All top heads are tuned too high to hear the real sound of the shell. Every snare can crack. We need to hear the color of the shell with a medium tuning. Just a thought.
Timpano percussion You’re totally right, it was steel. My bad! 🙂 I don’t know how they do it, but Yamaha (particularly Yamaha metal) snares just have that particular ‘Ping’ to them. It’s probably as identifiable to me as that Ludwig drum thunder. I don’t have a very sophisticated ear, but certain drums just seem to have this distinctive sound that doesn’t really change, regardless of the decade they’re in, or sometimes even what material is used (within reason, of course! 🤨).
You guys do absolutely wonderful stuff. Really appreciate how unbiased, clean, and consistent your comparison vids are.
Thank you for the kind words Aaron!
I love that very first Birch 5.5.
Am i deaf or is there more ringing on the 14x8 birch than on the steel one
Personally liked the 14x5.5 aluminum
Ils sonnent tous bien, mes deux best, le 8 birch et le alu 6.5
The last 2 for me

Some snares choke more than others when they crack.
Steel for mine...!
They all sound great. Sorry!
Every time I hear you go into a roll on those aluminum snares, I automatically think “Jimmy Chamberlin.” 🙂
Thank you for the kind words Chris! Actually his original Signature snare was in steel..! (I know, I own one and love it!)
