Evolution of Trial Mountain in Gran Turismo (1997 - 2022 / GT1 - GT7)

- Gran Turismo 7 has been released and it brings back several of the iconic original tracks from the previous GT games. One of these tracks is Trial Mountain. Here you can see a fast lap on Trial Mountain with the Toyota Castrol Supra in every major GT game that included the track, showing the evolution of the track and the car throughout the history of the franchise.
Timeline:
0:00 Gran Turismo 1
1:16 Gran Turismo 2
2:38 Gran Turismo 3
4:04 Gran Turismo 4
5:29 Gran Turismo 5
6:56 Gran Turismo 6
8:25 Gran Turismo 7
Trial Mountain has been included in every numbered Gran Turismo game. It is one of only 3 tracks that appeared in 7 of the 8 major GT games, along with Deep Forest and Laguna Seca.
The track stayed pretty similar from GT1 to GT6 but for GT7 it got a big redesign. The front and back straight were extended and the infamous yeet chicane before the finish was replaced by two individual corners. Overall this made the lap times half a minute longer.
In previous games the real world location of completely fictional tracks was not specified but in GT7 it is revealed that Trial Mountain is located in the United States. Based on the dialogue before one of the career events it is probably in the Sequoia National Park in California.
As you can see in the video GT1 and GT2 have pretty similar graphics, while GT5 and GT6 are very similar in both graphics and physics. GT7 looks pretty similar to GT Sport, although Trial Mountain was not included in that game. However, the PS2 games GT3 and GT4 look completely different from each other, with GT3 probably being the most unique Gran Turismo game in terms of both graphics and physics.
In each game I am using the featured version of the Castrol Supra, which is the '96 version in GT1, the championship-winning '97 version in GT5-GT7, the '99 version in GT2 and the '00 version in GT3 and GT4.
I am using the softest race tires that are available in each game, no further upgrades or setup changes, no assists besides the standard ABS and automatic transmission.
GT 1-4 were played on emulator, GT 5-6 on PS3 and GT7 on PS5. The units are set to miles in each game, since the NTSC versions of GT1-GT3 don't have a km setting and I want to keep the units consistent throughout the video.
I have spent a lot of time on the track in each game to record the fastest and cleanest laps possible for this video, as you can probably tell from some of the lap counters. Hopefully people will appreciate the effort that I put into this video to make it as good as possible. :)
I have also shared the replay of my fastest lap in GT7, so you can watch it ingame from different camera views if you can find it in the showcase area.
Feel free to share the video with friends or in GT-related Discord servers if you enjoy it. Other UA-camrs will probably make similar videos but I think that my version should be one of the best, so let's see if we can get it trending. It has been 18 months since one of my new videos reached more than 20k views and I finally want this period to end.
What are your thoughts about Trial Mountain, the Castrol Supra and the different Gran Turismo games? Feel free to share your feelings in the comments.
I will be making the same type of video for Deep Forest as well, with the laps in GT1-GT6 already recorded, so you can look forward to seeing the evolution of that track as well. :)
Finally a shoutout to my friend RynoGT4, who already made a video like this in the past and partly inspired this video. Check out his version of the video here if you want to: • Evolution of Trial Mou... - Ігри

The turbo spools in gt2 sounds better than gt5, gt6 and prolouge combined like W T F
4:43 paragleiber o love your videos
The jump in quality from GT2 to GT3 is insane. I'm sure people were very impressed when they first played GT3.
Exact same thing with GTA on the PS1 to the PS2 with GTA III - I was only a real kid back then but I remember how revolutionary it was to everyone back then
Getting a PS2 back then was a massive deal. I remember playing GT3 at a retailer and was in shock at how impressive it was.
Today the leap in graphics from PS4 to PS5 isn’t anything to get excited about.
@@xkimopye It is a big leap in graphics but sadly the human eye is limited
Not really, pc graphics had that quality couple years before ps3 launch. In between the ps2 and ps3 the evolution of processing power grew stupidly fast
Veeery impressed!. I could not believe my eyes. Almost cried of emotion the first time
I think we all agree that the tree canopy after the tunnel is sorely missed in GT7.
Fack yeeeaaa
I think they were trying to impress you with the stunning light trickery
The council came and carried out some heavy pruning for health safety compliance.
era o melhor nessa pista
And the final chicane
It is kinda sad that they took off that "tree tunnel"... It was kinda magic
Yea definedly, took me a bit to realize what was missing but atleast we have big trees now :D but those overhanging branches were just 👌🏻
maybe because thats tree dont have anymore in real life, so gt7 up to date it.
Man, i KNEW there was something missing! Thought it was the extra tunnel in GT7, but the magic was kinda gone.
@@hyemin6314 Trial Mountain it's a fictional track lol
Gt7 trail mountain to me is basically:
I love the updated look, looks like a actual track walls and stuff that youd see mixed with the forest beauty.
Huh, the minimap shows the straights longer and the last 2 corners 90 degrees, I heard they did that to fit the new driving style, so thsts fine.
Ok, were entering the tunnel before the tree tunnel, huh, they lengthened the tunnel and added a second hill in the tunnel, I guess to make the straight mor intere....
That was it?, that was the "tree tunnel?", whyyyy?
Gran Turismo 3 version will always be my favorite. First time I played it and you come out of the tunnel and rays of light coming through the trees reflecting on the car was something incredible at the time. And still is!
Same. And I simply cannot accept the fact that a game that came out in 2001 can still look so good even today.
I think GT7 missed a great opportunity to showcase the ray tracing by chopping off the trees on the back straight
Yeah. Also the graphic change between ps1 and PS2 was outstanding
Those are the first signs of ray tracing my friend ;)
Definitely agree. GT3 was the best
RIP YEET CHICANE
1997 - 2022
we will all miss the corner cutting and rollover trophy

