I used to have one last summer and it died. I got anther one. It’s thriving well right now. I will follow your recommendations. Thanks for this advises. I would like to see more on calatheas I have a few of them and for some reason they are hard to care for. I killed a few of them.
Great video! I actually bought one by accident together with a Calathea. Funny enough I thought the lubbersiana would die, but it actually ended up being the one surviving. If you struggle with watering u can actually use a self watering pot and keep the reservoir filled constantly. I have the wick type of self watering pot and it worked wonders until now. I also have the lubbersiana in a very chunky soil maybe that also helps prevent root rot. The only thing that my lubbersiana does is that it sweats at night. I think it's called guttuation. I'm not sure if that is a sign of overwatering or if the plant just does that, but it hasn't shown any other signs of root rot yet and has given me lots of new growth, so I hope it will be fine.
Ylisse Charm, It sounds like your plant is doing well! Guttation is actually not a bad thing. This video on guttation tells you a little more about it: ua-cam.com/video/Jjqd3wAtkzQ/v-deo.html
Very informative video! I’ve had my plant outdoors in a mostly shaded spot. And the leaves are much lighter than yours. I’m going to move it indoors where it’s still bright but no direct sunlight. We’ll see if the color deepens a little. 🌿💚
Elizabeth Breton, Thanks,, and thanks for watching! That's a good idea to move your plant indoors to darken up the leaves. If you want, keep me posted on her progress!
Wow! a great informative video! you have covered everything we need to have a healthy plant. I love the moisture meter part because my plants wouldn't survive this long (almost 1 year) without it. Thank you so much for everything
Your specimen is so short & bushy! When I bought mine 10 months ago, it had 3 tall stems & I have had to use support to bring them closer together. Did you prune yours to get so many leaves on short stems?
William Laine, This plant has been pruned a couple of times. Ctenanthe tend to grow up tall, sometimes suddenly, so pruning them is a good idea. I am going to do a video on pruning them in the future, as it is a little tricky.
I was under watering this plant due to thinking it was arrowroot. The plant is tall and growing, but very sparse and top heavy. Do you have advice on pruning or tips for encouraging fuller, lower growth?
E, I do have some advice for pruning this plant. I recently sent photos and some instruction to another viewer. It's a little on the tricky side. I am also going to be doing a video in the future on pruning ctenanthe. If you would like the information, please email me via my website, and I will reply with instructions: www.healthyhouseplants.com/contact-us/
I purchased one about a month ago. I had to repot it as it was planted in a bark soil and was too wet. It was doing well but has started to get some light brown areas on the leaves. One of the new leaves has brown along the sides. Please help me. lol
Lorraine Licurse, It's good that you did repot in a better soil. Did you plant in the right size pot? That would be a pot that is 1/3 and the plant is 2/3 of the plant-pot combination. If you planted in the right size pot, the leaves browning is likely from the too wet soil it was in prior. Plants can be a little slow to react. Give it some time, and keep an eye on the new leaves that start to grow. You want them to be healthy. If they aren't healthy, that is a sign of a problem, which may be that the pot is too big, which leads to soil staying too wet, which leaves to fungal problems, which leads to leaf problems.
Hi, my plant has gotten so leggy that it's not pretty anymore. There are no lower leaves as it grows like bamboo. Do you have any tips to get it bushy again?
Lisa, You want to trim back to a stem joint--so the part in the stem that has a line through it. Trim to right above that, so the stem join is still there. New growth should start coming from that area and then become bushier. Don't trim the whole plant at once, as the plant requires leaves to photosynthesize. Trim back 1/4 to 1/3 of the plan,t and then let it start to grow for 2-3 months, then trim again. If you trim too much all at once, you will also shock the plant. Also ensure that the plant is being watered properly, as improper watering can lead to leaf loss.
@@HealthyHouseplants Thank you so much for the response! I am a bit confused as I'm not sure what you mean by the part that has a line. I'm afraid I waited too long to contact you as each stem is 6 to 10 inches long before the bunch of leaves so basically a stick with leaves on top. Each stem has a bunch of leaves at the joint. If I cut above the joint and just cut the leaves off, that stem is still 10 inches long so I would think leaves would just grow right where I cut them off. I'm sorry for not understanding! I wish I could send you a picture so you could tell me exactly where to cut. There is limited information about pruning this plant so I really appreciate you getting back to me. If you have an email address I would live to send you a picture. Thanks again for trying to help me!

Why my plants has honey like at end of new growth?
@ELEGANCE0927, It could be that the plant has scale or mealybugs. Check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/E9mavC9masU/v-deo.html
My plants leaves are curling in rather tightly on both sides what’s happening
Just needs a deep drink of water
Don’t see the soil you prefer that you mentioned you would share….
Paula Anderson, Thanks for pointing that out. I have added two soils. Promix is what I prefer, but the other is also good.
