one other tip, Nico, have a camera with a Graflok back, or universal fit, this allows not just focus hoods to fit, but importantly roll film backs, so you can start out with easy film handling, or to shoot polaroid instant film ( fuji instax wide) via the lomograflok back, and check which lens board the system uses, as you might have to transfer boards on a lens you buy, or get adaptor boards (for smaller boards, like linhof tech 4x5" boards).
i bought a chamonix 45-N2 ten years ago and never buy another 4x5 camera again. highly recommended.
Good to hear you say that monorail is good. I just got myself a Cambo 4x5 monorail and starting to learn LF. It's certainly a big challenge!!!
Got into large format with a Busch Pressman Model D. I really am enjoying it. It is all metal and much smaller than the Graflex. The lens folds up into the camera which is a relatively compact package. Has a rangefinder, so you don't have to struggle with all sorts of movements when you don't need them. The standard Wollensak and Kodak Ektar lenses are surprisingly good. It is after all a professional press camera! I consider it the "Poor man's" Linhof Technika. If you are getting into large format, give the Busch Pressman Model D a look
I have used one once and found it a bit too small for my liking, it can only take a small amount of lenses but if it fits your use its an awesome little camera.
Thanks for doing these!!
I can also recommend Argentum Cameras and VDS Cameras very affordable and great quality
Love the studio stand!
if looking at an 'older' used camera, understand bellows availability, and what it takes to replace them. (my shen hao's are held in similar to a lens board, very easy)
Thank you for this video ! I was thinking to buy my 1st 4x5 camera. 8x10 is way out of my reach financially. I am thinking of getting a chamonix. What the difference between a 45N-2 and the 45F-2 ?
I do own a 45F-2. It‘s a wonderful camera. As far as I know it‘s the movement (asymmetrical tilt) of the rear standard that the F-2 has and the N-2 doesn’t. But I suggest going to the Chamonix website, because they’ll have for sure a comparison there between the two models.
Thank you so much @@tauernphotos ! It's really appreciated you took the time to answer :)
I have used a Speed Graflex for over 20 years, I like to use it more like Weegee and press photographers.... easy to set and grab a shot, not big on movements for my style!!!
you'd think after 20 years you'd be able to remember the name correctly. :P
@@creepyloner1979 Ha ha!!!

I still don't know which 4x5 to buy, how about I just get the cheapest kit
Buying the cheapest could end up being more expensive than buying a middle ground camera kit. Not all cameras are built the same and results will vary a lot.
Linhof Master Technika's are the best all rounder camera's and bang for the buck. It can be serviced many others can't. After month of research. This was my conclusion. I got it for a good price. "This is the way."
Thank you...will look into it
@@alexandrossarrigeorgiou613 you can attach a digital back to the linhof too
How about Sinar F? It is monorail but pretty light (not a pain to carry). Also dirt cheap now. For 4x5 it seems to check all the boxes.
MPP 4x5!!!!
might as well just get a speed graphic.
Hey really love your content this is awesome . What is your preferred editing software you use for filmmaking, I'd love to have a conversation and maybe even collaborate on different ways in telling stories through film!
Thanks Curtis, not sure I follow what you mean by editing software? For video or for photos?
top rangefinder 4x5 pacemaker speed graphic. end of discussion. :P
Awesome advice! Thanks.
Thanks for a wonderful channel and a very informative, pleasant but no nonsense presentation style!
question: i have a 907x 50c Hasselblad :to what’s large format system would you marry this to if you wanted the best of both worlds?
assume money is no object and that I would want to be doing both landscape and portraits
arca Swiss?alpa?or...I would like access to large format while enjoying the 50c back...thank you

What about a horseman 45FA?
Its a great option. I love every camera Horseman has made.
Have you made a move onto 5x7 yet. It seems to be a the most versatile size though uncommon. Unfortunately enlargers are rare and the film here in Australia is nearly the same price as 10x8, so a real pain.
4x5 is the most versatile, and if you have a camera, you have an enlarger.
@@creepyloner1979 Regarding your "if you have a camera you have an enlarger", not necessarily the case. A durst 138 (5x7) is a huge, heavy beast and requires about 8'6" headspace, pretty rare too. There are some people who do only contact prints and have no enlarger for their large format negatives. Almost nobody has an 11x14 (or larger) enlarger, all contact prints if they use film.
The other point regarding "versatility" was that 5x7 is a size that allows sufficiently large contact prints that are suitable for mounting or display. Thus, is a size that can satisfy someone with a reasonable record of their photographs without necessarily having an enlarger. In general terms it is nicer to view through a larger ground glass than 4x5, 5x7 gives a bit more to see when viewing details for focus etc., certainly is for me. 5X7 cameras, whilst they are bigger than 4x5 they are not the burden that larger cameras can be. So in many ways I consider them a good compromise between 10x8 image quality and 4x5 compactness especially for those who lack enlargers.
I got my feet wet. I bought a 9x12 for 60 euro incl 4 plate/nagitve holders. I think if youre in europe 9x12 is a greate gateway drug..
If you need some 9x12cm Film holders let me know as I have a bunch of them left and currently not shooting 9x12cm ;)
How can I know whether the holders can hold negatives? I thought that if it held plates it couldn't hold sheets. I've seen some sweet 9x12 and it'd be pretty fun to try.
Also, old 9x12 holders are universal?
@@tauernphotos Yes, Please. Its greatly appreciated. I have send you a message.
my first large format camera was a voigtlander avus i got for $10 with missing parts. next thing i knew i was buying a speed graphic on ebay after getting distracted looking for avus parts.
@@daninierga4804 As far as i know and that is one of the great things about old holders they can hold both. Some times you can remove a backing plate from a spring and the holder can hold glas or an other plate instead of a negative... I would say its an advantage above modren (4x5) holders ;-)