At least we still have willow springs to yeet ourselves…
Respect to you for doing the tracks yourself and making it as smooth and clean as possible.
Respect for what?

Its very interesting to see how the lap times changed over the years, especially in GT7
I think the track is much longer in GT7, almost a km longer iirc
The GT7 version is very different from all the previous ones.
Its just this OG Supra getting more O and less G :)
@@FacuGonz3 Yeah, I noticed right away it's shaped differently.
The track is stretched significantly in GT7
GT2 really focused on the turbo noise. Super loud bov going off. Love it!!!.
the real sneeze simulator
Am surprised how they added so much more eye candy over the years, but the car models and their sound still seems an overlooked detail.. would defo expect more impressive pops n bangs and anti lag flames like mad in a tuned supra...
And then they forgot about it totally and all cars sound the same 🤷🏻
Yeh that Castro Toms Supra in GT2 sounded brilliant
It was super annoying on the rally stages
Still baffles me how good GT3 looks for a game from 2001. Going from GT2 to GT3 must’ve been absolutely mind blowing back in the day.
It was, oh it was...
@@tob564 Similar to the jump to GTA 4 from San Andreas
All the games were. But no where near the amount of cool going from 2D to 3D, from semi 3d/2d super nintendo to full 3d nintendo 64/playstation 1. Nothing new can replicate the aww.
I played GT2 without playing the first game. I couldn't believe. It was way above the average racing games back then. But I think from 6 to 7 it had its greatest gap. Sometimes I see a screenshot from GT7 on youtube thumbs and I wonder if it's a real car video or a videogame until I read the title. Racing games are almost getting photorealistic when it comes to cars, but maybe the scenario is still lacking in comparison.
I would stare at the cars for hours and show my parents how realistic it all looked. It was definitely insane to me at the time.
It puts into perspective how special GT3 still is.
GT2 to 4?
I don't know why, but in Gran Turismo 7 feels like a totally diferent track, and I don't say it for the last part of the track because that part is clearly changed, I mean the entire track.
The backstretch uphill tunnel were longer than the original, and it's not like an extension to make the track longer, more like it's a remake, on that sector alone
@@divecolosio4988 chicane is also longer as well
and look also at the trees and all that stuff. This one looks less forest-like, probably for showing more sunlight effect or something like that.
Because it was 100% rebuilt from scratch. Until GT7, it was the exact same layout model but with a couple updated props, structures and textures.
@@fanzach9524 and I honestly don't mind that. It's called trial mountain for a reason, it should be more focused on the mountain, not the forest.
I’ll always remember playing GT 3 for the first time and being amazed at the overhanging trees in the latter part of this track and the way the sun sneaks through giving it an absolutely amazing visual treat. It Looked absolutely amazing. Strange to see they never got the backgrounds looking that good since, especially in Gt7. And going by a lot of the other comments, I wasn’t the only one nostalgic about those trees in GT3. Goodbye trees, we’ll miss you!
And also High Speed final chicane.😢
GT3 is on a whole different level. The sound design was so on point. It looks much more dynamic and fast compared to the other ones. And let's not forget that's a 21 years old game. Quite an achievement by the development team. Kudos to them, for providing us with hour of escape and entertainment!
The graphics jump from 2 to three was insane
I think that's because he is running upscaled PC Ports for 3 & 4.
It's heavily misleading.
Even 6 to 7 is pretty big tbf
@@DaveRelph001 It does skip a whole console generation so you sure would hope there to be a clear leap forward.
graphic maybe yes but the sound gets worse with each sequel G.T. 5 +6 have worst , 3 or 4 types of sound for all cars .. The bugatti veyron has the same sound as the mini cooper and much moore .. :D really bad sound
@@tydendurler9574 *emulations.
I like Gran Turismo 3 the best. The way the light cuts through the trees that almost touch across the road is just majestic. They completely removed that in later versions and got rid of those types of trees entirely in 7, 7 looks the best but I miss the old ways.
GT7 needs to have a legacy layout where the final turn is still the same as the old ones tbh.
Absolutely. I'm not really a fan of the new layout..
@@bigdawgc maybe DLC?
Bring back Yeet Chicane™ and the tree tunnel!
The final turn before the GT7 version is the funnest turn in the whole track.
Edit: spelling and grammar
As much as I miss throwing myself airborne across the finish line I do feel that the final corner change is very much needed
Seems like last part of this track is slightly changed in GT7. I wasn't ready for such sharp corners
On the one hand you can't cut this section anymore, on the other hand you've got an extra opportunity to overtake your opponents...!
yeah
the entire circuit has been changed
The straights on the whole are longer, some of the fast corners are longer, that chicane was a big change, lots of new stuff.
@@ItsJustMetrion king mentality
The fact he did so many laps in every game to get a good laptime that he is proud on is respectable.

