    Well done for catching this aircraft. As B6140 it was very common in Sydney where I live and in fact was one of only 5 China Southern a380's globally that kept flying through COVID, CAN-SYD-CAN and CAN-LAX-CAN as well as repatriation flights. They brought medical supplies in cargo and flew pretty empty PAX wise. Some say they originally brought COVID to Australia as well! I certainly miss them however. The livery has not changed much, basically they have just replaced China Southern with GLOBAL. The rest of the livery seems the same. I hope Global does manage to get going and survive.

      Some interesting history of that aircraft there that I didn’t know about, thank you, and glad you enjoyed 😊👍

      @@stevehall5299 an easyJet A380 sure would be something 😂. I’ve actually started doing a bit of modelling myself, just put together an Airfix starter set of the Red Arrows Gnat, in the process of painting it. First Airfix I’ve made since I was really young (and possibly the first model kit I’ve ever done on my own as my dad helped me with them all back then 😂).

    I read that this aircraft flew all the way to Prestwick with the gear down due to a fault. Looks like there is still an issue because they didn't retract after takeoff. A great sight to see though. Global are going to have a tough time getting into service, but I hope they pull it off. The more A380s in service the better.

    • @lee.gallagher

      I’m not sure about a fault as such, but the aircraft hadn’t flown for a while before that flight over from the States, and I just read today that standard procedure is that if an aircraft with retractable gear hasn’t flown for more than 4 months then the gear mechanisms need checked, and to do that you need giant jacks to hold the plane while they test retracting and extending the gear several times.
      Neither the place in the Mojave they got the plane from nor Prestwick has these, so for both the US-Prestwick flight 5 months ago, and the Prestwick-Dresden flight today, both were flown with the gear down the whole way as a precaution.
      There is facility in Dresden to do heavy maintenance on A380s though, which is why it flew there today, so they’ll be able to verify that the gear are in working order, and fix them if there are any faults.

      Also agreed on the A380 point. A lot of naysayers but I really wish the best for Global as there isn’t enough ambition in aviation these days I feel.

    It'll probably be back again, if they do start services they'll probably use PIK for training

    What was the callsign for the flight?

    • @lee.gallagher
      @lee.gallagher  2 місяці тому

      @@tripleo7109 had to go back and have a look at the screenshot I took on FR24 on the day, and it looks like it didn’t really have a unique flight callsign - just simply the same as the registration “9HGLOBL”.

      @@devon896 After Dresden it’s going somewhere else in Europe (not sure where) to get its interior fitted out for passenger flight, and then I imagine yes, it’ll be coming back to the UK. Not sure if Prestwick will ever be on the cards again though, will just have to wait and see.
