on Clinton or Waring, which are exactly parallel to Melrose?
And look at the preposterous renderings of the proposed Melrose, which has deleted half its capacity in another bizarre effort to turn a major street into a mall. Didn't you learn from the Bonin fiasco?
Next up in the video: a defense of developer hand-outs, which allow developers to destroy existing neighborhoods by building large structures without parking. Again, it pushes this insulting lie that people will magically be able to give up their cars and walk all over a huge county because their building doesn't have parking. Grow up. The people moving into those buildings are going to flood the surrounding neighborhood with their cars, making it impossible for existing residents to park anywhere near their own homes.
And that's just 1/4 of the way through. This is another regurgitation of the same false claims we've heard ad nauseum, to excuse the destruction of taxpayer-owned streets and existing neighborhoods.

Vote NO! Road diets like the ones HLA is promoting have caused havoc on LA streets, Venice, Mar Vista, Culver Culver City, once streets that were fine as they were now reduced by lanes, Causing mass gridlock, And dangers for Emergency personnel. As someone who bikes, these lanes are MUCH more unsafe, causing BIG blind spots and more opportunities to be hit. LA isn’t meant for bikes, and that isn’t going to change. All this is going to do is waste money, and cause worse environmental damage due to cares idling stuck in gridlock. Converting some car trips to biking, transit, and walking trips reduces the number of cars on the road, creates less competition for parking, and actually brings traffic rates down. On the financial side, car infrastructure is by far the most expensive to build and maintain. And the other modes of transportation mentioned are proven to be better for local businesses, generating more tax revenue for the city.

If you live in such a vast urban area as Los Angeles, you really should not need a car to get around. There is plenty of demand for public transit, and the city could be adapted to work with transit, as it did in and prior to the 1920s. See "Not Just Bikes" for more ideas on how to transition away from cars. I would especially recommend the cargo bike "Bakfiets" video, the carshare video, the "Autoluw" video, and there are plenty more that you can explore on your own.