Gran Turismo 3 graphics still looks really good over 20 years later
great video! trial mountain was and still is my favourite track in GT. I'm also surprised how good GT3 on the ps2 still looks. Very impressive.
That’s probably running on a computer emulator with resolution superior to what the console was capable of
GT4 looks better
Yeah gran turismo 3 has always been my favorite because it looks beautiful. It's one of the only games that has a sunset on laguna seca and I always think of it like that now.
@@eins2001 no, gt4 looks gray and dull compared to gt3. I love both, and I think gt4 has much better gameplay, but gt3 wins in looks by miles.
@@Celatrec The better game is Gt4 but I find Gt3 to be more fun and forgiving. The arcady handling makes it more easier to pick up and play vs gt4s more realistic handling.
The change from GT2 to GT3 is astonishing
GT1,2 & 3 certainly ate hours and hours of my life up.. I still have them all since I was a kid 😁
Wow. Gran Turismo 3 still looks great 21 years later! Just shows you how much of a jump the PS2 was from the original PlayStation.
Runs on an emulator here
@@phil_5430 It is not upscaled, emulator doesnt change anything here
There's just something about the sound of the supra in GT4 that makes me smile..... like damn, that engine note, it's so good, the wind rushing as you increase speed. Really takes me back to my childhood
Wow, GT3 still looks great even today! Big jump in gfx quality from GT2
Last corner is not that big deal. Now, that freaking tunnel on the best part of the track ( tree ) is very sad
the leap in graphics from ps1 to ps2 was massive. frome ps2 to 3 not so much. i still love gt4
Trial Mountain in GT7 is totally different. The first tunnel has a straight line, because in previous GT the tunnel only has left turn. And the biggest difference is the last chicane, in previous versions we can cut the chicane to blast off into the finish line, in GT7 we can't, lol.
But I like the improvement tho, because we love Gran Turismo 💙
Honestly, the best Gran Turismos were on PS2. They didn't have the same computing power so the graphics, sounds and and physics calculations were less impressive but, if I'm not just remembering only the things I liked and memory serves me well, they didn't have any semblance of rubber banding. I know rubber banding is supposed to be an option on GT Sport where you can turn it on or off but instead of on/off it should say extreme/less extreme because those are the only options it really gives you. I'm glad I waited until it was in the bargain bin to buy it and it has inspired me to do the same with GT7 unless a very trusted friend raves to me about it, specifically pointing out a complete lack of rubber banding. It has lots of features I miss which are not found in GT Sport but I still have my PS2... just need to find a good wireless PS2 controller if such a thing exists... or a good wheel and pedal set.

@JM Production 😳
In short, we all miss the YEET chicane
@@Where_is_Waldo Ps1 and 2 are the best no doubt. GT7 was not even close. 👍
I'm so sad about the loss of the tree tunnel! Though all of the updates to the track looked and felt amazing like someone else stated "it was magic" to come out the long tunnel into the canopy! Especially when they enhanced the lighting in GT3 to cast the spotlight effect! I will learn to love this one too, but the canopy was part of GT's DNA. Change is hard. ❤
Man I miss the tree canopies after the tunnel, now they replaced them with giant sequoias.
Most drastic graphic change still gt2 to gt3 tho, but layout wise from gt6 to gt7
First of all, respect for putting in the laps to have a good recording. Secondly, such a big big big mistake for them to remove the overhanging trees after the tunnel, it was the best part of the track (visually), it's also sad that the fast chicane got butchered.
It was better with the trees over the long straight. Also GT2's BOV noise really takes me back.
GT3 is just... the colors, the trees, the whole atmosphere just feels like a breath of fresh air. 💙
GT1 1:09:562
GT2 1:14:589
GT3 1:19:479
GT4 1:17:898
GT5 1:20:450
GT6 1:21:615
GT7 1:49:864
it seems that in GT7 the track is much bigger
In GT7 the 2 straights are longer
Also, the performance of the car's been nerfed - the Castrol Supra in GT1 and GT2 was absolutely rampaging around that circuit, 185 MPH on the straight and silly numbers on every straight - compared to the car plodding around in GT5 and GT6.
I remember playing GT-3 A-Spec and completing the rally license and a day later having my data corrupt
The tunnel corner feels a lot longer and tighter in GT7. Also I still can't recognize the track after it was flipped in GT5, it just looks.. wrong :D
Gt3 will forever be number 1 in my heart❤️
My first GT was GT3 and I remember how me and my whole family had no words to describe how beautiful he was back in the days. Even today, it looks great
Anyone else pay attention to the dynamics... mad props to you for running the same line. GT1 you ran a 1:09ish I think. The track times keep going up. In GT7 you ran 1:49. Added 40 seconds that's crazy!
Love that the circuit gets slower gradually through the years. Didn’t know they’d slowed down that final corner complex until now either!

Really cool that you did all the laps yourself. Nice video!
Does anyone remember how in the PAL and NTSC-U versions of GT1 in Arcade Mode this track had a big jump on the back straight?
Oh, you are right. I didn't remember that actually. You can see it in my playthrough video though. ua-cam.com/video/2Ks1QpLT-r8/v-deo.html
I knew somthing was off lol.
GT 4 was perfect imo. Loved the driving missions.
also introduced the gigantic tree at 4:50, that thing is gigantic and actually a little scary. GT7 took it out but added some large trees around the track at 9:30
4 had the best world map setup imo. Loved grinding races out in K-cars just to get my butt whipped in the super fast races lol. Plus the soundtrack was killer
The Tunnel of Trial Mountain is pure magic.

The GT7 version doesn't have the same flow. I absolutely understand that the chicane and backstretch are different, but the first 6 or 7 corners feel off.
The environment in GT7 looks gorgeous! I've always had the same complaint with Gran Turismo having paper trees and not so stellar environments, but in GT7, it looks stunning! And the skies look great as well.
We still have paper trees, sadly. They just look a lot better than they used to.

A turbina enchendo no gt2 é muito top
I remember one day when I was like 9 or 10 years old, my mom had gone grocery shopping and I was alone at home playing GT1 on my PS1.
Eventually, my chess teacher at the time went to say "hi" because he was walking down my street. I told him my mother wasn't there and that I was playing racing game, he told me that he was a big fan of it also so I invited him to come play with me. At first he was like "no, your mom isn't there so I can't come" but I insisted soooooo much that finally he was like "ok but just 5 minutes". Didn't realized at the time that the situation could be weird from an adult point of view, just wanted to play and have fun with my new friend...
So we started playing on the exact same track that you see on the video, it was one of my favorite ones. I didn't took the Castrol supra GT though because it was oversteering too much and I didn't liked it, I preferred the mitsubishi.
We started to have great fun and found out that our performances were very closes. One time i was winning, the other time it was him and the challenge of beating him became addictive very quickly. At the end of every 3 laps race, he was like "ok now I really have to go, I can't stay..." but everytime I insisted sooooo much for him to stay that he barely had the choice 😅.
One hour went by before we knew it and my mother came back. She found him and me playing alone in the house, and she was very angry at him. I remember him being so uncomfortable and appologizing, and then went away. On my side i felt soooooo guilty because I knew it was me that putted him into this situation, but now almost 20 years later I also understand the point of view of my mother.
Today, i remember those times as the "good old days" when everything were fun and game. When we grow up responsibilities comes and we tend to forget that mindset.
Concerning that chess teacher, i stopped chess few years later and haven't heard of him since. I wonder what he became...

So no yeet chicane?
GT4 graphics are insane for the time, and theres not much difference between gt4 and the next 2 gt games graphics wise
Thats a bold claim dude.
GT4 is running on an emulator, the anti-aliasing should be maxed out. The game doesn't even come close to that natively on PS2.
GT5 and GT6 are being captured directly from a PS3.
So there is a lot of difference, but GT4 marked an era. 💪
also GT3 graphics are insane for a 2001 game
I noticed they smoothed out the track more before the straight. I always liked how the left hand turn started with a decline and ended with a sudden incline. It provided an awesome feeling of traction which I think is kinda lost in the recent version.
It's amazing how good looking GT3 is to this day.
